In March 2021, she was one of the 12 crew members who set out on the 3,000-mile journey from Tenerife to battle sun, salt and fierce currents. “We would row in three-hour shifts and only sleep for an hour or so every six hours,” she says. “For the first 15 days, I was seasick, so I hardly ate anything. I was just rowing and collapsing. I went through some pretty dark times.” But after 42 days on the water, Davies reached Antigua to become one of the only six women in the world over the age of 60 to have rowed across an ocean. “I was exhausted and I was also so proud of myself,” she says. Davies began rowing when she was 53, after spotting a six-oar (桨) rowing boat in Bristol harbor. Attracted by its size and appearance, she spoke to the crew and was encouraged to do a trial run. “As soon as I got on the water, I fell in love with it,” she says. “Feeling your whole body working and the fresh air on your skin is amazing.” It wasn’t until 2017, though, that her Atlantic plans were born. Suffering from a herniated disc (椎间盘突出), she was only able to crawl out of bed. “I began thinking of things I could look forward to after I had surgery,” she says. “One day I was reading about women adventurers when it hit me that once better, I would row across an ocean.” After successful surgery, Davies began driving to meet other women who had undertaken rows. Hearing the experiences and advice of them gave Davies the confidence. Soon after, she heard that a new boat producer was organizing a team for a voyage across the Atlantic and she joined it immediately. “In June, I’m planning to break a few world records by rowing around the UK when I’m 64, and I want to motorcycle through the Himalayas later in the year. After all, we need things to look back on.” she says. 4. What do we know about Davies’ journey across the Atlantic? A. She fell apart and abandoned the task. B. She suffered a lot during the process. C. She was the oldest woman to finish it. D. She rowed along with six other women. 5. How did Davies feel about her first attempt to row? A. Painful. B. Frightened. C. Confident. D. Impressed. 6. What inspired Davies to row across an ocean? A. A trial row on a six-oar rowing boat. B. Support from a boat company. C. Stories of some women adventurers. D. Sufferings from her back pain. 7. Which of the following best describes Davies? A. Caring and open-minded. B. Humble and self-motivated. C. Determined and easy-going. D. Strong-willed and ambitious. C Trying to imagine white sheep, jumping one by one over a fence, is a well-known solution for sleeplessness. I don't have the problem often, but I've often wondered just who came up with such a silly suggestion. If the idea is to bore yourself to sleep, why not count backward? And who decided on sheep? Why not rabbits, horses or kangaroos? History supposedly provides the answer: It was said to be a way for ancient shepherds (牧羊人) short of human company for weeks at a time, to fall asleep each night-they counted their sheep until sleepy. Whether that's true or not, I don’t know. So does counting sheep really help you fall asleep? A 2002 study on fighting sleeplessness put the way to the test. In fact, that wasn’t the point of the research. “Our study more than 20 years ago wasn’t about counting sheep; it was just about using imagery (图像) to fight sleeplessness, ” said Harvey, who conducted the research. Harvey’s research divided 50 people into three groups. The first had no instructions on how to fall asleep while members of the second were told to distract from thoughts, worries and concerns in any way they wanted. The third group was instructed to perform an interesting imagery task, such as creating or remembering a waterfall, a holiday or a summer afternoon in the sun. Those who used imagery reported falling asleep much faster than either of the two other groups, and they rated their thoughts, worries and concerns to be less uncomfortable than people in the distraction or no instruction group. While she didn’t actually study counting sheep as a way of treating sleeplessness, Harvey does have an opinion based on her years as a sleep expert. “Counting sheep usually does not do the trick,” she said. “Instead, we work out a menu of options with people, because everyone is different and not one option is going to help every single time.” Over two decades later, Harvey still emphasizes that using one’s imagination is a top tip. 8. Why did the author mention other animals in paragraph 1? A. To stress the equality of all animals. B. To show his doubt about the solution. C. To prove the effect of counting sheep. D. To confirm his assumption about sleep. 9. What’s the focus of the study in 2002? A. Sleeping habits. B. Testing methods. C. Counting sheep. D. Using imagination. 10. What can be inferred from paragraph 4? A. Imagining scenes may aid in sleep. B. Counting sheep cures sleeplessness. C. Falling asleep faster removes worries. D. Rating thoughts can be uncomfortable. 11. Which of the following would Harvey most probably agree with? A. Offering a nutritious menu for sleepless people. B. Regarding all traditional methods as ineffective. C. Suggesting a customized plan for each individual. D. Supporting the use of imagination as the only way. D Djukic is a biology and chemistry student at John Carroll University. She never thought that one day she would be in a classroom where an English teacher asked her to play a board game in order to learn about climate change. Debra Rosenthal is the professor of the class. At first, Djukic said she was uncertain about Rosenthal’s board game idea. “I was just like: ‘this is interesting, but how much are we actually going to take away from it?” Rosenthal thought her students would gain a greater understanding about how their own ideas and experiences affect climate change. Students do not compete against each other. They work together to choose the best plan of action. The game is different from board games such as Monopoly, where the goal is to win. Rosenthal said she hoped the games would give students a chance to talk about climate change in a new way. “By playing the games, it’s a way to be social, to engage in conversation. There has to be a lot of energy around the table. It’s very collaborative. And in the game that I chose to play, they really were able to work together and try to come up with a solution so that the planet was not destroyed.” During the class, she said, students laughed, disagreed and had to call for votes as a way to decide how to move forward in the game. Djukic said it was a “way to have fun...while also learning about such a serious subject.” The games are global, Djukic said. That is because she and her classmates said they were able to see how one player’s decision about agriculture affected another player on the other side of the world. She said the games showed her that “in the game of climate change and the climate crisis, no individual wins.” “It’s either we all suffer from this, or we all somehow collaborate to work our way out of this and turn the clock back on climate change.” 12 What is the purpose of Rosenthal’s class arrangement? A. To inspire the competition among students. B. To entertain the students with the board game. C. To stress the damage caused by climate change. D. To encourage student’s viewpoints about climate change. 13. Which best describes the board game according to paragraph 4? A. Cooperative. B. Competitive. C. Creative. D. Exclusive. 14. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A. Agriculture is of vital importance to the world. B. The world is a community of shared future. C. Man with strong will can conquer nature. D. Climate change is a tough problem to solve. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Climate change calls for teamwork. B. Climate change leads to global impact. C. A board game helps students understand climate issues. D. A good teacher gives students lifelong benefits. How to Keep a Pet Bird Quiet Birds can be excellent companions, but they can also make a lot of noise. 根据第一段的“Trying to imagine white sheep, jumping one by one over a fence, is a well-known solution for sleeplessness. I don't have the problem often, but I've often wondered just who came up with such a silly suggestion. If the idea is to bore yourself to sleep, why not count backward? And who decided on sheep? Why not rabbits, horses or kangaroos?(试着想象白羊一只接一只地跳过篱笆,这是一个众所周知的失眠解决方案。我不经常遇到这个问题,但我经常想知道是谁想出了这样一个愚蠢的建议。如果这个想法是为了让你无聊到睡着,为什么不倒着数呢?谁决定数羊的?为什么不是兔子、马或袋鼠呢?)”可知,作者提到兔子、马、袋鼠等其他动物来表达对具体选择羊来计数以诱导睡眠的怀疑和好奇,即他对通过数羊来解决睡眠问题方案表示怀疑。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段的“A 2002 study on fighting sleeplessness put the way to the test. In fact, that wasn’t the point of the research. “Our study more than 20 years ago wasn’t about counting sheep; it was just about using imagery to fight sleeplessness, ” said Harvey, who conducted the research.(2002年一项关于对抗失眠的研究对此进行了测试。事实上,这并不是这项研究的重点。“我们20多年前的研究不是关于数羊;而是用想象来对抗失眠,”主持这项研究的哈维说。) ”可知,2002年研究的重点是使用想象作为对抗失眠的方法,即使用想象力。故选D。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段的“Harvey’s research divided 50 people into three groups. The first had no instructions on how to fall asleep, while members of the second were told to distract from thoughts, worries and concerns in any way they wanted. The third group was instructed to perform an interesting imagery task, such as creating or remembering a waterfall, a holiday or a summer afternoon in the sun. Those who used imagery reported falling asleep much faster than either of the two other groups, and they rated their thoughts, worries and concerns to be less uncomfortable than people in the distraction or no instruction group.(哈维的研究将50人分成三组。 故选A。 根据最后一段的“While she didn’t actually study counting sheep as a way of treating sleeplessness, Harvey does have an opinion based on her years as a sleep expert. “Counting sheep usually does not do the trick,” she said. “Instead, we work out a menu of options with people, because everyone is different and not one option is going to help every single time.” Over two decades later, Harvey still emphasizes that using one’s imagination is a top tip.(虽然哈维并没有把数羊作为一种治疗失眠的方法进行研究,但根据她多年来作为睡眠专家的经验,她确实有自己的观点。“数羊通常是行不通的,”她说。“相反,我们和人们一起制定了一个选项菜单,因为每个人都是不同的,没有一个选项每次都能奏效。”20多年后,哈维仍然强调,发挥想象力是最重要的建议。)”可知,哈维强调不同的人应该使用不同的方法才有效,坚持利用自己的想象力作为对抗失眠的首要建议,但不是唯一做法,即哈维主张为每个人提供量身定制的计划。故选C。 D Djukic is a biology and chemistry student at John Carroll University. She said the games showed her that “in the game of climate change and the climate crisis, no individual wins.” “It’s either we all suffer from this, or we all somehow collaborate to work our way out of this and turn the clock back on climate change.” 12. What is the purpose of Rosenthal’s class arrangement? A. To inspire the competition among students. B. To entertain the students with the board game. C. To stress the damage caused by climate change. D. To encourage student’s viewpoints about climate change. 13. Which best describes the board game according to paragraph 4? A. Cooperative. B. Competitive. C. Creative. D. Exclusive. 14 What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A. Agriculture is of vital importance to the world. B. The world is a community of shared future. C. Man with strong will can conquer nature. D. Climate change is a tough problem to solve. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Climate change calls for teamwork. B. Sometimes that noise is unavoidable, but there are a few steps you can take to train your bird out of loud or continuous squawking (尖叫). ___16___ Most birds tend to make some noise, either by singing or squawking. Birds tend to be most vocal during waking hours in the morning and before going to sleep in the evening. Some birds are more likely to make noise than others, but understand before bringing a bird home that some noise will be unavoidable. Teach your bird to speak softly. Praise your bird when he whistles or whispers, instead of squawking or yelling. ___17___ It’s often easier to teach them soft- spoken words compared to other types of sounds. Furthermore, it's important to maintain a calm and gentle tone when interacting with your bird. ___18___ Because this could strengthen the behavior you are trying to discourage. Avoid quick movements. It’s possible that you or someone in your household is moving too quickly around your bird, causing him to feel anxious or over-stimulated. ___19___ If you have children living at home, teach them not to run through the room your bird is in. Provide your bird with comfort and security. Birds in the wild participate in “flock calls” as a way of communicating with other birds and ensuring the safety of the flock. If your bird is likely to squawk when you leave the room, it could be his attempt at sending you a flock call. ___20___ A. Understand bird behavior. B. Train your bird to be quiet. C. This may be especially useful for parrots. D. Give him a treat for quietness to earn your love. E. Try squawking back to let him know that you’re safe. F.
