“Guess what, Ethan!” his mother said, a week after moving into their new house. “One of my old friends lives nearby and her son Leo is your classmate. Is he your friend?”
Ethan shook his head. “That boy isn’t good at games or anything. He keeps reading old books all the time.”
Ethan was the captain of the school baseball team and was also good at many other sports.
“Well, maybe he is more interested in other things than sports,” said his mother. “You might also pick up a new interest from him. We’ve invited his family to tea this evening.”
That evening, the two boys didn’t talk a lot. Ethan knew Leo wasn’t good at sports, and he didn’t try to find out Leo’s interests. So, both felt quite relieved when Leo left.
Though their mothers visited each other often, Ethan and Leo never did. They just had nothing in common.
One day, while playing football, Ethan broke his leg and had to stay at home for six weeks. Lying in bed, he felt very lonely and upset, especially with the inter-school baseball match around the corner. At first, his friends visited often. But as the match drew near, they became too busy with practice to come.
One evening, Leo unexpectedly visited. Shyly, he handed Ethan a book. “You must be bored. This might help.”
Ethan picked it up without much interest, but the cover caught his eye—a yellow and golden lion called Simba. Inside were shiny photos of Simba and his friends.
“It’s a good book,” Leo said, “I think you’ll like it.” He then got up to go.
“Don’t go so soon,” said Ethan. “Tell me about the book.”
Leo sat down again and shared the story of Simba. Ethan was so fascinated that he asked for more books about animals.
Leo began visiting every evening, and Ethan grew to enjoy his company. He gradually learned about Leo’s deep love for zoology, his weekly zoo trips, and his collection of pets at home.
Six weeks later, Ethan returned to school. That evening, he visited Leo, who was feeding his pets.
“I’m going to the zoo on Sunday, Ethan,” Leo said, “Would you like to come along? Maybe we can watch the lion cubs play with their mom.”
“That would be great,” said Ethan, his eyes sparkling at the thought.

Since I started training in artistic swimming, I have had the best time of my life. My dance experience has helped me pick up the skills and grace (优雅) necessary for the sport. I am also lucky to be in a wonderful club, Crystal Aquatics, and I am forever thankful to my coach, Crystal, for believing in me and sending me to my first competition.
The competition served as a great learning experience for me, and the memory remains clear today. I had practiced hard for the competition, and I was excited and nervous on that day. My family and my friend Emily were with me to give me encouragement. My coach helped me with my warm-up and gave me support as well. I was really touched by their love. When it was my turn, I was in high spirits and took my position.
I waited for the music. However, the music did not come. I was counting in my head, dived into the water and began my performance, until I was stopped by my coach. I then realized that I had started too early. It was a false start. I felt very embarrassed (尴尬的). However, at that point, I also felt a rush to prove that I could still do it.
For a second time, I dived into the water and gave 200 percent effort. When I was done, my coach, family, and friend said “Good job.” Although they were encouraging and tried to comfort me, I still felt that I had let everyone down.
Later that day, my coach messaged me that she was proud of me and that, even with the false start, I had done well and completed my routine (动作) beautifully, She also shared a photo of me during my performance. It showed my excitement and happiness while I was dancing in the water.
This experience reminded me that life isn’t about victory all the time. What truly matters is finding joy in doing what you love and having the courage to get back up after failing. If we don’t give up, every failure can make us stronger to keep going.
24.What went wrong when the writer first tried to perform?
A.She started too early. B.She forgot her routine.
C.The coach gave her wrong advice. D.There was a problem with the music.

26.What did the writer learn from the experience?
A.Hard work will always pay off. B.Winning is as important as enjoyment.
C.Success comes with other people’s support. D.Rising from failure matters more than victory.

In a little town, there was a clock tower that had stood for centuries. The clock tower was known for its perfect timekeeping, and was looked after by Mr. Pendulum, the town’s timekeeper.
One day, Mr. Pendulum decided to take on an apprentice (学徒). He chose a young boy named Oliver, who had always been attracted by the clock tower. Oliver was excited but also nervous, knowing that keeping time was a responsibility of great importance. Mr. Pendulum taught Oliver everything he knew about the clock.
As Oliver worked alongside Mr. Pendulum, he learned that time was not just about numbers and minutes—it was about moments and memories. The clock tower had a special characteristic: It could show little bits of the past and future. Mr. Pendulum showed Oliver how to use this characteristic to help people in need.
One day, a young woman named Emily came to the clock tower for help. She was feeling lost and uncertain of her future. Mr. Pendulum and Oliver let her see a piece of her past, where she had faced challenges but had also experienced moments of joy and growth. They then showed her a possible future, where she could achieve her dreams and find happiness.
Emily was moved by the experience and left the clock tower with renewed hope. Oliver realized that the true power of the clock tower was not in keeping time, but in helping people find their way. He also learned that time was not something to be controlled, but something to be treasured.
Years later, Oliver became a smart timekeeper, using the clock tower’s magic to guide people through difficult times. He taught others that time was a gift, and that every moment was a chance to create a better future.
As years passed, Oliver grew old and passed on his knowledge to new apprentices, making sure that his spirit remained young. I was standing in front of the dressing-room mirror, looking unhappy. I wore a white dancing dress and a white swim cap that covered most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes in my dance school’s Winter Wonderland Show.
“Grandma, I really don’t feel like being in the show,” I said. Grandma Lani looked up from what she was doing. “Why, Avery? You love to dance.” I used to love to dance. But Ms. Tuttle gave the part of the Snow Queen to Lisa. She got to do a dance onstage all by herself. The snowflakes just had to run and spin (旋转) to look like a snowstorm. “I don’t like our dance. And no one would notice if I wasn’t there. There are so many of us.” I sighed (叹气).
Grandma was about to speak. Then something outside the window caught her eye. She got my coat and pulled me out of the dressing room and through the doors to the outside. It was snowing. Grandma held her breath, and I suddenly thought of something. “Grandma, have you ever seen snow before?” “No. In Hawaii, it snows only on the very tops of mountains.”
I had seen snow lots of times, but now I tried to see it differently. Like it was new. So many snowflakes came together to create something magical. “Aloha,” my grandma said softly to the sky. Aloha can mean many things, including “love”, “hello”, and “good-bye”. She continued to say, “I don’t know when I’ll see something like that again.” “I do,” I said. I took Grandma Lani’s hand and pulled her back inside.
When the stage lights came up and the music started, I ran and spun with all of the other snowflakes. I didn’t care if Grandma Lani could see me. I was helping her see a snowstorm.
24.What was the part Avery played in the dance?
A.A snowflake. B.A snowman. C.The Snow Queen. D.A granddaughter.
25.What did Avery do after seeing the snow with her grandma?
A.She danced happily in the snow.
B.She felt the snowflakes in her hands.
C.She pulled her grandma into the room.
D.She explained “Aloha” to her grandma.
26.Why did Avery feel like being in the show at last?
A.She loved to dance very much. B.She became more important in it.
C.She would like to show her gift. D.She wanted to please her grandma.

berry bush
One sunny morning during my childhood, our class were going for a berry-picking trip to a nearby field. Excitement filled the air as we held our baskets and lined up at the school gate. All my classmates talked and laughed happily.
At the berry field, things went exactly as Father predicted. Whenever someone shouted, “Look at this huge bush!” classmates would give up their area, rushing over only to find a larger bush. I remembered what happened yesterday evening. Placing a hand on my shoulder, my father said kindly, “Harry, remember this—when you find a good bush, don’t give it up easily. Stay with it until you’ve picked all the berries. Don’t keep searching for a better one that might not exist. Others might run around picking berries here and there. If you do the same, you’ll return with an empty basket. Real success comes from staying with your bush.”
There is no doubt that my classmates were busy and repeated searching all day, moving from bush to bush but collecting little. Meanwhile, I focused on one bush at a time, filling my basket slowly and surely. By sunset, my basket overflowed—three times more than others. While my classmates complained about painful legs and empty baskets, I walked home proudly, understanding Father’s wisdom.
This lesson became very important to me after my father passed away. When my workmates said, “Let’s give up this hard project!” I still kept going. When my friends told me, “Change your job to get more money!” I chose to improve my skills in my present job. As time went by, my boss noticed that I worked very hard. Five years later, I became the youngest team leader in the company.
What’s the secret? We should master one thing well before we move on to the next. Today, a lot of people want to get quick success, but real success comes from being patient and sticking to something. Whether we are studying, working, or making friends, if we stick to our path, we can create long-lasting value.
24.Where did Harry’s class go on that sunny morning?
A.To a forest. B.To a berry field. C.To the school gate. D.To the company.
25.What did Harry do when he found a good bush?
A.He called friends to see it together. B.He followed others to collect berries.
C.He took a few berries and left quickly. D.He stayed there until he finished picking.
26.Why did Harry succeed later in life?
A.He tried to get quick success. B.He worked hard to get money.
C.He kept sticking to something. D.He continued studying and working.

In 2019, I began my Chinese language journey at the Confucius Institute in Rome. I wanted a new challenge—something truly different that would expand my worldview. From the very first lesson, I found it both exciting and challenging. The characters, the tones, and the unique sentence structures deeply attracted me.
However, my interest soon branched out far beyond linguistics (语言学). As I explored further, I discovered that learning the language was just the gateway to a huge cultural heritage (遗产) going back thousands of years. Eager to understand the literary heart of China, I began with Tang Dynasty poetry. Poems by Li Bai and Du Fu introduced me to China’s poetic tradition. Then I explored earlier works like the Shi Jing and Chu Ci, further broadening my understanding of regional literary expressions (地域文学表达). I also took courses on Chinese history, literature and art history. In each new topic, I discovered various viewpoints on life, art and morality (道德).
All these discoveries inspired me to share what I have learned. I wanted to introduce Chinese traditions, stories and innovations (创新) to people back home. I decided to create a magazine, focusing on Chinese culture and traditions, such as history, mythology (神话), literature and art, along with special columns on tea culture and regional foods.
Starting this publishing adventure has also been exciting and challenging. From selecting articles and editing translations to working with experts who can provide unique insights, I felt like I was constantly learning. And that made me fascinated (着迷的) about China.
More importantly, I hope I can contribute to a mutual (相互的) understanding between cultures. If my journey from a curious language student in Rome to a cultural ambassador (大使) helps encourage others to explore, then I will find my personal “China moment”.
24.The writer began learning Chinese because ________.
A.it was easier than European languages
B.he would have a long journey in China
C.it was a language offered at the Confucius Institute
D.he wanted a new challenge to expand his worldview
25.How did the writer feel about his discoveries?
A.Confused. B.Inspired. C.Curious. D.Uncertain.
26.By creating the magazine, the writer hopes to ________.
A.become a Chinese writer B.improve culture understanding
C.make a journey to China D.be a language student in Rome

In our writing club, we often shared our stories with a critique partner to give helpful feedback (反馈) so we could tell the best story.
Today my critique partner was Penny. As I handed my story to her, I was nervous. I had no problem coming up with great story ideas. I did have problems with spelling and grammar. Penny didn’t look at me or smile as she pushed her story across the table toward me. Why was she worried? She always got perfect scores on her spelling and grammar tests.
I read her story without stopping. It was perfect! I loved it. “Wow, great story,” I told her. “I don’t have any suggestions.”
“Yours too,” she mumbled (嘟哝). She didn’t even look at me as she passed mine back.
After class, Penny hurried out of the library. I noticed a book under her table. It must have fallen out of Penny’s bag. I read the description on the back and found it was just like Penny’s story! I couldn’t believe Penny had copied this idea! It wasn’t fair!
Outside of the school, I spotted (发现) Penny sitting on a bench. I walked over and handed the book to her. She hung her head, almost crying! All of a sudden, I wasn’t angry anymore. I remembered that my job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback, not to make her feel bad. But what should I say?
I kept thinking about Penny as I walked home. I decided to ask Mom for help. When I found her in the kitchen making dinner with Dad, I realized that Mom and Dad had different skills, making them a great creative team. That gave me an idea to suggest to Penny.
At school the next morning, I found Penny at her locker.
“I thought I would love writing club, but I never have a single idea for a story,” she said.
“Well, I have ideas, but I wish I could write perfectly like you do,” I said.
“What if we worked on a story together? I bet we could come up with something great.”
A big smile was on Penny’s face.
24.How did Penny feel when she pushed her story to the writer?
A.Bored. B.Disappointed. C.Confused. D.Worried.
25.What did the writer find about Penny’s story after class?
A.It was a perfect story. B.Its idea was copied from a book.
C.It was full of spelling mistakes. D.Its idea was about a creative team.
26.What might the writer learn from the experience?
A.Offering helpful feedback really matters. B.Perfect grammar is important to a good story.

It was a sunny spring morning. The air was fresh and the sky was blue with a few white clouds. This day was special because I finally learned to ride a bike on my own.
For years, I watched my friends ride their bikes with envy (羡慕). Every time they sped by, laughing and enjoying the wind in their hair, I felt jealous. My efforts always ended in tears as I couldn’t keep my balance.
That Saturday, my father decided to teach me to ride. He took me to a quiet park, away from busy streets and traffic. The grass was green and flowers were blooming, adding color to the peaceful setting.
My father held the back of my bike seat tightly as I pedaled (踩踏板) slowly. At first, I was nervous and tense, expecting to fall any moment. But as I gained confidence, I relaxed and enjoyed the feeling of moving by myself.
After a few rounds, my father gradually let go of the bike without my noticing. I kept pedaling until I turned around and saw him standing a few feet away, smiling proudly. That’s when I realized I was riding alone.
The excitement was indescribable. I felt a strong sense of independence and success. I rode faster and farther, exploring the park with a freedom I’d never felt before.
As the day went on, I practiced turning, stopping, and even some tricks. My father watched from the sidelines, offering encouragement and advice. By the time we went home, I was a confident bike rider.
That evening, I realized learning to ride wasn’t just a new skill. It was a symbol of growth and strong will. It taught me that with patience, sticking power, and help from those who care, we can overcome any challenge.

Lena Carter never thought she’d become a world-famous chef, let alone an encouraging speaker. She looked like a gentle artist rather than someone who once burned her way through countless failed experiments.
Lena grew up in a small town where her family ran a fishing business. Her parents always encouraged her creativity. However, the kitchen was her true playground. Unfortunately, her first tries at cooking were failures. Meals were often either overcooked or underseasoned. Her family ate her dishes with smiles, but she saw the truth in their eyes. It hurt, but it also made her want to improve.
One evening, she made a dish so bad even her dog wouldn’t touch it. But instead of giving up, Lena found herself laughing. For the first time, she understood that failure was a natural part of learning. It was her turning point. From that day, she promised herself never to be afraid of mistakes again and to keep moving forward.

Sometimes the fire gets too hot, but if you keep your passion (激情) burning, you’ll create something amazing.”

Forgiveness waits patiently in the first days of the New Year.
It was a cold winter night when my father asked me to come and sit by his side. In some way, I was able to sense his sadness.
My father had always been emotionless and at times cold. Being a successful businessman and a well-respected leader never earned him a “Cool Dad” title. He missed out on too many important moments in my life because of so many business trips. I never had much connection with him growing up. We didn’t spend much time together.
As I was thinking about childhood memories, he said, “Jane, I’m here to say sorry to you.” I felt a heavy pounding on my heart and felt troubled at his words. In my mind, he had been wrong for years for those countless absences—from my birth, to my concert performances, parent meetings, and more. He always seemed busy, too busy to notice things, too busy to care.
Then, he let out a soft cry. It was the first time I had ever seen him cry. I was surprised by the unusual emotional connection shared between us and could only lay my hand on his back, not able to say a word. Trying to catch his breath, he said, “I’m sorry that I haven’t been there for you all these years. You have no idea how many times I have wanted to give you a hug and tell you that I’m proud of you. I just want to let you know how much I love you…”
I listened in silence until my eyes became watery, until I couldn’t hold back my tears. I realized that while I was blaming my father for his disappointing absence, he was also reaching out to me for comfort, warmth, and family support after a lifetime of long days of work. I wasn’t there for him, either. At that moment, all my complaints seemed so selfish. I felt ashamed (羞愧的).
“Papa?” I said as he looked at me. “I am sorry, too.”
In the silence that followed, we breathed the same fresh air of forgiveness, together. No more words were needed to understand. We entered the new year, for the first time, as father and daughter.

Helen looked everywhere. “Where’s my poster (海报)?” she said. She had made one about rabbits.
“Here it is!” Her little brother Jack called, holding up the poster. He drew all over it with crayons. “No!” Helen shouted. “Mom, look what Jack did!” Jack started to cry. “I wanted to help.”
“Oh, Helen,” their mother said, “that’s too bad. But you have to hurry or you’ll miss the bus.”
Helen ran out of the house. She frowned (皱眉) all through class. When it was her turn to show her poster, she said, “My brother ruined it. I’m going to tear (撕) up his picture books to get even.” Her teacher, Ms. Smith, frowned at Helen.
During the break, Helen played catch with her friends. She missed the ball again and again. She grew angrier. She threw the ball as hard as she could. It hit a kid on the leg.
Ms. Smith talked to Helen when she got back to the classroom. “You seem upset today, Helen.”
“I am,” Helen said.
“Why?” asked Ms. Smith. “Maybe something doesn’t turn out like we want. We have to be careful when we feel angry. Anger can cause us to say or do hurtful things.”
“Like tearing up my brother’s picture books?” Helen asked softly.
“Exactly. We can practice calming down before we act.” Ms. Smith said.
“How?” Helen asked.
“You like rabbits, right?” Ms. Smith asked. Helen nodded. Ms. Smith continued, “I pretend (假装) I’m a rabbit when I want to calm down. I take three breaths through my nose. Sniff. Sniff. Sniff. Then I let all the air out through my mouth. Haaaa.” Helen and Ms. Smith did it together three times.
“How are you feeling now, Helen?” asked Ms. Smith.
“Better,” Helen said.
Ms. Smith gave her a thumbs-up. “I’m still going to talk to my brother about not touching my things, though,” Helen added.
24.What did Jack do to Helen’s poster?
A.He threw it away. B.He put it up on the wall.
C.He drew something on it. D.He cut it into several pieces.

A.He visited Ethan with animal books. B.He gave some photos of zoos to Ethan.

I was helping her see a snowstorm.

A.He tried to get quick success. B.He worked hard to get money.

C.Confused. D.Worried.

Samuel lived in a small village near a big mountain. He was an ordinary (普通的) man, but he had big dreams and a heart full of hope. Even if life was not easy for him, he always believed hard work could change everything.
Every day, Samuel looked at the mountain. It stood high and strong, making him want to be strong too.
One day, Samuel decided to climb the mountain. The villagers laughed at him. “You can’t do it!” they said. However, Samuel didn’t let their mockery (嘲笑) stop him. With strong determination (决心), he began his journey up the mountain.
The path was tough, with steep slopes (山坡), slippery rocks, and unpredictable weather making the journey rather dangerous. Samuel fell lots of times. His leg hurt and he felt very tired, but he didn’t give up.
On the way, Samuel met other travelers. They helped each other. Soon, they became brothers, cheering each other up and sharing stories of their hard times and successes. Their friendship made them all stronger.

Lena, strong-willed, threw herself into cooking. She borrowed old cooking books from the library, watched cooking shows, and experimented every single day. The kitchen became her lab, and every mistake was a lesson. Finally, she left home to study culinary arts (烹饪艺术) in the city. Her parents worried she’d fail, but Lena took on the challenge. “It’s not about avoiding mistakes. It’s about turning them into something beautiful,” she told them with a confident smile.
Years later, Lena became a famous chef known for her creative dishes. She even opened her own restaurant, which attracted people from all over the world. But her journey didn’t end there. She started speaking and sharing her story of growth. “Cooking,” she said, “is like life.
Sometimes the fire gets too hot, but if you keep your passion (激情) burning, you’ll create something amazing.”
Now, Lena travels the world, cooking, writing books, and encouraging others. Lena’s story teaches everyone that true success is not about never falling but about always rising stronger and wiser.

24.In Jane’s eyes, what was her father like before?
A.Patient. B.Cool. C.Proud. D.Emotionless.
25.Why did Jane’s father cry?
A.Because he felt sorry for his daughter.
B.Because he was disappointed in his daughter.
C.Because he felt a heavy pounding on his heart.
D.Because he was surprised by the unusual connection.
26.What can we learn from the last paragraph?

“Here it is!” Her little brother Jack called, holding up the poster. He drew all over it with crayons. “No!” Helen shouted. “Mom, look what Jack did!” Jack started to cry. “I wanted to help.”
