Teens often find themselves in difficult situations with friends and others where they struggle to communicate their needs or their values. Even when their gut (直觉) is telling them that someone is crossing a line with them, they may struggle to express that the situation is making them uncomfortable. For this reason, parents need to work with their teens to set boundaries (界限) with others.
Although boundaries are different for everyone, when done correctly, they help teens set limits with others in order to protect themselves. Setting boundaries allows teens to communicate with other people about what is OK and what is not OK with them and is necessary for teen friendships and other relationships. Learning how to set boundaries — both physical and emotional— is an important part of growing up. It’s also essential to develop friendships and other relationships that are respectful, supportive, and healthy.
Unfortunately, though, many teens have trouble setting boundaries with their friends; and when this happens, it puts them at risk for everything from unhealthy friendships to bullying and abuse. Of course, setting boundaries isn’t easy. It’s uncomfortable and it forces a teen to stand up for themselves and draw some lines in the sand. What's more, communicating boundaries to other people can make for difficult conversations or uncomfortable situations.
Yet, it’s one of the most important things teens need to learn how to do. Not only will setting boundaries with other people help keep your teen safe, but it also can help protect their mental health.
If your teen has people in their lives such as fake friends, a controlling partner, or an adult that makes them feel uncomfortable, disrespected, or unworthy, they need to consider setting boundaries with those people. Allowing people to treat them in unhealthy ways not only leads to unhealthy relationships, but it also can influence your teen mentally and emotionally.
8. What’s the main purpose of teens setting boundaries?
A. To respect others. B. To communicate more easily.
C. To prevent them from being hurt. D. To make more friends.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The necessity of setting boundaries. B. The differences of boundaries.
C. The ways of setting boundaries. D. The difficulties of setting boundaries.
10. When should teens consider setting boundaries according to the text?
A. When they communicate their values with parents. B. When a friend lies to them over and over again.
C. When they are treated like strangers at a party. D. When their friends try to have a long conversation.
11. Who is the text mainly written for?
A Teenagers. B. Trouble-makers. C. Teachers. D. Parents.

The 2024 Olympic Games open in Paris late this month and experts expect this summer to be much hotter than the previous years. With such weather, the Olympic athletes will have to pay more attention to their body temperatures as they train, recover and compete. And the buildings where they will stay during the event will not be equipped with air conditioning.
“The rising temperature has lots of effects on performance,” said Craig Heller of Stanford University, an expert in body temperature regulation.
Stanford University is well known for Olympic Athletes. Stanford-connected athletes won 26 Olympic medals in the 2020 games in Tokyo and 27 in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. As a result, Heller has had the chance to study body temperature regulation. And the school’s closeness to Silicon Valley helped the tech industry enter the playing field.
Heller invented CoolMitt, a device worn like a glove on the hand. It is designed to be used during suspensions in games, in between sets and reps in the gym, or any short break in training or competition.
Once inside the glove, the palm rests on a special pad set to 10 to 12 degrees Celsius. The pad draws the heat out while cooling the athlete’s blood. The cooled blood is sent back to the heart and to the athlete’s muscles. “Taking heat out of the core of the body prevents heat from building up in the active muscles, so that they keep on working,” Heller said. “So by preventing body temperature rising to a dangerous level, CoolMitt enables you to have a higher work volume. The higher work volume you have, the bigger conditioning effect you get.”
Tyler Friedrich of Stanford University works with athletes there. “If we are overheating, we will not be performing at the level that we want or that we should be. So regulating heat and regulating core temperature in some instances can be essential to performance,” he said. The CoolMitt has made a difference. “The athletes notice themselves feeling like at the end of the game they have as much juice or jump in their legs as they did at the beginning,” Friedrich added.
12. What problem may the athletes face during the Paris Olympic Games according to the text?
A. Shabby buildings. B. Poor training conditions.
C. Rising temperature. D. Insufficient equipment.
13. What is the purpose of Heller’s invention?
A. To regulate the body temperature of athletes.
B. To promote the technology of Silicon Valley.
C. To reduce the temperature of the playing field.
D. To shorten the breaks in training or competition.
14. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. When the device is used. B. How the device works.
C. How the device is designed. D. Why the device is invented.
15. What does Tyler Friedrich think of CoolMitt?
A. It is of little practical value.
B. Its effect remains to be seen.
C. It has proved to be significant and effective.
D. It has a long way to go before it is put into use.

As temperatures fall rapidly, drivers are getting ready to spend more time in the morning scraping away (刮除) frost, ice and possibly snow from their cars. Scraping the windscreen in the icy cold is not an enjoyable job. ___16___.
●Spray vinegar (喷醋)
A solution of mixed water and vinegar sprayed on the car the night before can help stop the appearance of frost. Vinegar is typically used as a deicer as its freezing point is much lower than that of water. ___17___.
●Use a bed sheet
If drivers have no choice but to park outside overnight, they could make use of an old or spare bed sheet to help them. ___18___. And use the wipers to hold it in place overnight. This is an effective and cheap way to shield it from the ice.
●Rub(擦) an onion on the windscreen
___19___. If drivers don’t have an onion in their cupboard, they can then try potato instead. The sugar molecules from these vegetables can work to break down frost as soon as it forms on the window. Cut an onion or potato in half and then rub it generously all over the windows and windscreen the night before and this should drive the frost away.
●___20___
As the sun rises in the east, it can melt away the ice on the windscreen in the early morning, so the driver has a few extra minutes in bed. However, it will depend on how much sunlight the car gets and how early they leave the house.
A. Park your car facing east
B. Fill a bag with warm vinegar
C. Onions have a similar effect to vinegar
D. Put a bed sheet or large piece of cardboard over the windscreen
E. So experts have suggested some tips to defrost the car windscreen
F. People should never pour boiling hot water onto their windscreen
G. So the water doesn’t have the chance to settle and freeze on top of the vinegar

Catherine had stayed at home all her life to look after her three children, but now, she, who lost her husband in a car accident, had to step out and earn money to make ends meet. With zero work experience and no professional degree, her chances of getting hired for a well-paid job were next to zero.
One day, after dropping her children at school, Catherine spotted a construction site (工地). “I think I can work here,” she thought and walked close to the manager.
“Hi, are you hiring (雇佣)? ” she asked. “Yes, we are,” the manager looked at Catherine from head to toe.“Are you sure you can work here? This job requires a lot of hard work.” “I’m ready for it,” she told the manager and signed a contract (合同) to work a 12-hour shift (轮班). However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site.
Every morning, after dropping her children to school, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks (砖块) on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One evening, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming competition in school that required mothers to join. In the competition, students would wear blindfolds (眼罩) and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said excitedly. “I can’t wait for it!” “I won’t go there with you, mom,” Peter replied. “But why?” What her son said next was something Catherine wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Mom, I would have to touch your hands to recognize you, and everyone would look at them,” Peter explained. “Your hands are so ugly. They’re so hard and rough,” he added. “I will feel so embarrassed when my classmates look at your hands,” the boy said. “I won’t attend the event.” Catherine felt terrible but couldn’t say anything in her defense.

25% of my classmates hold the view that doing part-time jobs will help one gain work experience and learn more of society. Besides, when students find it hard to make money, they will know it is not easy for parents to earn money and won’t waste their money any longer.
15% of the students, including myself, partly agree with the opinions above. Personally I think that as grown-ups, we should not depend on our parents any more. However, if our parents can afford to pay the tuition for us, we should put our studies in the first place.
Thank you for reading my letter
Yours,
Li Hua

A few weeks later, Peter was walking home when something unexpected caught his attention. In the distance, he saw a familiar figure in worn-out clothes, covered in dust and sweat, lifted heavy bricks with her weathered hands at the construction site. As he drew closer, he realized it was his mother, Catherine. Catherine tirelessly moved heavy bricks with her ugly and rough hands under the scorching sun. Her face was covered in sweat, and she didn't even have time to wipe it off as she rushed back and forth, working tirelessly. Peter stood there in shock, unable to utter a single word. Meanwhile, a wave of guilt and regret flooded over him. He shouldn’t have said those hurtful words.
On his way back home, he kept thinking about how he would apologize to his mother. Peter couldn't shake off the guilt and regret for his hurtful words towards his mother. He knew he had to make things right and apologize to her. The moment Catherine stepped into the house from work, Peter rushed up to her, gently took her hands in his and held them tightly. “Mom, I’m sorry” he murmured, tears welling up in his eyes, “I didn’t understand then, but now I see how hard you work for us. Your hands may be rough, but they are the most beautiful hands in the world because they care for us.” Tears welled up in Catherine’s eyes as she embraced her son, a wave of happiness washing over her. From that day on, Peter not only attended the school event with his mother but also stood by her side, holding her hands with pride.
