It was one of those terribly hot days in Baltimore. Needless to say, it was too hot to do anything outside. But it was also scorching in our apartment. This was 1962, and I would not live in a place with an air conditioner for another ten years. So my brother and I decided to leave the apartment to find someplace indoors. He suggested we could see a movie. It was a brilliant plan.
Movie theaters were one of the few places you could sit all day and — most important — sit in air conditioning. In those days, you could buy one ticket and sit through two movies. Then, the theater would show the same two movies again. If you wanted to, you could sit through them twice. Most people did not do that, but the manager at our theater, Mr. Bellow, did not mind if you did.
That particular day, my brother and I sat through both movies twice, trying to escape the heat. We bought three bags of popcorn and three sodas each. Then, we sat and watched The Music Man followed by The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. We’d already seen the second movie once before. It had been at the theater since January, because Mr. Bellow loved anything with John Wayne in it.
We left the theater around 8, just before the evening shows began. But we returned the next day and saw the same two movies again, twice more. And we did it the next day too. Finally, on the fourth day, the heat wave broke.
Still, to this day I can sing half the songs in The Music Man and recite half of John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart’s dialogue from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance! Those memories are some of the few I have of the heat wave of 1962. They’re really memories of the screen, not memories of my life.
4. In which year did the author first live in a place with an air conditioner?
A. 1952. B. 1962. C. 1972. D. 1982.
5. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The heat.
B. The theater.
C. The Music Man.
D. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
6. Why did the author and his brother see the same movies several times?
A. The two movies were really wonderful.
B. They wanted to avoid the heat outside.
C. The manager of the theater was friendly.
D. They liked the popcorn and the soda at the theater.
7. Which of the following is True according to the last paragraph?
A. The author turned out to be a great singer.
B. The author enjoyed the heat wave of 1962.
C. The author’s life has been changed by the two movies.
D. The author considers the experience at the theater unforgettable.

Researchers have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system to help historians renovate the writings and identify when and where they were written.
Many ancient populations used writings, also known as inscriptions (碑文), to document different parts of their lives. The inscriptions have been found on materials such as rock, ceramic (陶瓷) and metal. The writings often contained valuable information about how ancient people lived and how they structured their societies. But in many cases, the objects containing such inscriptions have been damaged over the centuries. This left major parts of the inscriptions missing and difficult to identify and understand. In addition, many of the inscribed objects were moved from areas where they were first created. This makes it difficult for scientists to discover when and where the writings were made.
The new AI-based method serves as a technological tool to help researchers repair missing inscriptions and estimate (估算) the true origins of the records. The researchers, led by Alphabet's AI company DeepMind, call their tool Ithaca. The team said it trained Ithaca on the largest collection of data containing Greek inscriptions. Feeding this data into the system is designed to help the tool use past writings to predict missing letters and words in damaged inscriptions. The researchers reported that in experiments with damaged writings, Ithaca was able to correctly predict missing inscription elements 62 percent of the time. In addition, the tool was 71 percent correct in identifying where the inscriptions first came from. And, the system was able to effectively date writings to within 30 years.
When historians work on their own, the success rate for restoring damaged inscriptions is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent. The team is currently working on other versions of Ithaca trained on other ancient languages. DeepMind has launched (发行) a free, interactive tool based on the system for use by researchers, educators, museum workers and the public.
8. Which can replace the underlined word “renovate” in paragraph 1?
A. Adopt. B. Recover. C. Collect. D. Translate.
9. Which reason for the ancient inscriptions' being hard to recognize is mentioned?
A. The wars in the past. B. The development of industry.
C. The objects' being damaged. D. The extinction of language.
10. What conclusion can we draw from the last paragraph?
A. Ithaca currently recognizes only English.
B. Ithaca has great market development potential.
C. Ithaca can completely replace historians in the future.
D. Ithaca cannot bring any profit to its development company.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Shortcut to Ancient Inscriptions
B. Who Will Be the Historians' Right-Hand Man?
C. The Mysterious Contents of Ancient Languages
D. AI Used to Fill in Missing Words in Ancient Writings

D
Summer brings flowers and dirt and barbeque smoke. In the most wintery places, there isn’t much outside on cold days except snow, strong wind and cars warming up. Pine needles(松针), wood smoke and snow—these are the smells of winter, and for people who live with different seasons, wintery weather brings its own set of olfactory(嗅觉的) experiences. But why does the cold of winter smell different from the heat of summer?
One reason is that odor molecules(气味分子) move much more slowly as the air temperature drops, said Pamela Dalton, an olfactory scientist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. That means that there are simply fewer smells to smell on a cold, crisp day than there are on a hot and humid one. It’s the same reason why hot soup smells more than cold soup does and why the garbage truck leaves behind the strongest smells on steamy summer days.
What’s more, our noses don’t work quite well when the surrounding air is cold, Dalton said. In experiments that require biopsies(活组织检查) of olfactory receptors that lie deep inside the nose, researchers at Monell have discovered that the receptors “bury themselves a little more deeply in the nose in winter,” she said, “possibly as a protective response against cold, dry air.”
“There is a strong psychological factor in our sense of smell,” Alan Hirsch, a neurologist and psychiatrist in Chicago, added, “and what we expect to smell has a big influence on what we actually smell.” In The Invalid’s Story by Mark Twain, for example, a man is stuck on a train next to what he thinks is a rotting(腐烂的) dead body but is actually a box of cheese that smells extremely unpleasant. So strongly affected by the smell, he spends too long looking for fresh air on the freezing platform and develops a fever that ends up killing him. “What you think of a smell will have powerful effects on you whether you like it or whatever you think it to be,” Hirsch said. “So, if you go outside in winter and you are used to smelling snow or nuts in the fire or whatever you happen to smell outside, that’s what you will interpret smells to be.”
To cope with lack of smells in winter, many people try to burn more candles with pleasant smells, cook more sweet stews(炖菜)and bake more cookies, which creates a greater contrast between indoor and outdoor environments. “You’re probably fond of indoor smells in winter,” Dalton said. “Doors are closed, and windows are closed. We concentrate on the smells of cooking and living.”
12. According to the second paragraph, Pamela Dalton will probably agree that ____.
A. there are not many smells available to be smelled in winter
B. hot soup is more popular with people in winter than cold soup
C. garbage truck is easier to break down in cold winter
D. air temperature affects the direction in which smells spread greatly
13. The author used the story written by Mark Twain to show that ______.
A. one can easily feel terrible smells in a small space
B. no one can survive when there is lack of fresh air
C. one’s mind and thoughts can affect his sense of smell
D. one’s opinion on smells is quite different from others’
14. Which of the following is NOT a measure people take to deal with lack of smells in winter?
A. Closing windows. B. Cooking stews.
C. Burning candles. D. Baking cookies.
15. How is the passage organized?
(P: Paragraph)
A. B.
C. D.
A 13. C 14. A 15. D
That means that there are simply fewer smells to smell on a cold, crisp day than there are on a hot and humid one. 故选A。
根据第三段第一句“There is a strong psychological factor in our sense of smell,” Alan Hirsch, a neurologist and psychiatrist in Chicago, added, “and what we expect to smell has a big influence on what we actually smell.” “我们的嗅觉中有很强的心理因素,”芝加哥的神经学家和精神病学家Alan Hirsch补充说,“我们想要闻到的气味对我们实际闻到的气味有很大影响。”,接着用Mark Twain的故事来举例说明这一观点,是为了详细说明一个人的思想可以影响他的嗅觉。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。最后一段第一句To cope with lack of smells in winter, many people try to burn more candles with pleasant smells, cook more sweet stews(炖菜)and bake more cookies可知为了应对冬天气味的缺乏,人们试着燃烧更多有香味的蜡烛,煮更多的甜炖菜,烤更多的饼干,选项中只有A选项:关窗户没有提到。故选A。
But why does the cold of winter smell different from the heat of summer?
The Science of Risk-Seeking
Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. ____16____ Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work?
The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. ____17____ As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.
So why aren’t we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. ___18___
No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. ____19____ To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.
___20___ For the risk-seekers a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.
As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.
A It all depends on your character.
B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.
C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.
D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.
E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.
F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.
G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.
F 17. C 18. A 19. E 20. G

Jenny frowned (皱眉) as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
“Moving here was a stupid idea,” Jenny complained mostly to herself.
“What’s that?” her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots.
“Nothing,” Jenny mumbled (咕哝). The girl had been angry about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn’t been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn’t know, and it seemed like the students hadn’t even noticed her. The upcoming school party made things even worse — just the thought of being surrounded by unfamiliar faces and having no one to talk with drove her crazy! Jenny sighed deeply and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the grand opening, Jenny’s parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Jenny was happy as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Jenny’s age. As she filled their glasses, Jenny realized the twins were in her class. Jenny lowered her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Jenny’s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.
“Honey, what are you doing back here? We need you out front with the customers.”
“Mom, I don’t want to be out there. There are kids from school!”
“So?” her mother asked. “That’s good! Go to take them some fortune cookies and say hello!” she said to Jenny, pointing at the fortune cookies paper which read, “Many friends are found with a single smile.”

根据第一段中“Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days (她们家刚从旧金山搬到这里,买下了一家小餐馆,准备在接下来的几天内盛大开业。)”
The girl had been angry about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints. (“没什么,”珍妮咕哝着。这个女孩对搬家一直很生气,但她的父母已经做出了决定,现在正忙着为大开张做准备,没时间听她的抱怨)”可知,珍妮对于搬家这个决定感到生气,本空用形容词angry“生气的”,作表语。故填②angry。
③考查动词时态。根据文章第五段中“She found it hard to talk to people she didn’t know, and it seemed like the students hadn’t even noticed her (她觉得很难和不认识的人交谈,而且好像学生们根本就没有注意到她。)”
根据文章第六段中“On the day of the grand opening, Jenny’s parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red (在大开张的那天,珍妮的父母满面笑容,欢迎顾客们走进这家以金色和红色装饰得焕然一新的餐馆。)” 故填④were welcoming或welcomed。
根据文章第六段中“Even Jenny was happy as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water (就连珍妮也很高兴,她忙前忙后,安排客人入座,分发菜单,倒满一大杯水。)”
根据文章第六段中“Even Jenny was happy as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water (就连珍妮也很高兴,她忙前忙后,安排客人入座,分发菜单,倒满一大杯水。)”
根据文章第七段中“As she filled their glasses, Jenny realized the twins were in her class (当她给她们倒水时,珍妮发现这对双胞胎是她的同班同学。)” 故填⑦recognised/recognized。
根据文章第七段中“Jenny lowered her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table. (珍妮低下头,让长发遮住脸,然后转身离开了那张桌子。)”可知,Jenny低下头,长长的头发遮住了她的脸,她转身离开了桌子。这说明珍妮感到很“尴尬”,本空用形容词ashamed/embarrassed/awkward“尴尬地”,作表语。故填⑧ashamed/embarrassed/awkward。
根据文章第七段中“Jenny lowered her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table. (珍妮低下头,让长发遮住脸,然后转身离开了那张桌子。)”、文章第八段“Jenny’s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher (不久之后,珍妮的母亲在厨房里找到了她,她正在往洗碗机里放盘子。)”
根据文章最后一段“Go to take them some fortune cookies and say hello! (去给他们拿些幸运饼干,打个招呼!)”可知,珍妮的妈妈让她向那对双胞胎“展示友好”,本空用名词kindness或friendliness“友好”,作show的宾语。故填⑩kindness或friendliness。
【47题详解】
考查推理判断。根据文章第四段““Nothing,” Jenny mumbled (咕哝). The girl had been angry about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints. (“没什么,”珍妮咕哝着。这个女孩对搬家一直很生气,但她的父母已经做出了决定,现在正忙着为大开张做准备,没时间听她的抱怨)”和第五段中“The first few days at her new school hadn’t been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn’t know, and it seemed like the students hadn’t even noticed her. (在新学校的头几天也并不容易。她觉得很难和不认识的人交谈,而且好像学生们根本就没有注意到她。)”可知,开幕之前,导致珍妮的负面情绪的原因是:珍妮对搬家这一举动很生气,在新学校的头几天并不容易。故答案为:Jenny had been angry about the move, and the first few days at her new school hadn’t been easy.。
根据文章第七段中“As she filled their glasses, Jenny realized the twins were in her class. Jenny lowered her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table. (当她给她们倒水时,珍妮发现这对双胞胎是她的同班同学。珍妮低下头,让长发遮住脸,然后转身离开了那张桌子。)”、文章第八段“Jenny’s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher (不久之后,珍妮的母亲在厨房里找到了她,她正在往洗碗机里放盘子。)” Because she saw her classmates come to her restaurant with their parents and didn’t want to be recognized.。
The girls would recognize Jenny and chat with her, enjoying the cookies. The three would become friends and take part in the school party together.。

D. Ithaca cannot bring any profit to its development company.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Shortcut to Ancient Inscriptions
B. Who Will Be the Historians' Right-Hand Man?
C. The Mysterious Contents of Ancient Languages
D. AI Used to Fill in Missing Words in Ancient Writings

A. B.
C. D.

A. It all depends on your character.
B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.
C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.
D. Thus these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.
E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.
F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.
G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.
