When my daughter was born, the doctor told me she was a little girl, and I was so happy because I had always dreamed of having a daughter. But, sadly, my daughter had white, soft hairs all over her body. She had a special condition called albinism (白化病), which is something she was born with.
During National Day holiday this year, I took my daughter Elsa to Beijing. One day, after getting off the subway, Elsa noticed a lady with white hair dressed like a character from a game. Elsa really liked her because she looked so unique.
A little later, we met a man wearing a white wig who pretended to be a character from a popular game. He took our picture while I was taking a photo of Elsa with the lady. He told us about a fun event next day where lots of people would dress up and have colorful hair. I wrote down the address of the event.
When we got there the next day, it felt like a whole new world. Elsa was amazed by all the people with green, blue and pink hair. At first, Elsa was a bit shy, but soon she started posing for photos with many people, especially those with white hair. We even took a picture with a lady dressed like Queen Elsa from the movie Frozen, which is also Elsa's nickname.
A video of Elsa at the event became very popular online. After reading the comments, I learned more about people who like to dress up like characters. The event was so pretty, and I wished I had taken more photos. It was easy to see why people enjoy these events—— all of them look happy and are being their true selves.
I felt very happy to see Elsa getting so many nice comments. I told her to thank people herself when they said she was cute. Everyone loved taking photos with her and didn't ask any questions. The friendly and welcome atmosphere made Elsa feel great, and it was a fun day for both of us.

The Leatherback Turtle: As Big as a Small Car
The leatherback turtle is the biggest sea turtle. It can grow as big as a small car and weigh more than 100 kg!
Unlike other sea turtles, the leatherback turtles don't have hard shells. Instead, they have soft, rubbery coverings. They are really tough and can swim in very cold water and div e down to a depth of over 1,200 meters.
Being Social
Leatherback turtles like to be alone most of the time and don't often meet other turtles, except when it's time to mate. Unlike some other sea turtles that like to be with others, leatherback turtles spend most of the time in the open ocean, looking for food and traveling long distances by themselves.
But during the nesting season, female leatherback turtles come back to the same warm beaches where they were born. These beaches become very busy as the females dig holes and lay their eggs. This is one of the few times these usually lonely turtles come together.
What They Eat
Leatherback turtles love jellyfish and eat them almost all the time. This makes them different from other sea turtles, like the ones that eat plants or both plants and animals.
Leatherback turtles have special spikes in their throat. These spikes can help leatherback turtles hold onto the slippery jellyfish so they can't escape.
Eating jellyfish is important for the ocean because it helps keep jellyfish's numbers in check. But eating jellyfish also puts leatherback turtles in danger from plastic bags. If they mistake plastic bags as jellyfish, their stomachs may be blocked and they may be killed.
13. What is special about the leatherback turtle?
A. It has a hard shell. B. It can grow as big as a small car.
C. It prefers to live in cold rivers. D. It only eats jellyfish and plants.

A. In the open ocean. B. In shallow waters near beaches.
C. On warm nesting beaches. D. In the river.
15. What can help leatherback turtles hold onto the slippery jellyfish?
A. Their strong legs. B. Their sharp claws.
C. Special spikes in their throat. D. Their large size and weight.
16. What can we know about female leatherback turtles during the nesting season?
A. They come to the beaches to lay eggs.
B. They prefer to nest on the cold beaches.
C. There are few female leatherback turtles on the beach during the nesting season.
D. They are more active during the day than at night.

Imagine this: You pick up your phone for a video call with a friend. Not only can you see their face and hear their voice, but you can also smell the cookies they just baked. 17
When you listen to music or talk to someone on your phone, you can hear the sound through the built-in speakers. These speakers turn digital signals (数字信号) into physical vibrations(震动). Your ears sense those vibrations as sound waves.
18 The screen uses tiny dots known as pixels(像素) that have three primary colors: red, green and blue. By mixing these colors in different ways, your phone can show you everything.
Now, how about the sense of smell? Smells are created by molecules(分子) that float through the air and reach your nose. 19
Could your phone send these smell molecules to you? Scientists are working on it. They are developing digital smell technology that uses a small number of different cartridges (墨盒), each containing a unique smell. These smell cartridges could be mixed to create different smells.
This mix would be released through the phone, allowing you to smell it. With just a few cartridges, your phone could potentially create a kind of smell. Researchers and companies are already working on digital smell makers like this. 20
A. Maybe one day you' ll be able to not only see and hear your friends over the phone but also smell the cakes they make!
B. It sounds like something out of science fiction, but could it really happen?
C. Your nose then sends signals to your brain, which recognizes the smells.
D. Your phone also has a screen that displays pictures and videos.
E. The speakers on your phone are much better than those on a regular radio.

I'd like to talk about my grandpa who has a great influence on me throughout my life.
For a start, he taught me to 21 keep optimistic towards life. He joined the army and fought for our country at the age of 15. The war was cruel. He got several 22 wounds and left some scars. I knew this fact when I was a primary school student living with my grandparents during summer vacations. When I asked about the wounds, my grandpa told lots of 23 stories about them. He was a super storyteller, depicting the stories in an exciting way. I definitely got obsessed with those stories, but at that moment I didn't have any clue about how tough the life was for an underage guy to live. But he 24 the difficulties, and he told me that the only belief he held at that time was his steadfast conviction of a happy life after the war. That was exactly what he always told his offsprings, so whenever I got discouraged by my schoolwork or 25 about life, I recalled my grandpa's words— got over it, and moved on.
Another thing that my grandpa influences me most is his spirit of keeping learning new things.Compared with some older people 26 got used to a typical retired life, my grandpa made a 27 choice to learn to use the smartphone and chat with family members via social network applications. It didn't take him long to get the hang of it and when he did, he got to know a lot more about hot issues than his peers did. If you talked to him, you wouldn't feel like talking to an old person, but to one of your friends at the 28 age. Although he learned things much more slowly than we did, he still kept trying and never gave up. I think it's totally cool and respectful.
From my grandpa,I learned the optimistic attitude towards life 29 the desire to try and learn new things. For a young man, when things get screwed up, or we think life has betrayed us,do we really have to give it up and think we are doomed? Thinking about my grandpa, I know the 30 is a definite“NO”.

For ten days in September, 2024, workers at a big power plant in eastern China had a big problem: jellyfish! These tiny creatures blocked the plant's cooling systems, which could have stopped it from working.
At the Zheneng Jiaxing Power Plant, workers took turns cleaning up millions of jellyfish. Even after removing over 150 tons, more kept coming. The bags of jellyfish filled up and smelled bad. Workers had to pick each one off the filters by hand, which was very slow and hard.
Xi Chao, who helps run the plant's repairs, said they'd never seen anything like this before. These jellyfish are a popular food in China, but this year there were too many. While people were excited, the power plant was in trouble.
On September 18th, so many jellyfish blocked the plant's pump station and it shut down a generator. Workers had to do over 100 emergency repairs because of the jellyfish.
Other power stations in nearby Shanghai also had jellyfish problems. Even other countries like Japan and the UK have had similar issues.
Experts said jellyfish appearing more often is a sign of changes in the world's environment. With too many nutrients in the sea and not enough fish, jellyfish can grow and spread, causing problems everywhere.
41. What blocked the cooling systems of the power plant in eastern China?
42. How did the workers clean up the jellyfish?
43. When did the jellyfish block the plant's pump station?
44. What can we do to prevent similar problems from happening again? Write 30 words or more.
