Choosing a major is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while you’re in college. It’s important that you make your choice confidently and after some consideration.
There’s Nothing Wrong With Being “Undecided”.
Between 20% and 50% of college freshmen enter school without a declared major. Keep in mind that there’s nothing wrong with remaining “undecided” or “undeclared” for the first few years of your college career. You can use this time to decide what you’re interested in. Also, keep in mind that even if you do declare a major your freshman year, you can always change your mind. About one-third of first-time college students change their major within three years. Even more, over 60% of college graduates say they would go back and change their major if they could, primarily to pursue their passion areas and expand their job opportunities.
Explore Your Passions and Abilities.
Set aside some time to really explore your passions and take stock of your unique abilities. With an undeclared major to start, you can take time to really delve deep into what interests you. Join clubs around campus to connect with fellow students who share your interests. Take electives in areas that you might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience. For example, when else might you be able to take a poetry course or an art history seminar? College is the perfect time to step out of your box and expand your horizons. As a student with an undeclared major, you’re uniquely positioned to do just that.
Consider Employment Opportunities.
While it’s important to choose a major that interests you, it’s also critical to choose a college major that will provide you with future employment opportunities. Statistically, the college majors that tend to have the most earning power are in STEM. These majors might include health sciences or computer engineering. Business majors can also expect a higher than average earning potential. That being said, employers frequently recognize that graduates who majored in the liberal arts have valuable soft skills, too, including strong communication, written and verbal skills, and leadership abilities. The key is to pick a major that will be marketable for the career you’re interested in pursuing.
Talk to an Academic Advisor.
If you need a little guidance, set up an appointment with an academic advisor or career counselors. Career development counselors and academic advisors can help you narrow down your options. If you have an idea of what classes you’ve most enjoyed and what career paths are most appealing to you, working with one of these professionals might be the final push you need to pick a major.
Still have some doubts now? You can submit your questions Here.

Into the Night
The lights from the cottage windows disappear, as we follow a dark footpath through a field into the open countryside. Thick clouds prevent the moonlight from lighting up the way ahead. Yet, as my eyes begin to get used to the darkness, the landscape around me reveals itself in a new light.
Mount Caburn, an iron-age hill fort (堡垒), looks like shadows against the sky. On the horizon is a tree bent by the wind. The rocky outcrop (露出的部分) at the top of the field turns out to be a flock of sleeping sheep. A fox cries, a pheasant crows, and the air is full of a strong earthy scent.
“For most of human history, man lived in close contact with the land,” says Nigel Berman, my guide. “Only in the past few hundred years have we shut ourselves off from our natural surroundings. Walking at night is a powerful way of reconnecting. When your vision is reduced, your other senses are sharpened.”
Nigel and I walk from the village of Glynde across the South Downs towards the town of Lewes. It is a walk I know well by day, but at night everything is different, and a familiar wander becomes a mini adventure. When Nigel told me not to bring a torch, I was alarmed. I can’t remember the last time I used my night vision and I’m not even sure how it works.
Normally at this time of night, I would be having a glass of wine in front of the television, but being out in the countryside is a purer form of relaxation. I forget about work and family tensions, and begin to blend into the surroundings. There is no one other than Nigel to see or hear me and, with little visual distraction, my mind calms. I am aware of the breeze on my face, the rustle (沙沙声) of leaves, and as I watch the clouds slowly changing color against the sky like a natural sound and light show, it feels fascinating.
Having got used to the dark, we continue walking and the path that leads up the escarpment (峭壁) of Saxon Down now appears to almost shine in front of us. We climb carefully, feeling our way on the uneven ground. Walking at night is not without risk, but with knowledge and preparation it opens up a new side to walking.
As we reach the top, Lewes appears below as a twinkly mass of lights, a sight I would generally consider as inviting. In just a few hours, however, I find myself unwilling to walk back down. Walking at night is like discovering a new world on your doorstep. As Henry David Thoreau wrote in Night and Moonlight: “Night is certainly more novel and less profane (世俗的) than day.”
40. According to Nigel Berman, why is walking at night significant?
A. It helps people appreciate natural surroundings.
B. It is a way to take risks and explore new places.
C. It improves our vision and sharpens other senses.
D. It makes us avoid distractions from work and family.
41. Why did the author feel alarmed when Nigel told them not to bring a torch?
A. He was afraid of getting lost in the dark.
B. He hardly had any trust in Nigel as a guide.
C. He didn’t know how to use his night vision.
D. He worried about the way on uneven ground.
42. The night walk brought the following benefits to the author except ________.
A. a reconnection with nature
B. a chance of abandoning wine
C. an escape from daily tensions
D. an approach to getting relaxed
43. What can we learn about the author from the article?
A. He had gone for a walk on his own at night before.
B. He intentionally picked a cloudy night for his walk.
C. He enjoyed the feeling after reaching the top of the mountain.
D. He badly wanted to go home to have a glass of wine after the walk.
44. What is the article mainly about?
A. Describing his night hike through the countryside.
B. Contrasting the experience of day and night walking.
C. Encouraging readers to go on a night walk themselves.
D. Exploring the history of human connection with nature.

Average age is rising around the world — a demographic (人口统计) change that may pose a significant challenge to efforts to slow down climate change.
Hossein Estiri at Harvard University and Emilio Zagheni of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Germany, have found that energy use increases as we get older, and not just because we tend to get wealthier. An ageing population could mean a greater proportion of society with higher energy use, their study suggests.
They combined two decades, worth of data from thousands of US households and used this to build a model to reveal how energy use varied across 17 age groups between 1987 and 2009. They found that, on average, children’s energy consumption climbs as they grow up, before dipping slightly when they leave home. Consumption then rises again when people hit their 30s, before briefly dropping after 55, and then beginning to climb again. The study involved factors such as income, local climate and the age, type and size of a person’s home. The increase in energy use at various points in our lifespan (寿命) seems to be the result of life style and how our needs change as we age.
Why does demand grow so much in our 30s? “We need more of everything. More space, a bigger TV two fridges,” says Estiri. The study found that, in warmer parts of the US, energy use increases in people over the age of 65 — probably as a result of increased use of air conditioning, This suggests that there is a feedback effect between climate change and an ageing population that will only make matters worse.
Heat waves have become more common in the US in recent years and are expected to become more frequent due to global warming. More older people using more electrical energy to keep cool as temperatures rise could add to emissions (排放), and thus drive more warming until our energy supply becomes entirely fossil fuel-free.
“This confluence (汇集) of population, ageing and climate change on energy demand is really important to start thin king about,” says Estiri. Benjamin Sovacool at the University of Sussex, UK, says the work shows the importance of demographics when it comes to cutting carbon emissions. Most modelling of climate change mitigation (减缓气候变化的模型) assumes people’s energy consumption either stays the same or only changes by a small amount over time.
“This study directly challenges that entire body of research by forcing it to fight with the temporality and complexity of the consumption of energy,” says Sovacool.
Catherine Mitchell at the University of Exeter, UK, says the research could have an important influence on policy makers. “What the paper says is that there is a lot of work about how buildings use energy, but probably not enough about how the people in them use energy,” she says.
45. By saying “not just because we tend to get wealthier” in Paragraph 2, the writer probably means that _______.
A. poor people can’t bring down the high demand for energy
B. a comfortable life is not the main cause of increased energy use
C. there are some other reasons leading to the increase in energy consumption
D. people being wealthy or not has nothing to do with the rise of energy consumption
46. What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph3?
A. Children consumes more energy when they leave home.
B. Energy consumption drops briefly before people hit 55.
C. The researchers built a model to study the data from US households.
D. Energy consumption varies with the change of lifestyle and demand at different ages.
47. Which of the following statements is Hossein Estiri most likely to support?
A. Energy will stop increasing when people get older.
B. His research could inspire policymakers to change current policies.
C. Various factors influencing energy consumption should be considered.
D. Old people should use fossil, fuel-free rather than electrical energy to keep cool.
48. What is the shortcoming of most modeling of climate change mitigation?
A. It is expensive and difficult to promote.
B. It overestimates the household energy consumption.
C. It did not take climate change adaptation into account.
D. It regards energy consumption as stable or as only slightly changing.
49. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. More emphasis should be put on people’s energy use.
B. The government can’t do much without the support of the study.
C. It is the buildings, not the people in side, that consume the majority of the energy.
D. Policymakers have been working on how to cut down people’s energy use.

【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍全球人口老龄化对能源消耗的影响及相关研究发现,探讨其与气候变化的关联。
【45题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Hossein Estiri at Harvard University and Emilio Zagheni of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Germany, have found that energy use increases as we get older, and not just because we tend to get wealthier. An ageing population could mean a greater proportion of society with higher energy use, their study suggests.(哈佛大学的侯赛因·埃斯蒂里和德国马克斯·普朗克人口研究学院的埃米利奥·扎格尼发现,能源使用量随着年龄增长而增加,而这不仅仅是因为我们往往会变得更富有。他们的研究表明,人口老龄化可能意味着社会中能源使用量较高的人群比例更大。)”可知,能源使用量随着年龄增长而增加,人口老龄化可能意味着社会中能源使用量较高的人群比例更大,此处强调能源消耗增加不仅归因于财富增长,还有其他因素如年龄变化,由此可知,“not just because we tend to get wealthier”意味着除财富之外还有其他因素导致能源消耗增加。故选C项。
【46题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“The increase in energy use at various points in our lifespan seems to be the result of life style and how our needs change as we age.(我们生命周期中各个阶段的能源使用量增加,似乎是生活方式和需求随年龄变化的结果。)”并结合上文内容可知,第三段旨在说明能源消耗随不同年龄的生活方式和需求变化而波动。故选D项。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The study involved factors such as income, local climate and the age, type and size of a person’s home.(该研究涉及收入、当地气候以及个人住房的年龄、类型和面积等因素。)”及第六段中的“This confluence of population, ageing and climate change on energy demand is really important to start thinking about,” says Estiri.(埃斯蒂里说:“人口、老龄化和气候变化对能源需求的共同影响确实需要开始思考。”)”可知,埃斯蒂里认为影响能源消耗的各种因素(如人口结构、气候等)需综合考虑。故选C项。
【48题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段中的“Most modelling of climate change mitigation assumes people’s energy consumption either stays the same or only changes by a small amount over time.(大多数减缓气候变化的模型假设人们的能源消耗要么保持不变,要么随时间仅发生少量变化。)”可知,大多数气候变化缓解模型的缺点是认为能源消耗是稳定的或只是轻微的变化。故选D项。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Catherine Mitchell at the University of Exeter, UK, says the research could have an important influence on policy makers. “What the paper says is that there is a lot of work about how buildings use energy, but probably not enough about how the people in them use energy,” she says. (英国埃克塞特大学的凯瑟琳·米切尔表示,这项研究可能会对政策制定者产生重要影响。她说:“论文指出,关于建筑物如何使用能源的研究很多,但关于居住者如何使用能源的研究可能不够。”)”可知,最后一段强调应更多关注“人”的能源使用情况。故选A项。
D
When people learn to play video games, they are learning a new literacy. Of course, this is not the way the word “literacy” is normally used. Traditionally, people think of literacy as the ability to read and write. Why, then, should we think of literacy more broadly?
Nowadays, language is not the only important communication system. Images, graphs, diagrams and many other visual symbols are particularly significant. Thus, the idea of different types of “visual literacy” would seem to be an important one. For example, being able to read the images in advertising is one type of visual literacy.
Furthermore, very often today words and images of various sorts are juxtaposed in a variety of ways. In newspapers and magazines as well as in textbooks, images take up more and more of the space alongside words. In fact, in many modern high school and college textbooks, images not only take up more space, they now carry meanings that are independent of the words in the text. If you can’t read these images, you will not be able to understand their meanings from the words in the text as was more usual in the past.
Now there are different ways to read different types of texts. Literacy is multiple, then, in the sense that the legal literacy needed for reading law books is not the same as the literacy needed for reading physics texts or cartoon books. And we should not be too quick to dismiss the latter form of literacy. Many cartoon books are full of images that would make a modern literary critic’s heart beat fast and confuse any otherwise normal adult.
Once we see this multiplicity of literacy, we realize that when we think about reading and writing, we have to think beyond print. Reading and writing in any field, whether it is law, rap songs, academic essays or cartoon books, are not the only ways of decoding(解密) print. Video games are a new form of art. They will not replace books; they will sit beside them, interact with them, and change them and their role in society in various ways, as, indeed, they are already doing strongly with movies. We have no idea yet how people “read” video games, what meanings they make from them. Still less do we know how they will “read” them in the future.
50. What is the broad meaning of literacy?
A. The ability to read, write and view.
B. The ability to read, listen and play.
C. The ability to speak, write and think.
D. The ability to listen, speak and think.
51. What does the underlined word “juxtaposed” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Put together. B. Pulled out.
C. Taken away. D. Replaced with.
52. How would cartoon books probably make a modern literary critic feel?
A. Proud. B. Upset.
C. Grateful. D. Curious.
53 The author says that video games _______________.
A. are too violent to risk experimenting with for the purposes of understanding literacy
B. are unrealistic and should not fall into the same categories as the other texts he describes
C. are not yet entirely understood in terms of literacy, but are already impacting other forms of expression such as filmmaking
D. are irrelevant in academic discussion because no one has yet determined how to explain the ways that people understand them
54. What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph?
A. A historical explanation of the very first video game and its evolution.
B. A technological definition of video games, how they are made, and how they are played.
C. Examples of the way that some people currently interpret video games and what they mean to them.
D. A price comparison of video game consoles and whether or not quality has a direct impact on literacy.
55. In which section of a magazine may this text appear?
A. Education. B. Health.
C. Advertisement. D. Traveling.
【答案】50. A 51. A 52. B 53. C 54. C 55. A
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇议论文。文章指出因为如今的交流方式多种多样不仅限于文字,我们需要学习新的视觉上的“读写能力”。
【50题详解】
细节理解题。第二段对于时下literacy的含义作了解释,它已不再局限于读写能力,根据“Thus, the idea of different types of “visual literacy” would seem to be an important one.”可知,视觉上的读写能力,也就是观看各种图片、照片、图表等视觉符号的能力也包含其中。故选A项。
故选A项。
【52题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段最后一句“Many cartoon books are full of images that would make a modern literary critic’s heart beat fast and confuse any otherwise normal adult.”
根据最后一段中“They will not replace books; they will sit beside them, interact with them, and change them and their role in society in various ways, as, indeed, they are already doing strongly with movies. We have no idea yet how people “read” video games, what meanings they make from them.”
故选A项。
Ⅱ卷(共35分)
第四部分: (共2 小节; 满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达 (满分10分)
Some people live to climb the highest mountains. Some people live only dreaming about it while others live to avoid ever climbing at all. But one thing is certain, all people encounter mountains in their life.
When I was a little girl, my family moved to a tiny town at the bottom of a big mountain. One day after school, while exploring the green woods of this magnificent mountain, I almost fell on a set of stairs. What could these steps lead to? Curiosity got the best of me as I knew it would be starting to get dark soon. I started climbing up those strangely mysterious steps.
I climbed and climbed. There was nothing but just green bushes and these steps. I had to reach the top! But it was now getting real dark. If I kept going I might not be able to see my way back. My mom would be worried sick if I didn’t come home soon. So I ran back home almost in the dark while trying not to get too scared.
Anxiously I went to bed dreaming about what I would find at the top of this magical mountain. Could there be a castle up there? Maybe I would find a monster(怪物). Maybe I was taking the risk of never coming back home. Or, maybe all I would find was absolutely nothing! But something inside me was going to climb that mountain at all cost. I could hardly wait to try this adventure again.
Now we live in a world surrounded by the "can’t do" attitudes. We all fall down. We all have doubts and regrets. Still we must climb and dream about what’s at the top of our mountain.
36. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Most graduates went back to college and changed their majors for a brighter future.
B. Most students frequently change their majors throughout their college years.
C. It is all right to remain undecided on majors for only the freshman year.
D. You don’t necessarily need to declare your majors upon entering college.
37. You are advised to take electives as described in the third paragraph because _______.
A the courses and seminars are popular with college students
B. it helps you fully explore where your interest lies
C. you can share your common interest with your fellow students
D. your major lies in the areas, you can’t miss them
38. Ani example of having good soft skills is that _______.
A. you express yourself well in a controversial business discussion

Normally, at this time of night, I would be having a glass of wine in front of the television, but being out in the countryside is a purer form of relaxation.
A He was afraid of getting lost in the dark.

A More emphasis should be put on people’s energy use.
B The government can’t do much without the support of the study.
C. It is the buildings, not the people in side, that consume the majority of the energy.
D. Policymakers have been working on how to cut down people’s energy use.
A. Proud. B. Upset.
C. Grateful. D. Curious.
53. The author says that video games _______________.
A. are too violent to risk experimenting with for the purposes of understanding literacy
B. are unrealistic and should not fall into the same categories as the other texts he describes
C. are not yet entirely understood in terms of literacy, but are already impacting other forms of expression such as filmmaking
D. are irrelevant in academic discussion because no one has yet determined how to explain the ways that people understand them
D. Traveling.

Monsters may appear or the night will fall. But never ever give up on your dream! Never let anyone tell you, "You can’t." Dream big and climb high!
56. What made the author start to climb up the stairs to the mountain top? (no more than 5 words)
57. Why did the author hurry back home without reaching the top of the mountain? Give two reasons. (no more than 15 words)
58. How would you describe the author in terms of personalities according to Paragraph 4? (no more than 10 words)
59. How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? (no more than 5 words)
60. What’s your attitude towards the "mountain" in your life? Please explain. (no more than 20 words)
