It is a secret message for that person only. Other people can’t see the message on the paper. Only that person knows how to make the message appear. Here’s an experiment on how to write such a message. You’ll need half a lemon a cup four spoons of water a cotton swab (棉签) white paper a light bulb (电灯泡) What to do 1. Squeeze (挤) some lemon juice into water. Mix the water and juice. 2. Put the cotton swab into the mixture and make it wet. Use the wet cotton swab to write some words on the paper. 3. Let the paper dry. Show it to someone and ask if he or she can see the words on the paper. 4. Hold the paper close to a light bulb to heat it. Ask him or her again. Let me explain it! Lemon juice has chemicals that have carbon (碳). The chemicals break down easily when they are heated. And the carbon makes them turn a dark color, then you can see the words. 21. What is the correct order of the experiment? a. Use a light bulb to heat the paper. b. Put a cotton swab into the mixture. c. Mix lemon juice and water. d. Write on the paper with the wet cotton swab. e. Dry the paper. A. a-d-c-b-e B. c-b-a-e-d C. c-b-d-e-a D. a-e-b-c-d 22. You can see the secret message ________. A. when you hold the paper up B. after you heat the paper C. after you dry the paper D. when you shake the paper 23. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To show how to make good use of lemons. B. To explain why water is very important. C. To tell us how to use paper wisely. D. To show how to write a secret message. B “Let’s brainstorm together!” You might often hear your teachers ask you to have a group discussion to solve a problem. But is brainstorming really the best way to solve problems, especially creative ones? The Dutch company WeTransfer did a study of 20,000 people from 197 countries and regions. Most of these people work in creative jobs, such as writers, musicians and scientists. The results showed that brainstorming was often unhelpful for solving creative challenges. “It seems that while working together is important to bring an idea to life, it’s not very helpful for shaping ideas in the first place,” said Rob Alderson, WeTransfer’s editor-in-chief. If we give people enough time and space to think clearly, they can come up with better ideas, Alderson aded. Even Alex Osborn, the father of brainstorming, believed that spending time thinking alone was part of his own creative process. However, most companies don’t give their staff enough time and chances to prepare and develop their ideas on their own. Instead, they often hold too many meetings, which can hurt creativity. More than 40 percent of the people said meetings were harmful to good thinking. Spending time alone to think helps you come up with your own ideas and develop independent thinking. This is especially important when making decisions. Nearly 80 percent of the people in WeTransfer’s study said they trusted their own instincts (直觉) and research when deciding whether an idea was good. 24. What did WeTransfer’s research find out? A. People waste too much time brainstorming. B. Brainstorming brings creative people together. C. Brainstorming is needed to solve creative problems. D. Brainstorming isn’t very helpful for solving creative challenges. 25. Which idea might Alex Osborn agree with about coming up with good ideas? A. Working with others is important. B. Thinking on your own is helpful. C. Having discussions in meetings helps a lot. D. Asking for quick answers leads to better ideas. 26. What problems do some companies have according to Paragraph 5? A. Most of their staff can’t speak up. B. They don’t give their staff enough time to think. C. They don’t know how to hold a creative meeting. D. They care too much about their staff’s creativity. 27. Which is the best title for the passage? A. Better ideas come from thinking alone B. Think twice before making a decision C. Find someone and share your idea D. Brainstorming develops creativity C Rongchang, a small city in Chongqing, has become well-known around the world because of its traditional food, Rongchang Braised Goose (荣昌烤鹅). This all started with Lin Jiang, a 48-year-old man from the local area. He followed an international livestreamer named “IShowSpeed” (甲亢哥) through five different cities. His goal was to share his hometown’s special dish. Lin wore a bright red flowery coat and shouted “Rongchang braised goose!” in easy English. His funny and sincere actions made millions of people like him online. One video of him got 120 million views, and the dish became very popular all over the world. The local government quickly helped Lin. They made him the “Chief Ambassador” of Rongchang Braised Goose and gave him 100,000 yuan as a reward. They also worked on making sure the food was safe. During holidays such as May Day, the government opened its cafeteria. There, tourists could eat cheap local dishes, including the famous braised goose. They also offered free parking, more bus services, and held cultural festivals to welcome visitors. Rongchang Braised Goose is not just an ordinary dish. It has a history of 300 years. It uses a secret recipe that has been passed down from one generation to another. It also uses special white geese from the local area. Now, this dish stands for the city’s culture. When tourists come, they don’t just eat the goose. They also take part in activities like making pottery and weaving traditional cloth. So, having a meal becomes a cultural experience. The results are amazing. The number of geese sold online went up by 105%. More people booked hotels, and during busy seasons, over 100,000 tourists visited the city every day. The city plans to become more famous around the world. It will work with Chinese communities overseas to share the “taste of home”. Lin Jiang’s story shows that if you are passionate and work together, you can turn a local dish into a way to connect different cultures. As he said, “I just wanted the world to taste my hometown’s flavor.” Today, Rongchang shows that even small cities can become very popular if they are real and put their heart into what they do. 28. Why did Lin Jiang follow “IShowSpeed” through five cities? A. To study English with the livestreamer B. To make his hometown’s special food well-known C. To ask the livestreamer to come to Rongchang D. To take part in an international cultural event 29. What can we know about the local government’s actions? A. They focused only on economic benefits from tourism B. They believed Lin Jiang’s success was accidental C. They wanted to protect traditional recipes from being copied D. They wanted to attract more tourists with various services. 30. Why does the author mention the 300-year history of Rongchang Braised Goose? A. To prove it is older than other Chinese dishes B. To explain how to make this dish C. To compare it with modern fast food D. To strengthen its cultural meaning beyond food 31. What does Lin Jiang’s story mainly convey (传达)? A. Livestreaming is the most effective way to promote local food B. Small cities cannot compete with big cities in tourism C. Traditional dishes need modern marketing to survive D. Passion and collaboration (激情和合作) can turn local products into cultural bridges D Reading and writing Chinese characters is often considered the most ambitious challenge that language learners face in order to achieve fluency (流利). Indeed, the process which has shaped this character system over thousands of years is both complex (复杂的) and long. Although they may appear bewildering at first, Chinese characters are actually made up of different building blocks (块) that form a straight and reasonable structure. Once you catch a basic understanding of the structure of Chinese characters, you will be reading and writing your way across the kingdom of Chinese characters in no time. Read the following and continue along your journey to learn Chinese characters. Unlike the Roman alphabet (字母), Chinese characters are used to show meaning rather than sound. In fact, most characters were first used as visual (视觉的) descriptions of physical elements like trees, houses or humans. Their earliest forms, simplified versions of these symbols, known as character radicals (偏旁), serve as the foundation for modern written Mandarin (普通话). Making up about 80% of the Chinese characters, radicals—in addition to Chinese pinyin—are an important starting point for anyone who wants to read or write well in Mandarin. Jump to the list of the 40 most used Chinese radicals and continue learning Chinese characters. When two or more radicals are connected, they work together to create a single character; the radical on the left most shows the character’s type or meaning, while the radical on the right might show its pronunciation. Most of the written language is made up of character compounds, in which several characters are connected to make one word. An important rule to note is that characters are written according to a standardized stroke order (笔画顺序), which typically moves from left to right, top to bottom and ▲ . Although Chinese characters may seem difficult at first, patterns will quickly appear once you develop a basic foundation. So, review your radicals, know about the most commonly used Chinese characters, and watch as your Mandarin skills grow quickly! 32. What does the underlined word “bewildering” mean in Chinese? A. 令人快乐的 B. 令人害怕的 C. 令人困惑的 D. 令人感动的 33. What does the fifth paragraph talk about? A. The role of Chinese characters. B. The popularity of Chinese characters. C. The method of making a Chinese character. D. The difficulty of using Chinese characters. 34. Which of the following can be put into “ ▲ ” in the last paragraph? It seems like these images grow even more realistic with each passing day. But don’t panic, says Siwei Lyu. He is a computer scientist at the University of Buffalo. Lyu and a group of researchers have offered some tips about how to find out whether an image is real or fake. The first step is to slow down. On social media, it takes us as little as 13 milliseconds (毫秒) to process a picture. That may be enough to notice what it is, but not enough to think about whether or not it’s real. When you take more time to look, what you find may surprise you. “Next time we see some interesting or funny things, hopefully we’ll pause a little bit and think about it,” Lyu says. AI programmes are trained to create images by looking at a huge amount of real ones. These programmes only know what they’ve been given. They don’t know what details to pay attention to. This results in problems that are obvious upon closer inspection (检查). If there is a person in an image Lyu recommends looking at his or her hands and eyes. Current AI programmes aren’t good at producing lifelike hands. They may have six fingers, or fingers that are all the same length or are locked in a strange pose. And why the eyes? Humans almost always have circular pupils (圆形瞳孔), but AI often produces strangely shaped shadow in the centre of the eyes. Light reflected from the eyes should also be in the same place on each eye. It’s something that current AI tools are still trying to work out. Many AI-created images also have an unnatural smoothness (平滑) where there should be texture (纹理). Things that should be straight may be curved (弯曲的). You can start looking out for AI-created images today. Check first before you believe anything you see! 61. With AI tools’ __________, anyone can create images. But it gets a little more __________ for people to tell if the images are real or fake. 62. Usually it takes  as little as 13 milliseconds to find out the truth, which we may be __________ at. So Siwei Lyu hopes that we’ll pause and think more when we see __________ interesting or funny. 63. The computer scientist recommends looking at hands and eyes. In an image created by AI, a person may have __________ more finger than five and each finger may be as __________ as the others. 64. His or her pupils’ shape produced by AI may be __________ from the circular pupils of humans. So don’t __________ everything you see, and there’s still room for AI tools to make improvement. 65. What does the article tell us? ______________________________________ VII.Writing (满分15分) 66. 参考词汇:书法calligraphy __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$Might, why do you look so happy? Brainstorming develops creativity 【答案】24. D 25. B 26. B 27. The results are amazing. The number of geese sold online went up by 105%. More people booked hotels, and during busy seasons, over 100,000 tourists visited the city every day. The city plans to become more famous around the world. It will work with Chinese communities overseas to share the “taste of home”. The first step is to slow down. On social media it takes us as little as 13 milliseconds (毫秒) to process a picture. If there is a person in an image, Lyu recommends looking at his or her hands and eyes. 65.
