That night we stopped in a large hotel in the market place of a town. After the squire and his wife had got out, Ginger and I pulled the carriage under an archway and into the long yard with stables and coach houses.
Two ostlers came to help James. The head ostler took off my harness and rubbed the sweat from my coat. James waited with us until we were bedded down in a clean stable with a good corn feed.
Later in the evening, the assistant ostler brought another horse into the stables. While he was grooming it, a man came to talk to him. I didn’t like the man much, and the ostler said. “Do me a favor, Towler. Stop smoking that pipe and get me some hay from the hayloft.”
Dick Towler climbed up into the hayloft and brought down some hay. When the ostler had finished his work, the two men left the stables and I finally fell asleep.
In the middle of the night something woke me. The air was thick and choking and it stung my eyes. I could hardly breathe and I could hear Ginger coughing.
The trapdoor to the hayloft was open and something strange was happening up there. There was a so rushing noise and lots of crackles and snaps. By now the air was thick with smoke. It was very frightening and I knew there was danger.
Suddenly the table door burst open and an ostler ran in carrying a lantern He untied a horse and went to lead it out of the stable but the horse was too scared to move. The ostler tried another horse and when that horse wouldn’t budge, he came to me. I wouldn’t follow him either. Danger was all around mg but I was too terrified to move a step.
Fresh air came rushing through the open stable door and I breathed it thankfully. But with the air, the rushing sound grew fiercer. Through the bars of my empty hay rack I saw a red light flickering on the wall.
“FIRE!”
The cry came from outside and now flames were licking around the trapdoor, I snorted and kicked the door, and just when I was really starting to panic I heard a voice I knew.
“Steady, Beauty, easy does it.” It was James and his gentle voice was music to my ears. Calmly he patted me. Then he put on my bridle, and taking a scarf from around his neck he tied it lightly over my eyes. “Come on, boy,” he said softly
I’ve never been so scared in my life. But I trusted James, and he scarf over my eyes stopped me from panicking because I couldn’t see anything. Slowly I followed James out into the yard. He handed me to someone else, then darted back into the stable.
4. Which trait of James was MOST IMPORTANT in saving the horses?
A. His ambition to become a coachman. B. His calmness and gentle approach.

6. What is the correct chronological order of these events from the fire incident?

3 Crackle sounds began.
4 James comforted Beauty and it followed him out.
A. 2→1→3→4 B. 1→2→4→3 C. 3→1→2→4 D. 4→2→3→1
7. What can be learned from the passage?
A. James covered Beauty’s eyes to prevent panic.
B. Beauty refused to move until other horses escaped.
C. The fire started in the carriage during the journey.
D. Ginger saved James by leading him out of the stable.

THE MOST popular musicians on Spotify this week included plenty of familiar names, from Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars to Billie Eilish. But also riding high in the streaming platform’s charts were some unexpected stars, including Jane Austen, J.R.R. Tolkien and Boris Johnson.
Spotify, best known as a music streamer, now deals in audio of all kinds. A year ago it began giving customers on its paid tier 15 free hours of audiobooks, equivalent to (相当于) about a book and a half, per month. The plan has since been rolled out (推出) in ten mainly English-speaking markets; rock and pop now jostle for position in the charts alongside fantasy and politics.
This month Amazon announced that it would follow Spotify’s lead and give subscribers to its music-streaming service access to audiobooks, with one free book a month from Audible, its sister company. Amazon’s Music Unlimited has little more than a third as many subscribers as Spotify, which boasts 252m worldwide. But in Audible it has by far the dominant player in audiobooks, accounting for more than half the market.
Amazon’s move promises to add fuel to an audiobook boom. Sales so far this year are 27% higher than in the same period in 2023, according to the Association of American Publishers, a trade body, helped by Spotify’s entry into the market. Once something of a footnote in the publishing world, audiobooks now make up 12% of America’s consumer book market, a bigger share than e-books.
Many musicians and record companies, who pine for the days very much, when listeners bought CDs for $15 a pop rather than streaming tracks for a fraction of a cent each. Book publishers are more enthusiastic. Music bosses “would kill for the deal we have”, boasts one, who says a stream on Spotify earns about the same as a physical book sale, once a lowish threshold (很低的门槛) of listening has been reached. Streaming platforms also bring in new readers by pointing them to books related to podcasts they have enjoyed.
The audiobook boom has given a particular boost to certain types of authors. Spotify says its subscribers are using their free hours to try out less “safe” choices—if they are not gripped after a few minutes, they can switch to a different title at no cost. The majority of audiobook users fall within younger age groups and are more likely to be male, which is reflected in the many non-fiction and self-improvement titles in Spotify’s charts. Publishers have long fretted that the digital world is dragging readers away from books. Now, for once, it might be helping.
8. How does the author support the claim about Audible’s market dominance in paragraph 3?
A. By citing statistical data. B. By giving some examples
C. By analysing specific cases. D. By quoting Amazons reports.
9. What does the word “footnote” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Minor component B. Major achievement. C. Core business. D. Technical term.
10. Which group is MOST likely to benefit from Spotify’s audiobook strategy?
A. Music composers cooperating with audiobook platforms.
B. Podcast listeners interested in related books.
C. Newspaper editors adopting digital subscription models.
D. Record companies expanding into online streaming.
11. Which of the following might be the best title of the article?
A. The Decline of Traditional Publishing B. Audiobooks: From Unknown to Mainstream
C. Why Spotify is Killing the Music Industry D. The Rise of Male Audiobook Listeners

Generation Z Reinterprets Historical Figures in Digital Era
The “cyber resurrection” of ancient figures is taking RedNote by storm, where accounts dedicated to historical icons including poets, scholars and emperors, have emerged.
“Li Bai” posts AI-generated street scenes from the Tang Dynasty, “Du Fu” offers a review of the hit movie Ne Zha 2, and “Su Shi” shares recipes for Dongpo pork. This viral trend, driven largely by Gen Z, is reshaping Chinese cultural heritage.
The creators behind these accounts come from different backgrounds. Some of them are even middle school students. They all share a common interest in historical figures and traditional culture. Their creative interpretations promote their intellectual growth and personal development.
Wang Mengqi created an account for Li Bai because she feels that his romantic spirit resonates with modern young people. The 32-year-old blogger draws on historical records and academic research to make Li’s voice more engaging and relevant. This phenomenon, known as “language cosplay,” relies heavily on creative interpretation. “Since it’s social media, we aim to balance fun with respect for historical facts,” Wang said.
Similarly, Qin Piyin, who “language cosplays” as Su Shi, sees the scholar as a “life coach.” The 17-year-old said that when he interacts with netizens, they focus more on Su’s attitude toward life than his art. “Su’s optimistic and easy-going attitude is exactly what we need now,” he noted.
Hu Yu, a professor at Tsinghua University, stated that this trend offers an innovative way to promote traditional Chinese culture. “When these ancient figures are brought to life on social media, they enhance modern people’s connection to tradition,” he said.
Another expert, Guo Zhi’en, echoed this idea. “Engaging with these ‘ancient celebrities’ allows young people not only to learn about history but also to draw inspiration for their own lives,” Guo noted.
While the trend breathes new life into tradition, it also comes with its challenges. Some lawyers have raised red flags over the potential risk of copyright infringement. They have pointed out that modern artistic renditions of ancient figures may be protected, even though their portrait rights are not. Creators should therefore be mindful of copyright law when using such images.
In addition, there are concerns about the quality of the content. As creators come from diverse backgrounds, some posts may lack depth, accuracy and authenticity (真实性).
“Such posts should be created with sincere respect for historical figures,” Professor Hu stressed. “In other words, they should reflect a deep appreciation for history and traditional culture.”
12. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. AI perfectly recreates Tang Dynasty life. B. Youth-led cultural revival goes viral.
C. Historical recipes attract food lovers. D. Ancient poets review modern films.
13. What do content creators of “Cyber Resurrection” have in common?
A. They have professional history backgrounds. B. They excel in AI technical skills.
C. They are middle school students D. They have shared passion for tradition.
14. Why do young creators focus on historical figures?.
A Because ancient romantic literature inspires modern youth
B. Because Al-generated content about history-attracts views.
C. Because historical personalities find modern echoes.
D. Because history education needs innovation.
15. What is NOT mentioned in the experts’ suggestions?
A. Protecting ancient figures’ portrait rights. B. Ensuring historical accuracy of the content.
C. Protecting copyright of artistic adaptations. D. Offering deep insight into Chinese history.

During summer vacation when I was twelve a sawmill (锯木厂) was operating in the woods near our farm. Early each morning, I’d watch the men cut down big trees, saw them into logs and skid the logs to the mil to be cut into lumber.
The logs were dragged by a team of Clydesdale horses (克莱兹代尔马) named Jack and Billy. They were gentle and I petted them every chance I got.
One afternoon when Jack and Billy were pulling a log up to the hill, a stick became wedged (插入) in Jack’s right front hoof (马蹄). After Mr Davis removed the stick, the horse driver said that the foot should be doctored. But Mr Davis said he didn’t have time for that. He said if the horse couldn’t earn its keep (谋生), he’d get one that could.
I felt sick inside. Jack and Billy were my best friends! I couldn’t stop thinking about Jack’s foot and what Mr Davis had said.
The next morning, I rode my bike to Mr Davis’s barn. I fed the horses their grain and filed the feed boxes with fresh hay When I tied a long-rope to their halters (笼头) and led them to the creek for water, I was sad to see that Jack was still limping (跛行).
After I cleaned the stalls (马厩) and led the horses back, I wanted to look at Jack’s hoof. I reached down and grabbed the hair on the back of his leg, as I’d seen Mr. Davis do. Immediately, Jack lifted his foot, letting me get a clear view.
The part inside of the big iron shoe looked red and mushy. When I put the hoof down, Jack let only the front of it rest lightly on the ground.
I knew that Jack couldn’t work with that injured foot, but if he didn’t earn his keep. Mr Davis would get rid of him. I just couldn’t let this happen. But what could I do? I didn’t know anything about medicine and Mr Davis said he wouldn’t pay for a doctor.
As I slowly rode my bike home, my mind raced and I needed to find a way to help my big friend. At my house, I saw our neighbor Mr Sherman who raised horses and knew how to care for them. I told him all about Jack and he said he would take a look at the injured hoof. That made me very happy.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
When we got to the barn, Mr Sherman told me to get a basin of warm water, a brush and animal salve (药膏).

C. His ability to assign tasks quickly D. His physical strength in pulling horses.
5 Which sense is NOT used to describe the fire?

6. What is the correct chronological order of these events from the fire incident?
1 Beauty sensed something dangerous.
2 An ostler attempted to lead out horses.

D. Ginger saved James by leading him out of the stable.
B 5. D 6. C 7. A

C
A 9. A 10. B 11. B

根据第三段“Amazon’s Music Unlimited has little more than a third as many subscribers as Spotify, which boasts 252m worldwide. But in Audible it has by far the dominant player in audiobooks, accounting for more than half the market. (亚马逊的Music Unlimited的订阅用户数量仅略多于Spotify的三分之一,Spotify在全球拥有2.52亿订阅用户。但在Audible,它是目前有声书领域的主导者,占据了一半以上的市场份额)”可知,作者通过引用“三分之一”“2.52亿”“一半以上”等统计数据来支持Audible在市场上的主导地位这一说法。故选A项。
根据第四段“Once something of a footnote in the publishing world, audiobooks now make up 12% of America’s consumer book market, a bigger share than e-books. (曾经在出版界只是一个footnote的有声书,如今在美国消费图书市场中占据了12%的份额,比电子书的份额还要大)”中“Once”和“now”形成对比,结合“a bigger share than e-books”可知,有声书曾经在出版界占比小。由此猜测,footnote的意思是“占比较小的部分”。故选A项。
根据第五段“Streaming platforms also bring in new readers by pointing them to books related to podcasts they have enjoyed. (流媒体平台还通过向用户推荐他们喜欢的播客相关的书籍来吸引新读者)”可知,对相关书籍感兴趣的播客听众很可能会因为流媒体平台的这一推荐而接触到有声书,从而成为新读者。所以这一群体最有可能从Spotify的有声书策略中受益。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Once something of a footnote in the publishing world, audiobooks now make up 12% of America’s consumer book market, a bigger share than e-books. (曾经在出版界只是一个不太起眼的存在的有声书,如今在美国消费图书市场中占据了12%的份额,比电子书的份额还要大)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要围绕有声书从曾经在出版界不被重视、地位较低,到如今市场份额不断扩大,逐渐成为主流的发展历程展开,B选项“有声书:从未知到主流”符合文章内容。故选B项。

B 13. D 14. C 15. A

“not only...but (also)...” 本句中not only后连接的是for his love of calligraphy and paintings, but后连接的是for his deep fascination with jade,这两个部分在句子中都是作原因状语,说明乾隆皇帝闻名的原因。“but also”结构中,also可以根据语境省略。故填but。
故填an。
“Among the numerous jade artifacts...were Hindustani jade vessels...”是一个倒装句,正常语序为“Hindustani jade vessels...were among the numerous jade artifacts”。“caught the emperor’s eye and inspired his poetry”为定语从句,修饰先行词jade artifacts。 故填that/which。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When we got to the barn Mr Sherman told me to get a basin of warm water, a brush and animal salve (药膏). He knelt down beside Jack, gently lifting the injured hoof. He carefully cleaned it with the brush in the warm water, removing dirt and debris. Then, he applied the salve evenly, explaining that this would help reduce the inflammation and promote healing. I watched intently, learning every step. He told me to repeat this process twice a day. I nodded determinedly, ready to do whatever it took to help Jack.
The morning after three - day’s taking care of Jack I jumped on my bike and rode it as fast as I could to the mill to see him. When I reached the barn, I was delighted to find Jack standing normally. His limp was almost gone. I rushed over and hugged his neck. Mr Davis was there, too, looking a bit surprised. “You did a good job, kid,” he said. I beamed with pride. Jack nuzzled me, as if thanking me. From then on, I knew that with determination and a little help, I could make a difference for my animal friends.
