Four Excellent Museums for Kids to Explore
An injection of knowledge, Leeds
The Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds is giving a huge makeover recently. It features a Victorian street full of real smells and bugs, and presents shows of the impact of some terrible infectious diseases — cholera and smallpox before vaccinations. There are talks, displays, games as well as some information about health heroes over the years.
Adults: £12; children aged 5-15: £10; children under 5: free.
Follow that train, Walthamstow, London
A huge steam engine stands at the entrance to the small, indoor-outdoor Walthamstow Pumphouse Museum. Two 1967 Victoria Line carriages sit side by side with the cabs open to the would-be train drivers. Fireman Frank display s the fire engine featured in TV programs such as London’s Burning.
Free entrance.
Life through a lens, Edinburgh
The Camera Obscura and World of Illusions experience in Edinburgh presents a unique view of the city in the past. With over 100 interactive exhibits on five floors, it is completely kid-friendly with no “don’t touch” signs. There’s a perspective room where younger children can dance with their own shadow, match their face with a monkey’s, serve their head on a plate and even lie on a shark.
Adults: £16; children aged 5-15: £12; children under 5: free.
Go back in time, Chichester, West Sussex
Anybody who wants to see, touch and even smell what life was like in ancient times should head to the Weald and Downland Living Museum — a museum with rural buildings ranging from early medieval England to the Victorian Age, and a multisensory, living presentation. There are also farm animals to visit, a wood and playground to burn off energy, and traditional games in one big house if it rains.

After I graduated with a Master’s in public relations in 2010, my first boss congratulated me, but he also brought me right back down to earth pretty quickly when he told me that I’d have to continue my education in order to progress throughout my career. I remember feeling shocked at the prospect, as I had sworn (发誓) I was done with essays and exams forever. Yet, here I was, hearing that I’d never truly be fully “educated”. I keep his words in mind, and whenever I find myself at a crossroads, I turn to education.
When I decided to do an MBA in 2021, the big questions for me were: Where, and when? Dublin City University (DCU) stood out as I had benefited from what the university offered while studying for my degree in multimedia back in 2005. The course also took place on Thursdays, which allowed me flexibility at weekends. This was essential to balancing the course with my full-time work and family commitments.
Over the two years of the course, I changed jobs twice, moving into global roles, which required a whole new degree of performance and commitment at work. I went to two FIFA World Cups leading social impact campaigns as part of the FIFA Communications team, and I was pregnant with my first child during my final term. Each of my classmates had their own unique journeys as well. Life happens anyway.
I think the real question when you’re pursuing further education is “why”. If your “why” is strong enough and you truly believe in the benefits, the sacrifices(牺牲) that come alongside studying part-time become much easier. Our class gathered together each Thursday, enjoying the companionship beyond our traditional networking, which is truly a “money can’t buy” bonus of taking the course. I also found myself going into work each week with new strings added to my bow. I have seen my career progress in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
And as for the advice of my first boss, surely I’m finished with essays and exams by now.
24. Why did the author choose to study part-time at DCU?
A. It enabled her to study on weekends. B. It had a reputation for MBA programs.
C. She had positive experience at DCU. D. She could set her own class schedule.
25. What happened to the author while she was pursuing her MBA?
A. She got another college degree. B. She put her family ahead of work.
C. She completely changed her career. D. She advanced her professional career.
26. What is an unexpected benefit of taking the MBA course?
A. Starting a family. B. Developing friendships.
C. Avoiding personal sacrifices. D. Getting more job opportunities.
27. What motivated the author to take lifelong education?
A. Her desire for self-improvement. B. Her belief in its benefits.
C. Her family’s encouragement. D. Her classmates’ persuasion.

Mark and Bert are good friends for most of their lives. A few years ago, when Mark was nine, he developed a serious disease(疾病). The disease took away the boy’s eyesight, part of his hearing and his ability to play his favorite sport. However, throughout the years, Bert remained his closest friend. They shared their love of Australian football and enjoyed talking about the Sydney Swans, their favorite team.
Two weeks ago, I took my seat at Sydney Cricket Ground to watch the Swans. The old stadium (体育场) was full of fans. Shortly into the second quarter, I heard someone describing the match. It was Bert who was bringing the match to life. I turned and saw him. Mark was sitting next to him.
Although he could not see anymore, Mark still loved the Swans very much. Usually, he went to the stadium and listened to the match on the radio. However, in the second quarter of that match, the radio broke down. That was when his friend Bert came in.
I hardly paid attention to the Swans and Buddy, the team’s star player. Instead, I was listening to Bert and Mark. “What’s happening now? ” Mark asked. “Don’t worry, Mark, ”Bert said. “Okay. Buddy’s got it. Will he go for it? He’s going for it! It’s his tenth goal! Buddy is on fire! ”Mark listened carefully. He was lost in the magic of Australian football brought to life by his friend. And I was really moved by this heart-warming moment.
28. What did Mark and Bert have in common?
A. They were fans of Buddy. B. They were at the same age.
C. They loved Australian football. D. They had the same serious disease.
29. When did Bert come to help?
A. When the match began. B. When the radio broke down.
C. When Buddy got the tenth goal. D. When the second quarter was over.
30. What did Bert mean by saying “Buddy is on fire”?
A. Buddy was angry. B. Buddy was in danger.
C. Buddy was running so fast. D. Buddy was playing quite well.
31. What is Bert like according to the text?
A. Kind and helpful. B. Brave and honest.
C. Quiet and friendly. D. Serious and polite.

Encouraging people to exercise outdoors could help to prevent several conditions including depression and type 2 diabetes, the first study of its kind has found. Physical activity in natural environments prevents almost 13,000 cases of non-communicable(非传染的) diseases (NCDs) a year in England and saves treatment costs of more than £100m, researchers from the University of Exeter said.
NCDs are a group of conditions that cannot be spread between people and result in long-term health problems. The most common — including heart and lung disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes — cause 74 percent of global deaths and are on the rise, according to the World Health Organisation.
The Exeter study focused on places such as beaches and coasts, countryside and open spaces in towns and cities, such as parks. Using data including a survey of the English population, the research team estimated(估计) how many cases of six NCDs — major depressive disorder (MDD), type 2 diabetes, ischaemic(局部的) heart disease, ischaemic stroke, colon cancer, and breast cancer — are prevented through nature-based recreational exercise.
In 2019, 22 million adults in England aged 16 years or older visited natural environments at least once a week. Using reported exercise levels, the researchers estimated that this prevented 12,763 cases of NCDs — the vast majority being MDD — creating annual healthcare savings of £108.7m.
Although it has been reported that exercising specifically in natural environments is more helpful for a lot of emotional outcomes compared with urban environments, this is the first such survey conducted on a national wide, the research team said.
“We have almost certainly underestimated the true value of nature-based physical activity in terms of disease prevention,” Dr James Grellier from the University of Exeter Medical School, said. The team hope that their study, published in Environment International, encourages investment in spaces such as parks to make it easier for people to be physically active.

第二节(共5 小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
An earthquake happens when two plates(板块) rub together. The earth plates travel in different directions and at different speeds. 36 In other words, earthquakes are the shaking of the earth’s surface caused by the earth’s rocky outer layer. The energy stored within is suddenly released.
The damage an earthquake causes depends on where it is and when it is happening. If a place where nobody lives is struck, there will be low loss of life or property. 37 Many of the areas at risk are largely populated now. Major earthquakes hitting those areas today could produce terrible damage. 38 Fortunately, however, most of them are unnoticed to the public because of the small Richter scale’(筤级). But large earthquakes such as the 1964 Alaskan quake that measured 9.2 on the Richter scale, can cause millions of dollars in damage.
39 In 1972, a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua. Fifteen years later, the city still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the city was in such a mess that it didn’t have the money necessary to rebuild it.
The shaking of the earth is sometimes not the greatest disaster. 40 In the 1906 earthquake, it was the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage. An earthquake can also destroy dams high above a city or valleys, causing floods to sweep away everything in their path.
A. The greatest damage often occurs in the fires and floods.
B. In fact, there are millions of small earthquakes every year.
C. Throughout history, there are many destructive big earthquakes.
D. So it is very important to predict the movements of the earth plates.
E. If it hits a large city, there may be many injuries and much destruction.
F. The destructive damage of an earthquake can last for years after the first shake.
G. If one plate is slowly forced under the other, pressure builds up until the plates break apart.

After I graduated with a Master’s in public relations in 2010, my first boss congratulated me, but he also
brought me right back down to earth pretty quickly when he told me that I’d have to continue my education in order
to progress throughout my career. I remember feeling shocked at the prospect, as I had sworn (发誓) I was done with
essays and exams forever. Yet, here I was, hearing that I’d never truly be fully “educated”. I keep his words in mind,
and whenever I find myself at a crossroads, I turn to education.
When I decided to do an MBA in 2021, the big questions for me were: Where, and when? Dublin City
University (DCU) stood out as I had benefited from what the university offered while studying for my degree in
multimedia back in 2005. The course also took place on Thursdays, which allowed me flexibility at weekends. This
was essential to balancing the course with my full-time work and family commitments.
Over the two years of the course, I changed jobs twice, moving into global roles, which required a whole new
degree of performance and commitment at work. I went to two FIFAWorld Cups leading social impact campaigns as
part of the FIFA Communications team, and I was pregnant with my first child during my final term. Each of my
classmates had their own unique journeys as well. Life happens anyway.
I think the real question when you’re pursuing further education is “why”. If your “why” is strong enough and
you truly believe in the benefits, the sacrifices(牺牲) that come alongside studying part-time become much easier.
Our class gathered together each Thursday, enjoying the companionship beyond our traditional networking, which is
truly a “money can’t buy” bonus of taking the course. I also found myself going into work each week with new
strings added to my bow.

A few years ago, when Mark was nine, he developed a
serious disease(疾病 ). The disease took away the boy’s eyesight, part of his hearing and his ability to play his
favorite sport. However, throughout the years, Bert remained his closest friend. They shared their love of Australian
football and enjoyed talking about the Sydney Swans, their favorite team.
Two weeks ago, I took my seat at Sydney Cricket Ground to watch the Swans. The old stadium (体育场) was
full of fans. Shortly into the second quarter, I heard someone describing the match. It was Bert who was bringing the
match to life. I turned and saw him. Mark was sitting next to him.
Although he could not see anymore, Mark still loved the Swans very much. Usually, he went to the stadium
and listened to the match on the radio. However, in the second quarter of that match, the radio broke down. That was
when his friend Bert came in.
I hardly paid attention to the Swans and Buddy, the team’s star player. Instead, I was listening to Bert and
Mark. “What’s happening now? ” Mark asked. “Don’t worry, Mark, ”Bert said. “Okay. Buddy’s got it. Will he go for
it? He’s going for it! It’s his tenth goal! Buddy is on fire! ”Mark listened carefully. He was lost in the magic of
Australian football brought to life by his friend.

Encouraging people to exercise outdoors could help to prevent several conditions including depression and

£100m, researchers from the University of Exeter said.
NCDs are a group of conditions that cannot be spread between people and result in long-term health problems.
The most common — including heart and lung disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes — cause 74 percent of global
deaths and are on the rise, according to the World Health Organisation.
The Exeter study focused on places such as beaches and coasts, countryside and open spaces in towns and
cities, such as parks. Using data including a survey of the English population, the research team estimated(估计 )
how many cases of six NCDs — major depressive disorder (MDD), type 2 diabetes, ischaemic(局部的 ) heart
disease, ischaemic stroke, colon cancer, and breast cancer — are prevented through nature-based recreational
exercise.
In 2019, 22 million adults in England aged 16 years or older visited natural environments at least once a week.
Using reported exercise levels, the researchers estimated that this prevented 12,763 cases of NCDs — the vast
majority being MDD — creating annual healthcare savings of £108.7m.
Although it has been reported that exercising specifically in natural environments is more helpful for a lot of
emotional outcomes compared with urban environments, this is the first such survey conducted on a national wide,
the research team said.
“We have almost certainly underestimated the true value of nature-based physical activity in terms of disease
prevention,” Dr James Grellier from the University of Exeter Medical School, said. The team hope that their study,
published in Environment International, encourages investment in spaces such as parks to make it easier for people
to be physically active.
32. What does paragragh 2 mainly about?

第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2. 5 分,满分 12. 5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选
项。
An earthquake happens when two plates(板块) rub together. The earth plates travel in different directions and
at different speeds. 36 In other words, earthquakes are the shaking of the earth’s surface caused by the
earth’s rocky outer layer. The energy stored within is suddenly released.
The damage an earthquake causes depends on where it is and when it is happening. If a place where nobody
lives is struck, there will be low loss of life or property. 37 Many of the areas at risk are largely populated
now. Major earthquakes hitting those areas today could produce terrible damage. 38 Fortunately, however,
most of them are unnoticed to the public because of the small Richter scale’(筤级). But large earthquakes such as the
1964 Alaskan quake that measured 9.2 on the Richter scale, can cause millions of dollars in damage.
39 In 1972, a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua. Fifteen years later, the city
still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the city was in such a mess that it didn’t have the
money necessary to rebuild it.
The shaking of the earth is sometimes not the greatest disaster. 40 In the 1906 earthquake, it was
the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage. An earthquake can also destroy dams high above a city
or valleys, causing floods to sweep away everything in their path.

B
If your “why” is strong enough and you truly believe in the benefits, the sacrifices (牺牲) that come alongside studying part-time become much easier.
【答案】24. C 25. D 26. B 27. B
【语篇解读】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章主要讲述了作者在职场发展过程中认识到终身学习的重要性,通过攻读MBA的经历,她最终意识到了持续教育对个人成长的巨大价值。
24. 细节理解题。根据第二段中“When I decided to do an MBA in 2021, the big questions for me were: Where, and when? Dublin City University (DCU) stood out as I had benefited from what the university offered while studying for my degree in multimedia back in 2005. (2021年当我决定攻读MBA时,面临的首要问题是:去哪里读?什么时候读?都柏林城市大学(DCU)成为我的首选,因为早在2005年攻读多媒体学位时,我就曾受益于这所大学提供的优质教育资源)”可知,作者选择DCU是因为她过去在该校有良好的学习经历。故选C项。

Mark and Bert are good friends for most of their lives. A few years ago, when Mark was nine, he developed a serious disease(疾病).

A. It attracts people with MDD. B. It increases the cases of NCDs.
C. It has little effect on those under 16. D. It’s very helpful for mental health.
34. What should be built more according to the researchers?
A. Parks. B. Gyms. C. Hospitals. D. Apartments.

【答案】36. G 37. E 38. B 39. F 40. A

If it hits a large city, there may be many injuries and much destruction.(如果它袭击一个大城市,可能会造成很多伤害和破坏。)说明了地震发生地点如果是大城市,损失就会很大,与上句一起解释说明了第一句表明的地震造成的破坏取决于地震发生的地点。故选E。
38. 根据下句“Fortunately, however, most of them are unnoticed to the public because of the small Richter scale’(筤级).(然而,幸运的是,由于里氏震级较小,大多数小地震都没有引起公众的注意。)”,选项B. In fact, there are millions of small earthquakes every year.(事实上,每年都有数百万次小地震。)中的“small earthquakes”与下句中的“them”所指一致,下句进一步说明了选项B提到的每年数百万次的小地震中,因为震级小,所以大多数都没有引起公众注意,语意衔接合理,符合语境。故选B。
39. 根据第三段“In 1972, a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua. Fifteen years later, the city still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the city was in such a mess that it didn’t have the money necessary to rebuild it.(1972年,尼加拉瓜的马那瓜发生了一系列强烈地震。15年后,这座城市仍然是地震发生后一周的样子,因为这座城市一团糟,没有必要的资金来重建它。)”可知,该段用具体的例子表明了地震的破坏性会持续很久;选项F. The destructive damage of an earthquake can last for years after the first shake.(地震的毁灭性的破坏可以在第一次震动后持续数年。)表达了这层含义,概括了该段主题。故选F。
40. 根据上句“The shaking of the earth is sometimes not the greatest disaster.(地震有时并不是最大的灾难。)”,选项A. The greatest damage often occurs in the fires and floods.(最大的损失往往发生在火灾和洪水中。)中的“The greatest damage”与上句的“the greatest disaster”相对应,进一步说明了最大的灾难往往发生在火灾和洪水中;下句“In the 1906 earthquake, it was the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage.(在1906年的地震中,造成最大损失的是地震后引发的大火。)”用具体的例子证明了选项A表达的含义。故选A。
