Back in the 1990s, Henry Rotich who is from Kenya, did not know much about China, with his best
connection to the country being a teakettle made in Shanghai that was owned by his grandmother.
Nevertheless, he applied to study in China when an opportunity presented itself in 1998. Luckily, he got the
chance to come to China to pursue his master’s degree in chemistry at the same year. And his main challenge at
that time was learning the language. However, he could communicate with people easily by simple Chinese after a

“During my travels around China as a student, I found people very friendly and helpful. That is how I came
to learn their language fast.”
“Learning language and culture depends on one’s mindset as well as the opportunity to live in an
environment where the language is used daily,” Rotich said. He believes that China’s scholarship program for
African students to study in China has been instrumental in helping young Africans learn Chinese and immerse
(沉浸) themselves in the culture.
To complete his chemistry studies, Rotich spent eight years in China. Asked about the benefits of studying in
the country, Rotich, who is married to a Chinese woman, quipped (打趣) that he came back to Kenya with “three
degrees” in the same period it would take others to get just two degrees. “The first degree is my wife, the second
one is my master’s and finally, my PhD,” he said proudly.
Rotich said different countries and people should concentrate on their cultural similarities. He has noted
many similarities between the Chinese and Kenyan cultures, and this has helped him appreciate the Chinese way
of life. The similarities include respect for the elderly, families gathering during special festivals, and good
neighborliness.
As chairman of the Kenya-China Alumni Association for Kenyan students who studied in China, Rotich
praised the role played by Chinese scholarships in promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries.
24. Why did Henry Rotich learn Chinese so fast at the beginning?
A. He married a Chinese girl. B. He was more intelligent than other students.
C. He got lots of help from Chinese people. D. He devoted all his spare time to studying
25. What can we know about Henry Rotich from the passage?
A. He came to China to study Chinese. B. He bought a teakettle made in Shanghai.
C. He got three degrees when studying in China. D. He has a good knowledge of Chinese culture.
26. What does Rotich think of China’s scholarship program?
A. It contributes to the cultural communication. B. It increases the cultural similarities.
C. It promotes Kenya’s economic growth. D. It helps young Kenyans get higher degrees.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Challenges Henry Rotich met in China
B. Cultural cooperation between China and Kenya
C. Henry Rotich’s studying in China — a wise choice
D. Henry Rotich’s working experience in China — a magic story
C
Do you have frightening dreams while sleeping? According to an email interview by clinical psychologist
and sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus, roughly 5 percent of the general population has at least one bad dream per
week. Nightmares typically happen during REM sleep, during the middle and later parts of the night.
There is no exact explanation for nightmares, but Breus says it’s possible that they help the brain practise,
prepare for and even predict difficult or dangerous experiences in waking life. Of course, it’s possible that
nightmares, like dreams in general, don’t have a primary function — that they’re a by-product of other activities in
the body. But most sleep scientists think that dreams and nightmares exist for some purposes.
One study found the most common nightmare was falling, followed by dreams of being chased, feeling lost,
and feeling trapped. Then why do nightmares happen?
“Certain circumstances and characteristics make some people more likely to have nightmares than others,”
says sleep medicine specialist Dr. Barry Krakow. He thinks people who’ve been traumatized (使受精神创伤) are
certainly at a higher risk of nightmares Examples are offered of those who have suffered criminal attacks, or who
have been in life-threatening accidents. People with some degree of sensitivity in their biological make-up are also
more likely to have bad dreams, so they’re more common in people who suffer from anxiety or depression, or who
use excess drugs or alcohol. The traditional belief often has it that nightmares are the result of eating too much rich
food before bedtime, but it is still uncertain whether this is true. One study from 2015 did find a link between
eating dairy or hot foods before bedtime and having disturbing dreams, but the study authors noted that this
couldn’t be proven definitely because the data was self-reported and there were a lot of other factors to consider.
However, research in recent decades has shown that people who suffer from sleep disorders are also more
likely to have nightmares.
28. What may Dr. Breus agree with about nightmares?
A. They happen for certain purposes. B. They are similar to daydreams.
C. They possibly help predict future events. D. They come true once in a while.
29. Who does Dr. Krakow think tends to suffer nightmares?
A. John who often stays up late. B. Peter who has had terrible experiences.
C. Jack who is sensitive to alcohol. D. Paul who sleeps soundly at night.
30. How does the traditional belief explain nightmares?
A. They are often caused by irregular bedtimes.

In a new study, the researchers examined trends in subjective well-being (幸福) over the course of a lifespan
based on 443 samples from a total of 460,902 participants. “We focused on changes in three central components of
subjective well-being: life satisfaction, positive emotional states and negative emotional states,” explains Professor
Susanne Bücker.
The findings show that life satisfaction decreased between the ages of 9 and 16, then increased slightly until
the age of 70, and then decreased once again until the age of 96. Positive emotional states showed a general
decline from age 9 to age 94, while negative emotional states fluctuated (波动) slightly between ages 9 and 22,
then declined until age 60 and then increased once again. The authors identified greater median changes in
positive and negative emotional states than in life satisfaction.
“Overall, the study indicated a positive trend over a wide period of life, if we look at life satisfaction and
negative emotional states,” Susanne Bücker concludes. The researchers attribute (把……归因于) the slight
decline in life satisfaction between the ages of 9 and 16 to, for example, changes to the body and to the social life
that take place during puberty. Satisfaction rose again from young adulthood onwards. Positive feelings tended to
decrease from childhood to late adulthood. In very late adulthood, all components of subjective well-being tended
to worsen rather than improve. “This could be related to the fact that in very old people, physical performance
decreases, health often worsens, and social contacts reduce; not least because their peers pass away,” calculates the
researcher.
The study highlights the need to consider and promote subjective well-being with its various components
across the life, as the authors of the study conclude. Their findings could provide significant guidance for the
development of intervention programmes, especially those aimed at maintaining or improving subjective
well-being late in life.
32. What is exactly the subject of the study?
A. Life satisfaction of the elderly. B. Trends in lifelong subjective well-being.
C. Ways to control negative emotional states. D. Factors affecting positive emotional states.
33. When do all components of subjective well-being go worse?
A. In late adulthood. B. During childhood. C. At middle age. D. In young adulthood.
34. What is the positive significance of this study?
A. Teaching to improve physical performance.
B. Giving suggestions on the lifetime increase.
C. Providing a theoretical basis for healthy growth.
D. Guiding to improve the well-being of the elderly.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. When does happiness matter most to us?
B. What does subjective well-being consist of?
C. Why will we be more positive as we get older?
D. How does subjective well-being develop over the lifetime?

If you find yourself thinking, “I am a failure,” it’s important to know that there are things you can do to feel
better. Knowing how to cope (应对) with failure in a healthy way takes some of the fear out of it. ___36___
First of all, it’s important to acknowledge that everybody fails at one time or another, but that doesn’t make
us failures—it just means we are human, and that things didn’t work out this time. If you do feel like a failure,
calling a friend, going for a walk, or playing with your pet are just a few examples of healthy ways to deal with
your pain. ___37___ So you should try to find out what does for you.
Failure can be a great teacher if you’re open to learning. Did you make a whole series of mistakes? Think
about what you could do differently next time. ___38___ Instead of seeing a failure as a burden weighing you
down, look at it as a stepping stone toward your goals.
Once you’ve identified your mistakes and where you can learn from them, you’ll be ready to make a plan for
moving forward. ___39___ Stop thinking, “I am a failure.” and focus on thinking. “I am capable of trying again.”
Create a plan that will help you put the information you gained into practice.
If you’ve spent most of your life avoiding failure, it can feel really scary when it finally happens. Facing your
fears, however, can be the key to reducing the discomfort. ___40___ Do things that might get you rejected or try
new things where you could fail. Over time, you’ll learn that failure isn’t as bad as you might imagine.
A. Practice stepping outside your comfort zone.
B. Not every coping skill works for everyone, though.
C. These will provide you with some temporary relief.

Human memory is unreliable. Even people with the sharpest facial recognition skills can only remember so
much.
It’s tough to quantify how good a person is ___56___ remembering. No one really knows how many different
faces someone can recall, for example, but various estimates tend to hover in the thousands.
Machines aren’t limited this way. Give the right computer a massive database of faces, and it can process
what it sees — then recognize a face it ___57___ (tell) to find — with remarkable speed and precision. This skill
is ___58___ supports the enormous promise of facial-recognition software in the 21st century.
The thing is, machines still have limitations when it comes to facial recognition: And scientists are only just
beginning to understand what those constraints are. ___59___ (figure) out how computers are struggling,
researchers at the University of Washington created a massive database of faces and ___60___ (test) a variety of
facial-recognition algorithms (算法) as they scales up in complexity. The idea was to test the machines on a
database that included up to 1 million different images of nearly 7, 000 different people — and not just a large
database ___61___ (feature) a relatively small number of different faces.
As the databases grew, machine ___62___ (accurate) dipped across the board. Algorithms ___63___ were
right 95% of the time when they were dealing with a 13,000-image database; for example, were accurate about 70%
of the time when face with 1 million images.
Machines also had difficulty adjusting for people who look a lot alike — either doppoelgangers
的人) , whom the machine would have trouble in identifying as two separate people, ___64___ the same person
who appeared in different photos at different ages or in different lighting, whom the machine would ____65____
(correct) view as separate people.

My sister Tina and I are very different. I'm a just simple-minded girl, at least in her eyes, while she is literally
the symbol of perfection. When I was young I wanted to be like her. If she wore her hair in a new style one day, I
would do the same with mine the following day. I always tried to follow her and her friends around and begged to
be included, but her life didn't really have much space for a bothersome two-year-younger sister. Over time, my
admiration for her had turned into indifference. Living in the same apartment as strangers, we barely spoke to each
other.
I even felt relieved in secret when she informed me this year that she would be spending eight months
studying abroad. I assumed I'd use her video player and wear the dresses she left behind. That was the only way l
thought her leaving would affect me.
I sat in my room that first evening after she departed and tried to concentrate on my homework. However, I
couldn't get rid of the feeling that something was wrong, or something was missing. I looked around the apartment
and everything was the same. But it was so silent that I could hear my own breathing. I went to Tina's room. Both
her video player and her talk on the phone with her friends were absent. When I sat down on her bed, I became
sharply aware of how different my life was without her. Even though we didn't always talk, just having her there
made me feel secure.
Sitting there, I looked back at the wasted years and regretted trying to live my own life and overlooking hers.
I felt particularly bad because I had not even given her a hug before she boarded her plane, and that made my heart
ache.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

M: It was the night before the basketball championship. And the worst thing is that we lost the game and all hopes of winning our title back.

A 15. C 16. A 17.B
W: Jack, I heard that your daughter has decided to follow a strictly vegan diet. What’s your take on this?
M: Well, I was bothered about it at first, but she’s sixteen now, and feels strongly about causing harm to animals. She adores them— she’s even thinking about studying the medical treatment of animals one day. She believes that animals also cherish life and fear death.
W: But isn’t it true that vegans skip dairy or other animal products either? I don’t see how using their products hurts the animals.
M: She maintains that the egg and dairy industries cause immense suffering and death as well.
W: But aren’t you worried that she will lack nutrients, like protein and calcium?
M: To be sure, it’s a challenge. She spends ages reading food labels and hunting for plant-based solutions for all the nutrients she needs. It does seem unnatural to a lot of people in our society. But she’s serious about this, and I support her.
W: How does this affect the rest of the family? It seems unfortunate to me if the other kids start feeling bad about having pizza or a birthday cake.
M: If that happens, we will do everything we can to put an end to it. Since this is her personal choice, she alone should suffer or benefit from the consequences.

From there, I hopped on a bullet train to Shanghai. What a contrast! The modern skyline and busy streets were everywhere! Later in Chengdu, I encountered a food lover’s paradise. The spicy hotpot excited my taste buds, and seeing pandas was absolutely joyful.
Most memorable were Chinese people. Their smiles and kindness bridged the language gaps, China is a blend of ancient and modern wonders, with delicious food and warm hearts. I left longing for more, vowing to return. It’s truly a traveler’s dream destination!

Back in the 1990s, Henry Rotich who is from Kenya, did not know much about China, with his best connection to the country being a teakettle made in Shanghai that was owned by his grandmother.
Nevertheless, he applied to study in China when an opportunity presented itself in 1998. Luckily, he got the chance to come to China to pursue his master’s degree in chemistry at the same year. And his main challenge at that time was learning the language. However, he could communicate with people easily by simple Chinese after a month.
“During my travels around China as a student, I found people very friendly and helpful. That is how I came to learn their language fast.”
“Learning language and culture depends on one’s mindset as well as the opportunity to live in an environment where the language is used daily,” Rotich said. He believes that China’s scholarship program for African students to study in China has been instrumental in helping young Africans learn Chinese and immerse (沉浸) themselves in the culture.
To complete his chemistry studies, Rotich spent eight years in China. Asked about the benefits of studying in the country, Rotich, who is married to a Chinese woman, quipped (打趣) that he came back to Kenya with “three degrees” in the same period it would take others to get just two degrees. “The first degree is my wife, the second one is my master’s and finally, my PhD,” he said proudly.
Rotich said different countries and people should concentrate on their cultural similarities. He has noted many similarities between the Chinese and Kenyan cultures, and this has helped him appreciate the Chinese way of life. The similarities include respect for the elderly, families gathering during special festivals, and good neighborliness.
As chairman of the Kenya-China Alumni Association for Kenyan students who studied in China, Rotich praised the role played by Chinese scholarships in promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries.
C 25. D 26. A 27. C
根据第三段“During my travels around China as a student, I found people very friendly and helpful. That is how I came to learn their language fast.(作为一名学生,我在中国各地旅行时发现人们非常友好和乐于助人。这就是我快速学习他们语言的原因)”可知,Henry Rotich能够快速学习中文,是因为他在中国旅行时发现中国人非常友好且乐于助人,他得到了中国人民的很多帮助,这使得他更快地掌握了语言。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第五段“To complete his chemistry studies, Rotich spent eight years in China.(为了完成化学学业,Rotich在中国待了八年)”以及第六段“Rotich said different countries and people should concentrate on their cultural similarities. He has noted many similarities between the Chinese and Kenyan cultures, and this has helped him appreciate the Chinese way of life.(Rotich说,不同的国家和人民应该关注他们的文化相似性。他注意到中国和肯尼亚文化之间有许多相似之处,这有助于他欣赏中国的生活方式)”可推知,Henry Rotich对中国的文化有很深的理解和欣赏。故选D。
26. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“As chairman of the Kenya-China Alumni Association for Kenyan students who studied in China, Rotich praised the role played by Chinese scholarships in promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries.(作为肯尼亚中国留学生校友会主席,Rotich赞扬了中国奖学金在促进两国文化交流方面发挥的作用)”可知,Rotich认为中国奖学金项目促进两国文化交流。故选A。
根据第二段“Nevertheless, he applied to study in China when an opportunity presented itself in 1998. Do you have frightening dreams while sleeping? According to an email interview by clinical psychologist and sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus, roughly 5 percent of the general population has at least one bad dream per week. Nightmares typically happen during REM sleep, during the middle and later parts of the night.
There is no exact explanation for nightmares, but Breus says it’s possible that they help the brain practise, prepare for and even predict difficult or dangerous experiences in waking life. Of course, it’s possible that nightmares, like dreams in general, don’t have a primary function — that they’re a by-product of other activities in the body. But most sleep scientists think that dreams and nightmares exist for some purposes.
One study found the most common nightmare was falling, followed by dreams of being chased, feeling lost, and feeling trapped. Then why do nightmares happen?
“Certain circumstances and characteristics make some people more likely to have nightmares than others,” says sleep medicine specialist Dr. Barry Krakow. He thinks people who’ve been traumatized (使受精神创伤) are certainly at a higher risk of nightmares Examples are offered of those who have suffered criminal attacks, or who have been in life-threatening accidents. People with some degree of sensitivity in their biological make-up are also more likely to have bad dreams, so they’re more common in people who suffer from anxiety or depression, or who use excess drugs or alcohol. The traditional belief often has it that nightmares are the result of eating too much rich food before bedtime, but it is still uncertain whether this is true. One study from 2015 did find a link between eating dairy or hot foods before bedtime and having disturbing dreams, but the study authors noted that this couldn’t be proven definitely because the data was self-reported and there were a lot of other factors to consider.
However, research in recent decades has shown that people who suffer from sleep disorders are also more likely to have nightmares.
B. They are based on disturbing life experiences.
C. They are the consequence of negative feelings.
D. They are related to what is taken before bedtime.
31. From which section of a website is the text probably taken?
A. Mental health. B. Life experiences. C. Eating habits. D. Popular culture.

In a new study, the researchers examined trends in subjective well-being (幸福) over the course of a lifespan based on 443 samples from a total of 460,902 participants. “We focused on changes in three central components of subjective well-being: life satisfaction, positive emotional states and negative emotional states,” explains Professor Susanne Bücker.
The findings show that life satisfaction decreased between the ages of 9 and 16, then increased slightly until the age of 70, and then decreased once again until the age of 96. Positive emotional states showed a general decline from age 9 to age 94, while negative emotional states fluctuated (波动) slightly between ages 9 and 22, then declined until age 60 and then increased once again. The authors identified greater median changes in positive and negative emotional states than in life satisfaction.
“Overall, the study indicated a positive trend over a wide period of life, if we look at life satisfaction and negative emotional states,” Susanne Bücker concludes. The researchers attribute (把……归因于) the slight decline in life satisfaction between the ages of 9 and 16 to, for example, changes to the body and to the social life that take place during puberty. Satisfaction rose again from young adulthood onwards. Positive feelings tended to decrease from childhood to late adulthood. In very late adulthood, all components of subjective well-being tended to worsen rather than improve. “This could be related to the fact that in very old people, physical performance decreases, health often worsens, and social contacts reduce; not least because their peers pass away,” calculates the researcher.
The study highlights the need to consider and promote subjective well-being with its various components across the life, as the authors of the study conclude. Their findings could provide significant guidance for the development of intervention programmes, especially those aimed at maintaining or improving subjective well-being late in life.

Human memory is unreliable. Even people with the sharpest facial recognition skills can only remember so much.
It’s tough to quantify how good a person is ___56___ remembering. No one really knows how many different faces someone can recall, for example, but various estimates tend to hover in the thousands.
Machines aren’t limited this way. Give the right computer a massive database of faces, and it can process what it sees — then recognize a face it ___57___ (tell) to find — with remarkable speed and precision. This skill is ___58___ supports the enormous promise of facial-recognition software in the 21st century.
The thing is, machines still have limitations when it comes to facial recognition: And scientists are only just beginning to understand what those constraints are. ___59___ (figure) out how computers are struggling, researchers at the University of Washington created a massive database of faces and ___60___ (test) a variety of facial-recognition algorithms (算法) as they scales up in complexity. The idea was to test the machines on a database that included up to 1 million different images of nearly 7, 000 different people — and not just a large database ___61___ (feature) a relatively small number of different faces.
As the databases grew, machine ___62___ (accurate) dipped across the board. Algorithms ___63___ were right 95% of the time when they were dealing with a 13,000-image database; for example, were accurate about 70% of the time when face with 1 million images.
Machines also had difficulty adjusting for people who look a lot alike — either doppoelgangers (长相极相似的人) , whom the machine would have trouble in identifying as two separate people, ___64___ the same person who appeared in different photos at different ages or in different lighting, whom the machine would ____65____ (correct) view as separate people.
56. at 57. is told 58. what 59. To figure 60. tested 61. featuring
62. accuracy 63. that#which 64. or 65. correctly
故填at。
故填is told。
故填what。
故填To figure。
故填that/which。
故填or。

My sister Tina and I are very different. I'm a just simple-minded girl, at least in her eyes, while she is literally the symbol of perfection. When I was young I wanted to be like her. If she wore her hair in a new style one day, I would do the same with mine the following day. I always tried to follow her and her friends around and begged to be included, but her life didn't really have much space for a bothersome two-year-younger sister. Over time, my admiration for her had turned into indifference. Living in the same apartment as strangers, we barely spoke to each other.
I even felt relieved in secret when she informed me this year that she would be spending eight months studying abroad. I assumed I'd use her video player and wear the dresses she left behind. That was the only way l thought her leaving would affect me.
I sat in my room that first evening after she departed and tried to concentrate on my homework. However, I couldn't get rid of the feeling that something was wrong, or something was missing. I looked around the apartment and everything was the same. But it was so silent that I could hear my own breathing. I went to Tina's room. Both her video player and her talk on the phone with her friends were absent. When I sat down on her bed, I became sharply aware of how different my life was without her. Even though we didn't always talk, just having her there made me feel secure.
Sitting there, I looked back at the wasted years and regretted trying to live my own life and overlooking hers. I felt particularly bad because I had not even given her a hug before she boarded her plane, and that made my heart ache.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

One possible version:
As the night went on, I decided to do something to make it up. I picked up the phone and called her halfway across the world. As I waited for her to pick up, my concerns kept growing every second. Finally she was on the phone. Without waiting for her “Hello”, I said, “It's me. I just want to tell you I really miss you. I know we aren't as close as some sisters, but that doesn't mean I'm not missing you a ton.”
For a long time there was nothing but silence on the other end of the line. Finally she spoke. Her voice sounded as though it came from nearby. “I've been sitting here, all alone, thinking about you guys back home, too. Your voice makes me feel as though I were right there with you,” she said very quickly just as I did. “I miss you, too. I'm counting down the days before I can go home.”
①打电话给某人:call sb /ring sb up
②意味着:mean /signify

“During my travels around China as a student, I found people very friendly and helpful. That is how I came to learn their language fast.”

He believes that China’s scholarship program for African students to study in China has been instrumental in helping young Africans learn Chinese and immerse (沉浸) themselves in the culture.

B. They are based on disturbing life experiences.
C. They are the consequence of negative feelings.
D. They are related to what is taken before bedtime.

First of all, it’s important to acknowledge that everybody fails at one time or another, but that doesn’t make us failures—it just means we are human, and that things didn’t work out this time.
