Have you ever wondered how your favorite NBA team received its famous name? All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names show the city’s culture or history, others came from former owners and many were’ selected through “Name the Team” competition.
For teams like Los Angeles and Utah, the names were not always telling anything of the city. Even though Los Angeles has no lakes, the Laker name has been a city treasure for almost 40 years. Before going to Los Angeles, the team was first set up in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1948, team officials chose the name for its close relationship to the state’s motto (格言), “The Land of 10,000 Lakes”. The team name went unchanged after moving to Los Angeles in 1960.
Because Utah’s team was founded in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was called the Jazz.In 1974, New Orleans club officials chose the name to stand for the city since it is known as the “jazz capital of the world”. The name stayed with the team even after finding a new home in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.
The Chicago Bull’s first owner, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is strong and brave, and never quits. Klein, who founded the club in 1966, believed these qualities were necessary for a championship team and hoped his Chicago athletes would live up to the team name. It is a belief that Bulls — winner of the six NBA championships have surely followed.
In 1967, the Indiana Pacers selected their team name in a different way from most other teams. Their decision was based on what they wanted to achieve in the NBA. Team officials chose the Pacers name because the organization wanted to set the “pace” in professional basketball.
1. NBA teams got their names in different ways EXCEPT ______.
A. by telling the culture of a city
B. by choosing from a naming competition
C. by connecting with their former owners
D. by creating stories or histories behind
2. Los Angeles’ team is named “the Laker” because ______.
A. it was named after a city treasure
B. the team officials refused to change it
C. it came from a place with many lakes
D. Los Angeles is famous as a city of lakes
3. Richard Klein named Chicago’ s team “the Bulls” mainly because ______.
A. he had guessed the success of the team
B. qualities of fighting bulls were needed to win
C. Chicago was then a city famous for fighting bulls
D. the team had successfully won six championships

When talking about winter sports, people usually think of ice skating, skiing or snowboarding. Without doubt, these are some of the most popular winter sports, although we can play most of these sports all year round thanks to man-made snow!
Last weekend, I went snowshoeing with a group of teachers from my school. Although I walked in very deep snow almost two years ago, I had never tried snowshoeing before. A snowshoe is, actually, a larger plastic shoe which you fix to your own shoe. The snowshoe increases the surface area of your feet, therefore making you less likely to sink (陷入) in the snow.
At first, it felt a little strange — a bit like wearing flippers (脚蹼) when you swim! I felt quite uncomfortable to start with, and it was difficult to climb over the fallen trees with the snowshoes fixed to my feet. However, I love hiking and am used to walking in mountainous areas so I soon got used to it. I loved walking through the forest and seeing all the trees covered in snow! At times, walking uphill in the snow was hard, especially when there were rocks under the snow. But once we reached the top, it was worth it!The mountain we climbed was called “Le Tanet” and it was 1, 292m high. That’s higher than Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales! The sky was a bit grey, but the views were fantastic. I managed to get some great photos. After that, we started the descent. In some ways, going down the mountain was harder than going up. It was easy to slip in the snow.
At the bottom, we had a hot drink in a small wood house. It was surely needed after a few hours of walking in the cold! Before we went home, I had a go at sledging, which I’d never tried before! It was great fun!
Overall, I’d really suggest snowshoeing as another choice for the more well-known winter sports. Besides being a lot cheaper than skiing, it’s easier and is considered to be a lot safer!
4. How can snowshoes help with walking in deep snow?
A. They look like flippers.
B. They are made of plastic.
C. They are fixed to your own shoes.
D. They keep your feet on the snow surface.
5. What does “the descent” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Going down a higher place. B. Enjoying the photos.
C. Seeing the beautiful scenery. D. Falling down in the snow.
6. What type of writing is this text?
A. A travel guide. B. A winter sports report.
C. A personal experience. D. An advertisement for snowshoeing.

King Tut, Egypt’s famous boy king, was buried with many treasures. A knife discovered in his tomb has recently attracted extra attention. Researchers have found that the knife was probably made from a special material.
King Tut was only about nine years old when he became ruler of Egypt more than 3,300 years ago. The young king died when he was just 19. His body was buried in a tomb filled with things that people believed he would need in the afterlife.
In 1922, Howard Carter discovered Tut’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.Up to now, it is the best preserved ancient Egyptian tomb ever found. In 1925, Carter found the knife which has a gold handle (刀柄) and an iron blade (刀片). The blade had confused experts because iron was hardly used at that time in ancient Egypt. In fact, it was so uncommon that it was considered more valuable than gold. Where did the iron for the blade come from?
Around the time of King Tut, ancient Egyptians started using a new word for iron that translates as “iron from the sky”. This led some experts to believe that the iron for the blade came from a meteorite (陨石). But studies of the knife carried out in the 1970s and 1990s didn’t support that idea.
That’s where modern technology comes in. Researchers used a new technique to examine the blade. They discovered that it was made up of iron and other materials found in meteorites. After comparing it to several meteorites, they even found its possible match — a meteorite that landed in northern Egypt thousands of years ago.
Scientists hope the new study will lead to more discoveries about other ancient Egyptian relics. “It would be very interesting to analyze more Pre - iron Age relics and we could gain precious discoveries.” Professor Daniela Comelli said.
7. What do we know about Tut’s tomb?
A. It was well kept when discovered.
B. It was built when he became a ruler.
C. It was filled with lots of iron products.
D. It was the first Egyptian tomb to be found.
8. Scientists pay extra attention to the knife because it ______.
A. has a gold handle B. has an iron blade
C. leads to more discoveries D. is more valuable than gold
9. What plays the most important role in deciding the source of the iron?
A The belief of some experts. B. The use of modern technology.
C. The former studies of the knife. D. The ancient Egyptian word for iron.
10. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell a story of a knife. B. To attract visitors to Egypt.
C To report a scientific finding. D. To introduce an Egyptian boy king.

由“I made up my mind to apologize to Mr. White”可知,句子表示“意识到自己的错误后,我决定向Mr. White道歉”,空格处意为“意识到”,是固定短语be aware of,句中谓语是made,空格处用非谓语动词,I和be aware of之间是主谓关系,因此be动词用现在分词作伴随状语,即being aware of,位于句首的单词首字母要大写,故填Being aware of。
由“If you want to know the meaning of this word”可知,句子表示“如果你想知道这个词的意思,你可以查字典”,空格处意为“查阅”,是固定短语refer to,may是情态动词,其后跟动词原形,故填refer to。
由“are still under threat”和“illegal hunting has been stopped”可知,句子表示“即使非法狩猎已经停止,许多大象仍然受到威胁”,前后句有转折关系,用连词even if引导让步状语从句,故填even if。
______ she quickly made some new friends.
It was because she was outgoing that
强调句的基本结构是“It is/was +被强调部分+ that/who +其他部分”。“因为她外向”翻译为because she was outgoing,句中强调原因状语。故填It was because she was outgoing that。
Only when we better understand nature _______.
【答案】can we live in harmony with it.
和谐共处”可使用短语“live in harmony with sth.”“我们才能与自然和谐共处”可翻译为“we can live in harmony with it”结合部分倒装的形式,故此句可翻译为:can we live in harmony with it。
The movie is ______ the tickets ______ till now.
【答案】 ①. so popular that ②. have been sold out
故填so popular that;have been sold out。
With _______, we _______to learn English.
【答案】 ①. time going by ②. think it more and more interesting
结合语意,time (时间)是go by (推移)的发出者,所以此处表示“随着时间流逝”应为“With time going by”。think it adj. to do sth. 故填①time going by ②think it more and more interesting。
Our teacher recommends that _______the competition _______a lot.
【答案】 ①. we take part in ②. from which we can benefit
故第一空可填we take part in,第二空填from which we can benefit。

Hi, everyone! I’m a senior one student. My happiest moment in senior high school was when I joined the school English drama club. I’ve always been into English and acting. During the preparation for our first show, I worked closely with my clubmates. We spent hours discussing the script, practicing our lines, and perfecting our acting skills. When we finally performed in front of the whole school and received thundering applause, the sense of achievement was beyond words.
However, my biggest problem is the heavy academic pressure. There are so many subjects to learn and tons of homework to do. Sometimes, I feel really stressed out. To deal with it, I’ve started to manage my time more effectively. I make a detailed schedule every day, setting aside specific time for each subject. Also, I take short breaks during study to relax. I believe as long as I keep a good balance, I can overcome this problem.
