Passage 2
How much sleep do you get every day? Some of us sleep a lot and some of us sleep a little. So do animals. Let’s look at the histogram (柱状图) of their sleeping hours!
Koalas come from Australia. They are lovely. They spend a long time sleeping and digesting (消化). Their food doesn’t have enough energy (能量) and is hard to digest. So, they sleep to save their energy.
Lions are big sleepers too. They are likely to catch other animals at night or during the early hours of the day. At that time, most lions’ prey sleep. This makes the animals easier to catch. When not hunting (猎取), a lion always plays or sleeps on the ground.
Giraffes don’t get very much sleep. Mostly they take short sleep while standing up, and they only lie down to get some deep sleep for about 30 minutes. Why? Because they are afraid of getting hurt by other animals while sleeping.
Horses do most of their sleeping while standing up because they’re ready to run away. Usually horses only need 20 minutes to get some deep sleep. When the horse group lies down, one horse always stays awake to keep watch. However, you can find some horses sleeping for up to 6 hour a day if they feel safe.
1. Which animal sleeps the most according to the histogram?
A.Koalas. B.Giraffes. C.Lions. D.Horses.
2. What do lions do when not hunting?
A.Eat food. B.Kill animals. C.Sleep or play. D.Stand up.

Passage 4
When people think of house cats, some words come out: “cute,” “slow,” “lovely” and so on. Do you know that humans (人类) have kept cats as pets for over 9,000 years?
Without any facts, we can only guess at how humans and cats were together at first. Most people believe that cats were one of the last animals to be tamed (被驯化) and kept as pets in early Middle East. They were tamed after other animals like cows, dogs, pigs, and sheep because cats couldn’t make delicious milk or help humans carry any things.
There are some things that cats can do well in, like getting mice, one of their favorite foods, and some other vermin that destroys (毁坏) the plants and is bad for humans. Some scientists said that this might be how cats and humans became friends. When early humans began farming for food, their food stores were a great place for hungry mice. Wild (野外的) cats weren’t going to let them run away, so they followed the mice into human villages. As time went on, cats could live with humans well. Finally, the wild cat of 9,000 years ago became the house cat of today.
Unlike dogs, cats could leave their human owners and go back to the wild at any time. They don’t lose their natural abilities (能力): their perfect seeing at night and hearing, their sense of smell and so on. House cats can also get their own food. Some people may even wake up to see little “gifts” from their cat, like dead birds or mice.
This kind of thing doesn’t make us angry too much, because there are now more than 600 million cats living in homes around the world.
1. Why do most people think cats were the last to be tamed?
A.Because people found them at a late time.
B.Because they were a little lazy at first.
C.Because they were not useful like other animals.
D.Because people didn’t like them very much.
2. What does “vermin” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.A kind of animal. B.A kind of food.
C.A kind of plant. D.A kind of village.
3. What can the cats do according to the text?
①See things at night. ②Help carry things. ③Get something to eat. ④Hear the sound well.
A.①②③ B.①③④ C.②③④ D.①②④
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.Cats and food. B.Cats and living places.
C.Cats and humans. D.Cats and other animals.
【答案】1. C 2. A 3. B 4. C
【导语】本文主要介绍了猫和人类是如何生活在一起的。
1. 细节理解题。根据“because cats couldn’t make delicious milk or help humans carry any things.”可知因为猫不能制造美味的牛奶,也不能帮助人类携带任何东西,所以猫是最后被驯服的动物之一。故选C。
2. 词义猜测题。根据“There are some things that cats can do well in, like getting mice, one of their favorite foods, and some other vermin that destroys (毁坏) the plants and is bad for humans”可知有些事情猫可以做得很好,比如老鼠,它们最喜欢的食物之一,以及其他一些破坏植物对人类有害的害虫,故此处划线部分是“一种动物”。故选A。
3. 细节理解题。根据“their perfect seeing at night and hearing, their sense of smell. House cats can also get their own food”可知它们在夜间的完美视觉和听觉,嗅觉等等,家猫也可以自己吃东西。故选B。
4. 最佳标题题。本文主要介绍了猫和人类是如何生活在一起的,以选项C“猫和人类”为标题最合适。故选C。

Finnish (芬兰的) schools are the best in Europe, some might say in the world. Only three countries—China, Singapore, and the Republic of Korea—can compete (竞争) with Finland in study. So, why is it so good?
Surprisingly, Finnish children spend less time in school than the children in many other countries. They don’t start school until the age of seven. Different from those in other countries, they also have their way of teaching. Rather than having separate subjects like history and geography, students learn everything together. There are seven things that Finnish students must learn in school:
·how to think clearly;
·how to understand and join in Finnish culture:
·how to use language and numbers;how to use technology;
·how to take care of themselves;
·how to be successful at work;

Try to think about this: you sit down and begin to eat a tomato. Just then, the tomato starts to shout! This may not sound real, but a new study showed that plants made sounds(声音) when they “felt” worried.
Scientists used ultrasonic microphones (超声波克风) to “hear” the sounds of tomato plants in boxes.
What did they do?
They listened to three groups of plants.
Group 1 and Group 2 made sounds 30 to 50 times(次数) every hour. Group 3 only made 1 sound every hour. “When tomatoes are not worried at all, they are very quiet,” Lilach Hadany from the study team said.
Who listens to these sounds?
Animals may listen to the sounds in the forest. For example, the sound can tell them that the plant is worried and not good for laying eggs(产卵) on. When an animal wants to eat a plant, it can also use the sound to pick which one to eat.

It keeps our skin soft. So, if we want nice skin, we can drink enough water.
③But how much water should we drink? For most of us, eight glasses of water every day may be OK. But those who live or work in warmer places need to drink more water. That is because they lose more water than us.
④And we have to know some rules about drinking water. After getting up or one hour before meals, it is helpful to drink a glass of water. Drink often before we feel thirsty. In fact, when we feel thirsty, the body is already short of water.
⑤You see, water is so good for us. So, remember to drink enough water every day to stay healthy!

Passage 12
Hello, my name is Malee, and I am from Thailand. Elephants are my favourite animals because they are strong and clever. They are a symbol of good luck in our country. They are our national animals, and we celebrate Thai Elephant Day on March 13th every year.
Elephants are different from other animals. They are huge in size. With their long trunks, they are able to carry heavy things. They also have big ears.
Elephants are similar to us in some ways. They are playful and love playing in the water. They have a good memory. For example, they can remember places with food and water after many years. They are also very kind. When an elephant is unwell, other elephants will help it. And the older elephants often look after the younger ones.
Elephants play an important part in Thai culture and life. Sadly, they are in danger now. People cut down many trees and destroy their natural homes—forests. Passage 13
Animals live in different places, and there are some “rules” in their worlds, just like we have rules in our lives.
In the forest, there are many kinds of animals, such as foxes, wolves, and eagles. The big and strong animals like wolves often look for food. They need to be careful not to enter the territory (领地) of other strong animals. This is a kind of “rule” in the forest. If they break it, there may be a fight.
In the ocean, sharks and whales are big animals. Sharks are good at hunting. They swim fast to catch smaller fish. But they also have to follow the “rule” of the ocean environment (环境). For example, they can’t overhunt in one place, or there won’t be enough food in the future.
At the zoo, we also have rules to protect the animals. We mustn’t feed the animals with our own food. This is because our food may be bad for their health. We should just watch them quietly and not make too much noise to disturb them.
We, as humans, also have a very important “rule” to follow. We need to protect the forests and oceans, which are the homes of these animals. We can’t cut down too many trees or pollute the water. If we break these rules, the animals will be in danger.

B.Because they were a little lazy at first.
C.Because they were not useful like other animals.
D.Because people didn’t like them very much.
2. What does “vermin” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.A kind of animal. B.A kind of food.

3. What can the cats do according to the text?
①See things at night. ②Help carry things. ③Get something to eat. ④Hear the sound well.
A.①②③ B.①③④ C.②③④ D.①②④
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.Cats and food. B.Cats and living places.
C.Cats and humans. D.Cats and other animals.
Passage 5
Finnish (芬兰的) schools are the best in Europe, some might say in the world. Only three countries—China, Singapore, and the Republic of Korea—can compete (竞争) with Finland in study. So, why is it so good?
Surprisingly, Finnish children spend less time in school than the children in many other countries. They don’t start school until the age of seven. Their school days are short, and their vacations are long. Studying in Finland is relaxing. Classrooms often look like living rooms. Students don’t wear uniforms or formal (正式的) ones and they call teachers by their first names. What’s more, they have only 30 minutes of homework each night.
Many people believe the key is that the teachers are so good. It’s a popular, well-paid job, and teachers are usually kind and not strict. Different from those in other countries, they also have their way of teaching. Rather than having separate subjects like history and geography, students learn everything together. There are seven things that Finnish students must learn in school:
·how to think clearly;
·how to understand and join in Finnish culture:
·how to use language and numbers;how to use technology;
·how to take care of themselves;
·how to be successful at work;
·how to be a good person for the future of Finland.
After finishing high school, Finnish students can also get into university (大学) for free This is very different from the United States, where the cost is around $30,000!

A.How’s the life of teachers in Finnish schools?
B.How do students learn in Finnish schools?
C.What are learning subjects in Finnish schools?
D.Why do Finnish students do well in study?
Passage 6
Where does the wind come from? What makes the wind move all the time?
Scientists tell us that the sun makes it move and blow. When the sun shines, it makes the land and the water hot. Then the land and water make the air hot. The warm air is light, so it goes up. The cool air moves in to take the place of (取代) the warm air. Warm and cool air move from place to place and that makes winds.
When the wind changes speed, it often brings a change in the weather. When the air moves slowly, it makes light winds. But when the air moves very fast, it makes big winds. It can also tell us a lot about what the weather will be like. Air over the land is dry and that over the water is wet. Winds from the land or the water bring different kinds of weather. Some winds bring sunny or dry weather and other bring rainy or wet weather.

Passage 7
The scientists also listened to other plants, like rice. They also made more sounds when they were worried. Scientists say the study can help farmers in the future. They can help the plants grow better by “hearing” how plants feel.

Passage 11
①About 70% of our body is water. We can live with no water for only about three days. So you can see water is really important for us!
②In fact, water helps our bodies in many ways. First, water keeps us healthy. Like trees and flowers need water to grow, our bodies need water to work well. Next, water is like a cleaner for our bodies. It can dust off our bodies and keep us healthy. Did you know that water also helps us stay cool when we feel hot? Our bodies get hot and sweaty (出汗的) when we play outside or run around. But drinking water cools us down and makes us feel good. It’s like a great drink on a hot day. Water is also good for our skin.
