In a quiet village in Xingning county, Gaungdong province, a 15-year-old boy named Zhang discovered that he had taken over his late grandfather’s workshop. While his friends turned to modern LED lights, Zhang stuck to traditional methods, making paper lanterns with ancient patterns. “These old-fashioned lanterns belong to the past. No one buys these anymore,” his friends would say with a dismissive laugh, convinced that his efforts were fruitless.
However, circumstances took a different turn for Zhang and his beloved pursuit. One evening, a wandering travel blogger came upon the village and was immediately fascinated by the sight of Zhang’s vividly painted paper lanterns. With a click of the camera, the blogger captured the essence of Zhang’s work and shared the images online. To everyone’s surprise, orders began to pour in from all corners of the globe. Yet, despite this unexpected increase in demand, Zhang found himself struggling to keep up with the orders all by himself. It was during this time of challenge that his grandfather’s wise words came across his mind: “Teach others; a single thread can’t weave a tapestry (织锦).”
Motivated by his grandfather’s advice and the growing interest in his work, Zhang decided to open his workshop to the villagers, sharing his knowledge and skills. Together, they began to renew long-forgotten designs such as the elegant totem (图腾) “Phoenix Ascending”, a symbol of rebirth. The elderly craftsmen of the village, who had once feared their traditional techniques would be lost to time, now found a new generation eager to learn. Teenagers, with a modern twist, added QR codes (二维码) to the lanterns, which, when scanned, would unlock a treasure of cultural and historical stories.
As the Spring Festival approached, the village, under Zhang’s guidance, launched a grand lantern path that attracted thousands of visitors. The path became a guiding star, not just in the physical sense, but also as a symbol of hope and cultural renewal. A museum guardian, who witnessed the scene, remarked with profound insight, “Tradition isn’t about holding onto the past—it’s about carrying its spirit forward.”
4. Why did Zhang’s friends doubt his lanterns?
A. The designs lacked artistic value.
B. The production costs were too high.
C. They were environmentally harmful.
D. The demand for them was in decline.
5. What caused the sudden increase in the lantern orders?
A. Zhang’s online promotion. B. Pictures posted on social media.
C. Guidance from Zhang’s grandfather. D. Recommendation from local government.
6. What was the main concern of the elderly craftsmen?
A. Young people’s lack of interest in totem.
B. The difficulty in restoring ancient patterns.
C. The possible disappearance of tradition.
D. The improper use of modern technology.
7. The museum guardian’s remarks imply that cultural tradition should be ________.
A. preserved in old forms B. kept alive through generations
C. used to attract tourists D. combined with modern technology

Pain relief might grow on trees after all. Published in Nature Communications, a new international study reveals that nature exposure goes beyond just making us feel better about pain — it actually changes how our brains process painful stimuli at a fundamental level.
“Numerous studies have shown that people consistently report feeling less pain when exposed to nature. Yet until now, the underlying reasons for this effect were unclear,” explains lead study author Max Steininger from the University of Vienna, in a statement. “Our study is the first to provide evidence from brain scans (扫描) that this isn’t just a ‘placebo’ effect.”
To get clear answers, the researchers designed a controlled experiment using brain scanning technology to watch brain activity during painful experiences while forty-nine participants viewed different environments. They were placed in a brain scanner and shown virtual scenes of three different settings: a natural lake with trees, an urban setting with buildings by the same lake, and an indoor office. While viewing these scenes, participants received brief electric shocks to their hands, some painful and some not, and rated how intense and unpleasant each shock felt.
When viewing the nature scenes, participants consistently reported less pain compared to when they viewed urban or indoor environments. The brain scans confirmed these weren’t just subjective differences; actual pain-related brain activity decreased when participants viewed nature. Advanced brain analysis techniques were employed to determine which aspects of pain processing were affected by nature exposure. When participants viewed nature scenes while receiving painful stimuli, their brains showed significantly reduced activity in regions that handle the sensory and physical aspects of pain.
“Our findings suggest that the pain-relieving effect of nature is genuine. What’s particularly promising is that even virtual nature can produce these effects. This could be especially valuable in healthcare settings,” says Steininger. The ancient wisdom of turning to the wild now has modern science to back it up. Whether it’s a forest path, a park bench, or even a nature documentary on your screen, regular exposure to greenery might be a valuable addition to our pain management.
8. What does the underlined phrase “a placebo effect” in paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. An alternative treatment. B. A psychological feeling.
C. A personal preference. D. A potential impact.
9. What can we learn about the experiment?
A. Participants were tested in virtual scenes.
B. Pain intensity was rated by visual observation.
C. Participants reported most pain in an urban setting.
D. Nature exposure activated pain-related brain areas.
10. Steininger thinks the study is particularly instructive for ________.
A. psychological researchers B. park designers
C. emergency physicians D. hospital managers
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Ancient wisdom works better. B. Virtual scenes make us feel good.
C. Nature bears pain-relievers. D. Technology helps pain management.
D
As AI continues its extraordinary rise as a creative force, we’re entering an era of “aesthetic (美学) inflation,” where seemingly perfectly-composed images, poetic articles, and cinematic storytelling have become available to anyone, instantly and at no cost. Say, a symphony in the exact style of Beethoven or an essay in the voice of Hemingway can be generated in seconds. Does the perfect AI art, however, carry the same value?
The value of artworks, as it is, goes beyond what is shown in the museum or the concert hall. We admire Vincent van Gogh not just for Starry Night but for the confusion, vision, and perseverance that shaped it. We don’t just listen to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony; We are impressed at the fact that it was composed while he was deaf. These stories give their creation depth, reminding us that art is not just about aesthetics or skill.
Perfection has never belonged to humanity. Across cultures, imperfection isn’t just accepted–it’s embraced. The deep connection between imperfection and creativity in artworks is everywhere. The latter has always made space for mistakes, rough edges, and raw emotion, like the quake in a brushstroke, the crack in a voice -these aren’t things to be fixed, they’re what give art its soul and make human-created art more valuable.
Lost in great artworks like a heartbreaking song, a thrilling movie, or an impressive painting, we travel the artists’ emotional journey, unbox one character’s bittersweet memories, or smile at the unexpected twists the creator carefully lays out. In this light, AI-generated art is not just unnatural. So, Jerry Saltz, an art critic, has a good question, “Calculated and deterministic, AI art is like a beautifully wrapped box shining with techniques. But do you really expect anything when you open it?”
Throughout history, the most celebrated works of paintings, literature, and music are always about expression, exploration, and engagement with the world. As AI art is detached from all these grounds, maybe the value of human-created art migrates to the very thing that displays who we are. As Glen Keane, a great Disney producer put it, “AI, or a machine, can’t understand the weight of a character’s sigh,” Maybe, he is right.
12. What is the characteristic of the era of “aesthetic inflation”?
A. AI is becoming increasingly creative.
B. The world is flooded with instant artworks.
C. Classical artworks have made a comeback.
D. AI-generated artworks have become spotless.
13. Why are Vincent van Gogh and Beethoven mentioned in paragraph 2?
A To show respect for their creativity.
B. To highlight what’s behind human artworks.
C. To explain why artworks should be preserved.
D. To emphasize the great influence of their masterpieces.
14. What does Jerry Saltz’s question mainly reveal about AI art?
A. It’s lifeless. B. It’s unpredictable.
C. It’s cutting-edge. D. It’s accessible.
15. According to the author, what does the value of human-created art lie in?
A. The unique aesthetic skills. B. The adaptation to AI assistance.
C. The reflection of human nature. D. The exploration of human potential.
Effective Reading Strategies: Unlocking the Power of Words
Reading is not just about interpreting letters; it’s an active process of constructing meaning. ____16____ To fully digest the text, readers require specific strategies, just as a chef needs proper tools to create a masterpiece. Recent studies show students using strategic reading methods improve comprehension by 40% compared to passive readers.
Before diving into a text, skim headings, subheadings and illustrations. This is the essential technique called previewing. ____17____ For instance, when approaching a science article titled The Mystery of Black Holes, previewing images of galaxies and bolded terms like “event horizon” prepares your brain to organize incoming information effectively.
____18____ Highlighting key sentences or adding comments helps solidify understanding. However, avoid over-marking -focus on main ideas and connections between paragraphs. A 2024 survey revealed that students who made selective notes scored 22% higher in memory tests than those who randomly underlined phrases.
Questioning while reading is another powerful tool. Turn subtitles into questions: If a history chapter has a section called “Causes of the Industrial Revolution”, ask yourself “What social factors contributed to this transformation?” ____19____
Finally, combine information through mind mapping. After finishing a text, visually organize concepts using arrows and color codes. ____20____ Neuroscientists confirm that creating mind maps activates both logical and creative brain regions, making recall 35% more efficient according to brain scans.
Accept these strategies, and watch your reading develop from a task to an intellectual adventure.
A. Study shows such diagrams help a lot.
B. However, they consume a great deal of time.
C. Effective readers engage with texts through their notes.
D. Think of it as creating a GPS for moving through the text.
E. This can train readers to think critically, not just absorb facts.
F. Some prefer digital tools while others stick to paper notebooks.
G. Without engagement, text remains a disconnected stream of words.

The heavy rain beat down on the sidewalk as Leo rushed past his favorite café. Near the cafe’s damp brick wall, he noticed Ms. Parks sitting alone — the elderly woman who usually smiled at passersby, despite her worn-out shoes and a single bag holding all her belongings. Her lips looked dry as she quietly watched the rain. A cold rain drop slid down Leo’s neck. “Kindness costs nothing,” his late grandmother’s voice came to his mind.
He stopped. His fingers tightened around his umbrella handle. Turning back, he pushed open the café door. He bought two coffees. Stepping out, he went to Ms. Parks. “Have a cup of coffee. This might help warm you up,” he said, holding out the steaming cup. Ms. Parks’s face brightened as she accepted it. “Thank you! you are so kind,” she replied.
That simple act lit a spark. The next day, Leo prepaid five “suspended coffees” at the café — drinks anyone can get for free. Soon a “Suspended Coffee” sign appeared in the café. Within weeks, the idea spread, and more people followed in his steps.
For a while, things went well. Ms. Parks came by often for a free coffee. But before long, someone whispered, “She’s always taking, never giving.” Leo’s heart sank when Ms. Parks stopped showing up. One evening, he came across her in a bus stop. She looked away shyly when she saw him. “I don’t want to cause trouble,” she said softly, her voice breaking. At that moment, he realized though well-meaning, the “suspended coffee” system wasn’t enough. His good intentions had unintentionally made Ms. Parks feel ashamed.
Determined to address the problem, Leo made some changes. The “Suspended Coffee” sign remained, but new words appeared below, “Bring a gift if you can — a used book, spare gloves, a story, a song, or even a smile to others. This is about sharing, not charity.”
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
Leo’s new rules worked.

A Ancient wisdom works better. B. Virtual scenes make us feel good.

Lost in great artworks, like a heartbreaking song, a thrilling movie, or an impressive painting, we travel the artists’ emotional journey, unbox one character’s bittersweet memories, or smile at the unexpected twists the creator carefully lays out.
A. To show respect for their creativity.
B 13. B 14. A 15. C

根据第一段中“As AI continues its extraordinary rise as a creative force, we’re entering an era of “aesthetic (美学) inflation,” where seemingly perfectly-composed images, poetic articles, and cinematic storytelling have become available to anyone, instantly and at no cost.
根据第二段中“We admire Vincent van Gogh not just for Starry Night but for the confusion, vision, and perseverance that shaped it. We don’t just listen to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony; We are impressed at the fact that it was composed while he was deaf. These stories give their creation depth, reminding us that art is not just about aesthetics or skill.
根据第四段中“So, Jerry Saltz, an art critic, has a good question, “Calculated and deterministic, AI art is like a beautifully wrapped box shining with techniques. But do you really expect anything when you open it?” (所以,艺术评论家Jerry Saltz提出了一个很好的问题,“人工智能艺术就像一个包装精美的盒子,闪烁着技术的光芒。但你打开它的时候,真的期待得到什么吗?”)”即人工智能艺术是经过计算和确定的,就像一个包装精美、闪耀着技巧的盒子。但当你打开它时,你真的期待什么吗?这暗示了人工智能艺术缺乏生命力和深度。因此,Jerry Saltz的问题主要揭示了人工智能艺术的无生命性。故选A。
根据最后一段中“As AI art is detached from all these grounds, maybe the value of human-created art migrates to the very thing that displays who we are. (由于人工智能艺术脱离了所有这些基础,也许人类创造的艺术的价值转移到了展示我们是谁的东西上。)”可知,作者认为人类创作的艺术的价值在于它反映了人性。故选C。

【36题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:他在延续无菜单风格的同时,融入了自己的现代元素。“while (introduce) his own modern touches.”

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
Leo’s new rules worked.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The café, filled with Leo’s kindness, attracted attention.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Leo’s new rules worked. Ms. Parks was among the first to return. With a used book in her hand, she walked into the café with a smile. People who used to take the suspended coffees started bringing small gifts too. A young man donated a pair of warm gloves, and an old lady shared a beautiful song. The café was filled with a sense of community. Ms. Parks no longer felt ashamed but proud to be a part of this sharing circle. Leo was glad to see that his change had turned the “suspended coffee” into a real sharing event.
The café, filled with Leo’s kindness, attracted attention. Media came to report this heartwarming story. More cafes in the city began to follow the model. The “suspended coffee” with the new sharing concept spread like wildfire. People from all walks of life joined in, bringing different kinds of gifts. It wasn’t just about free coffee anymore; it was about building connections and showing kindness. Leo was happy to see that his small act of kindness had grown into a big movement that was making the world a better place.
①返回:return/come back
②捐赠:donate/give away
③传播:spread/disseminate
①高兴的:glad/happy/pleased
