This is actually a very common experience that many people share. Even when surrounded by friends and family, we can still feel completely alone if we don’t feel truly connected to them. Before offering advice, I’d suggest you think carefully about what you really want from social communications. Are you looking for someone to accompany you, to support you, or to help you make new friends? Understanding your needs will help you find the right solutions. Here are some practical suggestions that might help: * Make an effort to spend quality time with friends and family. Make regular meetups, phone calls, or even short hellos. These small but strong connections can make a big difference in how connected you feel. * Consider joining groups or activities where you can meet people with similar interests. This could be a sports team, book club, volunteer organization, or hobby group. Shared interests provide natural conversation starters and connection points. * Be patient with yourself. Building true relationships takes time, and it’s okay to feel lonely sometimes during the process. Each small step you take brings you closer to better relationships. I hope these suggestions are helpful. Remember that many people experience what you’re feeling, and with time and effort, you can develop the meaningful connections you’re looking for. Best wishes, Jordan 1. What does the letter say about feeling lonely in crowds? A. It can never be changed. B. It’s a normal experience. C. It helps people know better. D. Deo Kato Runs From South Africa to England On December 22, Deo Kato became the only person to run from Cape Town, South Africa to London, England. The 8,000-mile trip finally lasted 518 days. Kato wanted to call attention to the struggles of newcomers, and the difficulties they often faced. The run was long and hard. He ran through dangerous places where wars were being fought. At times he got sick. He also faced trouble, especially in Europe. But Kato also had many good experiences. In some places children ran along with him for miles. Lots of supporters showed up to greet him when he finally arrived in London. Kato says his run showed him that migration (移民) can help connect people and improve everyone’s lives. He believes that one day the world will be better for the newcomers. Hilde Dosogne Runs a Marathon Every Day for a Year Last year, Hilde Dosogne, a 55-year-old scientist, ran a marathon every day, all year long. After finishing these 366 marathons, Dosogne raised over $75,000 for breast cancer research. In the past year, Dosogne went to work early, to make sure she had time for a four-hour marathon every afternoon. She ran in all kinds of weather. Once, she fell two-thirds of the way through a marathon and hurt her finger. When she got out of the hospital that day, she ran a whole new marathon, rather than completing the one she had started. Dosogne says the running was hard on her body, but that remaining determined to keep going was even harder. “I’m glad it’s over,” she said at the end of the final race. But that doesn’t mean she’s giving up running. In September, she’s planning on running a 153-mile race in Greece. 4. What made Deo Kato draw public attention to the newcomers? A. A new marathon. B. A long running trip. C. A war experience. D. A medical research. 5. How does Deo Kato feel about the newcomers’ future life? A. Curious. B. Worried. C. Uncertain. D. Hopeful. 6. The work helps scientists learn more about how bees collect food and how far they travel. Researchers used simple codes called “AprilTags”, which are similar to QR codes (二维码). These codes are easy for cameras to track and work out, even when the lighting isn’t good. Over the spring and summer, the scientists marked over 32,000 young bees spread across six different hives (蜂巢). By placing a solar-powered camera and a tiny computer above the entrance to a hive, the researchers could track the movements of the each marked bee. The new system (系统) gave the researchers a lot of information about the bees’ movements. They found that most trips outside the hive took 1 to 4 minutes. The scientists think these short trips were used for quick jobs like checking the weather. Most trips, even longer ones, were shorter than 20 minutes. But about 34% of the bees took trips that lasted longer than two hours. The scientists say this could show that the bees were making longer trips to collect food. The researchers noticed that the bees spent more time out collecting when there were fewer flowers around. The scientists were surprised by how long the bees lived. Before the study, scientists thought honey bees lived for about 28 days. But the marked bees didn’t start collecting food until they were around two weeks old. And the researchers discovered that the bees continued to collect food for six weeks after that. Scientists know that bees use a special “waggle dance” to communicate with each other about where to collect food. Now the researchers want to see how their new tracking information matches up with these special movements. They plan to teach beekeepers and other scientists how to use their tracking system. 8. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us? A The reason for studying honey bees. B. The way to track honey bees. C. The living habits of honey bees. D. The place of collecting food. 9. What can we infer about bees when there are fewer flowers around? A. They need longer sleep. B. They may be dead soon. C. They work harder to find food. D. They fight with other insects. 10. Why were the scientists surprised at the findings in Paragraph 4? A. Because bees stopped collecting food after 28 days. B. Because most of the bees took trips for 2 hours. C. Because bees lived longer than they had thought. D. Because bees flew far away to check the weather. 11. What will researches do next in the last paragraph? A. Put off the research on bees. B. Study the dance of other insects. C. Teach other scientists the system. D. Change ways of tracking bees. D When you think of a robot, you might picture something with a lot of sensors (传感器), and hard metal arms controlled by a computer. But scientists at the AMOLF institute in the Netherlands have come up with a robot that has no brain and no sensors. And yet this robot can “walk” by itself. And if it’s dropped into water, it swims. How is this possible? The team behind the robot says the secret is in the science of how air moves. If you have ever seen a “tube (管道) dancer” swinging, then you’ve seen the science that makes this robot work. Tube dancers are tall thin tubes of cloth that air is pumped (用泵抽送) through. High pressure from the pumped air fills the tube, making it stand up. As the air runs through faster, the pressure drops. This drop in pressure forms a “kink (扭结)” in the tube, causing part of it to fall. The kink makes the pumped air move more slowly, raising the pressure again. The pumped air pushes the kink up until the dancer stands up once more. Air pressure moving a kink along a tube is exactly what drives the robot. There are several remarkable things about the robot. One is its speed. The robot can cover a distance about thirty times of its body lengths in a second. The robot also can adjust by itself to different conditions. If it walks into a wall, it turns at once. Perhaps most surprising is the fact that if the robot is dropped into water, it begins moving in a new way that allows it to swim. So far, almost all of the robot’s skills are things that it just does itself. The researchers say that in the future they hope to develop new ways to control the robot and perhaps give it more skills. 12. Why is the robot by AMOLF scientists special? A. It works with strong metal arms. B. It can swim without a brain. C. It is controlled by humans. D. It is usually used underwater. 13. What are Paragraph 2&3 mainly about? A. How the robot works. B. What the robot looks like. C. Where the robot is made. D. When the robot stands up. 14. What does the underlined word “adjust” probably mean in Paragraph 4? A. Change B. Improve C. Challenge D. Serve 15. Which is the best title for this passage? A. The Future of Robot Technology B. The Research on Making a Robot C. The Robot That Works in the Water D. Air-powered Robot That Walks and Swims 第二节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下面材料,从方框中所给的A-E五个选项中选出正确的选项(其中一项是多余选项),并回答第5小题。 Empathy (共情) is the ability to understand things from another person’s point of view. Scientists at Penn State University used an unusual method to track (追踪) honey bees. A. The reason for studying honey bees. 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. It’s a great idea because exercising with friends can bring me more fun and make me feel less bored. Also, we can encourage each other when we feel tired or lazy. This way, we not only improve our health but also make our friendship stronger. Starting from next month, I will exercise with my best friend, Li Hua, three times a week after school. We will choose different activities, like playing badminton on Monday, running in the park on Wednesday, and swimming on weekends. We’ll also take photos to see our changes and cheer for each other every time. I believe if we keeping moving together, we will stay healthy and happy! Possible version(二): To keep fit, I prefer to choose exercise with partners. The reasons are as follows. Firstly, having someone to exercise with can help improve our friendship. We chat and laugh during the exercise, which will make us grow closer to each other. What’s more, when I feel tired and want to stop, my partner will give me a cheer-up. And we can encourage each other all the way. As for my future plan, I’ve made up my mind to keep really fit. I will eat more vegetables and fruit. Of course, exercise is also very necessary. In a word, no matter which way we choose, the key is to keep moving and stick to it.
