My good friend
One Friday morning in September, our teacher, Mrs. Ferrara, told us that a new student was joining the class. “Her name is Luz,” said Mrs. Ferrara. “She is from the Lakeland School. She is interested in maths and music.”
Luz walked into our classroom on Monday morning. She was using a folding cane(折叠杖). I think she used it to make sure her feet would not knock into things. Mrs. Ferrara gave her a seat in the front of the room. Her desk was far from the window. Maybe the bright light near the window made trouble for her.
Some of the children wanted to help Luz get in line for lunch. She refused quietly: “Thanks, but I don’t need help.” Jose tried to help her walk downstairs to lunch, but again she answered, “Thank you, I don’t need help.”
I introduced myself at lunch. “Hi, Luz, I am Sasha, and I came from Russia last year.” She replied softly, “Hi, Sasha. I was born in California, but my parents came from Mexico. ”
Luz seemed to keep away from us. I thought she looked a little sad. One day, I dared to ask. “Why are you sad, Luz?”She looked at me and didn’t say anything for a moment. Then she said, “I miss my friends in my old school. They knew me already. They knew what I could do. They knew when I needed help and when I didn’t.”
In October, things began to get better. It was time for chorus (合唱队) to begin practicing. Luz and I both joined. Luz had a great voice! When clubs were announced, Luz chose Math Club. She was a math whiz! Soon Luz was helping others in the class who had difficulty with math. Luz looked happier now. She talked more.
Luz became very special to me. We talked and shared our secrets during break. We visited after school. Sometimes on weekends, our families went out together. We became good friends. I could tell Luz anything. She could keep secrets. She was a good friend.

Believe it or not, my friends often come first in my heart because I want to make them happy. If anyone asks me for help, I always say, “Yes!” “Can you help me with English practice?” Grace asked me on the first day after she became my deskmate. “Of course,” I answered without hesitation. Grace has been working really hard on her studies and she needed my help though I didn’t have much time left for her.
One day after school, while I was doing lots of homework, Grace’s phone call came. She complained (抱怨) a lot and it made me feel bored, but I still felt bad about saying no. When Grace ended the call, it was 0:15 a.m. I still had homework left but I wanted to sleep. This was bad for a junior high school student in Grade Eight who is going to take an important exam later.
Finally I began to cry. I felt so tired and realized that the stress (压力) had an effect (影响) on my health. I tried to get myself out. Studying is more important than other things, so Grace has to come the second. It’s now important for me to say no, no, no.
“Can you give me a hand?” Grace asked. “Sorry… I just have to go over (复习) my maths notes,” I answered. “All right. It’s up to you,” she said. I felt completely relaxed when I heard her reply. Anyway, it’s not so hard to say no at all.

Everyone needs friends. As the old saying goes, “Friendship is one mind in two bodies.” But how can you find a real friendship and keep it? The Care and Keeping of Friends written by American author Nadine Bernard Westcott tells young students some smart ways to find friends.
First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should do his or her best to help you. To make friends, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.
But things cannot always be happy. Even best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, you can have an honest talk. If he or she doesn’t want to talk with you, you may write a letter. Nadine says there are three steps about being friends again: tell him or her how you are feeling, say what you have done wrong, and explain why you did this or that.
The book also gives advice on some small but important things like celebrating your friend’s success. Even if you haven’t had a real friend before, you will start to think about having one if you read this book, because the book tells that friendship is the most important thing in your life.

Trouble in the Cloakroom
“I hate them! I really hate them!” shouted Tom angrily.
Tara and Ziggy looked at their friend. They couldn’t believe it. He was really angry!
“Arjun is OK now,” said Tara, trying to calm Tom down.
The three friends were in the park after school. They were talking about their friend Arjun. Arjun was the youngest in the class and today two bullies (横行霸道者) pushed him against a locker and hurt him. Arjun fell and cut his head. Now he has five stitches (划痕) in his forehead.
Heston High School was a nice, peaceful (平静的) place until Brian and Mark arrived a few months ago. Brian and Mark were bullies and their favourite trouble place was the school cloakroom (卫生间). That morning they hurt Arjun, maybe because he was smaller and younger than everyone else in the class.
The teachers knew that there were some bullying incidents (事件) at school. But most kids didn’t want to report the incidents. So bullying at Heston High wasn’t an official problem.
“Brian and Mark must pay!” repeated Tom. He was walking around in circles and hitting the palm of his left hand with his right fist.
“Can’t you see? You’re behaving like the bullies,” Tara said sadly. Ziggy looked at Tara. He knew Tom very well. Tom wasn’t usually violent (暴力的). In fact, he usually solved problems in a polite way. Tara hated bullies and she didn’t like Tom being so angry. Tom hated bullies, too. It made him afraid.
“No, I’m not. I’m not like Brian and Mark,” replied Tom. “And I’m going to stop them,” he said.
“Bullying is not cool,” said Ziggy, waving his arms like he was dancing.
“We have to tell someone about this,” said Tara. “Arjun was hurt.”
During the incident, Arjun cut his head. When the bullies saw the blood (血), they ran away quickly. Arjun called for help and a teacher came and took him straight to the hospital. But Arjun didn’t tell the teacher about the bullies. When the head teacher asked him what happened, he just said, “I fell and cut my head.”

To be honest, I have felt much happier since learning to say no. I have more time to spend on my study at present. I still try my best to help others, but sometimes I say no because I know everyone has a limit.

33.A good friend should ________.
A.have a lot of money B.be good-looking C.be kind and patient D.be successful
