Bertie knew there was something in the wind. His mother had been sad in recent days not sick, just strangely sad. The lion had just lain down beside him, his head warm on Bertie’s feet, when Father cleared his throat and began, “You’ll soon be eight, Bertie. A boy needs a proper education. We’ve found the right place for you, a school near Salisbury in England.”
His heart filled with a terrible fear, all Bertie could think of was his white lion. “But the lion,” he cried, “What about the lion?”
“I’m afraid there’s something else I have to tell you,” his father said. Looking across at Bertie’s mother, he took a deep breath. Then he told Bertie he had met a circus owner from France, who was over in Africa looking for lions to buy. He would come to their farm in a few days.
“No! You can’t send him to a circus!” said Bertie. “He’ll be shut up behind bars. I promised him he never would be. And they will come to see him and laugh at him. He’d rather die. Any animal would!” But as he looked across the table at them, he knew their minds were quite made up.
Bertie felt completely betrayed. He waited until he heard his father’s deep breathing next door. With his white lion at his heels, he crept downstairs in his pyjamas, took down his father’s rifle from the rack and stepped out into the night. He ran and ran till his legs could run no more. As the sun came up over the grassland, he climbed to the top of a hill and sat down, his arms round the lion’s neck. The time had come. “Be wild now,” he whispered. “You’ve got to be wild. Don’t ever come home. All my life I’ll think of you, I promise I will.” He buried his head in the lion’s neck. Then, Bertie clambered down off the hill and walked away.
When he looked back, the lion was still sitting there watching him; but then he stood up, yawned, stretched, and sprang down after him. Bertie shouted at him, but he kept coming. He threw sticks. He threw stones. Nothing worked.
There was only one thing left to do. Tears filling his eyes and his mouth, he lifted the rifle to his shoulder and fired over the lion’s head.
4. Bertie’s mother was sad probably because she________.
A. had lied about her good health condition B. had decided to send Bertie to a new school
C. knew selling the lion would upset Bertie D. knew Bertie would hate to go to England
5. The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to________.
A. some audience B. other animals C. Bertie’s friends D. circus’s owners
6. In the last paragraph, the boy lifted the rifle at the lion to________.
A. kill the lion out of helplessness B. protect himself from being chased
C. threaten the lion back to the wild D. show his anger towards his father
7. The passage intends to show that________.
A. circuses are the last places for animals to live
B. animals belonging to the wild should be set free
C. parents are sometimes cruel to their children
D. people and animals can be faithful to each other

Jasmine is on my Zoom screen. She is pulling her hair. As she starts talking, the rate of the pulling increases. “My exam is on Friday,” she tells me, “What if I get a question I can’t answer? What if I don’t get a good grade?”
Jasmine is just one of the students suffering from test anxiety. The word “anxiety” originates from Latin, meaning narrowing. The “narrowing” describes what’s happening in Jasmine’s nervous system. Basically, the sympathetic (交感神经) branch — fight-or-flight — has switched on, and her muscles have narrowed as if she’s preparing to do battle or run away. Commonly known the “rest and digest” branch, the parasympathetic nervous (副交感神经) system plays an important role in thinking and learning by promoting a state of relaxation and calmness. When the parasympathetic nervous system starts working, it reduces stress and anxiety, improving focus and concentration.
There are three simple tools for engaging the parasympathetic branch: breathing, grounding, and sensing. Breathing means a steady flow of breath; grounding means feeling the chair and the floor supporting you; and sensing means turning on one or more of the five senses.
In more than 40 years of coaching test-takers, I have observed how often they hold their breath, how nervous and ungrounded they are, and how unaware they are of feeling the touch of clothes on their own bodies. No wonder people are exhausted by the end of a long test! When they use the three calming tools, they create the state necessary for sitting still, thinking, remembering, reasoning, and, finally, answering questions.
We all face countless tests in everyday life. Unexpected, unwanted things happen to everyone. Wouldn’t it be a whole lot better if we faced the tests by being calm? In case you’re wondering, the answer is “Yes!” But the real question is: Instead of forcing students to progress through endless comparison and competition, why don’t we teach them how to stay calm?
8. Why does the author mention Jasmine in the first paragraph?
A. To show students’ intense emotions.
B. To introduce a problem students face.
C. To compare different attitudes towards tests.
D. To analyse students’ behaviors during video calls.
9. What change would be brought when the parasympathetic nervous system is at work?
A. Improved attention. B. Worsened anxiety.
C. Tightened muscles. D. Quickened response.
10. From the last paragraph we can infer that the writer thinks it important ________.
A. to take some tests to make progress
B. to attach importance to comparison and competition
C. to learn to avoid unexpected and unwanted things in life
D. to prepare students with the ways to keep calm during tests
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. What do students face in tests? B. How to deal with test anxiety?
C. How to engage the nervous system? D. What should students do to avoid tests?
D
Energy crops can be used for heat, electricity and even biofuels. They will become more important as the world turns away from fossil fuels, such as oil and coal. In a new study, researchers from the University of Surrey have shown that where you choose to plant energy crops makes a big difference to biodiversity.
A detailed analysis has shown that, compared to planting them elsewhere, planting energy crops on existing agricultural land in places like China and Central Europe could diminish harm to biodiversity. Planting in these locations could then allow agricultural land in other places to be restored to natural habitats, maximizing the benefits to biodiversity.
The study is published in the Journal of Applied Ecology.
Sophie Tudge, who carried out the research at Surrey’s Center for Environment and Sustainability, said, “Our study suggests that, as far as biodiversity is concerned, it is always best to restore farmland to nature rather than re-plant it with energy crops.”
“Yet, we are realists. In the future, more fuel will come from crops, and it is far better to plant them on existing farms than to destroy remaining natural habitats. We have shown that where you plant those crops makes a huge difference to how many species continue to grow healthily,” she added.
When farmland is restored to nature, it creates new habitats for many species. Using that land to plant energy crops instead can be a missed opportunity to improve biodiversity. Given that energy crops need to be planted somewhere, researchers calculated which locations would have the smallest net impact on biodiversity.
They studied which habitats contained the richest mix of species. They then compared that information with maps of land use and information about where energy crops could produce the biggest yields. The researchers found that the harm to biodiversity could be minimized in places like Central Europe and the east coasts of the U. S. and China. However, food security, farmers’ willingness and surrounding energy infrastructure (基础设施) are also important. “After all, we depend on them to grow crops,” she said.
12. What does the underlined word “diminish” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. make something smaller B. increase greatly
C. keep unchanged D. get rid of completely
13. Which of the following is right according to this passage?
A. For the sake of biodiversity, restore natural habitats instead of planting energy plants.
B. With the researchers’ new findings, fossil fuels will have no place to fit in in the future.
C. Highest yields are the priority and whether wild species grow healthily makes no difference.
D. Careful consideration has been taken by researchers to decide where to grow energy plants.
14. According to the last paragraph, ______ contribute to the successful planting of energy plants.
A. the lower cost of seeds and equipment B. modern techniques and better tools
C remote location and diverse species D. supportive labour and facilities
15. What can probably be the best title for this passage?
A. Farmland belongs to nature, forever B. Energy crops put an end to fossil fuels
C. Biodiversity calls for concern D. Where to plant energy crops matters

The less you spend, the more you save. It sounds simple in theory, but in practice, it’s much more complicated. Spending is built into our daily habits, which sometimes can get us addicted to buying stuff. ___16___ It’s kind of like a crash diet, but in a good way!
___17___
Despite the name, a no-spend challenge doesn’t mean you sit on your hands and spend no money whatsoever. After all, you don’t want to fall behind on your bills, and there are some necessities you simply can’t do without. The basic premise (前提) of a no-spend challenge is to cut out non-essential spending for a certain amount of time. It could be for a week, a month or even an entire year.
What can you spend money on during a no-spend challenge?
If you need to purchase something during your no-spend challenge, it should be something that’s necessary and you absolutely can’t do without. So groceries, yes. Candy bar in the checkout line, no. Also, no new iPhone, even if you’ve been dreaming about an upgrade. No new shoes, even if they’re on a huge sale. This is not the time to make excuses to buy stuff you don’t really need. ___18___ The goal of this challenge isn’t to make life harder on yourself by cutting out spending on essential expenses.
The financial benefits of a no-spend challenge
___19___ You can use the extra money you normally would have spent to build up your emergency fund. Or you might want to put the money toward other financial goals, like saving for a new car or an upcoming vacation. While no-spend challenges are designed to be temporary, you can always extend your challenge. ___20___
A. Decide acceptable purchases.
B. What is a no-spend challenge?
C. There should be no quick-fix approach.
D. When will you start your no-spend challenge?
E. Why not treat it as more of a lifestyle change?
F. Sometimes the best way is to go on a spending freeze.
G. A no-spend challenge can be a boost to your financial situation.

“I…I thought you could use it for something.” Susan’s explanation did nothing to help us understand why a dark blue carpet remnant (零头布料) was being given as a birthday gift. The murmured “thanks” could be barely heard as Susan handed it to Holly. Holly’s feeling didn’t become evident until the following evening. “Well, I guess we know how much my best friend thinks of me, huh, Mom?” she said quietly, with her head down.
The next morning, I carried a garbage bag outside. My heart sank as I lifted the lid of the garbage can and saw the gift from Susan lying there. Hesitating only a moment, I picked it up and brought it into the house.
“Susan invited you and me to go over to her house after school tomorrow.” One day later, Holly announced as she arrived home from school. Although her voice carried a so-what attitude, I did sense something excited. The next day, we drove to the destination along the winding country road. A tall woman stood in the doorway to greet us as we approached the small farmhouse. The house was shabby but neat, decorated with used furniture. From the chat with the woman, we knew Susan had long been separated from her parents and she was Susan’s foster mother. A warm light shone in her eyes as she explained to me her fondness for Susan. I came to respect this generous-hearted woman who had opened her home to a young girl and attempted to make a difference in her life.
As daylight began to fade, we offered our thanks and said goodbye. Holly sat quietly in the car, leaning her body forward with her eyes fixed on the road ahead.

Bertie knew there was something in the wind. His mother had been sad in recent days, not sick, just strangely sad.

根据第一段中的“A boy needs a proper education. We’ve found the right place for you, a school near Salisbury in England. (男孩需要适当的教育。我们为你找到了合适的地方,英格兰索尔兹伯里附近的一所学校)”和第三段中的“Looking across at Bertie’s mother, he took a deep breath. Then he told Bertie he had met a circus owner from France, who was over in Africa looking for lions to buy. He would come to their farm in a few days. (他望着伯蒂的母亲,深吸了一口气。然后他告诉伯蒂,他遇到了一个来自法国的马戏团老板,他正在非洲寻找要买的狮子。 过几天他就会到他们的农场来)”可知,博蒂长大了父母想让他去上学,父母想把他养的一头狮子卖给马戏团。由此推知,母亲可能认为把狮子卖了,会让博蒂伤心,所以作为母亲也感到有些难过。故选C。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文““No! You can’t send him to a circus!” said Bertie. (“不!你不能把他送去马戏团!”博蒂说)”及“He’ll be shut up behind bars. I promised him he never would be. (他将被关进笼子里。我向他保证他永远不会)”和下文“will come to see him and laugh at him. (会来看他并嘲笑他)”可推知,划线词they指代那些来看狮子的观众。故选A。
根据倒数第三段中的““Be wild now,” he whispered. “You’ve got to be wild. Don’t ever come home. All my life I’ll think of you, I promise I will.” He buried his head in the lion’s neck. Then, Bertie clambered down off the hill and walked away. (“野性一点吧,”他低声说。“你必须要野性。永远不要回家。我这一生都会想念你,我保证。”他把头埋在狮子的脖子里。然后,博蒂从山上爬下来,走开了)”及倒数第二段“When he looked back, the lion was still sitting there watching him; but then he stood up, yawned, stretched, and sprang down after him. Bertie shouted at him, but he kept coming. He threw sticks. He threw stones. Nothing worked.

B 9. A 10. D 11. B

C. remote location and diverse species D. supportive labour and facilities
15. What can probably be the best title for this passage?
A. Farmland belongs to nature, forever B. Energy crops put an end to fossil fuels
C. Biodiversity calls for concern D. Where to plant energy crops matters
A 13. D 14. D 15. D

根据下文的内容“Planting in these locations could then allow agricultural land in other places to be restored to natural habitats, maximizing the benefits to biodiversity. (在这些地方种植可以使其他地方的农业用地恢复到自然栖息地,最大限度地提高生物多样性的效益。)”可知,在在中国和中欧等地的现有农业用地上种植能源作物可以提高生物多样性的效益,也就是减少对生物多样性的损害。所以,划线单词diminish的意义为“减少;降低”。故选A项。
根据第六段的句子“Given that energy crops need to be planted somewhere, researchers calculated which locations would have the smallest net impact on biodiversity. (考虑到能源作物需要在某个地方种植,研究人员计算出哪些地点对生物多样性的净影响最小。)”和第七段的句子“They studied which habitats contained the richest mix of species. They then compared that information with maps of land use and information about where energy crops could produce the biggest yields. (他们研究了哪种栖息地的物种混合最丰富。然后,他们将这些信息与土地使用地图以及能源作物产量最高的地方的信息进行了比较。)”可知,研究者已仔细权衡种植位置,包括物种多样性、土地利用和现实因素。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段的句子“However, food security, farmers’ willingness and surrounding energy infrastructure (基础设施) are also important. “After all, we depend on them to grow crops,” she said. (然而,粮食安全、农民意愿和周边能源基础设施也很重要。她说:“毕竟,我们要靠它们来种庄稼。”)”可知,农民意愿对应“支持性劳动”,基础设施对应“设施”,两者共同促进成功种植。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。全文核心为在哪里种植能源作物对生物多样性的影响最小,如第一段的句子“In a new study, researchers from the University of Surrey have shown that where you choose to plant energy crops makes a big difference to biodiversity. (在一项新的研究中,萨里大学的研究人员表明,你选择在哪里种植能源作物对生物多样性有很大影响。)”,并通过研究数据强化这一主题。D项“Where to plant energy crops matters (在哪里种植能源作物很重要)”作为本文题目,与文章主题相符合。故选D项。

Or you might want to put the money toward other financial goals like saving for a new car or an upcoming vacation. While no-spend challenges are designed to be temporary, you can always extend your challenge. ___20___
A. Decide acceptable purchases.
B. What is a no-spend challenge?
C There should be no quick-fix approach.
D. When will you start your no-spend challenge?
E. Why not treat it as more of a lifestyle change?
F. Sometimes the best way is to go on a spending freeze.
G. A no-spend challenge can be a boost to your financial situation.

故填of。
故填has been driven。
the number of“……的数量”,为固定短语,所以此处使用定冠词the。故填the。
故填when。
故填To protect。
