Dan was cooking when dark clouds suddenly appeared. Just as we started eating, it began to rain heavily. We quickly rushed to move the food and the gifts into the house. Though we get wet, everyone laughed while drying and then continued to enjoy the meal together. Grandma even said the unexpected experience made her birthday unforgettable. To cheer us up, mom organized a board game. Surprisingly, grandpa won the first prize in chess. We were all very glad to see our grandparents healthy and happy. This party taught me that family happiness isn’t about wealth or success but being together. How I wish happiness in my family could last forever!

Plants aren’t just nice to look at. They can also do good to your health, especially when they are indoors.
Having plants inside your home means you get lots of the advantages from being outside in nature. There are many different kinds of houseplants—tiny cacti, hanging plants with long leaves and plants that can grow more than a metre tall or wide. Your interest and knowledge of nature will develop when you research and learn about different plants and the conditions they need to grow.
Plants need water, light and attention. When you care for them, you should be careful and responsible. Nixon, who runs a flower shop called Green and Grounded, says looking after a plant can help you notice small details (细节). Being responsible for houseplants can give you a feeling of purpose. Plants can make you more creative. When you see the plant growing and flowering, you’ll feel a strong sense of achievement. You will also develop patience because many plants grow slowly and may take months or even years to flower or bear fruit.
Houseplants do more than just make your room beautiful. Houseplants help you feel quieter and less worried. Studies show that nature can make people feel relaxed. Houseplants are like little air cleaners to help you sleep better, especially if you have a plant such as lavender (薰衣草) in your room. You can grow plants to eat, such as salad leaves and tomatoes. Some plants can be used as medicine. Aloe Vera (芦荟) can deal with burns, while peppermint (薄荷) helps with headaches.

Glaciers are formed in areas of high snowfall in winter and cool temperatures in summer. They can come in different shapes and sizes. Some glaciers are small and they may only be a few meters wide. Some glaciers are large, and they are over hundreds of thousands of kilometers.
About 10% of the world’s land is covered by such different sizes of glaciers. They serve as natural reservoirs (水库) because about 75% of all the fresh water in the world is kept in glaciers. That’s why glaciers are quite important.
Now some glaciers are disappearing because of global (全球的) warming. As the Earth becomes warmer, glaciers melt quickly. Scientists believe that it will lead to serious results in the near future.
There will be more earthquakes. Large glaciers stop small earthquakes because the plates can’t move much under these huge objects. In Southeast Alaska, some glaciers are gone, and the land is lifted. So the plates can move more quickly, and this leads to more earthquakes there.
Volcanoes (火山) will become “hot” again. Volcanoes are waking up because of the disappearing glaciers. Even volcanoes that weren’t lively have broken out several times in recent years. Scientists said that the glaciers have something to do with it. The volcanoes will become “hot” again after the glaciers get thin.
People, animals and plants are in danger. Coral (珊瑚) grows in salt water. The more glaciers melt, the more fresh water there will be, and it is not good for coral. People, animals and plants need fresh water from glaciers to live. They will be in danger if too much fresh water goes into the sea.
Something must be done. Many people are now living a green life which is a way of living with less carbon dioxide (CO₂). For example, they prefer to take public transportation and use both sides of the paper. These are helpful in slowing down global warming. With little effort and not much money, most of us can make a difference.
31.How does the writer start the text?
A.By listing numbers. B.By offering suggestions.
C.By asking questions. D.By giving introductions.
32.Why are glaciers very important?
A.They cover about 10% of the world’s land.
B.They hold a lot of fresh water in the world.
C.They are beautiful and loved by many tourists.
D.They provide homes for different kinds of animals.
33.What does the underlined word “plates” mean in the text?

A.A plate is a flat, usually round, dish that you put food on.

Nowadays, more and more Chinese people, especially young people, are staying up late at night. A survey shows that the bedtime for most Chinese people is 00:18 am, which is 17 minutes later than last year. About 80 percent of college students go to bed after midnight, and one in four of them falls asleep after 2:00 am. About one in three wakes up after 9:00 am.
Mobile phones are an important factor (因素) influencing studęnts’ sleep. The longer they use smartphones, the later they go to bed. They just want to have more free time. The problem is called “revenge bedtime procrastination (报复性睡前拖延)”. Many people have the problem because they have to work or study in the daytime. You can listen to some white noise, like the sound of rain. Also, go to bed and wake up regularly every day. People who often do exercise can sleep better. They have less trouble falling asleep than those who seldom exercise.

37.Which of the following is “revenge bedtime procrastination”?
A.Amy sleeps for a while during her lunch break.
B.John exercises in the evening to help sleep better.
C.Mary goes to bed early and wakes up late for her morning class.

Waiting hours to go on a theme park ride, queuing (排队) at the post office...
41 Really, we have a great deal of respect for queuing. Actually the act seems to have come from the British people.
Like it or not, queuing is necessary to keep order and stop people from getting angry at each other. But where does it come from? According to the website, Culture Trip, the origin (起源) of queuing go back to the early 19th century at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution (工业革命) in England. 42 As cities were getting bigger and more crowded, queuing naturally started to happen for everyday things like posting letters at the post office or buying things in local shops.
But the real reputation (名声) of the British being “civilized (文明的) queuers” dates back to World War II, says Culture Trip. 43 So wartime propaganda (宣传) encouraged people to “do their job and wait their turn”.
As a Briton myself, I have to say this is true of the British people. We like things to be orderly. We believe in showing politeness and waiting your turn. It’s in all manner of everyday activities. In the UK, it’s the custom to let people get off buses before you get on. 44 It’s also very important to stand on the right on an escalator (电梯) and let people walk on the left side. 45
A.It was very important to keep order during difficult times.
B.Everyone likes queuing except the British.
C.Why?
D.Nobody likes queuing except, perhaps, the British.
E.If you push to the bus or subway, you’ll get shouted at!

Dear Jack,
How is everything going? I’m replying to you to tell you about my health management. Now I will tell you what I always do to keep healthy in my life.
Firstly, it is important to keep physically healthy. So I always remind myself to eat more fruit and vegetables. Also, whenever I have time, I play sports. I go to bed early and get up early, so I always feel energetic during the day.
Secondly, I do my best to keep mentally healthy. I can manage my emotions well by myself and adjust them in time when I meet problems. I try to find things I like, such as listening to music, reading books, drawing pictures and so on. If I have problems, I will go to my parents, teachers or friends for help.
Last but not least, protecting the environment also matters. I try to reduce pollution by riding or walking instead of driving.

Though they are very tired, they often stay up late to control their time after work. For example, some people lie on the bed and watch short videos or read novels at midnight. Some people play on their phones until midnight every day.
Most people have sleeping problems now. 65 percent of them have these problems once or twice each week. The problems can be waking up during the night or too early, having trouble falling asleep, going to the bathroom at night, and snoring (打鼾).
Healthy sleeping is not just about sleeping long, but about how well you sleep. To improve sleeping quality (质量), your bedroom should be cool and dark. You can listen to some white noise, like the sound of rain. Also, go to bed and wake up regularly every day. People who often do exercise can sleep better. They have less trouble falling asleep than those who seldom exercise.
So, we should try to have enough sleep and develop good sleeping habits. This is very important for our health and learning.

A.The kinds of sleeping problems. B.What things a good sleep needs.
C.The disadvantages of sleeping late. D.How to improve sleep quality.
39.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

F.As the old British saying goes, “Keep calm and carry on”.
G.It’s important to develop a good eating habit.

【参考范文】
Dear Jack,
How is everything going?
In a word, I believe if everyone of us can do like this, we will be happier and healthier.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hui

Plants aren’t just nice to look at. They can also do good to your health, especially when they are indoors.
Having plants inside your home means you get lots of the advantages from being outside in nature. There
are many different kinds of houseplants—tiny cacti, hanging plants with long leaves and plants that can grow
more than a metre tall or wide. Your interest and knowledge of nature will develop when you research and learn
about different plants and the conditions they need to grow.
Plants need water, light and attention. When you care for them, you should be careful and responsible.
Nixon, who runs a flower shop called Green and Grounded, says looking after a plant can help you notice small
details (细节). Being responsible for houseplants can give you a feeling of purpose. Plants can make you more
creative. When you see the plant growing and flowering, you’ll feel a strong sense of achievement. You will also
develop patience because many plants grow slowly and may take months or even years to flower or bear fruit.
Houseplants do more than just make your room beautiful. Houseplants help you feel quieter and less
worried. Studies show that nature can make people feel relaxed. Houseplants are like little air cleaners to help you
sleep better, especially if you have a plant such as lavender (薰衣草) in your room. You can grow plants to eat,
such as salad leaves and tomatoes. Some plants can be used as medicine. Aloe Vera (芦荟) can deal with burns,
while peppermint (薄荷) helps with headaches.
26.What do we know from Paragraph 2?
A.Houseplants are very tall.
B.Growing indoor plants takes a lot of time.
C.Your interest in nature makes you healthier.
D.Growing indoor plants helps you enrich knowledge.

28.Which of the following would Nixon most likely agree with?
A.Running a plant shop is very simple. B.Plants are useless for creative people.
C.Large plants can grow faster than small ones. D.Caring for plants helps people feel meaningful.
29.Why does the writer give many examples in the last paragraph?
A.To express houseplants can help in many ways.
B.To show plants can make rooms look more colorful.
C.To compare the difficulty of growing different plants.
D.To encourage people to buy expensive medicinal plants.
30.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To teach readers how to protect the plants.
B.To introduce different kinds of houseplants.
C.To give information about how plants grow.
D.To tell readers the advantages of the houseplants.

Glaciers are formed in areas of high snowfall in winter and cool temperatures in summer. They can come in
different shapes and sizes. Some glaciers are small and they may only be a few meters wide. Some glaciers are
large, and they are over hundreds of thousands of kilometers.
About 10% of the world’s land is covered by such different sizes of glaciers. They serve as natural
reservoirs (水库) because about 75% of all the fresh water in the world is kept in glaciers. That’s why glaciers are
quite important.
Now some glaciers are disappearing because of global (全球的) warming. As the Earth becomes warmer,
glaciers melt quickly. Scientists believe that it will lead to serious results in the near future.
There will be more earthquakes. Large glaciers stop small earthquakes because the plates can’t move much
under these huge objects. In Southeast Alaska, some glaciers are gone, and the land is lifted. So the plates can
move more quickly, and this leads to more earthquakes there.
Volcanoes (火山) will become “hot” again. Volcanoes are waking up because of the disappearing glaciers.
Even volcanoes that weren’t lively have broken out several times in recent years. Scientists said that the glaciers
have something to do with it. The volcanoes will become “hot” again after the glaciers get thin.
People, animals and plants are in danger. Coral (珊瑚 ) grows in salt water. The more glaciers melt, the
more fresh water there will be, and it is not good for coral. People, animals and plants need fresh water from
glaciers to live. They will be in danger if too much fresh water goes into the sea.
Something must be done. Many people are now living a green life which is a way of living with less carbon
dioxide (CO₂). For example, they prefer to take public transportation and use both sides of the paper. These are

Nowadays, more and more Chinese people, especially young people, are staying up late at night. A survey
shows that the bedtime for most Chinese people is 00:18 am, which is 17 minutes later than last year. About 80
percent of college students go to bed after midnight, and one in four of them falls asleep after 2:00 am. About one
in three wakes up after 9:00 am.
Mobile phones are an important factor (因素) influencing studęnts’ sleep. The longer they use smartphones,
the later they go to bed. They just want to have more free time. The problem is called “revenge bedtime
procrastination (报复性睡前拖延)”. Many people have the problem because they have to work or study in the
daytime. Though they are very tired, they often stay up late to control their time after work. For example, some
people lie on the bed and watch short videos or read novels at midnight. Some people play on their phones until
midnight every day.
Most people have sleeping problems now. 65 percent of them have these problems once or twice each week.
The problems can be waking up during the night or too early, having trouble falling asleep, going to the bathroom
at night, and snoring (打鼾).
Healthy sleeping is not just about sleeping long, but about how well you sleep. To improve sleeping quality
(质量), your bedroom should be cool and dark. You can listen to some white noise, like the sound of rain. Also, go
to bed and wake up regularly every day. People who often do exercise can sleep better. They have less trouble
falling asleep than those who seldom exercise.
So, we should try to have enough sleep and develop good sleeping habits. This is very important for our
health and learning.

A.The kinds of sleeping problems. B.What things a good sleep needs.
C.The disadvantages of sleeping late. D.How to improve sleep quality.

Waiting hours to go on a theme park ride, queuing (排队) at the post office...
41 Really, we have a great deal of respect for queuing. Actually the act seems to have come from
the British people.
Like it or not, queuing is necessary to keep order and stop people from getting angry at each other. But
where does it come from? According to the website, Culture Trip, the origin (起源 ) of queuing go back to the
early 19th century at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution (工业革命) in England. 42 As cities
were getting bigger and more crowded, queuing naturally started to happen for everyday things like posting letters
at the post office or buying things in local shops.
But the real reputation (名声) of the British being “civilized (文明的) queuers” dates back to World War II,
says Culture Trip. 43 So wartime propaganda (宣传) encouraged people to “do their job and wait their
turn”.
As a Briton myself, I have to say this is true of the British people. We like things to be orderly. We believe
in showing politeness and waiting your turn. It’s in all manner of everyday activities. In the UK, it’s the custom to
let people get off buses before you get on. 44 It’s also very important to stand on the right on an
escalator (电梯) and let people walk on the left side. 45
A.It was very important to keep order during difficult times.
B.Everyone likes queuing except the British.
C.Why?
