When a new cell phone starts to be sold in stores, many people rush out to buy one. We all want the newest, latest thing. But what should we do with our old cell phones?
Mike Townsend works at Total Recall, a cell phone recycling company. “Don’t throw your old phone away. Send it to us and we’ll recycle it,” he says. “ If you throw it away, it goes with other rubbish to become landfill. In other words, it is put in a big hole in the ground—and it becomes a big problem.”
Cell phones contain some toxic materials (有毒物质), like lead, mercury and cadmium. If your phone goes to a landfill, these toxic materials can get out and get into the water under the ground. That’s the water we want to drink or the water that goes into rivers or the ocean. Millions of cell phones are thrown away every year.
“At Total Recall, we take the old phones apart. Most of the materials in a cell phone can be recycled and used again,” explains Mike. “We sell the parts and they are used to make new products. For example, phone batteries contain nickel and cadmium. The nickel is used to make steel, and the cadmium can be used to make new batteries. The plastic cases of the phones are made into plastic fence posts.”
Mike says recycling your old phone is easy. “You can usually take it into a cell phone shop and they’ll send it to us.” So, before you throw your old cell phone away, use it one last time: search for a cell phone recycling company near you and give them a call.

The human body is a complex machine. From the day we were born, our bodies grow and change in response to our e 51 , diet, and habits. The body has many different organ systems and parts that work together to allow us to breathe, move, see, talk, and digest food all at the same time. Most of the time we don’t care what is happening in our bodies; usually it is only when we get sick or feel pain that we notice.
Many people do not take enough care of their complex machines. Bad habits like smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and eating junk food damage our bodies. Stress can also cause h 52 problems. People who worry a lot or have busy jobs often don’t get enough sleep, or don’t eat properly. We also damage our bodies by playing sports or having accidents. B 53 , a recent survey in the U.K. found that 14 percent of people had visited a hospital clinic in the previous three months. The two most c 54 reasons were for injury and poisoning.
Just like any machine, different body parts sometimes go wrong from old age. In fact, a study in the U.S. found that 60 percent to 70 percent of all patients in the Emergency Room were aged 75 or over. Luckily, older people who s 55 from an illness or injury can now receive treatment to help extend their lives. Due to the increase in the population of elderly people, gerontology (老年医学) is now one of the fastest g 56 areas of medicine. It is now common for older people with damaged joints, for example, to have surgery to replace the old joint with a new one made of plastic or metal.
As with any machine, the better you take care of it, the longer it will last. Of course, the best way to take care of your amazing machine is to eat the right foods, do sports r 57 , and get enough sleep.
Oh, and don’t forget to smile!
D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题):( 12分)
Liu Yiran, 18, remembers clearly how her schoolmates bullied (欺凌) her.
Liu went to a high school mainly for Chinese students in southern California, US. On March 30 last year, about ten of her schoolmates took her to a park nearby their school. There, they forced Liu to take off her clothes, hit her and burnt her with cigarettes. It went on for more than five hours, and it was all because of disagreements over a dinner bill, their hometowns and a boy, reported the Los Angeles Times.
When this reached the public, people were shocked. And now the bullies will get punishments from US laws. Three of the bullies, who are 19, were sent to prison on Feb 17. Zhai Yunyao, the main bully, faces 13 years in prison. Yang Yuhan will get 10 years and Zhang Xinlei will get six years.
The three students were “deeply shocked” after learning this. They thought they were just playing a trick on Liu and would only get punished by their school.
This just shows how ignorant (无知) Chinese students are about US laws and bullying, wrote China Daily.
In China, bullying will only be punished by law when it causes very serious physical harm. However, there is other bullying, such as lighter physical or even emotional harm. But people don’t pay enough attention to school bullying, taking it only as small fights between students, according to TangJun, from Renmin University of China.
Thus, education about bullying is important, said legaldaily. com, as well as more specific laws and anti-bullying (反欺凌) school programs. “Don’t think school bullying is uncommon, and then it may be solved,” it wrote.

A. Choose the best answer (根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案)(12 分)
