He had been stationed there while in the army, and now, so many years later, he wanted to go back, this time for pleasure. But an illness in that same army led to the final loss of his hearing, and now his near deafness made traveling alone impossible. My mother didn’t like to camp. So he turned to me — a lover of the outdoors who looked forward to adventures. We planned to leave immediately following my college graduation that June. There was just one problem. I got a job. My new employer wanted me to report to work immediately and I promised to show up on time, mentally canceling the trip to Alaska. Taking the job was logical. It didn’t make sense to go to college for four years, and then turn down the very career opportunity I’d been looking for. At least it seemed not to ... until I saw the look on my father’s face when I informed him of the news. Without another word, I called my new boss and explained the situation. If he couldn’t hold the position for me for the three weeks when I’d be traveling, then he’d simply have to give it to somebody else. I knew he wouldn’t have any difficulty with the latter choice — career opportunities in the field of forestry at that time were few and far between, and there were many more job applicants than positions available to them. It turned out to be the right decision. At first, I was homesick and felt upset about having to put my own plans aside to meet my father’s. Thankfully my moodiness didn’t last long. It was impossible to resist (抵挡) the beauty surrounding me, the adventures awaiting me, and my father’s love enveloping me. After we returned, I was so excited to know that my employer did hold my position open for me, and I worked for that company for eight wonderful years. When I chose to honor my father’s wishes above my own, I truly got the best of both worlds. 21. What can we learn about the author’s father in paragraph 1? A. He had poor hearing. B. He led an adventurous life. C. He had never traveled alone. D. He didn’t get on with his wife. 22. What problem did the author have? A. He failed to make a career choice. B. He couldn’t impress his new employer. C. His travel plan conflicted with his job. D. His father couldn’t attend his graduation ceremony. 23. How did the author feel at the beginning of the trip? A. Embarrassed. B. Nervous. C. Unhappy. D. Unlucky. 24. Which of the following words can best describe the new employer? A. Creative. B. Moody. C. Strict. D. Considerate. 25. How does the author feel about his decision to travel with his father in the end? A. Regretful and angry. B. Confused and helpless. C. Satisfied and thankful. D. Indifferent and neutral. B As well as impressive physical characteristics, elephants have rich cultural customs, passed down through customs and social behaviour which is learned, remembered, and shared within their herds (种群). This is possible partly because of their social structure. Elephants live in complex, tightly knit, multi-generational societies, led by older females known as matriarch (女家长). Younger elephants observe and imitate the behaviour of their elders, learning through experience. It helps that the herd does almost everything together, from feeding to raising each others’ young. These communications lead to deep long-lasting relationships, which can last for decades. Possibly because of these links, elephants seem to have emotional capability. Just like humans, the creatures have been seen displaying signs of grief. When an elephant dies, others in the herd have been observed to repeatedly return to where the individual passed, which is said to be part of a mourning (哀悼) ceremony. They may sniff and touch the body and bones and cover the site with leaves and sand. Moreover, a 2020 study by researchers Goldenberg and Wittemyer found that “elephants show broad interest in their dead regardless of the strength of former relationships with the dead individual”, which may indicate advanced sensation, the scientists say. There’s a saying found in many languages — “an elephant never forgets”. In fact, memory has been necessary to the survival of some elephant herds. A study within Great Kruger National Park found that, during an extreme drought in 2016, elephant groups led by matriarchs who had previously lived through a serious drought, had higher survival rates. Researchers concluded that the matriarchs likely remembered where sources of water could be located. So, count yourself lucky that you live on the same planet as these large majestic animals. 26. What is the main idea of the second paragraph? A. How elephants develop cultural traditions through social structure. B. The physical characteristics of elephant herds. C. The dangers faced by young elephants. D. The diet of elephants in different seasons. 27. What does the underlined sentence in the third paragraph mean? A. physical strength. B. ability to feel emotions. C. hunting skills. D. communication methods. 28. According to the 2020 study, what behavior did elephants show toward the dead? A. They only mourned close family members. B. They avoided the remains of dead elephants. C. They showed interest regardless of past relationships. D. They buried the dead immediately after death. 29. Why does the author mention the 2016 drought in Great Kruger National Park? A. To prove elephants have poor survival skills. B. To show the importance of memory in elephant survival. C. To criticize human interference in nature. D. To explain how elephants find food. 30. What is the author’s attitude toward elephants in the last sentence ? A. Indifferent. B. Admiring. C. Doubtful. D. Negative. C To early childhood educator Erika Christakis, schooling and learning are two different things. According to one study she cites in her well-researched book, The Importance of Being Little  25% of Los Angeles kindergarteners were allowed no time at all for free play. Three and four-year-olds can make discoveries for themselves if given the mental space to do so and freed from typical overplanned activities. But too often teachers themselves are managed by higher-ups (with too much attention to details), expected to hew to fixed lesson plans, and given little flexibility. Some say they have little time to bond with their students. “Kids are being too much talked at rather than listened to.” This “crushes (毁坏)” their curiosity. In America, reading, writing, and the cognitive (认知的) demands that have been traditionally introduced in second or third grades have been pushed forward to preschools — to 3-year-olds “who lack the motor skills and attention span (持续时间) to be successful.” Christakis argues that forcing academic rigor (严格) at such an early age has led preschoolers to do worse, not better. She admires the philosophies of Waldorf and Steiner schools, which teach young children handiwork such as weaving or woodwork “as part of an imaginative and story-driven curriculum (课程).” They have nature outings for children aged three to six. They sleep in tents with only their teachers and other children (no texting nor parents allowed everywhere near for days). They learn from nature and everyday experience, invent their own games, choose their own playmates, and settle their own conflicts. They learn to dress themselves, make meals, and help one another. At night they sing around a campfire. Here at home, early education in Christakis’s telling seems to have been overtaken by well-intentioned politicians who don’t understand the first thing about how children actually learn. Alphabets, slogans, and rhymes on the walls are too much for “young children when they can’t even yet read.” Students need less “desk work” and vocabulary drills, she says, and more talking with and listening to adults who “invite the child to be reflective.” 31. Which of the following best explains “hew to” underlined in paragraph 1? A. Give up. B. Break up. C. Contribute to. D. Stick to. 32. What is Erika Christakis’s opinion on American preschool education? A It focuses too much on traditional subjects. B. It negatively affects children’s development. C. It fails to teach children reading and writing skills. D. It is disconnected from the reality of primary schools. 33. What does paragraph 3 tell us about Waldorf and Steiner schools? A. They disallow texting in the classrooms. B. Their communication with parents is effective. C. They advocate an outdoor learning environment. D. Their courses rely heavily on teacher involvement. 34. What do children actually need according to Erika Christakis? A. Inspiring conversations. B. Appropriate learning resources. C. Repetitive reading exercises. D. Quality family time. 35. What is the main idea of this passage? A. Early education should stress structured academic lessons. B. Preschool policies are overly influenced by politicians. C. Nature-based activities are key to child development. D. Early education should stress play and exploration. When choosing to add a pet to the family, you may spend more time focusing on the joy and happiness you expect your new pet will bring. ____36____ Though there is no true definition of a responsible pet parent, these are a few widely accepted tips to help you create a happy, healthy life for your furry friends Food and shelter ____37____ Your pets will need continuous access to clean water, healthy and nutritious food, and shelter from the elements. It has come to my attention that some pupils are still using the chairs inside the gym to eat their lunch. I think that’s okay during cold or rainy weather, as it’s more comfortable to do so. In fine weather, all the students can eat outside on the field or in the playground. But in future, I must ask you to take your food to the dining room instead. Students need the gym to practice at lunchtimes and prefer to do so without being watched. Another reason is that any food dropped onto the floor can cause a cleaning problem. If pupils have any difficulty with this request, please do mention it to your form teacher Thank you for your help with this matter. Working together is better for school life and reminds us to be responsible towards others. That’s all. Thanks for listening. Now, please go out of the gym and back to your lessons. A My father wanted to go to Alaska, but he couldn’t go alone. 21. B. Admiring. C. Doubtful. D. Negative. A 27. B 28. C 29. B 30. 根据第二段“This is possible partly because of their social structure. Elephants live in complex, tightly knit, multi-generational societies, led by older females known as matriarch. Younger elephants observe and imitate the behaviour of their elders, learning through experience.(这在一定程度上是因为它们的社会结构。大象生活在复杂、紧密结合、多代同堂的社会中,由年长的雌象领导。年轻的大象观察并模仿它们长辈的行为,通过经验学习。)”可知,第二段主要讲述了大象如何通过社会结构发展文化传统。故选A。 根据上文“Possibly because of these links, elephants seem to have emotional capability.(或许由于这些联系,大象似乎具备情感能力。)”和下文“which may indicate advanced sensation(这可能表明它们具有高级的感知能力)”可知,大象似乎具有感受情绪的能力,由此可知,划线句子的“elephants show broad interest in their dead regardless of the strength of former relationships with the dead individual”意为“感受情绪的能力”。 根据第三段“a 2020 study by researchers Goldenberg and Wittemyer found that “elephants show broad interest in their dead regardless of the strength of former relationships with the dead individual”(2020年,研究人员Goldenberg和Wittemyer的一项研究发现,“大象对它们的死者表现出广泛的兴趣,无论它们与死者之前的关系如何。”)” 根据第四段“A study within Great Kruger National Park found that, during an extreme drought in 2016, elephant groups led by matriarchs who had previously lived through a serious drought, had higher survival rates. Researchers concluded that the matriarchs likely remembered where sources of water could be located.(大克鲁格国家公园内的一项研究发现,在2016年的一场极端干旱中,由经历过严重干旱的母象领导的象群具有更高的存活率。研究人员得出结论,母象可能记得水源的位置。)”可知,作者提到大克鲁格国家公园2016年的干旱是为了展示记忆在大象生存中的重要性。故选B。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“So, count yourself lucky that you live on the same planet as these large majestic animals.(所以,你应该庆幸自己和这些大型威严的动物生活在同一个星球上。)” B。 C To early childhood educator Erika Christakis, schooling and learning are two different things. A. It focuses too much on traditional subjects. D 32. B 33. C 34. A 35. 根据第一段“But too often teachers themselves are managed by higher-ups (with too much attention to details), expected to hew to fixed lesson plans, and given little flexibility.(但很多时候,教师本身受到上级的管理(过于注重细节),被期望_____固定的课程计划,并且几乎没有灵活性。)”中的“fixed lesson plans”和“given little flexibility”可知,教师需要按照固定的课程计划进行教学,几乎没有灵活性,由此可知,hew to意为“坚持”。 根据第二段“Christakis argues that forcing academic rigor at such an early age has led preschoolers to do worse, not better.(Christakis认为,在这么小的年纪就强迫进行严格的学术训练,导致学前儿童的表现更差,而不是更好。)” 根据第三段“They have nature outings for children aged three to six.(他们为三到六岁的孩子安排了自然郊游。)” 根据最后一段“Students need less “desk work” and vocabulary drills, she says, and more talking with and listening to adults who “invite the child to be reflective”.(她说,学生需要更少的“课桌作业”和词汇练习,而需要更多地与那些“邀请孩子进行反思”的成年人交谈和倾听。)” 故选A。 根据第一段“Three and four-year-olds can make discoveries for themselves if given the mental space to do so and freed from typical overplanned activities.(如果给三四岁的孩子提供思考的空间,并让他们摆脱典型的过度计划的活动,他们就能自己做出发现。)”和最后一段“Students need less “desk work” and vocabulary drills, she says, and more talking with and listening to adults who “invite the child to be reflective.”(她说,学生需要更少的“课桌作业”和词汇练习,而需要更多地与那些“邀请孩子进行反思”的成年人交谈和倾听。)” When choosing to add a pet to the family, you may spend more time focusing on the joy and happiness you expect your new pet will bring. ____36____ Though there is no true definition of a responsible pet parent, these are a few widely accepted tips to help you create a happy, healthy life for your furry friends Food and shelter ____37____ Your pets will need continuous access to clean water, healthy and nutritious food, and shelter from the elements. This can help him be more cooperative, comfortable, and confident in the home environment. E 37. D 38. F 39. G 40. 【36题详解】 上文“When choosing to add a pet to the family, you may spend more time focusing on the joy and happiness you expect your new pet will bring.(当选择给家里增添一只宠物时,你可能会花更多时间关注你期望新宠物会带来的快乐和幸福)”说明当选择养宠物时,人们往往会关注宠物带来的快乐。 空后“Your pets will need continuous access to clean water, healthy and nutritious food, and shelter from the elements.(你的宠物需要持续获得清洁的水、健康营养的食物和躲避风雨的住所)” 具体说明宠物对生活必需品的需求。 该选项中的“basic necessities of life”与后文的“clean water, healthy food, shelter”相对应,起到总领该部分内容的作用。故选D。 【38题详解】 上文“Regular preventive care is key to helping your pet live a long and healthy life. It’s best to establish a relationship with a veterinarian (兽医) to help keep you on track with regular check-ups and vaccinations (接种疫苗).(定期的预防性护理是帮助你的宠物长寿和健康生活的关键。最好与兽医建立关系,帮助你定期进行检查和接种疫苗)”说明与兽医建立关系对宠物健康的重要性。空处和前文为顺接关系,进一步说明随着宠物年龄增长,与兽医建立关系的好处。所以F项“随着宠物年龄的增长,与兽医建立关系也会有所帮助。”符合语境。该选项中的“An established relationship with a veterinarian”与上文提到的“establish a relationship with a veterinarian”相呼应,故选F。 【39题详解】 上文“Behavioral issues are the number one reason why animals are abandoned to shelters, so training and socializing your pets helps make sharing your homes with them much easier. For example, a dog who has been trained in basic obedience (服从) knows what behaviors are acceptable and what is expected of him.(行为问题是动物被遗弃到收容所的首要原因,所以训练和社交你的宠物有助于更容易地与它们共享家园。例如,一只接受过基本服从训练的狗知道什么行为是可以接受的,以及人们对它的期望)”说明训练和社交宠物的重要性,并以接受过基本服从训练的狗为例。空处和前文为顺接关系,进一步说明训练对狗在家环境中的好处。所以G项“这可以帮助他在家庭环境中更加合作、舒适和自信。”符合语境。该选项中的This指代上文提到的“a dog who has been trained in basic obedience”。故选G。 【40题详解】 上文“Love(爱)”为标题,空后“They are companions who depend on you for their care. They are in tune with you and live for your happiness.(他们是依靠你照顾的伙伴。他们与你合拍,为你的幸福而活)” 强调宠物是依赖主人的伙伴,而非物品。空处承上启下,说明宠物不是你的所属物,而是需要你照顾的伴侣。所以A项“你的宠物不是你的所属物。”符合语境。该选项中的“not belongings”与后文的“companions who depend on you”形成对比,突出“爱”意味着将宠物视为伙伴而非所有物,与前后文形成顺接关系。故选A。 Growing up, I hated every girl who could skip.
