Volunteering at Sunshine Special School
I have recently participated in a volunteer activity at Sunshine Special School. Every Saturday, I help children with blindness improve their English. Though they face challenges, their enthusiasm to learn touches me deeply. One rainy afternoon, I taught them to sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” in English. Their joyous voices filled the classroom, and a girl named Lily even shared her dream of becoming a translator. The school’s headmaster praised my efforts, saying “Your presence brightened their world.”
Through interactions with the kids, I’ve learned that volunteering here isn’t just about teaching; it’s about building bridges of understanding. I’m proud to share this experience in our school’ s English newspaper, hoping to inspire more of you to join me and make a difference to the children in need.
That night, Hollis searched online for ways to care for an injured bird. He learned that he should keep the bird warm and quiet, and that he needed to find a proper diet for it. He quickly set up a small, cozy corner in the shoebox with some soft tissues. Then, he found some bird food at a nearby store. Every few hours, he carefully fed the sparrow with a tiny dropper, making sure not to hurt it. As days passed, the sparrow gradually got better. Its weak chirps became louder, and the red spot on its wing started to fade. Hollis was overjoyed to see the progress.
Three weeks later, the sparrow was completely healed, lively and healthy again. Hollis knew it was time to let it go back to the wild. With a bit of sadness in his heart, he carried the shoebox outside. He opened the box, and the sparrow hopped out onto his hand. It looked at Hollis with those shiny black eyes as if saying thank you. Then, with a flutter of its wings, it took off into the blue sky. Watching it fly away, Hollis felt a deep sense of satisfaction. He had not only saved a life but also learned the importance of being brave and kind when faced with a creature in need.

Pat Smith, a 70-year-old grandmother, has become a famous environmental activist. She spent one year cleaning up litter from 52 beaches on the UK’s south coast.
Smith set out on her task in January to carry out her New Year’s resolution (决心) of making her community a better and cleaner place. The great goal came to her after watching a documentary on plastic pollution the previous year, and she knew she couldn’t just do nothing.
Over the year, Smith cleaned beaches from Coverack on the Lizard Peninsula to Blackpool Sands in Devon. Often, volunteers would join her in her efforts. During her beach cleans, Smith was sometimes mistaken for doing community service that have been ordered by court as a punishment. She said:“People don’t understand I’ve been doing this voluntarily. We should all take responsibility for picking up the litter as well as ensuring we don’t drop litter in the first place.”
She manages to make her hometown an example for the plastic-free movement in the United Kingdom. In order to help achieve this goal, she founded The Final Straw (吸管). “I founded the Final Straw to try and raise awareness of the very harmful damage we are doing to our oceans from our using single-use plastics. I feel I have a responsibility to my children and grandchildren to do something about it,” she said.
Her resolution year may be over but this grandma continues her pursuit (追求). “A lot of the rubbish I have picked up is everyday items,” said Pat. “These things are used by all of us and it is shocking to find them polluting our beautiful beaches. Please let’s try to be morel thoughtful in this coming year. I’m driven to try and protect our living planet for my children and grandchildren and I will continue to do everything in my power to achieve that.” It’s particularly heartwarming to see more and more people taking part in it and learning about how plastic affects our world, as this gives us all a lot of hope for the future.

As part of your trip to Australia, you must make sure you experience some Aboriginal Culture. Before the British and European settlers arrived in Australia, the only residents were the Aboriginal.
European settlers brought Old World diseases which the Aboriginal could not cope with, so many people died. To make fraters worse, they weren’t given any rights to the land and they were pushed out to make way for the Europeans. Nowadays, the Aboriginal account for just three percent of the Australian population, and many suffer from alcohol and health problems. But there are pockets within Australia where you can still see their old values and traditions. These are key places to learnt more about Aboriginal cultures and beliefs.

What’s good for your aging gut (肠道) may also be good for your aging brain. A study found that taking daily prebiotics (益生菌) can improve scores on memory tests in people over the age of 60.
The findings are food for thought, especially as the same memory test is used to identify early signs of Alzheimer’s disease. The double-blinded trial included two prebiotics accessible over the counter in numerous nations around the world. To test the effect of these prebiotics on the aging brain, researchers enlisted 36 pairs of twins (双胞胎) over the age of 60. In each pair one twin was given a protein powder with prebiotics and the other was given a protein powder without prebiotics. The twin who unknowingly took the first one generally scored higher on a cognitive (认知的) test three months later.
Evidence for the close relationship between the gut and the brain is growing year after year. Some experts refer to the gut as the body’s second brain. But the way these two nervous systems work together remains a secret. The recent twin study suggests that consuming certain “brain foods” may be a promising way to treat the fall of cognitive ability.
“We are excited to see this. It holds huge promise for strengthening brain health and memory in our aging population,” said Mary Ni Lochlainn, a geriatric medicine researcher at King’s College London. “Unlocking the secrets of gut and brain could offer new approaches for living more healthily for longer.” While prebiotics might improve some aspects of cognitive function in an aging brain, like memory and processing times, there don’t appear to be significant physical benefits. For example, muscle loss doesn’t improve among aging twins taking prebiotics.
The twins who participated in the current trial were mostly female, and even though the researchers considered sex differences in their findings, they accept that there may be some selection bias, for females are more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. “Our next task is to see whether these effects can continue over longer periods and in larger groups of people.” said Mary.
32.What does paragraph 2 focus on?
A.The purpose of the study. B.The process of the research.
C.The function of the prebiotics. D.The identity of the participants.
33.Why is the gut considered as the body’s second brain?
A.A healthy gut reflects a smart brain.
B.The gut and the brain go hand in hand.
C.Their nervous systems run the same way.
D.Brain foods benefit the cognition of the aged.
34.What can we know from paragraph 4?
A.Memory strengthening is a must for the old.
B.Muscle loss is unavoidable as we grow older.
C.The secret between gut and brain has come out.
D.The benefits of prebiotics on the aged are limited.
35.What does the underlined word “bias” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Principle. B.Freedom. C.Preference. D.Guidance.

Chinese classical gardens, especially those in Suzhou, are living 56 (masterpiece) of landscape design. Unlike Western gardens 57 emphasize geometric shapes and symmetry, these gardens pursue natural beauty. The designers cleverly use “borrowed scenery” techniques, 58 (combine) distant mountains, flowing water and even changing weather into the view. For instance, a well-placed window might frame a far-off tower, making it seem like an essential part of the garden.
At the heart of this art 59 (lie) the philosophy of “harmony between human and nature”. Every rock, plant and river 60 (arrange) not randomly, but according to Taoist principles of balance. Visitors who follow winding paths will suddenly meet a moon gate or a curved bridge, uncovering a new scene like a scroll painting unrolling. These elements are 61 (care) crafted to create a sense of quietness and connection with nature.
In modern times, these gardens have become an 62 (inspire) for eco-friendly architecture. Their focus 63 space efficiency and sustainable materials challenges contemporary designers 64 (rethink) what “luxury” truly means. As one architect puts it, “Suzhou gardens teach us that true beauty lies not in possession, but in 65 art of appreciating what already exists.” This unique building art continues to influence designers around the world, leading to more sustainable and harmonious building designs.

It was raining outside, and Hollis was working on his homework in his quiet bedroom. The sound of the rain almost made him sleepy until — “thump!” — a soft noise at the window made him jump. Putting down his pencil, he walked to the window. There, just inches away on the wet windowsill (窗台), lay a small brown sparrow (麻雀). The little bird wasn’t moving much except for its chest going up and down as it breathed. Raindrops soaked its feathers. making its tiny body look even smaller and more helpless.
Hollis reached for the window but stopped halfway. His biology teacher’s warning played in his mind like a recording: “Never touch wild birds with bare hands because they can make you sick.” He bit his lip, unsure whether to help the suffering creature or not. The sparrow turned its head slightly, and Hollis saw its shiny black eyes filled with fear. A small red spot on its wing caught his attention — was that blood? His heart pounded as he imagined the bird dying alone in the cold rain. “What should I do?” he whispered to himself.
Suddenly, a gust of wind shook the window. The sparrow let out a weak chirp (鸟叫声) Without another thought, Hollis opened the window and carefully held the bird in his hands. “It’s okay,” he murmured softly. “I’ve got you now.”
Hollis rushed to find something to keep the bird safe. Spotting an old shoebox, he placed the sparrow inside as gently as possible. Every few minutes, he would check the bird, hoping to see some improvement. Each time he checked, he whispered a few encouraging words — though whether they were meant for the bird or himself, he wasn’t quite sure. A stubborn determination settled in his chest. Whatever it took, he would help his fragile new friend.

Pat Smith, a 70-year-old grandmother, has become a famous environmental activist. She spent one year
cleaning up litter from 52 beaches on the UK’s south coast.
Smith set out on her task in January to carry out her New Year’s resolution (决心 ) of making her
community a better and cleaner place. The great goal came to her after watching a documentary on plastic
pollution the previous year, and she knew she couldn’t just do nothing.
Over the year, Smith cleaned beaches from Coverack on the Lizard Peninsula to Blackpool Sands in Devon.

Often, volunteers would join her in her efforts. During her beach cleans, Smith was sometimes mistaken for doing
community service that have been ordered by court as a punishment. She said:“People don’t understand I’ve been
doing this voluntarily. We should all take responsibility for picking up the litter as well as ensuring we don’t drop
litter in the first place.”
She manages to make her hometown an example for the plastic-free movement in the United Kingdom. In
order to help achieve this goal, she founded The Final Straw (吸管). “I founded the Final Straw to try and raise
awareness of the very harmful damage we are doing to our oceans from our using single-use plastics. I feel I have
a responsibility to my children and grandchildren to do something about it,” she said.
Her resolution year may be over but this grandma continues her pursuit (追求). “A lot of the rubbish I have
picked up is everyday items,” said Pat. “These things are used by all of us and it is shocking to find them polluting
our beautiful beaches. Please let’s try to be morel thoughtful in this coming year. I’m driven to try and protect our

As part of your trip to Australia, you must make sure you experience some Aboriginal Culture. Before the
British and European settlers arrived in Australia, the only residents were the Aboriginal.
European settlers brought Old World diseases which the Aboriginal could not cope with, so many people
died. To make fraters worse, they weren’t given any rights to the land and they were pushed out to make way for
the Europeans. Nowadays, the Aboriginal account for just three percent of the Australian population, and many
suffer from alcohol and health problems. But there are pockets within Australia where you can still see their old
values and traditions. These are key places to learnt more about Aboriginal cultures and beliefs.
The Aboriginal Culture is complex with many beliefs and hidden layers to explore, Music and art are the
most well-known aspects. Did you know that the didgeridoo is only used by those from the East Rock art is the
oldest form of the Aboriginal art and can be found in places such as Ayers Rock and Kakadu National Park as

Darwin in the top-end of Australia, is the best place to go. Numbers of tourists are restricted to this sacred area so
you can guarantee a less touristy approach. You do get to appreciate the real culture and see real Aboriginal dot
paintings and handiwork. You can easily include a day trip here as part of your trip to Darwin. Remember that this
area has defined seasons so only come here between May and October.

What’s good for your aging gut (肠道) may also be good for your aging brain. A study found that taking
daily prebiotics (益生菌) can improve scores on memory tests in people over the age of 60.
The findings are food for thought, especially as the same memory test is used to identify early signs of
Alzheimer’s disease. The double-blinded trial included two prebiotics accessible over the counter in numerous
nations around the world. To test the effect of these prebiotics on the aging brain, researchers enlisted 36 pairs of
twins (双胞胎) over the age of 60. In each pair one twin was given a protein powder with prebiotics and the other
was given a protein powder without prebiotics. The twin who unknowingly took the first one generally scored
higher on a cognitive (认知的) test three months later.
Evidence for the close relationship between the gut and the brain is growing year after year. Some experts
refer to the gut as the body’s second brain. But the way these two nervous systems work together remains a secret.
The recent twin study suggests that consuming certain “brain foods” may be a promising way to treat the fall of
cognitive ability.
“We are excited to see this. It holds huge promise for strengthening brain health and memory in our aging
population,” said Mary Ni Lochlainn, a geriatric medicine researcher at King’s College London. “Unlocking the
secrets of gut and brain could offer new approaches for living more healthily for longer.” While prebiotics might
improve some aspects of cognitive function in an aging brain, like memory and processing times, there don’t
appear to be significant physical benefits. For example, muscle loss doesn’t improve among aging twins taking
prebiotics.
The twins who participated in the current trial were mostly female, and even though the researchers
considered sex differences in their findings, they accept that there may be some selection bias, for females are
more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. “Our next task is to see whether these effects can continue over
longer periods and in larger groups of people.” said Mary.
D.Guidance.

Traditional festivals and cultures
36 They are celebrated with great enthusiasm. They are usually celebrated on special dates and
are accompanied by unique customs and traditions.
For example, the Spring Festival in China is the most important traditional festival. It is a time for family
reunions. People clean their houses, put up spring couplets, and have a big dinner together on New Year’s Eve.
37 Another example is Christmas in Western countries. It is celebrated on December 25th to commemorate
the birth of Jesus Christ. People decorate Christmas trees, exchange gifts, and go to church.
38 They carry the history, values, and beliefs of a nation to its descendants. Through these
festivals, people can learn about their ancestors’ wisdom and traditions. For example, the Dragon Boat Festival in

It was raining outside, and Hollis was working on his homework in his quiet bedroom. The sound of the
rain almost made him sleepy until — “thump!” — a soft noise at the window made him jump. Putting down his
pencil, he walked to the window. There, just inches away on the wet windowsill (窗台), lay a small brown sparrow
The little bird wasn’t moving much except for its chest going up and down as it breathed. Raindrops
soaked its feathers. making its tiny body look even smaller and more helpless.
Hollis reached for the window but stopped halfway. His biology teacher’s warning played in his mind like a
recording: “Never touch wild birds with bare hands because they can make you sick.” He bit his lip, unsure
whether to help the suffering creature or not. The sparrow turned its head slightly, and Hollis saw its shiny black
eyes filled with fear. A small red spot on its wing caught his attention — was that blood? His heart pounded as he
imagined the bird dying alone in the cold rain. “What should I do?” he whispered to himself.
Suddenly, a gust of wind shook the window. The sparrow let out a weak chirp (鸟叫声) Without another
thought, Hollis opened the window and carefully held the bird in his hands. “It’s okay,” he murmured softly. “I’ve
got you now.”
Hollis rushed to find something to keep the bird safe. Spotting an old shoebox, he placed the sparrow inside
as gently as possible. Every few minutes, he would check the bird, hoping to see some improvement. Each time he
checked, he whispered a few encouraging words — though whether they were meant for the bird or himself, he
wasn’t quite sure. A stubborn determination settled in his chest. Whatever it took, he would help his fragile new
friend.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150个左右;
That night, Hollis searched online for ways to care for an injured bird.

A.Community service.
B.A film or television program.
C.Serious pollution in her community.
D.Various ocean protection activities.

A.She was forced to do that.
B.She just pretended to be caring.
C.She actually did only a little work.
D.She wouldn’t stick to the work for long.
26.Why did Smith found The Final Straw?
A.To set a good example to other aged people.
B.To keep her promise to her children and grandchildren.
C.To make people realize the problems with plastic waste.
D.To stop the local companies from producing plastic straws.
27.Which words best describe Smith as an environmental activist?
A.Polite and warm. B.Calm and helpful.
C.Clever and brave. D.Inspiring and determined.

The Aboriginal Culture is complex with many beliefs and hidden layers to explore, Music and art are the most well-known aspects.
D.Guidance.

Traditional festivals and cultures
36 They are celebrated with great enthusiasm. They are usually celebrated on special dates and are accompanied by unique customs and traditions.
For example, the Spring Festival in China is the most important traditional festival. It is a time for family reunions. People clean their houses, put up spring couplets, and have a big dinner together on New Year’s Eve. 37 Another example is Christmas in Western countries. It is celebrated on December 25th to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. People decorate Christmas trees, exchange gifts, and go to church.

18.When did John become serious about golf?
A.At the age of 12. B.At the age of 16. C.At the age of 18.
19.What was the teachers’ attitude toward John’s dream?
A.Disapproving. B.Supportive. C.Indifferent.
20.What has made golf more popular among younger people?
A.Increased income of athletes.
B.Quality and affordable equipment.
C.Inspiration from young successful golfers.
【答案】18.B 19.A 20.C
M: Good afternoon, everyone. I’m John and I’m glad to be here today. I started playing golf about 18 years ago — when I was 12, though I didn’t really take it seriously until four years later. My dad was crazy about golf. He’d like to watch the international competitions on TV and he’d ask me to watch them with him. Looking back, when I told my teachers that I wanted to become a professional golfer, they all tried to put me off. I wish they’d given me support. That wasn’t particularly surprising, I suppose, especially a few years ago — everyone thought golf was just a game for the rich while my parents were just blue-collar workers. I think it’s a little different today, but not much. For example, I think the government should do something for young people who play golf, like allowing them to hire good quality equipment at a reasonable price. Having said that, what really seems to be making a difference among younger people is the huge success of some young British players these days. I’m in this sport because I like it and I can make a reasonable income from it. It hasn’t made me enormously wealthy, but it’s given me huge enjoyment over the years.

D.Guidance.
【答案】32.B 33.B 34.D 35.C

To test the effect of these prebiotics on the aging brain, researchers enlisted 36 pairs of twins over the age of 60. In each pair one twin was given a protein powder with prebiotics and the other was given a protein powder without prebiotics. The twin who unknowingly took the first one generally scored higher on a cognitive test three months later.
根据第三段中的“Evidence for the close relationship between the gut and the brain is growing year after year. Some experts refer to the gut as the body’s second brain. (肠道与大脑之间密切关系的证据逐年增多。一些专家将肠道称为人体的“第二大脑”)”可知,肠道被称为“第二大脑”是因为其与大脑密切相关。故选B项。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“While prebiotics might improve some aspects of cognitive function in an aging brain, like memory and processing times, there don’t appear to be significant physical benefits. For example, muscle loss doesn’t improve among aging twins taking prebiotics. (尽管益生菌可能改善衰老大脑的某些认知功能,如记忆力和处理速度,但似乎没有显著的身体益处。例如,服用益生菌的老年双胞胎的肌肉流失并未改善)”可推知,益生菌对老年人的益处仅限于认知功能部分方面,存在局限性。故选D项。
35.词句猜测题。根据第五段中的“The twins who participated in the current trial were mostly female, and even though the researchers considered sex differences in their findings, they accept that there may be some selection bias, for females are more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. (参与当前试验的双胞胎大多为女性,尽管研究人员在结果中考虑了性别差异,但他们承认可能存在一些选择……,因为女性更易患阿尔茨海默病)”可知,实验对象多为女性,可能导致结果偏向特定群体,由此推断,划线单词意为“偏差;倾向”,与“preference(偏好)”含义相近。故选C项。

In modern times, these gardens have become an 62 (inspire) for eco-friendly architecture.
56.masterpieces 57.that/which 58.combining 59.lies 60.is arranged 61.carefully 62.inspiration 63.on 64.to rethink 65.the
故填that/ which。
此句是倒装句,主语是the philosophy of “harmony between human and nature”,陈述事实用一般现在时,谓语用三单形式。故填lies。
故填is arranged。
故填on。
challenge sb. to do sth.
故填the。

【答案】one possible version:

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
That night, Hollis searched online for ways to care for an injured bird.

Three weeks later, the sparrow was completely healed, lively and healthy again.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:

That's a shame. I suppose cameras aren't as popular these days. Nowadays, you can take good pictures with a phone, so suddenly everybody is a photographer. Most camera shops can't compete with internet Prices. In fact, the same is true of for other shops. What are you going to buy . some memory cards? There's a sale on today. Do you still take photographs professionally? Sometimes people ask for pictures of their kids, but usually I just take pictures of plants and animals for pleasure. I am doing a wedding on saturday, though. Listen to the next question. I didn't know that in foreign countries, men should always pick up the bill or pay for cinema tickets. IT sounds very good to me. So other examples are opening doors for women, helping them put on their coats, Carrying heavy bags or luggage, helping them sit down at the table. Man, take care of women . because men don't need to do that. IT just gives you the idea that girls and women can open the door for themselves. IT puts women in a bad position. Men and women are equal. Women can, yeah, they should Carry their own heavy bags and pay for the . ticket to the cinema sometimes. And men should help to do the dishes. I invited jarred over for dinner this friday evening. That's great. I haven't seen him for months since he moved to the new neighborhood. Me, neither. I told him to come at seven o'clock. Why so late? I'd like to have a couple of drinks with Jerry in the yard before dinner. I'll mesage him and ask him to come at five o'clock. I'm going on a business trip on friday, so i'll get home close to six o'clock. Okay, let's make IT six P. M. Then will you cook or should I prepare a barbecue? Actually neither. I won't have time for that, and you can't manage all this by yourself. So I called that restaurant near my office to ask if they could organize everything. They'll bring the food anytime we want. brilliant. Anyway, i'll stop by the supermarket to get some snacks and drinks on friday afternoon. No, don't bother. Jerry will do IT one more thing you'd Better put away your tools in the yard since we will spend some time there OK. And don't forget to take coffee to her grandma's the day before friday. Good afternoon, everyone. I'm john, and i'm glad to be here today. I started playing golf about eighty years ago when I was twelve, though I didn't really take IT seriously until four years later. My dad was crazy about golf. He'd like to watch the international competitions on T, V, and he'd asked me to watch them with him. Looking back when I told my teachers that I wanted to become a professional golfer, they all tried to put me off. I wish they'd given me support. That wasn't particularly surprising, I suppose, especially a few years ago, everyone fought golf was just a game for the rich while my parents were just blue collar workers. I think it's a little different today, but not much. For example, I think the government should do something for Young people who play golf, like allowing them to hire good quality equipment at a reasonable Price. Having said that, what really seems to be making a difference among Younger people is the huge success of some Young british players these days. I'm in this sport because I like IT, and I can make a reasonable income from IT. IT hasn't made me enormously wealthy, but is given me huge enjoyment over the years. Good afternoon, everyone.
