Ten years ago, during the 15th Provincial Games of Zhejiang, a 10-year-old swimmer named Pan Zhanle made a surprising statement during an interview about his future goals: “Being faster than Sun Yang is enough.” At first, it considered as child’s joke, the young boy who dared to dream big. However, he proved himself in Chinese swimming history with his record-breaking performances at the Paris Olympics. On August 1st, he set a new world record of 1.2 seconds in the 100m freestyle final. Just four days later, he broke his own record with a 3.92s final leg in the men's 4x100m medley relay (混合接力赛).
From Wenzhou in Zhejiang, Pan was introduced to swimming by his parents from a young age. He was chosen by the Wenzhou Sports School at the age of seven. Wang Shi, acting as Pan’s coach at the school, recalled, “Back then, Pan was small in shape, not much of a talker, but spare no effort to train.”
“The more people doubt my abilities, the more determined (坚定的) I am to prove them wrong,” he said. Other children would slack off when they began to get tired while he could keep it up.

It was a boiling summer day in July. The sun shone brightly and the air felt heavy with heat. When I was advised to stay at home to avoid getting sunburned, my father came in from working outside, wiping sweat off his face. He said to me with a smile, “Look outside, Jesse! It’s hot enough to fry (煎) an egg on the road!”
After hearing what my father said, I looked at the sunlit road through the door, feeling doubtful. Could it really be that hot? I decided to test this idea myself. I took an egg from our fridge and went out right away. Then I broke it and poured it out on the side of the road. I waited, hoping to see it cook. But nothing happened. The egg stayed as it was—no white edge formed, and there was no smell of cooking. I felt upset and went back inside, wondering why it didn’t work. I turned to my father for help. He thought for a while and said, “It wasn’t hot enough.”
I wanted to know how to solve the problem, so I asked my elder brother who is good at science for help. “Why not use a magnifying glass (放大镜) to shine on the egg?” He got a magnifying glass and explained that it could gather sunlight into one point, raising the temperature. “So we could fry the egg on the road in this way”, my brother said. I agreed with him.
This time, I placed the egg on a darker part of the road. Eric showed me how to hold the magnifying glass so that a small, bright light spot fell on the egg. At first, nothing changed. Then, slowly, the edges of the egg turned white and firm. After a few minutes, the egg was just fried! I was so excited to see it work.
I felt happy because I got new knowledge through practice. Later, I understood, “What others say is not always right. It only takes practice to find out whether it’s true or not.”

While traveling in Tongcheng, Anhui Province, tourists must visit a famous place—Liuchi Alley. There is an interesting story behind the alley.
Zhang Ying was a minister in the Qing Dynasty. He lived in Jingshi. One day, he received a letter from his family in his hometown of Tongcheng. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family was arguing with the neighbor Wu about the house boundary (边界). Zhang’s family wrote the letter hoping that Zhang could force the neighbor to make a concession.
However, Zhang wrote a poem back saying, “A letter was sent over miles just for a wall, but giving up some would do no harm. The Great Wall still stands today, but the first emperor of Qin is nowhere to be seen.”
After reading the letter, Zhang’s family understood that the close relationship with the neighbors was more important than the wall’s boundary. So they decided to move their wall about one meter back for the neighbor. The Wu was deeply touched by this and they moved their wall one meter back, too. Many people are trying to learn a new language. Some of them consider it as a hobby, while others have to learn a language because it is required by their jobs or study. As a foreigner who is really interested in Chinese culture, I like learning Chinese.
It is thought that a person needs to know at least 3000 Chinese characters to understand most Chinese newspapers. The problem for most foreigners, however, is that knowing 3000 characters sounds like an impossible task, for many of the Chinese characters look the same. That’s why some people give up halfway. It’s the most difficult part for me, too. Whenever I saw a character I didn’t know in the street or on a menu, I would just write it down on my phone and then look it up. Slowly I’ve learned the characters that are common in daily life.
It’s also important to listen to Chinese as much as possible. I downloaded a lot of listening materials from the Internet on my phone and listened to them on the way to school, work and even dating with my friends. I also watched a lot of Chinese TV shows and films, where the words are not so difficult and there are always subtitles (字幕). In this way, I’ve also learned how to express myself like a native.
Learning a language is never easy. Basically, I just use every tool on hand and take my learning step by step, and I’m still learning new things to this day!
1. Why does the writer learn Chinese?
A. Because he hopes to move to Beijing, China.
B. Because he has found a job in a big city in China.

Near my home lies a small lake surrounded by a walking path (小路). When my children were younger, I took them to this place a few times a week. The experience of walking along the path was truly wonderful, as it allowed us to be close to nature and enjoy its beauty.
One autumn day, however, I noticed that the path wasn’t looking so good. It was full of rubbish that other walkers had left along the way. The next time we went there, I took a large bag with me. As we walked along the lake, we picked the rubbish up and put it in the bag.
Before putting the bag into the car, I looked back at the lake shining in the sun and the trees full of beautiful red and golden leaves, and I smiled. It took us twice as long as usual to get all the way around the lake. But we felt a sense of satisfaction that couldn’t be put into words. We didn’t make the lake more beautiful, but we removed some things that made it less so.
In this life we are all more important than we realize. Every single thing we do can add or take away from the beauty of this world. We all need to make wise choices to contribute to the world. I’m afraid of heights, but my dad loves tall buildings. He often travels and takes us with him. In the last two years, we visited Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Dad said tall buildings were like modern castles (城堡), and I wanted to understand his love for them.
One time in Shanghai, we had lunch at the top of the Shanghai World Financial (金融) Center. There was a revolving (旋转的) restaurant called “Skyline”. The idea of eating in a moving restaurant made me nervous but excited. We took a fast lift to the top. As the lift went up, my heart raced. I felt very scared but I didn’t want to show it.
“Are you OK?” Dad asked.
“Sure, I’ll be fine,” I replied, trying to sound brave.
As the lift moved, the city below got smaller. It was like a huge map being opened up. I closed my eyes, but curiosity got the better of me. I looked up at the wide blue sky. It was amazing.
When the lift stopped, we sat by a window in the restaurant. The view was amazing, too. The buildings turned slowly, and the view of the city changed little by little. I started to relax and even enjoyed the movement. The sun shone brightly and covered the city with a golden light.

It was a busy morning. At around 8:30, an elderly man came to the hospital. I heard him saying to the nurse that he was in a hurry for an appointment (约会) at 9:30. The nurse let him sit in the waiting area, telling him it would be at least 2 minutes before the doctor would be able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch again and again. Then I decided to examine his wound first, since one of my patients didn’t appear at the appointed time.
While taking care of his wound, he told me that he needed to go to the nursing home to have breakfast with his wife. I then asked about his wife’s health condition. He told me that she had been ill for some time and she had a special disease. I asked if she would be angry if he was a bit late. He replied that she didn’t know who he was—she had not been able to recognize him for five years. I was surprised and asked him,“And you still go there every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?”
With a big smile, he said, “She doesn’t know me, but I know who she is.” I had to hold back my tears as he left.
Now I realize that true love is accepting everything. The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything they have. Life isn’t about how to live through the storm, but about how to dance in the rain.

However, she thought the most difficult hike was climbing Mount Taishan. It was not for its height, but for the largest tourist rush she met. “We could only move up one step every five minutes or so,” she said.

Becky Schroeder was only 10 years old when she came up with the idea of the glow-paper. The idea came to her when she tried to do her homework in the family car. It was getting dark, and she could not look through her notebook anymore. She imagined how nice it would be to have a kind of paper that glowed in the dark and allowed her to write even if there wasn’t light.
Becky decided to invent a product that would do just that. She started researching how toys that glowed in the dark worked and found out they all used special paint. The paint keeps energy when a light shines on it and then gives off light in the dark.
Becky bought some special paint. In the darkest room, she spent the evening doing experiments with the paint and thousands of pieces of paper, one at a time, until she got it right.
Her invention is made of a board covered with special paint. Once a piece of paper is placed on it, it glows and people can see their writing or read in the dark.

Abby Jaramillo, along with another teacher, started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four schools where students don’t have much money. Abby saw that the kids in these schools couldn’t get fresh food and green spaces. Fast food places were everywhere. The students often came to school with bags of snacks and big bottles of soft drinks. They thought vegetables tasted terrible. Digging in the soil (土壤) and picking leaves might seem like hard jobs for them. Abby wanted to change this. She started the Urban Sprouts program.
In the Urban Sprouts classes at two middle schools and two high schools, students do all kinds of hands-on things. They test the soil to see what it’s made of. They cut open flowers and seeds (种子) to learn about them. They taste fresh or dried fruits and vegetables. And of course, they work in the garden. A few times a year, they even cook the vegetables they grow. Sometimes, they make salads for everyone in their schools.
A study of the program showed that it’s really working. Students are eating more vegetables now. Some students said they went home and talked to their parents, and their families are eating differently because of it.
Abby says the program has advantages that go beyond just eating better. Some students like gardening so much that they take seeds home to start their own little vegetable gardens. In addition, for Abby’s special education students, who often have trouble controlling their emotions (情绪), working in the garden helps them calm down. “They get outside, and they feel successful,” she says.

The morning sun turned Harbin’s snow into gold as I put on my blue volunteer jacket. At 20, I became an “ice guide” for the 2025 Asian Winter Games, ready to show my hometown’s magic to the world.
It began when a South Korean speed skater asked, “Where are Harbin’s famous ice lights?” I led him through busy streets to Zhaolin Park. Ice dragons shone under colorful lights. “Like a fairy story!” he cried, taking photos.
Then came the snowstorm. Thick snow covered ski slopes (斜坡), and our team shoveled (铲) all night. Suddenly, Coach Ali from Iran shouted, “Let’s work together!” His team joined us. We laughed as we dug, gloves icy but hearts warm. By the early morning, the slope shone like silver. “Teamwork beats snow!” Ali high-fived me.
My favorite moment was at the ice stadium. Thai athletes pointed at red fu decorations. “Can we write it?” Lena asked. I handed her a brush. “Write from your heart!” I encouraged. Then, she stuck it on her sled (雪橇). “Now I race with China’s luck!”
On the final night, fireworks lit the city. Maria, a Mongolian volunteer, held my hand. “Your ‘Ice City’ has the warmest people.”
Harbin’s winter froze rivers, but our smiles made us closer. China’s spirit wasn’t in big events—it lived in shared laughter, helping hands, and the joy of saying, “Welcome to my home!”

On January 28, 2025, a special performance called YangBOT (《秧BOT》) amazed audiences at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, China’s most-watched TV show.
Directed by a famous filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the show mixed traditional Chinese yangko dance with modern robot technology.
In the performance humanoid robots (robots shaped like humans) dressed in colorful costumes danced yangko, a joyful folk dance from northern China often seen during festivals. They spun handkerchiefs (手绢) at once and formed creative group patterns. These robots were developed by Unitree (a Chinese robotics company). This was not Unitree’s first success.

C. It’s interesting to write Chinese characters.

Millions of hearts were moved when Luna shared on her social media this truly special bond (纽带) between her son Otto and the wild bird.
It all started last year in August when the woman shared on her social media that she had brought home a baby crow (乌鸦). With his parents nowhere to be seen, the family decided to keep the little bird and named him Russell.
Since then, the family have taken good care of Russell and Russell has also become Otto’s friend. “Russell is a wild bird. He’s not around all the time, but when Otto is outside, he’ll never leave Otto’s side,” says Luna. “They have a special bond,” she adds. In all of the shared videos, we can see how two-year-old Otto is patiently followed by Russell no matter where the little kid goes or what he does.
It’s important to mention here that crows are considered very social; they have great memories and can use tools. Some scientists compare the intelligence (智力) of the crow even to a seven-year-old child’s. So it’s not so surprising that Russell is so happy in Otto’s company and is so close to this loving family. One time in Shanghai, we had lunch at the top of the Shanghai World Financial (金融) Center. There was a revolving (旋转的) restaurant called “Skyline”.

Hao Yongquan, 1, was chosen as Gansu's most beautiful forest ranger (护林员) in its 6th selection. Hao Yongquan and his workmates at Guanyin Forest Farm are called the “forests eyes” and “green guardians”.
“Daily work usually starts with patrolling (巡逻).
