People have always wanted to fly. The Chinese began flying kites more than 2,000 years ago. They flew them for fun and to check on the weather, but people could not fly in a kite.
Later, the European inventors worked on the problem of flying. In the 1480s, Leonardo da Vinci drew birds in flight. He studied how their wings and tails worked. Then he drew a flying machine that looked like a helicopter (直升机).
In 1783, the Montgolfier brothers of France invented hot air balloons. They put a big bag to a basket. When they filled the bag with hot air, it floated up. The first balloon passengers were animals. Their balloon traveled for a mile and went up 6,000 feet. Later that year, two men flew in the balloon.
Balloons don’t really fly, though. They float. Sir George Cayley was the next to make progress in flight. In the early 1800s, he began making gliders (滑翔机). The wings of his gliders didn’t move, but their shape made it possible to fly. For 50 years, Cayley tried different wing designs and added tails to help control. In 1853, he put one of his servants in a glider. This young man was the first person to fly, but no one knows his name.
Otto Lilienthal took up where Cayley left off. He was the first to design a glider that could hold a person and fly long distances. He made more than 2,500 flights in gliders. He flew by moving his body and legs. His book explaining what he had learned about flight came out in 1891.
Two brothers from Ohio bought a copy of that book. George and Orville Wright designed a plane based on what they learned from it. They added a small motor to a glider and did many tests. Their first successful flight took place in North Carolina in 1903. The Wright brothers invented the airplane, but they couldn’t have done it alone.

Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away in Wuhan at the age of 99 on February 6th, 2025. He was widely regarded as the “father of China’s nuclear submarines”.
Born in March 1926 to a family of doctors in Guangdong, Huang was the third child of his parents. After spending his boyhood in wartime, he went to Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. Upon graduation in 1949, Huang began his lifelong career in the shipbuilding industry. In 1958, Huang was secretly called to Beijing to join the research team tasked with designing (设计) China’s first nuclear-powered submarine. From that point on, for the next 30 years, he hardly ever went home. At that time, China lacked (缺乏) the basic conditions to develop nuclear submarines. Not only did none of the researchers have any knowledge in this field, but other countries were highly protective of such technologies, offering few technical references (技术参考).
So Huang and other researchers started by searching newspapers and magazines for information. After carefully analysing that information and studying two US submarine models, they finally came up with five plans. The team members didn’t have computers or digital calculators, so they used abacuses (算盘) to solve problems. To ensure the results were correct, they were divided into three groups to do the math at the same time and would do the math again if the three values (数值) were different. After years of hard work, China finally built its first nuclear-powered submarine in 1970, becoming the fifth nation to have nuclear submarines.
Huang’s name remained secret until 1987, when a magazine in Shanghai was allowed to publish a report revealing (展示) only his family name. Even in his 90s, Huang visited his office every weekday morning to review materials of his know-how and experience. He also provided advice for young researchers on solving technical problems. In recognition of his great contributions, Huang was given the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honour, in 2019.
33.Why was it difficult for China to develop nuclear submarines at the beginning?
A.There were no shipbuilding industries in China.
B.The researchers had too much knowledge in other fields.
C.Other countries shared their technologies freely.
D.China didn’t have basic conditions and technical references.
34.How did Huang and other researchers get information for designing?
A.By asking foreign experts. B.By buying advanced technology.
C.By checking newspapers and magazines. D.By working on their own without any information.
35.What can we infer from the fact that Huang’s name remained secret until 1987?
A.Huang changed his name at that time. B.Huang was not important in the project.
C.Huang didn’t want his name to be known. D.The project that Huang worked on was top-secret.
36.What can we learn from the story of Huang Xuhua?
A.Where there is a will, there is a way. B.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
C.Practice makes perfect. D.The early bird catches the worm.

Researchers have used very small electronic devices (电子设备) to make jellyfish (水母) stronger and faster. The scientists say they used these electronic jellyfish in the hopes of sending them to study and explore the world’s seas.
A report on the experiment was published in the magazine Science Advances. The study shows jellyfish are unusual living things. They move through seawater by reducing the size of their muscles. For the experiment, the researchers put an electronic device, about 2 centimeters in length, inside a moon jellyfish, a common kind of jellyfish.
The researchers said the device caused jellyfish to move their bodies more often. They swam around three times faster than usual. “Jellyfish are known to produce something from time to time when they are feeling stressed. No such action appeared during the study. Care is taken to the jelly fish,” Dabiri explained. “The jellyfish swam the same when the electronic device was taken away after the experiment,” the researchers said.
“It’s very unusual and modern. It seems to happen only in the future.” said Xu, an engineer at Stanford University. “We could send these jellyfish to different areas of the sea to get signs of climate change or have a close watch on nature.” “One of the first purposes will be going deep,” added Dabiri. “Going deep is important because humans need to understand the deep seas.”
“Generally, we’d put these jellyfish at the surface, have them swim down to increasing depths, and make them back to the surface with data (数据). Before that the electronic devices help us see just how far we can get them to go down into the sea,” Xu said.
“Jellyfish have lived on earth for over 500 million years, and over that time, their bodies have nearly remained unchanged.” said Xu. “So it’s interesting to find out what makes them so special in the sea and how we can learn from them.” Xu added. “We use animals with natural swimming abilities instead of submarines (潜水艇) which might harm the environment.”
37.What happened to a jellyfish during the experiment?

Have you watched the movie Ne Zha 2? It broke box office records in China and people are crazy about its colorful art and exciting story. This success didn’t happen overnight —— it’s part of the long journey of Chinese animation (动画).
1920s~1960s: Early Beginning
Chinese cartoons began in the 1920s. The first short films were simple. In the 1960s, Havoc in Heaven (《大闹天宫》) became a classic. I tells the story of the Monkey King and shows China's special art style.
1970s~1990s: Slow Development

29.What did Leonardo da Vinci do for his flying machine design?

30.When did Sir George Cayley’s servant fly in a glider?
A.In 1783. B.In 1800. C.In 1853. D.In 1891.

A.Teamwork was necessary for their invention.
B.Their success had much to do with earlier inventors.
C.Animal tests played important roles in their invention.
D.Government support made great contributions to their flights.
32.How does the writer organize the information in the passage?

A.It reduced its muscle size and swam faster.
B.It swam around four times faster than usual.
C.It felt stressed and sometimes produced things.
D.It swam more slowly with the electronic device.
38.Which of the following is the correct order of the experiment?
a. Make the jellyfish back with data. b. Put the jellyfish at the surface.
c. Make the jellyfish swim down. d. Put electronic devices on jellyfish.
A.b—d—a—c B.d—b—c—a C.b—c—d—a D.d—a—b—c
39.Scientists used jellyfish in the experiment because jellyfish ________.
A.are special and not bad for environment
B.have already lived on earth for a long time
C.help us protect environment like submarines
D.can move faster and become larger in the sea
40.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Researchers find new ways to protect nature.
B.Jellyfish become faster with electronic devices.
C.Scientists use jellyfish to explore the deep seas.
D.Jellyfish are important in protecting environment.
