As with everything else in life, our approach to keeping fit and healthy has evolved over time. For as long as people have been exercising, we have been finding enjoyable and exciting ways to work out. Some trends have stood the test of time while others faded away. Here are five iconic fitness trends through the decades: Hula hooping-1950s Hula hooping was a pastime for ancient Egyptians and Greeks. It rose in popularity in the 1950s when California toy company Wham-O successfully marketed a plastic version of the hula hoop, promising to help burn calories and slim waistlines. While the craze died out quickly, the hula hoop continues to be used as an effective exercise tool and for leisure. Spinning-1990s Spinning launched a cycling revolution in the 1990s which continues to this day, thanks to big-name gyms which have made cycling on stationary bikes a party for participants. Colour-changing lights, high-energy music and enthusiastic instructors have turned spin classes into a lively group activity which has attracted fans around the world. CrossFit-2000s CrossFit has been a firm favourite in the fitness scene since the 2000s. The activity is competitive yet communal, with scores being tracked on a board. Classes typically last an hour or less, making each session an intense and time-efficient workout which many are able to fit into their busy schedules. HIIT-2020s HIIT, which stands for High Intensity Interval Training, gained popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic, along with the rise of home workouts. Exercises, done in short, intense bursts, aim to build strength and endurance. It can be done through free online classes without any equipment, making it an affordable workout at home. 1. Why did hula hooping become popular in the 1950s? A. It was an ancient tradition. B. It was believed to lose weight. C. It was easy to learn. D. It was a competitive class. 2. What made spinning classes fun in the 1990s? A. Long workout sessions. B. Outdoor cycling routes. C. Free bikes for all students. D. Loud music and exciting atmosphere. 3. What is the main purpose of the article? A. To explain how fitness trends changed over time. B. To advertise the newest workout programs in gyms. C. To compare the benefits of different exercise trends. D. To criticize short-lived fitness crazes throughout history. B I used to be the resolute resolution-maker. Even as a child, I was always goal-oriented and loved the feeling of accomplishing things, and every January 1st, I would dutifully sit down and write out my resolutions for the upcoming year. I always picked big goals, like: In the new year, I will lose 50 pounds! And run a marathon! And have a picture-perfect home! Oh, and be the best parent ever who never yelled at my children! The problem? I never accomplished those resolutions. I’d start out strong, but by February or March, I’d be out of willpower and I’d slide quietly back into my old habits. Every winter, I’d feel guilty and ashamed, looking back at all of the amazing things... I didn’t do. Two years ago, I started experiencing severe stomach pain: The doctors weren’t sure what was causing it, and they finally scheduled a surgery to figure it out. But before I could have the surgery, I found a lump (肿块), which was diagnosed as breast cancer. I started treatment for it only to discover that the stomach pain was from appendix cancer. That’s right: two different cancers with two different treatment plans at the same time in the same body. It was a lot to deal with — the next year was incredibly difficult. One good thing I can say about cancer is that it completely changed my perspective on my life — especially about what I consider “success” and “failure”. Before, I always felt like I was failing somewhere, but now simply being alive and with my family felt like a huge success. That was when I decided I was done with New Year’s resolutions. I understand the appeal of having a fresh start, but I have learned from my illnesses that you can take the opportunity to start over at any time. In fact, you can start fresh every day if you want to! January 1st is just a day, and it’s not special. You can make the day you decide to be a better person a special day, regardless of what the calender says. 4. What was the author’s attitude towards New Year’s resolutions in the past? A. Active and determined. B. Practical and cautious. C. Doubtful and worried. D. Confident and open-minded. 5. Why does the author share her personal example in paragraph 3? A. To show off her achievements. B. To complain about her health problems. C To help readers know her feelings better. D. To prove New Year’s decisions never work. 6. Why did the author stop making New Year’s decisions? A. She no longer believed in setting goals. B Her family advised her to focus on daily life. C. She realized they were too difficult to achieve. D. Her health struggles changed her opinion on life. 7. How did the author’s idea of “success” change after her illness? A. From being famous to being healthy. B. From working hard to relaxing more. C. From perfectionism to daily happiness. D. From making money to helping others. C Many scientists once believed that physical similarities between identical twins are genetic, while their personalities, intelligence, and other differences between them are an effect of their environment. But scientists are now discovering that the boundaries between genetics and environment are not so clear after all. Identical twins Jim Springer and Jim Lewis were adopted as babies and raised by different couples. When the two Jims finally met at age 39, they discovered they had plenty in common. Both were 182 centimeters tall and weighed 82 kilograms. They had the same smile and the same voice. When psychologist Thomas Bouchard Jr. invited the Jim twins to his lab, his colleagues found it very hard to tell them apart. But the similarities didn’t stop at the physical. They had both had dogs named Toy. They had both married women named Linda, and then divorced them. They had both enjoyed making things with wood, suffered severe headaches, and admitted to leaving love notes around the house for their wives. They had so much in common that it seemed unlikely these were just coincidences. The Jim twins were just one of 137 sets of separated twins Bouchard tested. When they compared the twins’ IQ scores, Bouchard and his team reached a surprising conclusion. They concluded that intelligence was mostly connected to genetics rather than to training or education. It seemed the differences in family and environment had little effect. However, genes can’t control everything, argues geneticist Danielle Reed, who also studies twins. Reed’s research shows that, though nothing can truly change our DNA, environmental differences that a child experiences before birth and in their first year can sometimes affect the way the DNA behaves. This can make even identical twins into vastly different people. “What I like to say is that Mother Nature writes some things in pencil and some things in pen,” she explains. “Things written in pen you can't change. That’s DNA. But things written in pencil you can.” 8. What was the main purpose of Thomas Bouchard Jr.’s study of the Jim twins? A. To prove physical similarities are purely genetic. B. To study how genetics and environment affect people. C. To show adopted children always look like their parents. D. To argue that environment has little effect on human behavior. 9. How can early environmental differences affect identical twins by Danielle Reed? A. By making them act the same. B. By making them look different. C. By affecting how their DNA works. D. By completely changing their DNA. 10. What’s the meaning of the “pen and pencil” comparison in the last paragraph? A. Some things you’re born with, some you learn. B. Our bodies stay the same, but our minds change. C. Intelligence is written in pencil, and bodies in pen. D. Often twins look alike in body but think differently. 11. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. How identical twins are formed. B. The effects genes have on personality. C. The differences between identical twins. D. How genes and environment affect twins' growth. D Foxes are known for being cunning and resourceful but a study suggests another surprising talent. Research from the Czech Republic (捷克共和国) indicates these creatures may use the Earth’s magnetic field when hunting. The study, led by Jaroslav Červený, tracked wild red foxes for over two years, recording nearly 600 hunting leaps by 84 foxes. Researchers found the animals mostly jumped in a northeasterly direction, regardless of the time of day, season, or weather conditions. This preferred leaping direction resulted in a much higher kill rate, with foxes finding success on 13% of their northeasterly pounces (猛扑) on their prey. The results push Červený to conclude that foxes are able to detect subtle variations in the Earth’s magnetic field, which lean downward in the northern hemisphere. As a fox creeps closer to its target, it listens for sounds from the animals it is hunting. The sweet spot occurs when the angle at which sound reaches its ears matches the slope of the Earth’s magnetic field. Essentially, the fox uses the magnetic field as a “rangefinder” to estimate the distance to its prey, thereby increasing the possibility of successfully capturing a meal. The potential use of magnetism to improve hunting ability is not the only surprising aspect of the fox’s complex behavior. The furry creatures are also known for their wide range of vocal expressions. They can produce a surprising range of sounds — up to 40 in total! The most well-known fox vocalization is the scream-like howl, but they also use barks, chatters, and whines to communicate with each other. These sounds are used to defend territory, attract mates, and care for their young. Besides the variety of sounds foxes utter and their possible use of the Earth’s magnetic field, there are numerous other interesting facts about foxes. But those are topics for another day. 12. How did researchers make their conclusions regarding foxes? A. By observing a caged fox over years. B. By examining their behaviors for years. C. By calculating the Earth’s magnetic field. D. By listening to their sounds while hunting. 13. How does the Earth’s magnetic field assist foxes in hunting? A. By confusing prey. B. By acting as a “rangefinder”. C. By attracting mates. D. By guiding migration. 14. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Why foxes are smarter than other creatures. B. Foxes’ changing behavior in different seasons. C. How foxes’ hunting skills compare to other animals. D. Foxes’ amazing sounds and other unknown behaviors. 15. Which of the following could be the best title of the passage? A. Weather’s Effect on Fox Hunting Success B. The Life of Red Foxes: A Scientific Study C. How Foxes Use Earth’s Magnetic Field to Hunt D. Sarah, a high school student, pulled her coat tighter as she hurried home from school. The sun had already set, and the dim streetlights cast long shadows on the snow-covered pavement. As she turned the corner, a faint whimper (微弱的声音) caught her attention. She stopped and looked around, her breath forming little clouds in the freezing air. Then she saw it — a small, trembling puppy curled up near a frozen puddle. Its golden fur was matted with dirt, and its ribs were visible under its thin coat. The poor creature lifted its head weakly, its dark eyes filled with fear and exhaustion. Sarah’s heart ached. She had always loved animals, but her parents had strict rules — no pets, no exceptions. They believed pets were too much responsibility for a busy student. Still, the sight of the helpless puppy made her hesitate. “I can’t just leave you here,” she murmured, kneeling beside it. The puppy shivered violently, and without thinking, Sarah took off her scarf and gently wrapped it. With the puppy cradled (轻抱) in her arms, she quickened her pace toward home. Her mind raced — what would her parents say? Would they make her take it back outside? But the puppy’s warmth against her chest gave her courage. She knew she couldn’t abandon it. When she finally reached her house, she took a deep breath and opened the door. Her mother, who was setting the dinner table, turned around — and froze. “Sarah!” she gasped, staring at the small bundle in her daughter’s arms. “What on earth is that?” Sarah held the puppy tighter, her heart racing as she waited for her mother’s reaction. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ That evening, Sarah’s whole family found excuses to visit the garage (车库). _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024-2025学年第二学期期中学业水平检测 高二英语试题 2025.05 注意事项: 1. A Humans are always exploring new ways to feel, look and live better. A To prove physical similarities are purely genetic. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第四段中“When they compared the twins’ IQ scores, Bouchard and his team reached a surprising conclusion. They concluded that intelligence was mostly connected to genetics rather than to training or education. It seemed the differences in family and environment had little effect.(当他们比较这对双胞胎的智商分数时,布沙尔和他的团队得出了一个令人惊讶的结论。他们得出的结论是,智力主要与遗传有关,而不是与训练或教育有关。家庭和环境的差异似乎没有什么影响)”可知,Thomas Bouchard Jr.对吉姆双胞胎的研究的主要目的是研究遗传和环境如何影响人们。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Reed’s research shows that, though nothing can truly change our DNA, environmental differences that a child experiences before birth and in their first year can sometimes affect the way the DNA behaves.(里德的研究表明,虽然没有什么能真正改变我们的DNA,但孩子在出生前和第一年所经历的环境差异有时会影响DNA的行为方式)”可知,早期的环境差异通过影响同卵双胞胎的DNA发挥作用来影响他们。 根据最后一段中““What I like to say is that Mother Nature writes some things in pencil and some things in pen,” she explains. “Things written in pen you can't change. That’s DNA. But things written in pencil you can.”(“我喜欢说的是,大自然母亲用铅笔写一些东西,用钢笔写一些东西,”她解释说。“用钢笔写的东西你无法改变。那是DNA。但是用铅笔写的东西你可以改变”)”可知,最后一段中“pen and pencil”的比较意思是“有些东西是你与生俱来的,有些是你后天学习的”。故选A。 根据第一段中“But scientists are now discovering that the boundaries between genetics and environment are not so clear after all.(但科学家们现在发现,遗传和环境之间的界限并不那么清晰)”以及结合全文内容可知,这篇文章主要讲了基因和环境如何影响双胞胎的成长。故选D。 D Foxes are known for being cunning and resourceful, but a study suggests another surprising talent. Fox Sounds: How They Communicate in the Wild 【答案】12. B 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第一段中“The study, led by Jaroslav Červený, tracked wild red foxes for over two years, recording nearly 600 hunting leaps by 84 foxes. Researchers found the animals mostly jumped in a northeasterly direction, regardless of the time of day, season, or weather conditions. (这项研究由Jaroslav Červený领导,对野生赤狐进行了两年多的跟踪,记录了84只狐狸近600次狩猎跳跃。研究人员发现,无论白天、季节或天气条件如何,这些动物大多向东北方向跳跃)”可知,研究人员通过观察狐狸多年的行为来得出关于狐狸的结论。故选B。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Essentially, the fox uses the magnetic field as a “rangefinder” to estimate the distance to its prey, thereby increasing the possibility of successfully capturing a meal. (从本质上讲,狐狸利用磁场作为“测距仪”来估计它与猎物之间的距离,从而增加了成功捕获猎物的可能性)”可知,地球的磁场通过充当“测距仪”来帮助狐狸狩猎。故选B。 【14题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“The potential use of magnetism to improve hunting ability is not the only surprising aspect of the fox’s complex behavior. The furry creatures are also known for their wide range of vocal expressions. They can produce a surprising range of sounds — up to 40 in total! But stress does disappear, when you consider the problem and work on solving it 【答案】16. E 17. F 18. C 19. A 20. 空处和后文为总分关系,下文“Talk to someone, such as a parent, other relatives and a teacher. And don’t forget your friends.(与某人交谈,如父母、其他亲戚和老师。别忘了你的朋友)”是对获取支持的具体举例。所以F项“当你需要帮助时,向关心你的人求助”符合语境。该选项中的“reach out to the people who care about you”与后文列举的交谈对象相呼应,点明“获取支持”的具体方式。故选F。 【18题详解】 上文“Notice your feelings and think about why you feel that way.(注意你的感受,并思考你为什么会有这样的感觉)”说明要关注自己的感受并思考原因。空处和前后文为步骤顺承关系,下文“Do breathing exercises, listen to music or do whatever helps you be in a better mood.(做呼吸练习、听音乐或做任何能让你心情更好的事情)”是冷静下来的具体方法。所以C项“然后,找到一种方法来冷静下来并表达它们”符合语境。该选项中的 “Then”承接前文步骤,“find a way to calm down”对应后文的具体放松方式,逻辑上构成“注意感受→思考原因→冷静表达”的连贯流程。故选C。 【19题详解】 下文“Remember that there are always people to help you. Be kind to yourself and ask for the helping hand that you need and get you through the tough situation you're facing.(记住,总有人会帮助你。善待自己,寻求你需要的帮助,帮助你度过你正在面临的困境)”可知,本段主要讲述的是不要把压力都自己扛,要寻求帮助。空处为段落小标题,为本段主要内容。所以A项“不要把压力都发泄在自己身上。”符合语境。故选A。 【20题详解】 上文“It may not seem like it when you're in the middle of a stressful situation.(当你处于压力之中时,可能并不这么认为)”说明在压力之中时,可能并不觉得压力会消失。空处和前文为转折关系,需说明压力的本质会随行动改变。所以G项“但当你考虑问题并努力解决它时,压力确实会消失。”符合语境。该选项中的 But表转折,“stress does disappear”与前文“may not seem like it”形成对比,且“when you consider the problem and work on solving it”呼应前文“Try to solve the problem”的建议,逻辑上形成“认知压力→解决问题→压力消失”的闭环。故选G。 二、语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 In a small village at the foot of a towering mountain lived a young woman named Maya. “What on earth is that?” 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Sarah held the puppy tighter, her heart racing as she waited for her mother’s reaction. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ That evening, Sarah’s whole family found excuses to visit the garage (车库). _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: Sarah held the puppy tighter, her heart racing as she waited for her mother’s reaction. Her mother’s face hardened for a moment, but then she noticed the puppy’s trembling body. “Oh, poor thing,” she murmured softly. “Mom, I know we can’t keep it,” Sarah said quickly, “but it was freezing outside. I thought maybe just for tonight...” Her mother sighed deeply, then reached out to touch the puppy’s head. “Go to get some old towels from the laundry room,” she finally agreed. “We’ll make it a bed in the garage for now.” Sarah nodded vigorously, with her eyes filled with gratitude. That evening, Sarah’s whole family found excuses to visit the garage. Her father claimed to “check on the car,” but spent ten minutes cooling at Buddy. Sarah’s little brother “wanted to explore,” but just wanted to pet Buddy’s soft fur. Even her mother “looked for a tool,” yet stayed to feed Buddy some milk. Each time they returned inside, their faces were softer, more attached. When seeing her family interact with the puppy, Sarah realized something wonderful — though they couldn’t keep it forever, for tonight at least, they were all united in helping this little creature. And that, in its own way, was just as special. 2.续写线索:发现小狗——Sarah带小狗回家——等待母亲反应——母亲同意暂时收留小狗——家人借故亲近小狗——Sarah意识到家人因小狗而团结,感受特别 行为类 ① 注意到:notice/take notice of ② 快速地说:say quickly/speak hurriedly/talk rapidly ③ 喂Buddy牛奶:feed Buddy some milk/give Buddy milk to drink/nourish Buddy with milk 情绪类 ① 可怜的:poor/pitiful ② 感激:gratitude/appreciation 【点睛】【高分句型1】“Mom, I know we can’t keep it,” Sarah said quickly, “but it was freezing outside.
