Fans will be seeing a purple track (跑道) at the Olympics when athletes (运动员) try to set records at this summer’s Paris Games. The Olympics used to choose red-brick clay color (砖红色). An Olympic track is going purple for the first time.
“The look of the Games includes three colors for all the competition places: blue, green and purple. We decided on this purple track with different tones(色调) : lighter for the track, darker for the service areas, and grey for the turns at the end of the corner,” said Alain Blondel, the sports manager (经理), who added that the choice of the color reminds us of lavender (薰衣草).
This purple color, never seen before for an athletics track, has been the result of a long process but it doesn’t have to be just beautiful. “We had to work hard on the colors so that they came out in the best possible tones to highlight (突出) the athletes. It’s a track and it has to be pretty, but above all it’s a stage (舞台) on which the athletes are going to perform. What’s really important is that the colors and the athletes stand out,” said Alain Blondel.
Different colors can lead to different emotions and feelings. For example, red makes people feel excited; blue helps lower stress, while purple has some of the good points of both red and blue, which can encourage athletes to perform at their best and help them bring good results.
Many athletes in the world will compete on the beautiful purple track at the Paris Olympics from August 1st-11th 2024.

Today, many people celebrate (庆祝) birthdays in the same way. There’s a birthday cake, balloons, candles, and maybe some gifts. Do you know how and where these birthday celebrations started?
Birthday cake
The link (联系) between cakes and birthday celebrations may start in ancient Roman times (古罗马时代). In the 15th century, Germans (德国人) began to spread (传播) the idea of eating cakes on birthdays, and then birthday cake was born.
Birthday candles
Some people think that the history of putting candles on a cake began in ancient Greece (古希腊). People put candles on a cake to show their love for the moon goddess (女神), Artemis. They made round cakes and put candles on the cake to make it glow (发亮) like the moon. Then they made wishes before blowing out the candles. They thought that the smoke (烟雾) from the candles could bring their wishes to the gods and goddesses. Today, many think that the birthday person must make a wish before blowing out the candles. If they blow out all the candles in one go, the wish will come true.
Birthday song
If there’s one thing that lets someone know it’s your birthday, it’s the Happy Birthday Song. So where did the song come from? People think the song’s melody (旋律) came from a school teacher’s greeting song called Good Morning to All. American sisters Mildred and Patty Hill wrote it in 1893.

12 Countries like France, Brazil and even Japan have their own hip-hop culture. But where did this strange speaking-singing style come from?
Many centuries ago, in West Africa, traditional storytellers played musical instruments while they were telling stories. When this tradition travelled from West Africa to the USA, it developed into different musical styles. For example, blues and jazz. 13 And in the 1970s, there were many poor areas in New York. There wasn’t any money for music lessons in schools, so kids made their own music. Teenagers Africa and DJ Here played their records outside in the streets. Everybody joined in. MCs had rapping (说唱) competitions. Every week, there were talented new dancers, new DJs and new MCs. Hip-hop culture was born.
14 It was 1980. I was at a party in New York. There was a young DJ at the party. He was playing records. While he was putting a record on, a kid picked up a microphone (话筒) and began tapping. Some other kids were break-dancing to the music. It was loud and boring, and I hated it. I preferred jazz.
15 Today’s successful American artists like Missy and her friend Tim heard it on the radio when they were growing up.
The last time I heard hip-hop, I was in West Africa. I was going to interview a traditional storyteller when I met a young hip-hop artist. He told me there are hundreds of rap groups in Africa today. We live on a hip-hop planet.
A.I remember the first time I heard hip-hop.
B.You can find hip-hop everywhere you go.

Clothes Donation (捐赠) Box
Have you ever put your old clothes into the donation box in your neighborhood? If not, you can do it right now because the clothes donation is becoming a trend (趋势) in Urumqi (乌鲁木齐).
“From time to time, my mother clears out the clothes which I no longer wear. You know, we teenagers are growing fast. I think it’s a good way to help others.” Lin Tao, a junior student says.
“I often pick out some of my clothes which are out of style after going shopping. Then I’ll put them into the donation box.” Miss Li, a pretty young lady says.
“That seems like a good idea. Some clothes in the box are quite new. People can either wear them or use them to make things such as handbags and pencil cases.” Mrs. Wang, an old woman says, “Sometimes I also look through the box for some nice clothes.”
However, there are some problems along with the popularity of clothes donation. Recently, a UTV reporter from Focus on the City has made a survey. Here are the results:
◆The box is full of clothes in a short time. There is no more room for people to give away clothes.
◆Some people sell the clothes in the donation box for making money instead of wearing them.
◆Some communities set the box in unsuitable places, so there are few clothes in it.
◆Many clothes are too old and shabby (破烂的).
“What’s worse.” one of the workers in a community added, “we quite often see people throw rubbish into the box when they pass by. We’ve tried to stop them several times but failed. It has been the most serious problem since we set the box.”
In order to make the donation box work in a useful way, our government is taking action. Clothes donation will be better-organized and it’ll be more convenient for people in need to take the clothes away.

C.I was writing a book about African-Americans.
D.These styles all started in poor African-American areas.
E.During the 1980s, hip-hop became popular all over the USA.

36.What does Lin Tao think of the Clothes Donation Box?
37.Why does Miss Li give away her clothes?
38.What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refer to?
39.How many problems are mentioned (提到) about the donation box?
40.Do you think the donation box is good? Why or why not?
