It seems like everything has been reinvented and greatly improved. However, there is one thing that is different. It was invented over 100 years ago but remained (保持) unchanged until now. It is the white cane (盲杖) used by blind people. Many blind people have used this kind of white cane for a long time. However, it has seen no real improvement, until a blind engineer named Kursat decided to make a difference. Kursat is from Turkey(土耳其). He lost his eyesight at the age of 2. He well understands the difficulties and challenges that the blind face. That’s because he himself is a blind person. As a blind person, when he is at the subway station, he doesn’t know which is his exit (出口). When walking on the street, he may run into obstacles. Kursat decided to do something to help the blind. He invented a new kind of cane called the WeWalk. This smart cane is equipped (配备) with built — in speakers and different sensors (传感器). The sensors can “see” obstacles in front of it, like a wall or a car, and then the cane will vibrate (震动) to tell the user. It can also connect to the Internet through Bluetooth. It can give the user information about the place he or she is visiting, such as the name of the store or the direction of the library. Besides, the cane can be folded, so it’s easy to carry. What’s more, the price of the WeWalk is around $500, which is relatively cheap compared with other high-tech products for the blind. This invention will bring great changes to the lives of blind people. In these days, we are talking about flying cars. But blind people are still using just a simple cane. In 1993, he happened to watch Beijing Opera performed in London by professionals from Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing. Ghaffar said he fell in love with the beautiful voices, colorful costumes (服饰), excellent shows and so on. So after one year, he arrived in China alone and became a student of Beijing Opera at a Beijing school. At the age of 32, he had to learn with teenage students every day, starting from the most basic training of the legs and waist (腰部). At the time, he was mostly troubled by the dialogue in Beijing Opera. To him, it was the biggest obstacle. But he never gave up. Four years later, he began to learn to perform the Monkey King, a traditional character from the Chinese classic story Journey to the West. Maybe not. New research into the reasons for shark attacks (攻击) suggests that sharks don’t like the way humans taste! In fact, most people who are attacked by the shark are still alive after receiving only one bite (咬). Why is this? There are many opinions to explain why sharks sometimes attack people. One opinion is that sharks are just curious (好奇的). We know that sharks are the strongest animals in their environment, so they are not afraid of anything. Naturally, that means they are curious when they meet something unusual. Because they don’t have hands or feet, the only way they can find out an object is to bite it! It is thought that sharks sometimes bite humans for this reason, and then swim away. Scientists also say that sharks would not waste energy trying to eat a human, as we have a lot of bones (骨头). It is hard for a shark to eat us because sharks don’t have hands, and they can’t pull the meat off our bones. Maybe that’s why they only bite us once. Unluckily, one bite from a large shark is serious enough to hurt people greatly! Another opinion is that sharks attack humans by mistake. Some sharks may sometimes mistake humans for a seal. An example of this is when a shark attacks a surfer. A surfer lying on a surfboard looks like a seal when seen from below. Sharks like seals (海豹) because they have thick fat. Whatever the reason for shark attacks on humans, sharks should be afraid of us. Sadly, we kill almost 40 million of them each year. 36.What happens to people attacked by sharks? A.Most of them died. B.Most of them are still alive. C.Most of them become blind. D.Most of them become deaf. 37.How do sharks find out about an unusual object according to the passage? A.By biting. B.By smelling. C.By touching. D.By killing. 38.What can we know about sharks according to the passage? A.Sharks might mistake humans for seals. B.One bite from a shark is nothing serious. C.Sharks pull meat off bones when they eat. D.Sharks like to attack surfers because of their thick fat. 39.What is the writer’s purpose (目的) for writing the passage? A.To ask people to stop killing sharks. B.To tell surfers to stay away from sharks. C.To show that humans are much stronger than sharks. D.To let us know the reasons for shark attacks on people. 40.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? A. B. C. Hold on to whatever surface or platform you’ve gotten under and wait for the shaking to stop. If you are unable to find a surface to hide under, continue to keep your head protected by your arms. It can also connect 试题 第 5页(共 14页) 试题 第 6页(共 14页) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 to the Internet through Bluetooth. With the WeWalk, blind people can live a more convenient life. It’s really a great invention that shows how technology can help improve people’s lives. 26.What does the word obstacles in the Paragraph 2 mean? Ghaffar Pourazar, born in Iran, said he has been a big fan of Bruce Lee since he was a child and is full of interest about China. In 1993, he happened to watch Beijing Opera performed in London by professionals from Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing. Ghaffar said he fell in love with the beautiful voices, colorful costumes (服 饰), excellent shows and so on. He said he arrived in the workroom an hour earlier than others and also bought books and CDs to better understand the character. Ghaffar today is not only good at speaking Beijing dialect (方言 ) but has also built a fame (名声 ) for Beijing Opera. He once got a top international prize for performing the Monkey King. To help more people enjoy Beijing Opera, Ghaffar often teaches the traditional art form in schools in the United States, Britain and other countries. Scientists also say that sharks would not waste energy trying to eat a human, as we have a lot of bones (骨 头). Hold on to whatever surface or platform you’ve gotten under and wait for the shaking to stop. If you are unable to find a surface to hide under, continue to keep your head protected by your arms. With the WeWalk, blind people can live a more convenient life. It’s really a great invention that shows how technology can help improve people’s lives. 26.What does the word obstacles in the Paragraph 2 mean? A.机会 B.宠物 C.障碍物 D.朋友 27.What can the WeWalk do according to the passage? ① It can "see" obstacles and vibrate to tell the user. ② It can connect to the Internet through Bluetooth. ③ It can give the user information about the place. ④ It can help the blind take a plane. A.①②③④ B.①②③ C.②③④ D.①③④ 28.Why did Kursat invent the WeWalk? A.Because he wanted to make money. B.Because he wanted to be famous. C.Because he wanted to help the blind like him. D.Because he liked inventing things. 29.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.The WeWalk is very expensive. B.The WeWalk can’t be folded. C.Kursat lost his eyesight when he was born. D.The WeWalk is a great invention for the blind. 30.Which part of the newspaper can we probably read the passage in? A.Health. B.Science. C.Business. A total of 126 people were killed and 188 others got injured. How terrible! If you’re indoors during an earthquake, here are some ways to protect yourself. Drop to the floor. Earthquakes always happen without much warning, so it’s recommended that you drop to the floor as soon as an earthquake hits. Take cover. Get under a strong table or desk. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch (蹲) in an inside corner of the building. Hold on. The ground may be shaking and objects could be falling. Hold on to whatever surface or platform you’ve gotten under and wait for the shaking to stop. If you are unable to find a surface to hide under, continue to keep your head protected by your arms. A.Health. B.Science. C.Business. D.Travel. C A British man has learned the skills needed to perform Beijing Opera, making the audience enjoy his lively performance of the Monkey King. Ghaffar Pourazar, born in Iran, said he has been a big fan of Bruce Lee since he was a child and is full of interest about China. In 1993, he happened to watch Beijing Opera performed in London by professionals from Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing. He said he arrived in the workroom an hour earlier than others and also bought books and CDs to better understand the character. Ghaffar today is not only good at speaking Beijing dialect (方言) but has also built a fame (名声) for Beijing Opera. He once got a top international prize for performing the Monkey King. To help more people enjoy Beijing Opera, Ghaffar often teaches the traditional art form in schools in the United States, Britain and other countries. When he found that the language was difficult to understand, he started to translate Beijing Opera song lyrics. Ghaffar led a group of actors to perform 66 times in a month and a half in the United States. He also led a 48-member team to perform in Malaysia. In the past 10years, he has performed in more than 400 shows. 31.When did Ghaffar begin to learn Beijing Opera in Beijing? A.In 1993. B.In 1994. C.In 1997. D.In 1998. 32.What does the underlined word “obstacle” in Paragraph 3 mean? A.Chance. B.Problem. C.Topic. D.Dream. 33.Which of the following can be inferred (推断) from the passage? A.Ghaffar is successful in performing Beijing Opera. B.Ghaffar has written some books about Beijing Opera. C.Ghaffar got a prize for translating Journey to the West. D.Ghaffar doesn’t need any more members in his team. 34.What does the underlined word “others” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A.Other students. B.Other actors. C.Other teachers. D.Other monkeys. 35.What’s the theme (主题) of the passage? A.Sport. B.Travel. C.Culture. D.Education. D Should we be afraid of sharks?
