Here are some things that you can buy as gifts for your friends who are birdwatchers.
A window-mounted bird feeder
One way to guarantee a close-up look at the birds in your garden is to bring them all the way to the house. This bird feeder is solidly built with strong suction (吸) cups that you can tie to your windows, giving you a good view of your winged visitors.
A pair of binoculars
Binoculars are a birdwatcher’s best friend! They work like two small telescopes joined together, allowing you to use both eyes to see distant birds as if they were right in front of you. They’re perfect for spotting feathered friends in the wild, whether the birds are high up in the trees or soaring across the sky. When you peer through them, you get a view that makes every little detail of the birds—their colors, beaks, and even the texture of their feathers.
The Robin: A Biography by Stephen Moss
This beautifully illustrated book draws readers into the mysterious world of Britain’s favourite bird, the red robin—a familiar sight in all winter gardens, but as naturalist Stephen Moss demonstrates, one we hardly know. Combining convincing storytelling with biological fact, Moss guides us through a year in the life of the robin, from the moment it hatches from its egg to its all too timely mortality (死亡) — the robin tends to live a mere 13 months, adding to its precious quality.
A reusable thermal bottle
Every good birding expedition needs a bottle of steaming hot tea. A reusable bottle decorated with lifelike drawings of classic British birds combines a natural aesthetic (美感) with practicality. It can keep not only hot drinks but also cold drinks.

Situated in the east of Shaanxi Province, 120 kilometers away from Xi’an, Mount Hua is the highest of China’s five great mountains. And it’s well-known as the most dangerous mountain in China. Having made reservations at a simple hotel on the West Peak ahead of time, my brother and I determined to spend a night in the mountain last week.
We went through the east entrance. Our plan was to climb, on foot and with hands, up to the West Peak, then take the cable car (缆车) down the next day.
We started the climb in the early afternoon. The path consists of many stone steps with rough chain link handrails (扶手) in the narrowest and steepest areas. Physically, it is more like climbing the narrow steps of a skyscraper than trails. The most dangerous 100-metre-long path is called “Plank Road in the Sky”. We had never seen that steep cliff. Most climbers were frightened to tremble. Holding the chains tightly, we didn’t dare to look downward, and had a very difficult time in inching that distance carefully.
Tired but excited, we reached the West Peak before 6 p.m. and rested at the hotel. After dinner, we spent some time talking with our guides, and picked up some interesting local stories. That night we watched the sky become spectacular with thousands of stars. This was the clearest sky that we had seen in our lives. The fresh air at Mount Hua was a treat!
Next my brother and I made sleep a priority. We did happen to wake up a bit before sunrise. At about 5, an incredibly splendid rising sun unfolded before our eyes. That scene, as well as the terrifying climbing, did leave an everlasting impression on us.
4. Where did the writer sleep that night?
A. At a luxury hotel in Xi’an. B. In a small tent under the stars.

C. They had a hard time climbing Mount Hua.
D. They enjoyed themselves having a good rest.
7. How did the author feel about their trip to Mount Hua?
A. Different but relaxing. B. Depressing and tiring.
C. Difficult but impressive. D. Familiar and comfortable.
You may not realize it, but you are doing much more than just studying when you are at school. School is also the place where you learn to get on well with people. But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just don't like one of your classmates?
If you discover that you have problems getting on with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance. Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We cannot change the way that other people do, so it is important to learn to live happily with them.
Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other. Getting to know someone may help you understand why he does things differently. Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad. Tolerance teaches us to keep a temperate and open mind.
You need to remember an old saying, “Treat others how you want to be treated.” If you tolerate something, it does not mean that you have to like it. No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in. Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change.
It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone's life easier. Learn to accept people for their different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference.

Of all the creatures on the planet the narwhal is one of the strangest looking. It’s a whale which has a large protruding tusk coming out of its head; that’s how it got, its nickname, the unicorn of the sea. They live in the Arctic Ocean off the coast of Canada, Russia and East Greenland. However, experts say some populations of narwhal could be extinct by 2025, and it’s all because of noise pollution.
Narwhals rely on echolocation, which they use to find food and navigate their surroundings. The animal produces a sound wave which bounces off an object. They pick this reflected sound up through their lower jaw, and information on features like size and speed passes to their ears. However, increase in human marine activity, as well as climate change, has resulted in the Arctic Ocean becoming noisier, which means it’s more difficult for narwhals to rely on sound. Susanna Blackwell, who studies the effects of underwater noise on marine animals, told the BBC that there is noisier activity in the Arctic Ocean than ever because, as sea ice melts, new navigation routes are opening. And while icebergs breaking and creaking have been part of the ocean soundscape for hundreds of years, man-made noise is much harder for animals to adapt to, particularly as these changes are so sudden.
Research published in Science Advances in 2023 recorded the reactions of narwhals to the simulated (模拟的) noises of oil expeditions made by a patrol vessel (巡逻船). The scientists tagged and tracked the creatures and found that, on hearing these sounds, they ended deep dives and stopped clicking, the echolocation signal they use for finding food underwater. This is the same reaction narwhals have to orcas, who hunt them, meaning human-made noise could trigger the creature’s “threat button”.
So, what can we do? Charlotte Findlay, a postdoctoral fellow at Aarhus University, says “noise is actually quite easy to solve. We need to either turn it off or turn it down.”
12. What can we learn about the narwhal from the first paragraph?
A. It has a large tusk from its jaw. B. It currently faces the risk of dying out.
C. It lives in the southern hemisphere. D. It sounds different from other whales.
13. What does Susanna Blackwell’s study show?
A. Narwhals navigate their surroundings by echolocation.
B. Sea ice melting makes the ocean noisier than ever.
C. Man-made noise has a greater impact on marine animals.
D. Narwhals are not used to icebergs breaking and creaking.
14. What does the research mentioned in paragraph 3 imply?
A. A patrol vessel was applied in the research. B. Orcas are the natural enemy to narwhals.
C. Noises would change the echolocation signal. D. Scientists tagged narwhals under the water.
15. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Survival of Narwhal threatened by man-made noise.
B. Experts predicting the extinction of the narwhal.
C. New research set to solve underwater noise pollution.
D. Narwhal population affected by underwater noise pollution.

Every Saturday, Bibi hung out at her grandma’s laundry and dry-cleaning store while her mother went to work. Bibi loved being with her grandma, but she wanted to do more than just draw and read.
“How about I give you a hand with the chores?” Bibi offered.
“But you are too small. Why don’t you draw for a little while?” Grandma suggested “You’re such a good artist.”
“But I want to help you” Bibi sighed.
Bibi was too short to reach the tall rod that held the fresh clothes in neat alphabetical order. Grandma didn’t want her handling the hot presser or the iron. She could slide the stiff cardboard into the starched (浆洗过的) shirts, but that was about it. “Why don’t you draw a picture of more customers coming in?” Grandma joked. “Maybe that would help!”
Bibi went outside. It was a crisp fall day. The last leaves were starting their lazy drift to the ground. She spotted her neighbour, Stephanie, across the street. Stephanie was painting big letters on the window of the hardware store. “Stephanie! You are going to get in trouble.” Stephanie laughed. “The high-school cheer-leading team is painting windows for our homecoming football game next weekend. Some of the shop owners said we could.”
“Does that paint wash off?” Bibi asked. “Yep. It’s just cornflour, soap, and food coloring,” said Stephanie. Bibi saw other kids from the high school painting designs on window up and down the street. GO, TIGERS said the window of the nail salon in huge letter. HEAR US ROAR! said the window of the coffee shop. “I can help you!” Bibi called to Stephanie, her heart pounding. “I can draw!” “Sorry, Bibs,” Stephanie said. “I’m out of paint, and I have to get home. Thank you, though!”
Bibi was so disappointed. She stared at Grandma’s windows. They were bare.

Of all the creatures on the planet, the narwhal is one of the strangest looking.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. A

And while icebergs breaking and creaking have been part of the ocean soundscape for hundreds of years, man-made noise is much harder for animals to adapt to, particularly as these changes are so sudden.
根据第三段“Research published in Science Advances in 2023 recorded the reactions of narwhals to the simulated (模拟的) noises of oil expeditions made by a patrol vessel (巡逻船).
纵观全文,尤其是第一段中“However, experts say some populations of narwhal could be extinct by 2025, and it’s all because of noise pollution. (然而,专家表示,到2025年,一些独角鲸种群可能会灭绝,这都是因为噪音污染)”可知,文章主要讲述了人为噪音对独角鲸生存的威胁。所以A项“Survival of Narwhal threatened by man-made noise (人造噪音威胁独角鲸的生存)”是本文的最佳标题。故选A项。

六、书面表达
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Why don’t you draw for a little while?” Grandma suggested, “You’re such a good artist.”
“But I want to help you.” Bibi sighed.

【答案】All of a sudden, Bibi hit on a good idea. She went to the mini market on the corner and bought a small box of cornflour and a little package of food coloring. The dish soap was found from under the sink. Mixing the materials together, she stirred them until the mixture was smooth and thick like paint. Everything was ready. Walking up to the windows with the paint, Bibi wrote her message, outlined the words with a washable black marker and filled in the letters with different colors. Then came the fun part. She took extra time drawing a picture.
The moment she was finished, Bibi went inside to get Grandma. A bunch of kids had gathered there when they came back out. “Great job!” said one girl. “Perfect,” said another. Bibi’s grandmother looked up at the window to see what the fuss was about. AFTER THE GAME, BRING YOUR UNIFORMS HERE! the window said. Bibi had drawn a picture of the team’s uniforms jumping into a big tub of foamy water. Grandma clapped her hands and hugged Bibi. “This just might help,” she said. And after the game, it did.
