Sharks:Dangerous or endangered
We see a woman swimming (swim) at night in a dark sea. Suddenly, she is pulled underwater (被拖到水下). She surfaces (露出水面), cries in fear (惊恐地尖叫), then disappears forever. This is the opening scene (开场画面) from the 1975 film Jaws, showing (show) a shark attack. It tells the story of a great white shark that attacks and kills swimmers. Jaws was a great success, attracting (attract) huge audiences and winning many awards (获得许多奖项). It strengthened (strong) people’s long-held idea (固有的想法) of the great white shark as a dangerous animal.
People have always been scared of (害怕) sharks, but Jaws make things worse (bad). It made people frightened of sharks (使人们害怕鲨鱼), especially of the great white shark. Many people who saw the film started to believe that sharks were bad animals that ate humans. Some people stopped swimming in the sea, afraid of the horrible creature (可怕的生物) from the film. Other people started fishing for sharks, killing (kill) as many as they could. At that time, nobody cared if sharks were killed, or how many were killed. People just wanted them killed (kill).
After 1975, the number of (……的数量) large sharks around America fell quickly, and soon fell around the world. This was not only due to (因为) fear of sharks, but also finning (采割鱼鳍). Finning is a type of fishing where sharks are caught and their fins cut off (切掉). The sharks are thrown (throw) back into the sea where they die slowly and painfully (pain). The fins are used in shark fin soup. Finning kills millions of sharks a year.
Finning would have an unexpected effect upon Peter Benchley, the man who wrote the book the film Jaws was based on. In 1980, Benchley was diving (dive) when he came across and awful sight. It was an area where fishermen were finning, and the sea floor was covered with dead sharks. Benchley saw sharks being killed (kill) and this caused a deep change in him. He came to see people as a danger to sharks, rather than the other way round. From that day on, he fought (fight) to protect sharks. He admitted (admit) that his book was wrong about sharks’ behavior (行为). “Sharks don’t target (把……作为目标) humans,” he said. Experts have proved (专家们已经证明) that sharks do not see people as food, and they attack us by mistake (无意地袭击我们). Only around (大约) six people are killed by sharks every year.
Fortunately (幸运的是), not everyone who watched the film Jaws became afraid of sharks – some became interested in understanding (understanding) them. Today, as we learn more about sharks, more people than ever want to protect them from extinction (保护它们免遭灭绝).
