Pat Smith, a 70-year-old grandmother, has become a famous environmental activist. She spent one year cleaning up litter from 52 beaches on the UK’s south coast.
Smith set out on her task in January to carry out her New Year’s resolution (决心) of making her community a better and cleaner place. The great goal came to her after watching a documentary on plastic pollution the previous year, and she knew she couldn’t just do nothing.
Over the year, Smith cleaned beaches from Coverack on the Lizard Peninsula to Blackpool Sands in Devon. Often, volunteers would join her in her efforts. During her beach cleans, Smith was sometimes mistaken for doing community service that have been ordered by court as a punishment. She said:“People don’t understand I’ve been doing this voluntarily. We should all take responsibility for picking up the litter as well as ensuring we don’t drop litter in the first place.”
She manages to make her hometown an example for the plastic-free movement in the United Kingdom. In order to help achieve this goal, she founded The Final Straw (吸管). “I founded the Final Straw to try and raise awareness of the very harmful damage we are doing to our oceans from our using single-use plastics. I feel I have a responsibility to my children and grandchildren to do something about it,” she said.
Her resolution year may be over but this grandma continues her pursuit (追求). “A lot of the rubbish I have picked up is everyday items,” said Pat. “These things are used by all of us and it is shocking to find them polluting our beautiful beaches. Please let’s try to be morel thoughtful in this coming year. I’m driven to try and protect our living planet for my children and grandchildren and I will continue to do everything in my power to achieve that.” It’s particularly heartwarming to see more and more people taking part in it and learning about how plastic affects our world, as this gives us all a lot of hope for the future.
24.What contributed to Smith’s New Year’s resolution of cleaning her community?
A.Community service. B.A film or television program.
C.Serious pollution in her community. D.Various ocean protection activities.
25.What’s people’s mistaken view about Smith’s action?
A.She was forced to do that.
B.She just pretended to be caring.
C.She actually did only a little work.
D.She wouldn’t stick to the work for long.
26.Why did Smith found The Final Straw?
A.To set a good example to other aged people.
B.To keep her promise to her children and grandchildren.
C.To make people realize the problems with plastic waste.
D.To stop the local companies from producing plastic straws.
27.Which words best describe Smith as an environmental activist?
A.Polite and warm. B.Calm and helpful.
C.Clever and brave. D.Inspiring and determined.

This March marks 30 years since wild gray wolves were released in Yellowstone National Park after having been absent from the area for decades. Their return has given scientists a rare opportunity to research what will happen in an ecosystem when a key species is reintroduced.
As America’s first national park, Yellowstone holds a significant position in the country’s conservation history. Established in 1872, Yellowstone saw rangers (护林员) launch a campaign to exclude wolves, considering them a threat to humans and livestock. The last two wolves in the park were killed in 1926. In 1978, wolves were listed as endangered in most of the US.
Wolves are at the top of the food chain and help keep the populations of other local species at a healthy level. After wolves disappeared from Yellowstone, the elk (麋鹿) population increased, and the elk consumed plants that other species, including hummingbirds and beavers (海狸), depended on for food. At the same time, the number of coyotes increased rapidly as well. As a result, the coyotes hunted and killed a significant proportion of the red foxes living within the park.
In 1995, experts brought a group of wild wolves from Canada to Yellowstone. Over the next two years, 41 wolves from Canada and northwestern Montana were released into the park. The population grew and has remained stable since 2009, typically ranging from 83 to 123 wolves. They are now found throughout Yellowstone and have also established territories outside the park.
Since the return of wolves, elk have spent more time avoiding the enemies and less time eating plants. This leaves more food for beavers, whose population has grown from one colony (群落) to nine. Beavers, in turn, have developed new habitats for other creatures by building dams. Trees have grown taller, creating more homes for birds, and the remains left over from wolves’ hunts have also fed scavenging animals like ravens, bears, and coyotes.
“The Yellowstone story is still unfolding,” ecologist William Ripple told Live Science. “And I’m sure that there will be something amazing waiting for us to discover.”
28.Why was there a campaign to deal with wolves before 1926?
A.They were large in quantities.
B.They were viewed as a danger.
C.Their existence affected the park’s sustainability.
D.Their violent behaviors caused some hurt to tourists.
29.How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A.By listing examples.
B.By giving reasons.
C.By presenting previous studies.
D.By pointing out similarities and differences.
30.What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A.The growth of the wolf population in Yellowstone.
B.The influence of wolves’ return on Yellowstone’s ecosystem.
C.The relationship between wolves and beavers in Yellowstone.
D.The efforts made in hopes of protecting the ecosystem in Yellowstone.
31.What is William Ripple’s attitude to the return of wolves in Yellowstone?
A.Doubtful. B.Negative. C.Unconcerned. D.Positive.

The intelligence of crows (乌鸦) continues to surprise scientists. According to a research published this week in Science, crows can indeed count.
The results show that crows have counting capacities near those of human babies, says lead study author Diana Liao, a researcher at the University of Tübingen in Germany. “We think this is the first time this has been shown for any animal species,” she adds.
Crows do not appear to be capable of symbolic counting, where numbers serve as an exact representation. Instead, the birds count by controlling the number of vocalizations (发出的声音) they produce to correspond to associated hints. This is similar to how young children count before learning symbolic numbers, Liao says. For example, a baby who is asked how many apples are on a tree may answer, “One, one, one”. The baby produces the number of speech sounds which agree with that of the apples, rather than just saying, “Three.”
In the study, Liao and her colleagues presented the crows with randomly ordered hints, four of which were visual-colored numbers that appeared on a touch screen. And four of them were auditory (听觉的), including sounds made by guitars and drums. Through trial and error, the birds had to figure out the correct number of calls to pair with each hint. If they got it right, they received a worm reward.
After receiving about 180 training sessions, all of the crows were able to produce the correct number of vocalizations associated with the hints at a level higher than chance — a “pretty cool” finding, Liao says. She suspects, too, that the crows could have mastered numbers higher than four if they were given the opportunity.
Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany, who was not involved in the research, says the new paper is “excellent” even if the findings are “not unexpected” given all that scientists already know about crows’ intelligence.
32.What is the new research about?
A.Crows’ ability to count.
B.Crows’ skill of solving problems.
C.A comparison between crows and babies.
D.An investigation into auditory ability.
33.Why does the author mention a baby counting apples in paragraph 3?
A.To explain how babies think. B.To clarify how crows count.
C.To illustrate the wisdom of crows. D.To display baby learning progress.
34.How did the crows get the worm rewards?
A.By counting objects on the screen.
B.By picking colors from the touch screen.
C.By choosing between sounds and images.
D.By matching sounds to visual and audio hints.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The results fit with previous findings.
B.The study needs further confirmation.
C.The biopsychologist is critical of the study.
D.The results are beyond scientists’ expectations.

第2节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was just before 8 am, November 17. Pam Bales, an experienced hiker, left the pavement of Base Road and stepped onto snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire’s Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every emergency and intended to walk alone.
She’d checked the weather forecast posted by the Mount Washington Observatory before she left. Based on her experience, Bales knew that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better adjust her body temperature as conditions changed.
The hike up the lower part of Jewell Trail was pleasant. Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. The sun shone through the trees and cast a shadow over her smiling face. Less than an hour later, loads of dark clouds had replaced the sunshine, and snow covered the surrounding trees.
She still smiled. However, the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added even more layers to shelter herself from the cold winds and thick fog. She made her way across the snow-covered ridge (山脊) toward Mount Washington and began to think about turning back. Suddenly, she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her, which were fresh tracks made by someone not long ago. She’d been following faint tracks all day and hadn’t given them much thought, because so many people climb Jewell Trail. But these, she realized, had been made by a pair of trainers, not suitable for hiking on snow. She had a feeling that whoever left those tracks might be in danger—the messy steps suggested these were probably from amateur hikers that had been ill-prepared for the wilderness.
Meanwhile, Bales was getting colder, even though she was moving fast and generating some body heat. With strong wind screaming and attacking her back and left side, she decided to abandon her plan. The only thing, however, kept her on the trail was the footprints in the snow.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:
Bales faced a dilemma about whether to follow the tracks or not.

Bales faced a dilemma about whether to follow the tracks or not. If she chose to follow the tracks, she’d add time and risk to her hiking. But the tracks ahead suggested someone might be in danger. She couldn’t let this go. She called out into the frozen fog, “Is anybody out there? Do you need help?” Then she walked cautiously in the direction of the tracks. Minutes later, she spotted a figure sitting on a rock, trembling in the wind. His face was in pain as he said, “My ankle... I think it’s broken.”
Paragraph 2:
She approached the injured man instantly. Without any hesitation, she covered his body with warm clothes, and then she swiftly wrapped his leg with a bandage from her bag. “We need to get out here as soon as possible,” said Bales. She supported the man and walked slowly along the trail. With great efforts, they managed to get out of the mountain. The man, tears in eyes, whispered, “You saved my life.” Bales simply nodded, knowing no mountain could outweigh a single human heartbeat.
