An educator with a passion for getting children emotionally invested in saving the ice caps gave a lesson to students as a polar bear stayed on his shoulder. The bear seemed to say “hi” to them about climate change.
Gavin McCormack is trying to bring the “amazing natural phenomena” to the fingertips of children in an attempt to get them to help stop rising sea levels and become passionate about climate change, which is threatening the home of polar bears.
The primary school teacher decided to jump headfirst into his teachings and spent ten days on an icebreaker heading towards the North Pole. On the first day at sea, a polar bear climbed out of the water right in front of him and onto an island where it was attacked by a group of Arctic terns
“Each day is different but so interesting,” McCormack said. “This week, my dream to teach children about the wonder of a polar bear with one right over my shoulder came true.”
The most memorable moment for him while in the Arctic was when his ship reached the pack ice. The ship crunched (嘎吱地响) through the ice as they reached 82 degrees north and the noise was deafening. Earlier this week he launched his new course “Be the Change”, which is free to all schools nationwide. “Be the Change” is designed to empower children, families and communities around the world to bring about changes and make global impacts. “It takes a course-related approach to improve the world in meaningful ways,” Mr. McCormack said.
McCormack hopes to teach the “leaders of tomorrow” to include nature and the climate in every decision they make. He is planning another course named “It Starts With You” with the hopes of bringing purposeful education to as many children as possible.
“Working alongside teachers, schools and students, we believe that when children are empowered to make real choices about the future, the skills for life are developed not through listening to what others tell them, but through experience,” McCormack said.
4. Why did McCormack head to the North Pole?
A. To observe an amazing natural sight.
B. To measure the rate of sea level rise.
C. To save polar bears from extinction.
D. To educate children in a real situation.
5. What can we learn about polar bears according to the text?
A. They are friendly towards human beings.
B. Arctic terns are their natural enemies.
C. Climate change causes the loss of their habitats.
D. Hunger drives them out of water for food.
6. What does “Be the Change” aim to do?
A. To make a difference in improving the world.
B. To change people’s decision-making methods.
C. To teach students to think twice before making choices.
D. To develop students’ life skills through experience.
7. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Climate Change — A Worldwide Concern.
B. New Ways of Teaching About Climate Change.
C. Join Hands and Say No to Global Warming.
D. An Interesting Trip to the North Pole.
D 5. C 6. A 7. B
根据文章第二段“Gavin McCormack is trying to bring the “amazing natural phenomena” to the fingertips of children in an attempt to get them to help stop rising sea levels and become passionate about climate change, which is threatening the home of polar bears.(Gavin McCormack正试图把“神奇的自然现象”带到孩子们的指尖,试图让他们帮助阻止海平面上升,并对气候变化充满热情,气候变化正威胁着北极熊的家园。)”
根据文章第五段“Earlier this week he launched his new course “Be the Change”, which is free to all schools nationwide. “Be the Change” is designed to empower children, families and communities around the world to bring about changes and make global impacts.(本周早些时候,他开设了一门名为“Be the Change”的新课程,对全国所有学校免费开放。“Be the Change”旨在赋予世界各地的儿童、家庭和社区带来改变并产生全球影响的能力。)”可知,“Be the Change”的目的是给世界各地的儿童、家庭和社区带来改变并产生全球影响。故选A。
根据文章第一段“An educator with a passion for getting children emotionally invested in saving the ice caps gave a lesson to students as a polar bear stayed on his shoulder. The bear seemed to say “hi” to them about climate change.(一位热衷于让孩子们投入到拯救冰盖的教育工作者给学生们上了一堂课,一只北极熊站在他的肩膀上。熊似乎对他们说讲述了关于气候变化。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了教育者McCormack通过自己的行动和课程,向孩子们传授有关自然和环境的知识,并鼓励他们成为改变世界的领导者,也就是文章主要讲述了气候变化教学的新方法。故选B。
C
For most of human history, we have been very good observers because we had to be. We used all of our senses—touch, smell, taste, hearing, and sight—to detect and discern. The sudden sounds of animals or the running of birds warned us that someone was approaching. At a distance, by examining posture, way of walking, arms wing, clothing, and equipment, our ancestors could discern friend from foe (敌人).
As generations evolved and eventually moved to cities, closeness changed how we viewed and assessed each other. Because everyone was so close, we had less time to observe. Close quarters and circumstances demanded we interact on first meeting rather than later. This was the opposite of what we had done for thousands of years, which was to assess first at a distance and then interact. Closeness also made us more sensitive to being observed, which is why we are uncomfortable when others stare at us.
Have we allowed ourselves to become careless when it comes to our own safety and that of our loved ones? I see people distracted while driving (applying makeup or texting). Or someone knocks at the front door and we open it without first seeing who is there and asking what they want. Perhaps, in an attempt to be polite, we have ended our responsibility to ourselves, and each other, to be good observers.
We should all look around and listen to our inner voice, which is in fact the limbic (边缘的) brain telling us to be careful that something is wrong, as security special it Gavin de Becker pointed out in The Gift of Fear, So often, after an encounter or a relationship turns problematic, one hears, “You know I had a feeling, in the beginning, that something wasn’t right.”
However failure to observe, if we are honest, leads to avoidable circumstances as well as accidents, How we feel about something often completes the picture so that we can fully understand it Anyway, it is never too late to start observing. Observation is not about being judgmental, it is not about good or bad. It is about seeing the world around you, having situational awareness, and interpreting what it is that others are communication both verbally and nonverbally. To observe is to see but also to understand, and that requires listening to how you feel.
8. What does the underlined word “discern” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Disclose. B. Discover. C. Distinguish. D. Disguise.
9. Why did we spend less time observing?
A. Observing involves too much and is complicated.
B. We felt uneasy when others were staring at us.
C. We got more sensitive to others’ observation.
D. Closeness required people to communicate on first meeting.
10. Possibly for what have we given up being good observers?
A. Being careless. B. Avoiding rudeness.
C. Paying no attention. D. Being irresponsible.
11. What is the best title?
A. Be good observers. B. Discern friend from foe.
C. Care about our safety. D. Start observing now.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A
根据上文“We used all of our senses—touch, smell, taste, hearing, and sight—to detect and discern.(我们用我们所有的感官——触觉、嗅觉、味觉、听觉和视觉——来探测和辨别。)”
根据文章第二段“As generations evolved and eventually moved to cities, closeness changed how we viewed and assessed each other. Because everyone was so close, we had less time to observe. Close quarters and circumstances demanded we interact on first meeting rather than later.(随着世代的演变,人们最终迁移到城市,人与人之间的亲近改变了我们看待和评估彼此的方式。因为每个人都靠得很近,所以我们没有那么多时间去观察。狭小的空间和环境要求我们第一次见面就进行互动,而不是等到以后。)”可知,我们花费更少的时间观察是因为距离上的拉近要求我们第一次见面就进行交流。故选D。
10. 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Perhaps, in an attempt to be polite, we have ended our responsibility to ourselves, and each other, to be good observers.(也许,为了表示礼貌,我们放弃了对自己和他人作为优秀观察者的责任。)”
故选A。
D
Adults tend to have stronger cognitive, social and emotional skills, which allow them to better identify with, offer advice to, and otherwise support friends. Many young adults enjoy this emotional depth along with an abundance of free time before family and career responsibilities pick up in midlife. It’s no wonder that this age is a high-water mark for friendship. Those who go to college get a few extra years of living near their peers. Later in adulthood, though, people have more demands on their time: work, romantic partnership, and caregiving all compete for their attention.
Plus, when adults enter the workforce full-time, potential new friends don’t constantly surround them the way they did in school or while living in dormitories. Though some continue to carve out time for their social lives. Bagwell said, friendship tends to become “a luxury rather than priority.”
Under these new circumstances, many people see friends less frequently — and they tend to spend the time they do have together differently. For efficiency’s sake, they might pair socializing with other activities, like sharing a meal. Though grabbing dinner with a friend can be engaging, it’s a far cry from well-planned forest ceremonies. Friends could choose to tell each other secrets at a meal, but the activity doesn’t bring about the type of natural openness that play can.
This pursuit of efficiency and the safety of following routine can come at the cost of pleasure. An efficiency mindset risks having friendships feel like making a trade, as if each meeting should be “worth it.” But squeezing time for short and rare meetings is unlikely to feel fulfilling. If you haven’t seen each other in a while, focusing on chatting about old days is natural. However, looking back on important events in life can feel like exchanging notes while joint adventures create memories—the foundation of close friendship. As the sociologist Eric Klinenberg put it, “You tend to enrich your social life when you stop, stay longer and waste time.”
12. Why do young adults possess the deeper friendship?
A. They pay their whole attention to making friends.
B. They have more demands on maintaining friendship.
C. They enjoy developing friendship with enormous people.
D. They take advantage of skills and time to keep friendship.
13. What does Bagwell say about friendship of adults working full-time?
A. They consider it tough to keep friendship.
B. They place great emphasis on making friends.
C. They have a preference for staying with friends.
D. They spend a large amount of money connecting with friends.
14. What does the author think of well-planned forest ceremonies in paragraph 3?
A. They are efficient and engaging activities.
B. Friends get more natural pleasure from them.
C. It is necessary to see friends frequently in them.
D. It takes a long time to make preparations for them.
15. What’s Eric Klinenberg’s attitude towards efficiency-based socializing?
A. Ambiguous. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Approving.
D 13. A 14. B 15. C
根据第一段“Adults tend to have stronger cognitive. social and emotional skills, which allow them to better identify with, offer advice to, and otherwise support friends. Many young adults enjoy this emotional depth along with an abundance of free time.(成年人往往具有更强的认知、社交和情感技能,让他们能够更好地认同朋友,向朋友提供建议并支持他们。很多年轻人拥有充裕的空闲时间享受这种情感深度。)”可知,年轻的成年人有能力和时间维持友谊。故选D。
13. 推理判断题。根据第二段“Plus, when adults enter the workforce full-time, potential new friends don’t constantly surround them the way they did in school or while living in dormitories. Though some continue to carve out time for their social lives. Bagwell said, friendship tends to become “a luxury rather than priority.”(此外,当成年人进入职场全职工作时,潜在的新朋友不会像在学校或住宿舍时那样经常围绕在他们身边。尽管有些人继续为他们的社交生活腾出时间。巴格韦尔说,友谊往往成为“奢侈品而非优先事项”。)”可知,进入全职工作的成年人没有时间去结交朋友,友谊成了奢饰品,所以维持友谊变得非常困难。故选A。
根据第三段的“Though grabbing dinner with a friend can be engaging, it’s a far cry from well-planned forest ceremonies. Friends could choose to tell each other secrets at a meal, but the activity doesn’t bring about the type of natural openness that play can.(虽然与朋友共进晚餐可能很吸引人,但这与精心策划的森林仪式相去甚远。朋友们可以选择在吃饭时互相倾诉,但这种活动本身并不能像玩耍一样天然产生无拘无束的开放感。)”可推断,与朋友共进晚餐虽然吸引人,但是与精心策划的森林仪式相差甚远,共进晚餐不能带来无拘无束的自然的开放感,因此推断作者认为精心策划的森林仪式可以让朋友从中得到更自然的快乐。故选B。
15. 推理判断题。根据第四段“An efficiency mindset risks having friendships feel like making a trade, as if each meeting should be “worth it.”(追求效率的心态可能会让友谊感觉像是交易,好像每次见面都应该感觉“值了”。)”和“You tend to enrich your social life when you stop and stay longer and waste time.(当你停下来、逗留、虚度时间时,你往往会丰富你的社交生活。)”
Building Up Your Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and emotionally engage with others. It is viewed as the fundamental social glue and main psychological mechanism, which enables us to relate to each other, maintain social relations and create a more sympathetic world. ____16____. It is a skill that can be developed and strengthened over time. Here are some tips on how to build up your empathy.
Practice active listening
Listening is one of the most effective ways you can demonstrate empathy to other people. Active listening requires three things. To begin with, paraphrase what the person said to show that you understood the content. ____17____, because it helps the person better understand and regulate their own emotions. Finally, indicate how your response makes you want to behave, because again you are demonstrating that you understand their emotional state and helping them figure out a behavior to move forward with.
Challenge your prejudices and assumptions
Ask yourself why you think that all poor people are lazy, or all people with mental health issues are dangerous. A lot of assumptions and prejudices are based on misinformation that has become widespread. ____18____.
Treat people as being important
Recognize that you aren’t the only one living in this world and that you aren’t some superior being. ____19____. Don’t lump (合并) them into stereotypical (刻板印象的) groups with erroneous one-size-fits-all labels. Each person is an individual and comes with a set of flaws and strengths.
____20____
This means getting a direct experience of another person’s life, the “walk a mile in another person’s shoes” proverb. You don’t have to go quite that far, but consider taking on all the things that your mother does in a day for an entire week. You’ll discover how difficult it is to manage both the home and work, and you’ll have a better appreciation for how much work she has to do. You may even decide to pitch in a bit more.
In conclusion, building up your empathy takes time and effort, but it is worth it. So start practicing today and make a positive impact on the world around you.
A. Practice experiential empathy
B. Leave each person as they are
C. Practice gratitude and appreciation
D. Take each person as they come
E. Reflect on your emotional reaction as well
F. However, empathy is not something we are born with
G. Educate yourself and listen to the groups that are affected by this misinformation
F 17. E 18. G 19. D 20. A
16. 根据下文“It is a skill that can be developed and strengthened over time.( 这是一种可以随着时间的推移而发展和加强的技能。)”可推理出上文说的是同理心不是天生的,与F项“However, empathy is not something we are born with(然而,同理心不是我们天生的)”表达的含义一致,故选F项。
17. 根据下文“because it helps the person better understand and regulate their own emotions.( 因为它有助于人们更好地理解和调节自己的情绪。)”
18. 根据本段小标题“Challenge your prejudices and assumptions(挑战你的偏见和假设)”以及空白处上文“Ask yourself why you think that all poor people are lazy, or all people with mental health issues are dangerous. A lot of assumptions and prejudices are based on misinformation that has become widespread.( 问问自己,为什么你认为所有穷人都很懒惰,或者所有有心理健康问题的人都很危险。许多假设和偏见都是基于已经广泛传播的错误信息)”可知此处上下文说的是要反思自己,挑战自己的偏见和假设,不要受广泛传播的错误信息的误导,与G项“Educate yourself and listen to the groups that are affected by this misinformation(教育自己,倾听受此错误信息影响的群体)”表达的含义一致,故选G项。
19. 根据下文“Don’t lump (合并) them into stereotypical (刻板印象的) groups with erroneous one-size-fits-all labels. Each person is an individual and comes with a set of flaws and strengths(不要将他们归入刻板印象中,贴上错误的“一刀切”的标签。每个人都是独立的个体,都有一系列的缺点和优点。)”可推理出此处上下文说的是要以平常心对待每一个人,与D项“Take each person as they come(以平常心对待每个人)”表达的含义一致,故选D项。
20. 空格处是本段的小标题,根据下文“This means getting a direct experience of another person’s life, the “walk a mile in another person’s shoes” proverb. You don’t have to go quite that far, but consider taking on all the things that your mother does in a day for an entire week. (这意味着直接体验他人的生活,这就是“设身处地走一英里”的谚语。你不必走那么远,但可以考虑在一周内承担你母亲一天所做的所有事情。)”可知本段主要讲的是要对同理心进行练习,与A项“Practice experiential empathy(练习体验式同理心)”表达的含义一致,故选A 项。

47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
(原创试题)
Several years ago, our family of five was driving to Grandma’s house on Christmas Eve when a heavy snowstorm hit. Snow piled up on the highway, and strong winds blew it into deep drifts, slowing traffic to a crawl. Eventually, snowplows blocked the road completely, and the drivers told us, “The highway’s closed. You can’t go any further.”
“But what can we do?” we asked.
They replied, “There is a small church just down the road. They have opened its doors to stranded travelers.” Creeping carefully down the off-ramp, we caught sight of a white wooden building that became our inn for Christmas Eve night.
We went into a church and found about 200 other travelers taking shelter. There were people of all ages—babies, kids, adults, and elderly—and even some dogs. The church’s young pastor called his church members for help, and soon, they arrived with blankets, pillows, and snacks. Some stayed to cook hot food like chili and drinks like coffee and cocoa for everyone.
We sat around in small groups, disappointed that our anticipated plans with our loved ones had been ruined. As there were no cell phones in those days, there was a continuous long line of people impatiently waiting to use the church’s wall phone to alert relatives to their safety, to tell them where they were, and that they would not be getting home for Christmas.
Our daughter Deb brought her guitar with her. She took it out of its case and, while sitting on the gym floor, began to softly sing Christmas carols. Soon, a small group gathered around to join their voices with hers. They were to become “our group” for the rest of the time. Deb played quietly far into the night, as people began to seek out pews, hallways, or floors on which to sleep. The young minister and his wife stayed at the church with us all night.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, more church members came through the snow with breakfast for us.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Late in the afternoon, word arrived that one lane of a road had been cleared.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, more church members came through the snow with breakfast for us. As we ate pancakes and eggs, many of us were sad, thinking about the Christmas celebrations we were missing back home. But since we were all stuck together, we shared stories and kept each other company. When noontime found us still snowbound, another group arrived to prepare lunch. A mechanic came out in the freezing cold to help jump-start dead car batteries, and a gas station owner opened up just for us in case the roads cleared later.
Paragraph 2:
Late in the afternoon, word arrived that one lane of a road had been cleared. Our family decided to try completing the journey to Grandma’s house. After a six-hour drive on slippery roads, we arrived late Christmas night. It was not the holiday we had planned, but one we’d never forgot. We received a gift that wasn’t under a tree—it was the kindness of those church members. They put aside their own comfort and traditions to welcome us, offering not just food but warmth and compassion. We witnessed the true spirit of Christmas, of giving instead of receiving, by opening their hearts to strangers.

An educator with a passion for getting children emotionally invested in saving the ice caps gave a lesson to
students as a polar bear stayed on his shoulder. The bear seemed to say “hi” to them about climate change.
Gavin McCormack is trying to bring the “amazing natural phenomena” to the fingertips of children in an
attempt to get them to help stop rising sea levels and become passionate about climate change, which is
threatening the home of polar bears.
The primary school teacher decided to jump headfirst into his teachings and spent ten days on an icebreaker
heading towards the North Pole. On the first day at sea, a polar bear climbed out of the water right in front of him
and onto an island where it was attacked by a group of Arctic terns
“Each day is different but so interesting,” McCormack said. “This week, my dream to teach children about
the wonder of a polar bear with one right over my shoulder came true.”
The most memorable moment for him while in the Arctic was when his ship reached the pack ice. The ship
crunched (嘎吱地响) through the ice as they reached 82 degrees north and the noise was deafening. Earlier this
week he launched his new course “Be the Change”, which is free to all schools nationwide. “Be the Change” is
designed to empower children, families and communities around the world to bring about changes and make
global impacts. “It takes a course-related approach to improve the world in meaningful ways,” Mr. McCormack
said.
McCormack hopes to teach the “leaders of tomorrow” to include nature and the climate in every decision
they make. He is planning another course named “It Starts With You” with the hopes of bringing purposeful
education to as many children as possible.
“Working alongside teachers, schools and students, we believe that when children are empowered to make
real choices about the future, the skills for life are developed not through listening to what others tell them, but
through experience,” McCormack said.

For most of human history, we have been very good observers because we had to be. We used all of our
senses—touch, smell, taste, hearing, and sight—to detect and discern. The sudden sounds of animals or the
running of birds warned us that someone was approaching. At a distance, by examining posture, way of walking,
arms wing, clothing, and equipment, our ancestors could discern friend from foe (敌人).
As generations evolved and eventually moved to cities, closeness changed how we viewed and assessed each
other. Because everyone was so close, we had less time to observe. Close quarters and circumstances demanded
we interact on first meeting rather than later. This was the opposite of what we had done for thousands of years,
which was to assess first at a distance and then interact. Closeness also made us more sensitive to being observed,
which is why we are uncomfortable when others stare at us.
Have we allowed ourselves to become careless when it comes to our own safety and that of our loved ones? I
see people distracted while driving (applying makeup or texting). Or someone knocks at the front door and we
open it without first seeing who is there and asking what they want. Perhaps, in an attempt to be polite, we have
ended our responsibility to ourselves, and each other, to be good observers.
We should all look around and listen to our inner voice, which is in fact the limbic (边缘的) brain telling us
to be careful that something is wrong, as security special it Gavin de Becker pointed out in The Gift of Fear, So
often, after an encounter or a relationship turns problematic, one hears, “You know I had a feeling, in the
beginning, that something wasn’t right.”
However failure to observe, if we are honest, leads to avoidable circumstances as well as accidents, How we
feel about something often completes the picture so that we can fully understand it Anyway, it is never too late to
start observing. Observation is not about being judgmental, it is not about good or bad. It is about seeing the world
around you, having situational awareness, and interpreting what it is that others are communication both verbally
and nonverbally. To observe is to see but also to understand, and that requires listening to how you feel.
8. What does the underlined word “discern” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Disclose. B. Discover. C. Distinguish. D. Disguise.
9. Why did we spend less time observing?
A. Observing involves too much and is complicated.
B. We felt uneasy when others were staring at us.
C. We got more sensitive to others’ observation.
D. Closeness required people to communicate on first meeting.
10. Possibly for what have we given up being good observers?
A. Being careless. B. Avoiding rudeness.
C. Paying no attention. D. Being irresponsible.
11. What is the best title?
A. Be good observers. B. Discern friend from foe.
C. Care about our safety. D. Start observing now.
D
Adults tend to have stronger cognitive, social and emotional skills, which allow them to better identify with,
offer advice to, and otherwise support friends. Many young adults enjoy this emotional depth along with an
abundance of free time before family and career responsibilities pick up in midlife. It’s no wonder that this age is a
high-water mark for friendship. Those who go to college get a few extra years of living near their peers. Later in
adulthood, though, people have more demands on their time: work, romantic partnership, and caregiving all

compete for their attention.
Plus, when adults enter the workforce full-time, potential new friends don’t constantly surround them the way
they did in school or while living in dormitories. Though some continue to carve out time for their social lives.
Bagwell said, friendship tends to become “a luxury rather than priority.”
Under these new circumstances, many people see friends less frequently — and they tend to spend the time
they do have together differently. For efficiency’s sake, they might pair socializing with other activities, like
sharing a meal. Though grabbing dinner with a friend can be engaging, it’s a far cry from well-planned forest
ceremonies. Friends could choose to tell each other secrets at a meal, but the activity doesn’t bring about the type
of natural openness that play can.
This pursuit of efficiency and the safety of following routine can come at the cost of pleasure. An efficiency
mindset risks having friendships feel like making a trade, as if each meeting should be “worth it.” But squeezing
time for short and rare meetings is unlikely to feel fulfilling. If you haven’t seen each other in a while, focusing on
chatting about old days is natural. However, looking back on important events in life can feel like exchanging
notes while joint adventures create memories—the foundation of close friendship. As the sociologist Eric
Klinenberg put it, “You tend to enrich your social life when you stop, stay longer and waste time.”
A. Ambiguous. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Approving.

Building Up Your Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and emotionally engage with others. It is viewed as the fundamental
social glue and main psychological mechanism, which enables us to relate to each other, maintain social relations
and create a more sympathetic world. ____16____. It is a skill that can be developed and strengthened over time.
Here are some tips on how to build up your empathy.
Practice active listening
Listening is one of the most effective ways you can demonstrate empathy to other people. Active listening
requires three things. To begin with, paraphrase what the person said to show that you understood the content.
____17____, because it helps the person better understand and regulate their own emotions. Finally, indicate how
your response makes you want to behave, because again you are demonstrating that you understand their
emotional state and helping them figure out a behavior to move forward with.
Challenge your prejudices and assumptions
Ask yourself why you think that all poor people are lazy, or all people with mental health issues are
dangerous. A lot of assumptions and prejudices are based on misinformation that has become widespread.
____18____.
Treat people as being important
Recognize that you aren’t the only one living in this world and that you aren’t some superior being.
____19____. Don’t lump (合并) them into stereotypical (刻板印象的) groups with erroneous one-size-fits-all
labels. Each person is an individual and comes with a set of flaws and strengths.
____20____
This means getting a direct experience of another person’s life, the “walk a mile in another person’s shoes”
proverb. You don’t have to go quite that far, but consider taking on all the things that your mother does in a day for
an entire week. You’ll discover how difficult it is to manage both the home and work, and you’ll have a better
appreciation for how much work she has to do. You may even decide to pitch in a bit more.
In conclusion, building up your empathy takes time and effort, but it is worth it. So start practicing today and
make a positive impact on the world around you.
A. Practice experiential empathy
B. Leave each person as they are

Several years ago, our family of five was driving to Grandma’s house on Christmas Eve when a heavy
snowstorm hit. Snow piled up on the highway, and strong winds blew it into deep drifts, slowing traffic to a crawl.
Eventually, snowplows blocked the road completely, and the drivers told us, “The highway’s closed. You can’t go
any further.”
“But what can we do?” we asked.
They replied, “There is a small church just down the road. They have opened its doors to stranded travelers.”
Creeping carefully down the off-ramp, we caught sight of a white wooden building that became our inn for
Christmas Eve night.
We went into a church and found about 200 other travelers taking shelter. There were people of all
ages—babies, kids, adults, and elderly—and even some dogs. The church’s young pastor called his church
members for help, and soon, they arrived with blankets, pillows, and snacks. Some stayed to cook hot food like
chili and drinks like coffee and cocoa for everyone.
We sat around in small groups, disappointed that our anticipated plans with our loved ones had been ruined.
As there were no cell phones in those days, there was a continuous long line of people impatiently waiting to use
the church’s wall phone to alert relatives to their safety, to tell them where they were, and that they would not be
getting home for Christmas.
Our daughter Deb brought her guitar with her. She took it out of its case and, while sitting on the gym floor,
began to softly sing Christmas carols. Soon, a small group gathered around to join their voices with hers. They
were to become “our group” for the rest of the time. Deb played quietly far into the night, as people began to seek
out pews, hallways, or floors on which to sleep. The young minister and his wife stayed at the church with us all
night.

One possible version:
