B Miriam Lancewood, from the Netherlands, has a university degree, but she doesn’t have a fixed (固定的) home or a job. She doesn’t have a car or a computer or a mobile phone. And she’s very happy this way. Miriam was living in New Zealand, in 2010. Once she began to ask herself: Could she live without technology, electricity or other people? She was not sure about that, so she and her husband Peter decided to have a try and live in the wilderness (野外). They have lived right in the middle of the wilderness of New Zealand’s North Island. They live mostly in a tent or a simple hut with no tools. Sometimes, when they run out of things they need, they go back to town. Miriam sometimes plays the guitar and sings on the street to make a little money or they don’t need anything from anyone. In 2017, a book of Miriam came out—Woman in the Wilderness: tells what she learned about nature, other people and herself. Life in the wildness taught her how to manage with simple things, how to be alone, how to get bored, how to be afraid. She also talks about how she had to learn to use a bow and arrow to catch animals with, and the first time she killed a goat with them. Miriam and her husband Peter met in India. They spent two months in the Himalayas, backpacking and meeting people who lived very simply in the mountains. That attracted (吸引) them both and once they were back in New Zealand, the idea of living in the wilderness became possible and finally real. She does not regret choosing this way of life, “If people don’t agree with the way I live, well, it doesn’t matter, does it?” she says. 19. What do we know about Miriam according to the text? A. She and her husband lived in wilderness before 2010. B She was born in New Zealand and moved to the Netherlands. C. She got the idea of living in the wild when she wrote the book. D. She makes money by playing the guitar and singing on the street. 20. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. What Miriam’s book is about. B. How Miriam’s book came out. C. When Miriam wrote the book. D. Why Miriam wrote the book. 21. What does the underlined word that in Paragraph 5 refer to? A. Backpacking in Netherlands. B. A simple mountain lifestyle. C. The animals in the wilderness. D. The beauty of the North Island. 22. What can we infer from what Miriam said in the last paragraph? A. She hopes more people follow her lifestyle. B. She is worried about what others think of her. C. She wants to change people’s thoughts about her. D. She doesn’t care about others’ opinions on her life. C These days, many cities are going smart. Singapore, Barcelona, and Oslo are leading the way with their own cool smart city ideas. Singapore is already a nation of sensors (传感器). They are everywhere. One area that is controlled by the sensors is transportation. They are on all buses, trains and taxis and are used to help make sure the traffic runs smoothly. They can also predict where accidents are likely to happen. But the sensors are also used in other parts of Singaporean life. For example, they can notice if someone is dropping litter or smoking in a public place. Barcelona has sensors to help watch the levels of air and noise pollution and to turn on and off its street lighting, making sure no energy goes to waste. For example, it has a system which checks the water levels in the grounds and predicts future rainfall, which allows it to control the city’s water usage more successfully. It also has a smart waste disposal (垃圾处理) system. People throw their waste into special bins. Then the waste is moved to underground storage (存储). Here it is sorted and recycled, and some is burned, producing energy for heating systems. Oslo is another city with big green plans. However, it also uses smart technology to help take care of its old people. For example, it has put sensors in the homes of people who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease (阿兹海默症). The technology allows doctors to check in with their patients to make sure all is well. It also reminds the patients of daily tasks, such as taking their medicine, by sending messages. Such technology means more old people can live in their own homes for longer. 23. What can sensors in Singapore do? A. They can help people collect the litter. B. They can be used in people’s private cars. C. They can predict traffic accidents’ locations. D. They can find people smoking in their homes. 24. What can we know about the smart technology in Oslo? A. It can control the city’s water usage. B. It is used to cut down noise pollution. C. It is mainly used to check the doctors. D. It helps take good care of old people. 25. How does the writer introduce smart city ideas? A. By listing what and how technology is used. B. By asking people’s opinions on smart systems. C. By telling problems of smart systems in some cities. D. By comparing the good and bad sides of city systems. 26. Why does the writer write this text? A. To compare the pollution in different cities. B. To tell about people’s daily life in some cities. C. To introduce the smart technology in three cities. D. To talk about the difficulties in making cities smart. D Imagine there’s a thing that can make both our bodies and minds healthy. And it’s always free for everyone. It’s called laughter. Good for your body Laughter does several good things to your body. Firstly, laughing is good for our blood pressure and helps lower the risk of a heart problem. Secondly, it makes your body feel less stressed—a person’s muscles (肌肉) can be more relaxed for as long as 45 minutes after a good laugh. What’s more, laughing burns calories (卡路里), too—not many, but they, every little helps to keep you healthier! Good for your mind Having a good sense of humour helps to keep a good state of mind, too. When your friend tells you something funny and it makes you laugh or simply smile, you relax a bit. And it helps us deal with difficult feelings like sadness, worry or anger. What laughter does is to allow us to get a better opinion on our problems, and then we can deal with them better. It’s no surprise that many people find that laughter therapy (欢笑疗法) helps with their problems. Good for your relationships You may have seen comedy shows with fake (虚假的) laughter. Some people don’t like it. Why do they add this fake laughter? Because they know laughter is contagious. If you hear others laugh, you might laugh too. Laughter truly brings people closer. It often comes not only from shows or funny stories, but from being with those you love and having fun. It is said that sharing laughter improves our relationships, like with families and partners. So, all you have to do is to laugh! Find things to laugh about, be with the people who make you laugh, and laugh for no reason at all as often as you can. Laughter surely is one of the best medicines. 27. How is laughter good for our body? A. It makes our blood pressure go up. B. It increases the risk of heart problem. C. It can make muscles relaxed for an hour. D. It helps burn calories to keep us healthier. 28. If your friend is feeling down and stressed, which is the best thing for you to do? A. Share serious articles to make your friend think. B. Take your friend to a quiet place for a long walk. C. Get together with your friend and tell funny stories. D. Ask your friend to watch a documentary about problems. 29. What does the underlined word “contagious” probably mean? A. Being not true. B. Easy to spread. C. Making people angry. D. Hard to understand. 30. What is the best title of this text? A. The Power of Fake Laughter B. How to Stay in Good Health C. Ways to Laugh With Your Friends D. B. She was born in New Zealand and moved to the Netherlands. C. She got the idea of living in the wild when she wrote the book. D. She makes money by playing the guitar and singing on the street. 20. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. What Miriam’s book is about. B. How Miriam’s book came out. C. When Miriam wrote the book. D. The beauty of the North Island. 22. What can we infer from what Miriam said in the last paragraph? A. She hopes more people follow her lifestyle. B. She is worried about what others think of her. C. 24 What can we know about the smart technology in Oslo? 【答案】23. C 24. D 25. A 26.
