“Thank you for your email. I have left to pursue my dream of knitting (织) sweaters for penguins in Antarctica and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office... until my penguin friends are happy.” This is part of an email received by a Chinese student studying in the UK from her teacher, which has recently become a hit online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The idea was started by the Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia.
The project began due to a serious oil pour near Phillip Island in the late 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins dropped significantly. When little penguins became covered in oil, they tried to clean themselves with their beaks (喙), but eating the oil could be deadly. The oil also damaged their feathers, making it difficult for them to swim or hunt for food.
To solve this problem, the foundation asked knitters worldwide to make sweaters for affected penguins. These sweaters could keep the penguins warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil.
The method has proven effective. In 2001, another oil pour occurred near Phillip Island. Thanks to the sweaters, 96 percent of the affected penguins were successfully saved.
However, some people have questioned the idea of animals wearing human-made clothing. Certain bird protection groups have raised concerns that these sweaters might put more stress on the penguins’ bodies.
In response, the foundation explained that the sweaters are only a short-term solution and will not be used once the penguins recover.
To guarantee the penguins are protected and wearing appropriate clothes, the foundation has provided detailed instructions for knitters. For example, the total length of the finished sweater should be no more than 18cm, the width across the body no more than 12cm and the width of the bottom opening no more than 11cm.
8. What is the purpose of mentioning the teacher’s email?
A. To criticize the teacher for abandoning academic work.
B. To emphasize the popularity of knitting in Antarctica.
C. To introduce the topic in a humorous and engaging way.
D. To compare human hobbies with animal protection.
9. How does oil harm penguins according to the passage?
A. Poisons penguins when they clean it with their beaks.
B. Makes penguins’ feathers much too heavy to swim.
C. Causes penguins to lose their ability to reproduce.
D. Attracts hunters to attack oil-covered penguins.
10. What concern did bird protection groups raise about the sweaters?
A. Restricting penguins’ movement. B. Being too expensive to produce.
C. Polluting the ocean environment. D. Generating pressure to penguins.
11 Which of the following is the best title?
A. Knitting for Penguins: A Teacher’s Career B. Penguin Sweaters: Safe or Stressful?
C. Rules for Penguin Knitting D. Small Sweaters, Big Rescue
C 9. A 10. D 11. D

根据第一段““Thank you for your email. I have left to pursue my dream of knitting (织) sweaters for penguins in Antarctica and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office... until my penguin friends are happy.” This is part of an email received by a Chinese student studying in the UK from her teacher, which has recently become a hit online.(“谢谢你的邮件。我已经离开去追求我的梦想,为南极洲的企鹅编织毛衣,不再为经济学院工作。我将不在办公室……直到我的企鹅朋友们开心为止。”这是一名在英国留学的中国学生从她的老师那里收到的一封电子邮件的一部分,这封邮件最近在网上引起了轰动)”可知,文章通过一个幽默的电子邮件引出了为企鹅编织毛衣的主题,这种方式既幽默又吸引人。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“When little penguins became covered in oil, they tried to clean themselves with their beaks (喙), but eating the oil could be deadly.(当小企鹅被石油覆盖时,它们试图用喙清理自己,但吃了石油可能是致命的)”可知,企鹅用喙清理石油时,会中毒。故选A。
根据第六段“Certain bird protection groups have raised concerns that these sweaters might put more stress on the penguins’ bodies.(一些鸟类保护组织担心,这些毛衣可能会给企鹅的身体带来更大的压力)”可知,一些鸟类保护组织担心,这些毛衣可能会给企鹅的身体带来额外的压力。
根据第四段“To solve this problem, the foundation asked knitters worldwide to make sweaters for affected penguins. These sweaters could keep the penguins warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil.(为了解决这个问题,基金会要求世界各地的编织者为受影响的企鹅制作毛衣。这些毛衣可以让企鹅在清洁过程中保持温暖,防止它们吃油)”以及这篇文章通过一个幽默的电子邮件引出了为南极企鹅编织毛衣的慈善项目。这个项目由澳大利亚的企鹅基金会发起,旨在帮助因石油泄漏而受影响的企鹅,通过毛衣保护它们免受石油污染。故D选项“小毛衣,大救援”最符合文章标题。故选D。
D
Nearly half of all jobs are at risk from automation and computers in the next 20 years. The next generation will need new skills to survive in an AI world. Literacy, numeracy, science and languages are all important. Still, they share one thing in common: computers will be far better than humans at processing these forms of explicit (显性的) knowledge.
The risk is that the education system will be churning out humans who are no more than second-rate computers, so if the focus of education continues to be on passing on explicit knowledge across the generations, we will be in trouble. The AI challenge is about building skills that AI cannot imitate. These are essential human skills such as teamwork, leadership, listening, dealing with people and managing crises and conflict.
These are all forms of tacit (默示的) knowledge, not explicit knowledge. They are know-how skills, not know-what skills. Know-what is easy to spread across generations and is easy to measure. Know-how skills are the opposite. The employability skills gap is already large, and AI will only make it larger.
University technical colleges explicitly address employability, focusing on developing engineers, technicians and future scientists. “Studio schools” started in 2010 with the intent of blending vocational (职业的) and academic education with work experience. Of the 50 schools started, 16 have already announced plans to close.
Evaluation and league tables are a barrier to success. The school accountability framework keeps changing, but there is always some variation in measuring how well schools transfer know-what skills. Tom Ravenscroft challenges this approach, “We are doubling down on the idea that if we get children to know things and repeat them in a certain way in an exam, then we are setting them up for success in life.” Success depends on equipping the next generation with human skills that even AI cannot imitate: creativity, innovation, and dealing with conflict and uncertainty. We are not ready for this. We have not even started to get prepared.
12. What does the underlined word “churning out” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Ranking fairly. B. Teaching to perfection.
C. Inspiring with great care. D. Producing in large quantities.
13. What is the main focus of “studio schools”?
A. Theory & Practice. B. Skills & Development.
C. Basic knowledge. D. Professional Training.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the current education system in relation to AI?
A. Optimistic. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The limitations of the traditional education system.
B. The function of AI in reforming the education system.
C. The urgency of adapting education to the AI challenge.
D. The pioneering project on combining education reform and AI.
D 13. A 14. B 15. C

根据第一段“Nearly half of all jobs are at risk from automation and computers in the next 20 years. The next generation will need new skills to survive in an AI world. Literacy, numeracy, science and languages are all important. Still, they share one thing in common: computers will be far better than humans at processing these forms of explicit (显性的) knowledge(在未来20年,近一半的工作面临自动化和计算机的威胁。下一代需要新技能才能在人工智能世界中生存。读写能力、计算能力、科学和语言都很重要。不过,它们有一个共同点:在处理这些显性知识方面,计算机将远比人类出色)”以及第二段“The risk is that the education system will be … humans who are no more than second-rate computers, so if the focus of education continues to be on passing on explicit knowledge across the generations, we will be in trouble(风险在于,教育系统将大量……
根据第二段“The risk is that the education system will be churning out humans who are no more than second-rate computers, so if the focus of education continues to be on passing on explicit knowledge across the generations, we will be in trouble(风险在于,教育系统将大量生产出不过是二流计算机的人,所以如果教育的重点继续放在代代相传的显性知识上,我们就会陷入麻烦)”以及最后一段“Evaluation and league tables are a barrier to success. We have not even started to get prepared(评估和排名表是成功的障碍。
根据第一段“Nearly half of all jobs are at risk from automation and computers in the next 20 years. The next generation will need new skills to survive in an AI world. Literacy, numeracy, science and languages are all important. Still, they share one thing in common: computers will be far better than humans at processing these forms of explicit (显性的) knowledge(在未来20年,近一半的工作面临自动化和计算机的威胁。下一代需要新技能才能在人工智能世界中生存。读写能力、计算能力、科学和语言都很重要。不过,它们有一个共同点:在处理这些显性知识方面,计算机将远比人类出色)”、第二段“The risk is that the education system will be churning out humans who are no more than second-rate computers, so if the focus of education continues to be on passing on explicit knowledge across the generations, we will be in trouble(风险在于,教育系统将大量生产出不过是二流计算机的人,所以如果教育的重点继续放在代代相传的显性知识上,我们就会陷入麻烦)”以及最后一段“Success depends on equipping the next generation with human skills that even AI cannot imitate: creativity, innovation, and dealing with conflict and uncertainty. We are not ready for this. We have not even started to get prepared(成功取决于为下一代配备即使是人工智能也无法模仿的人类技能:创造力、创新能力以及处理冲突和不确定性的能力。
Tablescapes (桌面景观) are creatively designed table arrangements or decorations for the center of a table, which show or highlight a specific object or collection. Usually, it’s dinner tables that are transformed into tablescapes. ____16____
Tableseaping allows people to express their creativity by adding a personal touch. This is often achieved through the use of valuable collections or specialized themes. ____17____ Themes can be based upon a particular event, season, hobby, or collection. Finding a suitable theme for tablescape displays depends on personal preference as well as the style of its surroundings.
____18____ Each item within a tablescape relates to other elements around it. While the objects in tablescapes do not necessarily have to match perfectly, they should stay in harmony with each other or make each other more attractive.
When it comes to organizing the selected objects for tablescapes, the easiest method is to think in terms of levels. ____19____ The other relatively unimportant ones include the spaces both above and below the table. Including similar or repeated items in all of these levels will help pull everything together.
When the appropriate tablescape design is carried out, the surrounding area should fit in. The highlighted table arrangement should stand out in a pleasing manner rather than looking like a mess. As everyone’s view can be different, not all tablescapes will hold the same appeal. ____20____ It’ll create a comfortable appearance regardless of someone else’s personal taste.
A. But items like bookshelves can also make it.
B. The most important level is the tabletop itself.
C. Tablescapes normally have three different levels.
D. That’s why balance and harmony are so important.
E. Once a theme is chosen, collect proper related items.
F. Themes are especially important when designing tablescapes.
G. However, maintaining a balance within the tablescape theme is necessary.
A 17. F 18. E 19. B 20. G
根据前文“Tablescapes (桌面景观) are creatively designed table arrangements or decorations for the center of a table, which show or highlight a specific object or collection. Usually, it’s dinner tables that are transformed into tablescapes.(桌面景观是创造性地设计的桌子安排或装饰在桌子的中心,它显示或突出一个特定的对象或集合。通常,餐桌被改造成桌面景观)”可知,此处是在介绍什么是桌面景观,以及什么能改造成桌面景观,A项“But items like bookshelves can also make it.(但像书架这样的物品也会产生这种效果)”也是在讲述什么能改造成桌面景观,符合文意,且和前文构成转折关系。故选A项。
根据前文“Tableseaping allows people to express their creativity by adding a personal touch. This is often achieved through the use of valuable collections or specialized themes.(桌面景观可以让人们通过添加个人元素来表达他们的创造力。这通常是通过使用有价值的集合或专门的主题来实现的)”可知,本段主要讲述桌面景观的主题,所以F项“Themes are especially important when designing tablescapes.(在设计桌面景观时,主题尤其重要)”符合本段主题,是对前文进一步说明,并引出下文“Themes can be based upon a particular event, season, hobby, or collection.(主题可以基于特定的事件、季节、爱好或收藏)”。故选F项。
根据后文“Each item within a tablescape relates to other elements around it.(桌面景观中的每个物品都与它周围的其他元素相关)”可知,本段讲述桌面景观中的物品,所以E项“Once a theme is chosen, collect proper related items.(一旦选定主题,收集适当的相关物品)”符合本段主题,承接上文选定主题,并引出下文收集物品。故选E项。
根据前文“When it comes to organizing the selected objects for tablescapes, the easiest method is to think in terms of levels.(在为桌面景观组织所选对象时,最简单的方法是从级别的角度考虑)”以及后文“The other relatively unimportant ones include the spaces both above and below the table.(其他相对不重要的包括桌子上方和下方的空间)”可知,本段讲述可以按照级别来组织所选对象,后文讲述不重要的地方,所以空处应是重要级别,所以B项“The most important level is the tabletop itself.(最重要的关卡是桌面本身)”符合文意。故选B项。
根据前文“As everyone’s view can be different, not all tablescapes will hold the same appeal.(由于每个人的观点都可能不同,因此并非所有桌面景观都具有相同的吸引力)”以及后文“It’ll create a comfortable appearance regardless of someone else’s personal taste.(不管别人的个人品味如何,它都会给人一种舒适的感觉)”可知,前文讲述每个人品味不同,不可能吸引所有人,后文说都会给人一种舒适的感觉;由此推知,空处内容与前文构成转折关系,且提出一种所有人都会接受的方法,所以G项“However, maintaining a balance within the tablescape theme is necessary.(但是,在桌面景观主题中保持平衡是必要的)”符合文意,和前文构成转折关系,引出下文。

It was a cold winter Monday morning. Manu, an eight-year-old, was sleeping comfortably in his bedroom upstairs. Mondays are usually very difficult for him after a weekend break from his school.
“Manu, wake up!” shouted Manu’s mother, Akhila. Manu pulled the blanket over himself and pretended to ignore his mother’s repeated attempts to wake him up.
“Manu! Please wake up! It’s already 6 o’clock and your school bus will be here by 7 o’clock.” Manu continued sleeping. Finally, Akhila walked up to the bedroom. “Manu, wake up! It’s time you at least learned to wake up on time and do your morning chores without so much effort from my side.” said his mother.
Finally, Manu got out of bed and started getting ready for school lazily. The school bus was already honking(按喇叭) in front of his house while Manu was brushing his teeth. Akhila requested the driver to wait for a few minutes. She quickly helped Manu get ready and helped him get to the school bus.
“Thank God. Manu did not miss his bus today!” She sighed. Akhila is really concerned about her son. Manu will not do anything on time, whether it is walking up in the morning or any of his daily tasks. It is getting very difficult for Akhila to get her son to be disciplined.
Akhila thought to herself, “I need to work out a plan to help him to be self-disciplined.” Repeated advice and warnings had not changed him.
Manu was back from school at 4 o’clock. Akhila asked him to finish his homework first. Manu, as usual, ignored his mother and continued playing with his pet dog. Finally, with a lot of effort, the mother helped him complete his homework. Manu had his maths test the next day.
The next day, everything was usually expected and there was no effort from Akhila to wake up her son. The time was seven and Akhila had still made no effort to wake up Manu. The school bus honked and Akhila, unlike her usual self, asked the bus driver to leave.
Paragraph 1:
Manu finally woke up at around 9 o’clock.

Paragraph 2:
Manu quickly got ready for school without any effort from his mother.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Manu finally woke up at around 9 o’clock. He looked at the clock and ran to the kitchen, crying out, “Mom! Why didn’t you wake me up? I am really late for school.” He couldn’t stop crying. “I have a maths test today and Madam Mangat will punish me if I miss her class and the test!” Madam Mangat was the strictest teacher in Manu’s school. “Mom, what should I do now? Please help. I promise I will wake up every day on time.” Akhila could no longer see her son crying and said, “Just promise me one more thing that you will do your daily task on time without pestering you to do it.” “Sure Mom! I promise!” Akhila told him she would send him to school and Mrs. Mangat would give him another chance to take the test. Manu hugged his mother. “Mom! Thank you.”
Manu quickly got ready for school without any effort from his mother. On the way to the school, there was silence in the car but a smile on Akhila’s face. The scene the next day at their house was a little different. At 6, Akhila walked out of her room, only to find Manu packing his schoolbag! Everything ready, he went up to Akhila and took her hand, saying, “Mom, I will give the driver a surprise today.” Hearing the smile in his voice, Akhila nodded approvingly and kissed him on the forehead. That morning, no hurry, no pestering and pampering, no continuous honking. It was the first time that Manu had tasted the fruit of discipline. He would taste it every day!

A. Theory & Practice. B. Skills & Development.
C. Basic knowledge. D. Professional Training.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the current education system in relation to AI?
A. Optimistic. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The limitations of the traditional education system.
B. The function of AI in reforming the education system.
C. The urgency of adapting education to the AI challenge.
D. The pioneering project on combining education reform and AI.
