A
The record for the loudest scream
This “talent” of the loudest scream, may be useful. For six years, the reigning (当时的) Scream Queen was Annalisa Flanagan, a teacher in Northern Ireland, who set the Guinness World Record in 1994 by shouting “quiet” at 121.7 decibels 2, louder than a jet engine. However, her record was eventually broken by Jill Drake, a British teacher, who shouted at 129 decibels in 2000.
The record for eating an entire plane
Frenchman Michel Lotito earned his nickname, Mr. Eat-All. Even when he was a teenager, he had a talent and desire for eating indigestible (不可消化的) things such as bicycles, televisions, and shopping carts by having them cut into tiny bits; he would eat a little at a time. But his dumbest achievement was eating an entire plane, piece by piece.
The record for typing out the numbers from one to one million
Les Stewart has two talents: the ability to count and an incredible amount of patience. Stewart typed out the numbers from one to one million. That’s right; he typed “one; two; three; four; five; six; seven; eight; nine.” until he reached “nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine; one million”.
The record for having the most world records
Ashrita Furman gained the king of all fun records: In fact, he is in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most world records! These include doing 27,000 jumping jacks, running the fastest mile with a baseball bat balanced on his hand, and jumping on the world’s smallest pogo stick. In total, he has set more than 500 records.
21. What can we know from the passage?
A. Les Stewart was possessed of counting ability and patience.
B. Ashrita Furman is holding the most records of the stupidest ones.
C. Michel Lotito was nicknamed for his eating a whole plane at a time.
D. Jill Drake wasn’t the world record holder of the loudest scream.
22. What do the four pieces have in common?
A. All people mentioned broke the world record.
B. All people set world records for unusual abilities.
C. All people were famous for their most silly records.
D. All people were listed in the Guinness Book of World Record.
23. Where is probably the passage taken from?
A. A guidebook. B. A magazine. C. A research report. D. A book review.
B
My mind still holds the image of the day I first walked into the untouched valley. The air was filled with the gentle whispers of the ancient trees, and the river’s song was more ancient than any human words. As my boots sank into the moss (苔藓), I felt the forest breathing beneath me — a living, pulsing lives that had been there long before my birth and would continue to do so long after my bones turned to dust.
Modern civilization teaches us to conquer (征服) nature. We dam rivers, clear-cut forests, and force the land to bend to our will. Yet in this hidden valley, I understood the arrogance (傲慢) of this attitude. The towering trees stood as patient witnesses to countless human sillies; the rocks held secrets of centuries in their silent embrace (怀抱).
Scientists warn we’ve entered modern civilization — a time defined by human rule. But here, nature still ruled everything. When fog rolled in, all technology became useless. When winter came, even the most advanced equipment couldn’t match the adaptations of the snowshoe hare (雪鞋兔) or the evergreen’s waxy needles (蜡质针叶).
As I left the valley, a single raven (乌鸦) followed me to the tree line. Its knowing eyes seemed to ask: “When your concrete jungles collapse, who will remain — your kind or mine?” The question confuses me still, in the glow of my office, where the wild exists only as screensavers and corporate logos. True wilderness isn’t just a place — it’s the mirror that shows us our place in the grand scheme of life.
24. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Nature never gives way to the human. B. Scientists should study primary forests.
C. Nature takes delight in conquering humans. D. Humans should keep on fighting for needs.
25. What does the underlined sentence mean in the third paragraph?
A. Fog affects the survival of wildlife. B. Nature still takes over in some aspects.
C The author dislikes using modern devices. D. Human technology fails in extreme weather conditions.
26. What does the “knowing eyes” symbolize (象征) in the fourth paragraph?
A. The great curiosity about humans. B. The mysterious power of animals.
C. The great authority over wilderness. D. The wisdom and permanence of nature.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. City life is more meaningful than wilderness.
B. Modern technology enables humans to conquer nature.
C. The scientists’ warnings about the civilization are incorrect.
D. We should rethink the relationship with nature and keep modest.

From an airplane, cars crawling down the highway look like ants. But actual ants — unlike cars — somehow manage to avoid the disaster of stop-and-go traffic. Researchers are now studying these insects’ cooperative methods to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up.
The free flow of traffic becomes unstable as the density (密集度) of cars increases on a highway. At 15 vehicles per mile per lane, one driver tapping their brakes can cause a constant wave of jam.
Katsuhiro Nishinari studies jamming transitions. His previous research had shown that foraging (觅食) ants can maintain their flow even at high densities. So what’s their secret? In a recent study published in Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives, researchers recorded Ochetellus ants on foraging trails and used traffic-engineering models to analyze their movement. They found that the ants don’t jam because they travel in groups of 3 to 20 that move at nearly constant rates while keeping good distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others.
Human drivers at rush hour hardly tend to follow such rules. “We’re maximizing the interests of individuals, which is why, at a given point, you start to have a traffic jam,” says study co-author Nicola Pugno, who studies sustainable (可持续的) engineering at the University of Trento in Italy. But self-driving cars, if they one day become ubiquitous, could have more cooperative programming. In one vision of this future, autonomous vehicles would share information with nearby cars to optimize (优化) traffic flow — perhaps, the researchers suggest, by prioritizing (优先考虑) constant speeds and headways or by not passing others on the road.
This vehicle network would be similar to ants on a trail, which use smell to cooperate while interacting with one another. “There is no leader,” but this organization appears anyway, says Noa Pinter Wollman, a behavioral scientist currently studying ants at the University of California, Los Angeles. And in both ant and vehicle traffic, this type of distributed system can be “very, very strong”, Nishinari says.
Still, ants can do a lot of things that cars — even self-driving ones — can’ t, Pinter Wollman points out. Ants can make trails as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck on highways. The insects do sometimes jam up when stuck in tunnels, but to keep things moving, “they’ll find a way to walk on the ceiling,” she says. Plus, unlike cars, ants don’t crash; they can actually walk over one another.
Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants to avoid causing a traffic jam, Nishinari says: don’t tailgate (追尾). By leaving room between their car and the one ahead of them, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense (密集的) traffic conditions. “Just keeping away,” he says, can help traffic flow smoothly.
28. According to the research, how do ants avoid traffic jam when foraging?
A. They brake to adjust on a regular basis.
B. They rely entirely on leaders to command.
C. They tend to speed up to overtake other ants.
D. They maintain a steady speed and distance in groups.
29. Which of the following is probably the meaning of “ubiquitous” in the fourth paragraph?
A. Expensive. B. Rare. C. Popular. D. Dangerous.
30. What do ants and future self-driving cars have in common?
A. They can both widen roads at will.
B. They both cause traffic jam due to braking.
C. They both rely on centralized command systems.
D. They can both optimize traffic flow through cooperation.
31. What practical advice does Nishinari give to human drivers to prevent traffic jams?
A. Driving as fast as possible to avoid slowing down.
B. Overtaking the car in front to maintain a tight formation.
C. Leaving enough space between cars to absorb braking waves.
D. Ignoring other drivers and focus solely on personal route planning.
D
A free online platform that allows speakers to practise in front of thousands of virtual audience has been released to help with the anxiety many feel when presenting to an audience. Dr Chris Macdonald, the founder of the Immersive Technology Lab at Cambridge University and who created the online platform, said the approach was an attempt to reduce the lengthy (冗长的) waits or high costs people often face when seeking help. “Most people have some form of speech anxiety but very, very few people are accessing the treatment. So what I was trying to do with this project is fix those barriers,” he said.
The Virtual Reality Public Speaking platform employs exposure therapy (曝光疗法) — the idea that facing fears can help reduce them —combined with breathing exercises and eye movements that help slow the heart rate and stop the fear response. People using the technology can practise speaking in various virtual reality (VR)settings, from an empty classroom or small audiences of photorealistic (照片写实主义的) figures that yawn and scratch, to a stadium of 10,000 spectators, with the option to add distractions (分心的事物) such as flashing cameras and loud noises. Macdonald said the latter was an example of “overexposure therapy”.
“The idea behind it is that this will give them extra resilience (耐力) and adaptability — you can think of it like the psychological equivalent of training with weights or running with weights or at high altitudes,” he said, adding that the hope was that afterwards presenting to a smaller real life audience would feel like a “step down” by comparison. Macdonald said the platform — which combines learning materials, feedback mechanisms and scenarios (情景) such as job interviews — works on both Android and iOS operating systems and can be accessed through a laptop or VR headset or via a smartphone that can be inserted (嵌入) into a cheap mount.
A recent study published by Macdonald in the journal Frontiers in Virtual Reality suggests the platform could be beneficial. Dr Matte o Cella, a psychologist and leader of the virtual reality lab at King’s College London, who was not involved in the work, said the platform built on the concepts of traditional exposure therapy, making it more accessible and easy to carry out.
But Cella said there was a potential risk overexposure could strengthen people’s avoidance of public speaking, and that randomised (随机的) control trials were needed to evaluate the system, noting the published work did not offer many insights on its effect.
32. What’s the purpose of the online platform?
A. To cut short people’s long waits.
B. To handle problems in people’s daily life.
C. To help people catch up with VR technology.
D. To help people solve public speaking anxiety.
33. What aspect is mentioned about the platform in the second paragraph?
A. Working principle. B. Practical applications.
C. Background information. D. Operating instructions.
34. What’s Cella’s attitude towards the platform?
A. Appreciative. B. Indifferent. C. Objective. D. Negative.
35. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. The VR online platform:a secret to enjoying your life.
B. The benefits of a VR online platform are in store for you.
C. The founder of a VR online platform rids you of your stress.
D. The VR online platform:a relief from public speaking anxiety.
You are looking at a website and an advertisement jumps out, asking for donations to people in need of warm clothes. You pay for a few items at a drugstore and the clerk asks if you’d like to donate school supplies to less fortunate children. Opportunities to give money to those in need are everywhere. ____36____ Does it depend on your mood? Or does it depend on who’s watching?
According to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research, a major factor that may determine whether we donate is where we stand on two moral qualities:empathy (共情) and a sense of justice. They often appear to pull us in two different directions. ____37____
For example, you believe that a homeless man has caused his own misfortune and he could have made better choices. ____38____ On the other hand, if you can understand the pain causing him to slip into the hopeless situation, you would tend to give.
For the study researchers asked people to donate to charities. In the charities the donors believed the sufferers were responsible for their own situation (such as those who cannot keep a job due to alcohol use). ____39____ Furthermore, if the participants felt that they almost always make moral choices, they seemed to feel less empathic towards the sufferers and were less likely to donate money.
____40____ It’s empathy that connects us and encourages us to reach out. In fact, any type of suffering can help us relate to another person’s suffering, prompting (促进) us to reach out and help. Actually, when asked to recall their own past immoral behaviours, the participants seemed able to empathize more with those sufferers. As a result, they were more likely to donate.
A. Then you will probably not give any money.
B. This suggests that creativity can increase generosity.
C. But which situations drive you to reach for your wallet?
D So trying to keep a balance between them can be difficult.
E. Empathy is considered a great power among several factors.
F. So next time, think about whether empathy is guiding your decision.
G. And some participants considered it immoral to donate to such persons.

Flowers for You
Flowers should be presented to winners. Why should they be given to this loser? Since she failed four days ago at the International Gymnastics Championships, Lily felt ashamed. Now she was back at the Capital Airport from abroad. Upon entering the airport, Lily wished she could hide her head under her collar. She was afraid to face the people who had come to welcome her right at the airport.
Two years before, Lily took part in an international competition for the first time, and unexpectedly she won two world titles. When Lily returned home that year, she was given a warm welcome in the same place. Many fans and reporters applauded her for the wonderful performance. And some stewardesses(女乘务员) would surround her, greeting warmly and presenting beautiful flowers. Of them, a quiet stewardesses named June always hugged her with a sincere smile, and said to her “You are beautiful”. Lily would smile brightly back at June, thinking of her as a special girl.
During the past two years, Lily had taken part in many international competitions and brought back many shining medals. She got smiles, flowers and cheers. She felt proud.
But the more she won, the more fear Lily had of losing. So her mind was, in fact, more burdened with success.
In order to avoid people at the airport, Lily hid herself among the crowd with a hat. Walking past a group of tourists holding cherry blossom flags, she saw reporters gathering near the luggage area. Their cameras followed a smiling badminton star as kids handed him sunflowers.

A
The record for the loudest scream
A All people mentioned broke the world record.
B. All people set world records for unusual abilities.
C. All people were famous for their most silly records.
D. All people were listed in the Guinness Book of World Record.
23. Where is probably the passage taken from?
A. A guidebook. B. A magazine. C. A research report. D. A book review.

24 What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
C. The author dislikes using modern devices.
A 25. B 26. D 27. D
根据第二段“Modern civilization teaches us to conquer (征服) nature. We dam rivers, clear-cut forests, and force the land to bend to our will. Yet in this hidden valley, I understood the arrogance (傲慢) of this attitude. The towering trees stood as patient witnesses to countless human sillies; the rocks held secrets of centuries in their silent embrace (怀抱).(现代文明教导我们要征服自然。我们筑坝拦河,砍伐森林,迫使土地屈从于我们的意志。然而在这片隐秘的山谷中,我明白了这种态度的傲慢之处。那些高耸的树木像耐心的见证者一样,见证了无数人的愚蠢行为;那些岩石则在无声的拥抱中蕴藏着数百年来的秘密)”可知,第二段的主要观点是自然永远不会屈服于人类。故选A。
根据划线部分后文“When winter came, even the most advanced equipment couldn’t match the adaptations of the snowshoe hare (雪鞋兔) or the evergreen’s waxy needles (蜡质针叶).(当浓雾袭来时,所有的技术都变得毫无用处。当冬天来临之际,即便是最先进的设备也无法与雪鞋兔的适应能力或常绿植物的蜡质针叶相匹敌)”可知,后文提到浓雾中技术变得无用,冬天最先进的设备无法发挥作用可知自然在某些方面仍然起着主导作用。故划线句意思是“自然在某些方面仍然起着主导作用”。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“But here, nature still ruled everything. When fog rolled in, all technology became useless. When winter came, even the most advanced equipment couldn’t match the adaptations of the snowshoe hare (雪鞋兔) or the evergreen’s waxy needles (蜡质针叶).(但在这里,大自然仍然主宰着一切。当大雾袭来时,所有的技术都变得无用了。当冬天来临时,即使是最先进的设备也无法与雪鞋兔或常绿树的蜡针相比)”以及第四段“Its knowing eyes seemed to ask: “When your concrete jungles collapse, who will remain — your kind or mine?” The question confuses me still, in the glow of my office, where the wild exists only as screensavers and corporate logos. True wilderness isn’t just a place — it’s the mirror that shows us our place in the grand scheme of life.(它那洞悉一切的眼睛仿佛在问:“当你们的混凝土丛林崩塌之时,留存下来的会是你们人类,还是我们?” 在我办公室的灯光下,这个问题仍困扰着我。在这里,荒野仅以屏保画面和企业标志的形式存在。真正的荒野不仅仅是一个地方,它就像一面镜子,让我们看清自己在生命宏大格局中的位置。)”可知,“洞悉一切的眼睛”象征着自然的智慧与永恒。故选D。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“As my boots sank into the moss (苔藓), I felt the forest breathing beneath me — a living, pulsing lives that had been there long before my birth and would continue to do so long after my bones turned to dust.(当我靴子陷入苔藓之中时,我感觉到森林就在脚下轻轻呼吸着——那是一片充满生机、不断跳动的生命之域,它在我出生之前就已存在,也会在我肉体化为尘土之后继续存在下去)”以及作者初入未被人类触碰的山谷,感受到自然的生机,反思现代文明对自然的征服态度,领悟到自然的统治力及人类应有的位置。
C
D 29. C 30. D 31. C
根据第三段“They found that the ants don’t jam because they travel in groups of 3 to 20 that move at nearly constant rates while keeping good distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others.

根据第四段关键句“In one vision of this future, autonomous vehicles would share information with nearby cars to optimize (优化) traffic flow — perhaps, the researchers suggest, by prioritizing (优先考虑) constant speeds and headways or by not passing others on the road. (在这个未来的一个愿景中,自动驾驶汽车将与附近的汽车共享信息,以优化交通流——研究人员建议,也许可以通过优先考虑恒定的速度和车头时距,或者不在路上超车。)”和第五段关键句“This vehicle network would be similar to ants on a trail, which use smell to cooperate while interacting with one another. (这种车辆网络类似于小径上的蚂蚁,它们在相互互动的同时利用气味进行合作。)”可知,未来的自动驾驶汽车可以通过合作优化交通流,这类似于小径上的蚂蚁,由此可知,蚂蚁和未来的自动驾驶汽车的共同点是他们可以通过合作优化交通流。故选D项。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants to avoid causing a traffic jam, Nishinari says: don’t tailgate (追尾). By leaving room between their car and the one ahead of them, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense (密集的) traffic conditions.

For the study, researchers asked people to donate to charities.
D. So trying to keep a balance between them can be difficult.

Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Tobby,
How are you? AI like Deepseek is changing our world. For example, doctors use it to find diseases faster, and teachers use it to make classes more fun. But some problems worry people. If AI does many jobs, workers might lose their work. Also, someone could steal our private data online. I think we should use AI carefully. Governments need clear rules, and schools should teach students about AI. If we balance new ideas with safety, our future can be brighter. What do you think?
Please write back soon!

When no one noticed her, Lily felt even more ashamed. She pulled her hat down, feeling some tears welling up in her eyes. The cheers for the badminton star pierced her ears like needles. She glanced down at her empty hands — no medals, no glory, just the bitter taste of defeat. She felt frustrated as if she was forgotten in a distant corner while others shone brightly. Lily was about to flee, when a soft voice “Lily” stopped her. Lily raised her head. The stewardess June stood before her with a warm smile on her face.
June handed Lily a bunch of flowers and hugged her gently. Lily froze, her hands trembling as the delicate flowers brushed her cheeks. Through unclear vision, she was touched by the familiar sincere smile that had once greeted her victories. “Why...?” she whispered weakly, holding the flowers like fragile hope. “You’ve always been beautiful,” June said softly, “not because of medals, but because you rise when you fall.” Lily felt a sense of warmth rising in her heart. And the flowers’ strong fragrance seemed to turn into a powerful force that went through her body. And immediately, she understood true beauty grew not from unbroken triumphs, but from the courage to rise and persist.
