We Can't Live Without Bees
Imagine you go to the supermarket in your area, but there are almost no fruits, vegetables, honey, milk, eggs, or chocolate. How would you feel? Disappointed? Angry? Sad? At this moment you realize people, plants, and animals are all connected. We need each other to live, and bees are one of the best examples of this connection.
Bees are very hard-working animals, and their greatest work is pollination. On one trip, they often visit 50 to 100 flowers. As they fly from one flower to another, they take pollen with them. This action helps plants grow. In fact, without their work, about 80 per cent of the plants in the world cannot grow. For this reason, many scientists believe that bees are the most important animals on this planet.
Bees are also one of the most interesting animals in the world. For example, they work hard together to make their homes. In order to store honey, they create honeycombs. Another interesting thing about bees is how they communicate. When a bee finds new food, it uses a dance to tell the others where and how far away the food is.
Bees are an important part of the ecosystem of our planet. However, the number of bees is dropping, and scientists are worried. They need our help, and there is a lot we can do. Think about what you can do to protect one of the most amazing animals on earth.

The Brave Homing Pigeon
(Adapted from Ernest Seton's Animal Heroes)
Somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, 1862.
The captain sighed. This was the thickest fog he had ever seen. They were over 330 kilometres from the closest land, so he didn't know where to go. The ship was on its way to Europe. Just ten hours ago they left New York, but now the engine stopped working. Clearly, they needed help!
Suddenly, the captain remembered the homing pigeons. He ran to them quickly, wrote a message for help, and tied it to Big Blue's leg. Big Blue flew up and then returned almost right away.
The captain became more worried.
"You are our last hope, little guy," said the captain as he tied a note to Army, the smaller and younger of the two pigeons. The captain threw him into the air. Army flew around and around, higher and higher. Soon, the bird was away from the ship, and the captain couldn't see Army anymore.
"That's a good sign," said the captain with more hope.
Almost 340 kilometres away, Billy heard fast - moving wings come into his building and go straight to the water bowl.
"Hi there, little guy. Well, aren't you the thirstiest bird!" Billy smiled. Then he saw the note.
Billy knew what to do. He took the note, running as fast as he could to the company office. There, he learnt Army had flown in fog and over the sea, for more than four hours.
Thanks to Army, people sent help to the ship.
The captain later explained, "Army really is the most amazing bird!"

China will have 75 percent of its wild animals on land under the national key protection system by 2025, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration(国家林业和草原局) said. Its announcement took place on Sunday, which happened to be international Day for Biological Diversity(多样性).
The administration said that part of China’s achievements in protecting wild animals lie in setting wild animals into nature reserves(保护区) after human breeding(繁殖). It said that nine milu deer(麋鹿) recently came into the world in the Daqingshan National Nature Reserve in Inner Mongolia. They are babies of the milu deer, or Pere David’s deer, who were set into the wild in September following human breeding in Beijing and Jiangsu province.
According to the administration, human breeding has helped to increase population of some animal kinds that had before disappeared in the wild, such as milu deer and Przewalski’s horses. There are now around 10, 000 milu deer and around 700 Przewulski’s horses. As for other wild populations, the giant panda population has increased from 1,114 in the 1980s to 1,864. The number of wild Asian elephants has increased from about 180 to 300 over the same period.
The administration plans to improve the protection of wild animals—including giant pandas, Siberian tigers, Asian elephants, and snow leopards.
At the same time, the government has made more efforts to punish unlawful trading in wildlife, which also helps with the increase of wild animals.

Siberian tigers mainly live in eastern Russia, northeast China, and the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. At the beginning of the 20th century, Siberian tigers were widely found in northeast China. However, the tigers disappeared in the area because of different reasons in the 1970s. They are on China’s first-class protection list.
“In order to protect Siberian tigers, China has been taking action. In Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park in Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, a high-tech system has been used to provide real-time (实时的) protection for the plants and animals. The system has taken more than 4,000 pictures of Siberian tigers and Amur leopards,” according to Hou Ling, the director of the park’s office. Besides, some people would like to join the teams of protecting wild tigers. Dong Hongyu, a 55-year-old man from Heilongjiang Province, has been working for protecting Siberian tigers for 22 years. Although it was difficult sometimes, this protector never thought about giving up.
Luckily, all these efforts have paid off. Now there are more than sixty Siberian tigers in our country. More importantly, the survival rate (存活率) of young Siberian tigers has increased from 33 percent in 2016 to 50 percent now.
Not only Siberian tigers but also many other kinds of endangered animals have been protected. Over the past few years, China has made great achievements in wildlife protection.

One of the most successful examples is the giant panda. The population of the wild giant pandas has grown from 1,114 in the 1970s to 1,864 now.
