Sunita Kumari Chaudhary quietly weaves (编织) together lengths of rope, mixing them with grass collected from the riverbank in her village of Dang. She skillfully shapes the materials into a nice box. As she weaves, she’s teaching a small group of women how to work with the materials.
The ropes that Chaudhary and the others are using were once the lifeline for mountain climbers in Nepal’s mountains and were then tossed. The waste, including the ropes, is now finding new life, turned by skilled hands like Chaudhary’s into items to sell such as boxes and table mats (垫子).
“At first, I didn’t know that these ropes were collected from the mountains,” Chaudhary says as she expertly weaves a blue-colored rope into a heart-shaped box. To her left, a box she made in the same way holds her tools — scissors and metal nails. On the floor are several mats she made, each a mix of golden yellow, purple and blue. “Later, I learned that the ropes were collected during a mountain cleaning project. And people like me, who are far from the mountains, are using our traditional skills to turn this waste into something totally new,” she said.
The Himalayan mountains have been increasingly filled with waste left by mountaineering activities over the years. According to Nepal’s Department of Tourism, on Mt. Everest alone, there is nearly 140.000 tons of waste. In 2019, the government started the project Safa Himal Aviyan led by the Nepal Army. Waste collected from the project is either sent to a landfill if it’s biodegradable (可降解的) or reused if not. Now some of that material is finding its way to the locals like Chaudhary, thanks to the action.
24. How does Chaudhary deal with the collected ropes?
A. She repurposes them. B. She sells them at a market.
C. She repaints them. D. She sends them to a landfill.
25. Which is the closest in meaning to “tossed” in paragraph 2?
A. Picked up. B. Held back. C. Thrown away. D. Checked out.
26. Why did the government start the project?
A. To offer well-paid jobs. B. To clean up the mountains.
C. To practice traditional skills. D. To help foreign tourists.
27. What can we learn about Chaudhary?
A. She used to be a teacher. B. She joined the army in 2019.
C. She sets up the project. D. She is skillful and creative.

It usually takes a generation or two to measure the full effects of changes in technology and the influence that these changes have on our lives
We have just gone through another industrial revolution (变革) with the creation of the Internet. You wouldn’t know life before the Internet, but it is very different now. Just like when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have known what life was like before television. However, the fact is that we are seeing what is happening now before our very eyes. It is all mostly good, but some of it has a bad influence as well.
The past years has seen the rise of social media as the source of communication and information. Our little handheld phones have become our window to the world round the clock where people can share experiences with others all around the planet.
But as with most things, we have seen the downsides of social media. The spreading of false news, online bullying (欺凌), and unpleasant images are just some of the downsides.
We are seeing young people losing themselves in their screens by checking things on social media or having thoughts of self-harm. Older generations say “just turn off the phone”, but they don’t realize that young people are conditioned to live in that online world and it is impossible to turn it off.
That is why the government is now looking for the prevention by different means. And one of them is raising the age limits for social media users. But how would that work? I find it fun to think that my older Boomer generation is going to try to block social media access and outsmart these teens. We know who will win that one! But as I said at the start, we are seeing the effects of this technology after a couple of generations and we need to do something about it.
28. What is the author’s opinion about the revolution caused by the Internet?
A. It will last for a short time. B. It has more bad influences.
C. We can do nothing about it. D. We can see it shaping our life.
29. What is an advantage of mobile phones according to the text?
A. They make it easy to travel alone. B. They are quite cheap.
C. They keep us connected at all times. D. They create new ideas.
30. What does the author want to show by mentioning online bullying?
A. The serious health risk. B. The danger of social media.
C. The mistakes students make. D. The false news on the Internet.
31. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Other harm prevention measures. B. The reason why we take action.
C. Parents’doubts about social media. D. The role the Internet can play.

The monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) population has dropped to its second-lowest number on record in Mexican forests this winter. The forests are the insects’ (昆虫) winter home. Their population is now worrisome as the butterfly group is already considered at risk of disappearance.
Mexico’s government and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently made public the findings of their yearly joint study on the butterflies. The research shows that the monarch butterfly presence has dropped to less than a hectare of forest area. In the mid-1990s, monarch butterflies could be found on around 18 hectares of the forest.
The findings show an almost 60 percent drop in the monarch butterfly population compared to last year’s study. It is also the second-lowest population finding since the first study took place more than thirty years ago.
Biologists believe the serious situation is caused by the higher-than-usual temperatures and dry conditions in the northwestern US where the butterfly reproduces. The weather conditions have an influence on the growth of milkweed, the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs. When the young arrive, milkweed is their food for a time.
In one of the planet’s famous wildlife migrations (迁徙), the butterflies travel south as far as 4,500 kilometers from places as far north as Canada. They spend the winter in warmer Mexico, where millions of the insects stay in trees that protect them from the rain and cold.
Monarch butterfly populations change year to year. As recently as 2021, the same study showed a 35% increase to cover around 2.8 hectares. Scientists called for more action to help the insects. Such calls included the need to use less herbicides that may present a danger to milkweed and the need to protect forests. “We can’t lower our guard,” said Jorge Rickards, head of WWF’s Mexico office.
32. How does hot weather influence the monarch butterflies?
A. They fly to as far as Canada. B. They likely have less to eat.
C. They stop living in tall trees. D. They have to feed more babies.
33. We can know that Mexican forests in winter ________.
A. are free from rain B. are full of tourists
C. are rich in wildlife D. are often very cold
34. What do scientists suggest about monarch butterflies?
A. Taking more steps to protect them. B. Stopping them eating more leaves.
C. Studying them as much as possible. D. Checking their number quickly.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A New-found Insect in Mexican Forests
B. The Purpose of the World Wildlife Fund
C. The Secret of Monarch Butterflies’ Travel
D. A Big Fall in Monarch Butterfly Population

On a cold December morning, our school charity club planned a winter donation activity for homeless kids. As the leader, I first thought it was just another school activity for my future applications. But everything changed when I first met Leo at a shelter. There the wall was dirty and broken, and most kids’ books and clothes were broken too. Leo’s broken shoes and thin jacket caught my attention. While giving out donations, I saw him drawing a sunflower with a short pencil. “I want to be an artist.” he said quietly. His words stayed with me all night.
The next day, I suggested holding an art show featuring drawings from shelter kids like Leo and encouraged them to explain their drawings. We could sell their artworks to buy school supplies for them. Some club members worried it was too much work, but Leo’s hopeful eyes kept me going.
After weeks of preparation, we turned the school hall into an art gallery (画廊). 50 colorful drawings from the kids at the shelter covered the walls and filled up the shelves with Leo’s sunflower painting “Growing Hope” in the center. Many students and teachers as visitors joined this activity. During the event, laughter and conversation filled the room. Just as Leo started to explain his painting, we heard a loud crash-two younger kids had accidentally knocked over a shelf, tearing (撕碎) several drawings! The room fell silent. My heart sank until Leo calmly picked up those torn paintings.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
“These remind me of my pencil and tape (胶带).” he said, holding up his half-broken tools.

Leo’s reaction inspired our club to start a repair project, where we showed the kids at the shelter how to make beautiful things from broken ones.

M: You’ve never celebrated Christmas in all the years you’ve lived in the US? Plus, don’t people celebrate Christmas in Morocco?
W: Every year I’ve lived in the US, I’ve been too busy with work. Some people celebrate it back home in Morocco, but my family only followed our culture’s traditional holidays.
M: Well, I can’t wait to show you that. But you’ll have to accept staying in a crowded Manhattan apartment instead of a snowy country house with a yard.
W: Sounds fun, but how crowded? And my biggest dream for Christmas is to see snow.
M: Hopefully, we will! There will be eight other people there. Plus, the two of us.
W: I feel bad that I can’t help your parents cook. Will we go out to do activities as a group?
M: Our Christmas activities are at home. Our favorites are watching Christmas films and singing songs. After that, you and I will explore the city together.

M: You’re about to finish high school, and I want to explain what I did when I was your age. I was lucky, at that time, that your grandfather was so supportive. My father always firmly believed in me — the same way that I believe in you. That’s why, after graduating from high school in New York, your grandparents sent me on a trip to Asia to learn more about life. I landed in India as a fresh-faced 18-year-old kid with endless curiosity about the world. There, I worked at a school in exchange for food and a place to stay. Although I didn’t earn any money, I was happy and learned so much about life. From there, I flew to Australia and got my first job. This position wasn’t an office job or anything fancy. I painted houses in the sun for 12 hours a day. I’m telling you this story not to encourage you to have a similar experience, but to inspire you to do as much as you can in your teens and early 20’s. You’ll be glad you did.

It usually takes a generation or two to measure the full effects of changes in technology and the influence that these changes have on our lives.
Our little handheld phones have become our window to the world round the clock, where people can share experiences with others all around the planet.
D 29. C 30. B 31. A

You wouldn’t know life before the Internet, but it is very different now. Just like when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have known what life was like before television. However, the fact is that we are seeing what is happening now before our very eyes.
根据第三段中的“Our little handheld phones have become our window to the world round the clock, where people can share experiences with others all around the planet. (我们的小手机已经成为我们全天候与世界交流的窗口,人们可以在这里与世界各地的其他人分享经验。)”可知,手机可以让我们随时与世界保持联络。故选C。

【31题详解】

But as I said at the start, we are seeing the effects of this technology after a couple of generations and we need to do something about it. 故选A。

B 33. C 34. A 35. D

根据第四段“Biologists believe the serious situation is caused by the higher-than-usual temperatures and dry conditions in the northwestern US where the butterfly reproduces. The weather conditions have an influence on the growth of milkweed, the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs. When the young arrive, milkweed is their food for a time. (生物学家认为,这种严重的情况是由于蝴蝶繁殖的美国西北部气温高于正常水平和干燥条件造成的。天气条件会影响马利筋的生长,马利筋是蝴蝶产卵的地方。当幼崽出生时,马利筋是它们的食物。)”可推断,高温天气可能会导致帝王蝶的食物减少。故选B。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“They spend the winter in warmer Mexico, where millions of the insects stay in trees that protect them from the rain and cold. (它们在温暖的墨西哥过冬,在那里数以百万计的昆虫呆在树上,保护它们免受雨水和寒冷。)”可知,冬日的墨西哥森林生机盎然。故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Scientists called for more action to help the insects. Such calls included the need to use less herbicides that may present a danger to milkweed and the need to protect forests. (科学家们呼吁采取更多行动来帮助昆虫。这些呼吁包括需要减少使用可能对马利筋构成危险的除草剂,以及需要保护森林。)”可知,科学家建议采取更多措施保护帝王蝶。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“The monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) population has dropped to its second-lowest number on record in Mexican forests this winter. (今年冬天,在墨西哥的森林里,帝王蝶的数量已经下降到有记录以来的第二低水平。)”和第二段中的“Mexico’s government and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently made public the findings of their yearly joint study on the butterflies. The research shows that the monarch butterfly presence has dropped to less than a hectare of forest area. (墨西哥政府和世界自然基金会(WWF)最近公布了他们对蝴蝶的年度联合研究结果。研究表明,帝王蝶的存在已经下降到不到一公顷的森林面积。)”可知,本文主要介绍了一项科研结果——墨西哥政府和世界自然基金会共同开展的一项研究发现帝王蝶数量急剧下降。最佳标题为“A Big Fall in Monarch Butterfly Population (帝王蝶数量大幅下降)”。故选D。

Leo’s reaction inspired our club to start a repair project, where we showed the kids at the shelter how to make beautiful things from broken ones.

“These remind me of my pencil and tape (胶带),” he said, holding up his half-broken tools. Leo’s words made everyone smile. Leo started fixing the torn drawings with his pencil and tape, turning them into colorful patterns. Everyone helped. Soon, the hall was lively again. Visitors clapped as the repaired artworks became even more special. By the end, all artworks were sold. We raised enough money to buy new school supplies for the kids at the shelter. But what touched us most wasn’t the money raised — it was how Leo turned broken art into something new.
Leo’s reaction inspired our club to start a repair project, where we showed the kids at the shelter how to make beautiful things from broken ones. We taught them to fix old books and turn very old clothes into colorful bags. Months later, visiting the shelter again, I saw the walls that used to be dirty and broken were repaired and even decorated with kids’ bright paintings. That winter I learned that charity isn’t just about giving things; it’s about helping people find their hidden talents. Just like Leo’s sunflower painting “Growing Hope” shows us, even a little bit of kindness can make a big difference and go much farther than we think.
