When Chen Guanming was a young man, he never traveled far from his farm in a small village in China. But at this moment he was famous for following the Olympic Games around the world in his three-wheeled rickshaw (人力车). The story began in 2001, when he heard that the games were coming to Beijing. He left his village and cycled 90,000 km all over China, visiting 1,764 cities before finally arriving at the famous Bird’s Nest Stadium.
Then, he decided to travel to London for the 2012 Olympics. In 2010, he packed his things into his rickshaw and began his journey. He slept in his rickshaw and sometimes worked for food and money. Finally, he got to France, and caught a ferry (渡船) to Britain. He only traveled by boat or plane when there was no other choice.
When he arrived in London, he met lots of tourists and told them his story. Some people didn’t believe him. Then he showed them the stamps in his passport, and the photos of himself at places like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur.
After the London Olympics, Chen left his rickshaw in the UK and caught a flight home to plan his next trip—to the Rio Olympics. In 2013, he flew back to London. He put his rickshaw on a ship to Canada, and he took a plane there. A friend paid for his flight ticket. Then, he got on his rickshaw and rode to Brazil through the US, Mexico and Central America. The journey took three years. He had an amazing time in Rio and made lots more friends. “I have seen the world and made many friends,” Chen said in Rio, according to USA Today. “I want to tell the world that the Olympics is about peace.”

For thousands of years, the snow leopard (豹) was the king of the mountains. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), there are now under 7,000 snow leopards living in the wild. Farmers often kill snow leopards because they eat their animals. The WWF is working with these farmers to educate them about these beautiful animals and is offering them money for any animals they lose to the snow leopard. Snow leopards live in cold, snowy mountains and as the climate changes, their natural habitat is disappearing. These unbelievable cats need protecting now
However, for some animals, it seems like it’s almost too late. Northern white thins (犀牛), for example, are very few in number and for years people killed them for their horns (角). The last male, called Sudan, died in March 2018. Now there are only two northern white rhinos left in the world and they are both female. They are a mother and daughter called Najin and Fatu. Unfortunate, they can’t have any baby rhinos. However, scientists may have the answer. In August 2019, a team of scientists collected ten of the northern white rhinos’ eggs to try to save this animal. They kept the eggs at a very low temperature in a frozen zoo. In the future, they are going to use them to try to save the northern white rhino.
Frozen zoos aren’t a new idea. In 1972, San Diego Zoo began the first one and there are now 12 of them around the world. In the UK, the University of Nottingham started a frozen zoo in 2004 and they now have over 700 DNA samples (样本). In 2004, the University of Nottingham also set up the Frozen ArK Project so that all the frozen zoos can share their work. Together they are going to help more than 5,000 kinds of animals!
8. How is the WWF helping farmers protect snow leopards?
A. By moving leopards to new areas.
B. By paying farmers for lost animals.
C. By giving farmers free animal food.
D. By educating leopards not to eat animals.
9 What does the underlined word “habitat” mean in the first paragraph?
A. Food. B. Home. C. Enemy. D. Color.
10. What are scientists doing to save the northern white rhino?
A. Putting them in special care areas. B. Giving them new food and medicine.
C. Sending them to another country. D. Storing eggs in cold for future use.
11. What is the main purpose of the Frozen Ark Project?
A. To share results of studies. B. To collect more rhino horns.
C. To sell frozen animal eggs. D. To build more zoos in the UK.

More and more teenagers are taking risks nowadays. They climb mountains, cross oceans and run marathons (马拉松) in the desert. But why do they take so many risks? Our reporter Jenny Hammond explores.
In 2011, pretty Dutch (荷兰的) schoolgirl Laura Dekker wasn’t shopping for clothes with her girlfriends. She wasn’t going to parties or watching popular reality shows on TV. For all of 2011, she was sailing (航行) around the world on a boat. But it wasn’t a holiday. She wasn’t on a ship with her family. She was sailing around the world ... alone.
When she finished her journey, she became the youngest person to sail alone around the world, with stops. She was 16 years and 123 days old. Two years before her record-breaking trip, Australian Jessica Watson also sailed alone around the world. But she did it without stops. She was a bit older than Laura and her challenge was bigger because she didn’t stop anywhere.
These girls are not unusual. There are many teenagers who are trying to break records. They are young explorers who have great goals and it seems that no challenge can scare them. But why are they in a hurry to do it all now? Why don’t they wait until they are older and have more experience?
One reason is that we have explored everything except the oceans. There isn’t really anything new to do. Many people have climbed Mount Everest or sailed around. The only way to break a record now is to do it at a younger age. But this can be very dangerous when something goes wrong. For example, when you are sailing in a storm and you’re tired, you need experience to stay alive. You don’t have much experience when you are young.
So why do teenagers take risks? “Kids dream more than adults,” said one teenage explorer. Maybe he’s right. What do you think?
12. What did Laura Dekker do in 2011?
A. She shopped with friends. B. She watched reality shows often.
C. She traveled with family. D. She sailed around the world alone.
13. How was Jessica Watson’s journey different from Laura Dekker’s?
A. She completed a trip across the sea. B. She didn’t make any stops.
C. Her journey was less challenging. D. She was younger than Laura.
14. Why do young teenagers try to break records in a hurry?
A. They aren’t afraid of anything. B. They have more experience.
C. Few new challenges remain. D. It’s safer to do it when young.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Teenagers Take Risks B. How to Sail Around the World
C. How to Avoid Sailing Risks D. Why Adults Take Fewer Risks

I live in a small flat but it’s neat and tidy: there’s a place for everything and everything is in its place. ____19____ Another advantage is that if you don’t buy things you don’t need, you can afford to buy good quality, so you have beautiful things that you love instead of rubbish you don’t really like.

A By moving leopards to new areas.
B. By paying farmers for lost animals.

A. Putting them in special care areas. B. Giving them new food and medicine.
C. Sending them to another country. D. Storing eggs in cold for future use.

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

【答案】例文
Dear Alice,
I’m thrilled to hear that you’ll be coming to our school as an exchange student! I’d like to recommend an elective course that I think you’d really enjoy: Chinese Calligraphy.
In this course, we learn how to write beautiful Chinese characters with brushes. It’s not just about the writing; we also explore the cultural meanings behind each character, which I find really fascinating. You’ll get to practice writing different styles and even create your own calligraphy works. I think it’s a great way to immerse yourself in Chinese culture and improve your handwriting too!
I hope you’ll consider taking this course. It’s a lot of fun, and I’m sure you’ll learn a lot from it.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Best wishes,
Zhang Hua
