Every year on the second Sunday of May, people in many countries celebrate Mother’s Day. This special day is dedicated to honoring and expressing gratitude to mothers for their love, care, and sacrifices.
The idea of Mother’s Day can be traced back to ancient Greece, where people celebrated a festival in honor of Rhea, the mother of many gods and goddesses. However, the modern Mother’s Day was established in the early 20th century. In 1908, Anna Jarvis, a woman from the United States, organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration in Grafton, West Virginia. She wanted to honor her own mother, who had passed away, and to promote the idea of a day to celebrate all mothers. In1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day is celebrated in different ways around the world. In the United States and Canada, children often give their mothers flowers, cards, and other gifts. Many families also go out for a special meal together. In the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day is called Mothering Sunday. It is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is usually in March or April. Traditionally, children would give their mothers a simnel cake, a type of fruit cake. In Mexico, Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 10th every year. It is a very important day, and many families have big parties with music and dancing.
Mother’s Day is not just about giving gifts. It is a time to show appreciation for everything that mothers do. Mothers play a crucial role in the family, providing love, support, and guidance. They are often the ones who take care of the household and look after the children. Mother’s Day is a reminder to thank them for their hard work and dedication. It is also a day to spend quality time with mothers, to let them know how much they are loved and appreciated.
1. According to the passage, what is the original purpose of Mother’s Day?
A. To give mothers a day off from household chores.
B. To honor mothers for their love, care, and sacrifices.
C. To promote the idea of family unity.

2. What is mentioned about the difference of the celebration of Mother’s Day between countries?
A. The purpose to celebrate the day. B. The date to celebrate Mother’s day.
C. The significance to celebrate Mother’s Day. D. The evolution to celebrate the Mother’s Day.
3. What can be inferred about the role of mothers from the passage?
A. Mothers are buried merely in managing the housework.
B. Mothers are in charge of all the household issues.
C. Mothers play a significant role in making a living.
D. Mothers are often the family caregivers and providers of emotional support.

Chocolates save us from many things, especially emotional distress. They comfort us in times of trouble, calming down a racing heart by channelling happy calories inside us. We all have faith in chocolates to delight us in an instant!
Recently, chocolate lovers were heartbroken as scientists claimed that they can become extinct by 2050! But hey, we have some happy news for you. Scientists can still help save chocolates from dying out! If you are not aware as to why scientists made the statement about the death of this wonderful thing, let us tell you the facts. Chocolate trees, whose seeds are used to make chocolate, grow in the tropical plant world and require very specific weather conditions to prosper.
Now, fifty percent of the world’s cocoa beans come from two countries in West Africa, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. Scientists believe that both of these countries will experience a 3.8℃ temperature increase by 2050 due to global warming, endangering the cacao farms in the rainforests. These farms will then have to be shifted to cooler mountainous areas, which are the natural habitat of wildlife. This will lead to some tough decisions: whether to grow chocolate or save wildlife.
Unfortunately, the crisis of global warming has already had a serious negative impact on cacao farms’ harvest, leading to the prices of chocolates skyrocketing.
Scientists, however, are trying to find a long-term and eco-friendly solution to this problem! They are modifying the species with gene-editing technology, transforming the seedlings into a species that survives even in drier and warmer climates.
According to a report by The Business Insider, in the University of California’s new bio-sciences building, tiny green cacao seedlings are lined up in refrigerated greenhouses for a new experiment using CRISPR technology. By controlling plant DNA, this technology is already being used worldwide to make plants tougher and cheaper. In this experiment, scientists will make precise changes to the seedlings’ DNA to help cocoa crops survive in warmer and drier climates.

B. They could calm people down a bit in times of crisis.
C. They could prevent people from getting heartbroken.
D. They could become unavailable in less than 30 years.
9. What would happen if the cacao farms were shifted to cooler mountainous areas?
A. The rainforests would shrink dramatically.
B. The quality of cocoa beans would suffer greatly.
C. The natural habitat of wildlife there would be ruined.
D. The cacao farmers would have a tough time adapting.
10. What do we learn about the cacao farms in the crisis of global warming?
A. They try to seek help from gene-editing scientists.
B. They decide to move to cooler mountainous areas.
C. They have suffered a lot due to a decrease in produce.
D. They have benefited by raising prices of cocoa beans.

Dolphins don’t have hands, but studying their “handedness” reveals an odd feature of human perception. Humans and many animals show lateralization (偏侧优势) , preferring one side over the other in various activities. This is linked to asymmetrical (不对称的) brain function, with different tasks processed in different hemispheres. For example, language is usually processed in the left hemisphere, while spatial information is processed in the right.
When studying lateralization in animals, researchers look at behaviors like which hand monkeys use to grab objects or which pa w dogs use to knock food out of containers. But what about dolphins? They don’t have hands or paws. Instead, researchers look at other types of asymmetries, such as sensory biases (which eye they use for different tasks) and turning biases (which direction they prefer to turn).
Turns can be tricky to study because different animals move in different ways. For example, humans turn around a vertical axis, while dolphins can turn in three-dimensional space. This led to confusion when researchers tried to determine whether a dolphin was turning “right” or “left.” They realized that humans interpret the direction of spinning differently based on the animal’s orientation (定向). To solve this, they developed the Right-Fingered Spin (RiFS) and Left-Fingered Spin (LeFS) coding system, inspired by the “right-hand rule” in physics. This system allows researchers to accurately code turning behaviors regardless of the animal’s orientation.
Using this system, researchers studied 26 dolphins and found that, contrary to previous claims, dolphins do not have a general rightward asymmetry. This shows that scientific progress can come from realizing problems in our methods and finding new ways to look at things.
12. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain why dolphins are right-handed.
B. To introduce the concept of lateralization in animals.
C. To describe the challenges of studying lateralization in dolphins.
D. To discuss the development of a new coding system for studying animal behavior.
13. Why did researchers develop the RiFS/LeFS coding system?
A. To prove that dolphins are right-handed.
B. To replace the “right-hand rule” in physics.
C To show that dolphins have no lateralization.
D. To accurately code turning behaviors in different animals
14. What can be inferred about previous studies on dolphin lateralization?
A. They were completely accurate.
B. They used a consistent coding system.
C. They may have been misled by inaccurate interpretations.
D. They focused only on sensory biases.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Mystery of Dolphin Handedness. B. Human Perception’s Unusual Features.
C. Understanding Animal Lateralization. D. The Right-Fingered Spin System.
C 13. D 14. C 15. A

Why an Early Start Is the ‘Quintessence of Life’
Research published in the journal Emotion shows that early risers enjoy a more positive mood and better emotional regulation than those who wake up late. The benefits of getting up early are clear. ____16____. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
This morning started last night.
Early rising is really the second part of two habits: ____17____. This probably seems like the easier habit to keep, but for many people it isn’t. For many young adults, the problem is what psychologists call “revenge bedtime procrastination” (报复性熬夜). Or they simply find it hard to turn off their mental machine. For this issue, a consistent bedtime routine and reducing screen time-can help to earlier sleep.
____18____.
One reason people struggle to rise early is because they aren’t required to do so. When there is no penalty for oversleeping, it is all too easy to hit the snooze button and continue sleeping. Setting a fixed morning commitment, like a workout or an early class, increases the “cost” of staying in bed. Even a trivial task immediately after the alarm can discourage further sleep, gradually transforming a habitual night owl into an early riser.
Make early rising divine (神圣的).
Many religions use the time before dawn for prayer and worship (崇拜), believing the quiet morning brings peace and clear thoughts. ____19____. By rising early, you welcome a new day full of energy and hope. This practice not only helps us start the day with a positive spirit but also prepares us to face challenges with calm and strength.
For the early risers among us, this means a before dawn routine will start to become a true part of your life by the end of January; for the late sleepers, it could take until sometime in September. It felt pretty bad to leave our warm bed when it was still dark. ____20____.
A. Raise the cost of not getting up
B. Lower the difficulty of getting up
C. The first part is going to bed early enough that you get sufficient (足够的) sleep.
D. Even those who do not believe can enjoy these special hours.
E. But it was worth it: the early morning time is now the best time of a day.
F. Quality sleep depends on avoiding late-night snacks and exercise.
G. But what do you need to do to succeed in your resolution and develop this habit?
G 17. C 18. A 19. D 20. E
上文“The benefits of getting up early are clear.(早起的好处是显而易见的)”提到早起的好处是显而易见的,结合下文“Here are a few things to keep in mind(以下是一些需要记住的事情)”可知,空处需过渡到具体行动建议,G项“但是你需要做些什么来成功实现你的决心并养成这个习惯呢?”
上文“Early rising is really the second part of two habits(早起其实是两种习惯的第二部分)”强调早起是两种习惯中的第二部分,空处需补充第一部分(早睡),C项“第一部分是早睡,保证充足的睡眠”直接点明“早睡”是前提,与下文“For many young adults, the problem is what psychologists call ‘revenge bedtime procrastination’ (报复性熬夜).(对于许多年轻人来说,这个问题就是心理学家所说的‘报复性睡前拖延症’)”提到的“报复性熬夜”问题呼应,故选C。
下文“One reason people struggle to rise early is because they aren’t required to do so. When there is no penalty for oversleeping, it is all too easy to hit the snooze button and continue sleeping. Setting a fixed morning commitment, like a workout or an early class, increases the “cost” of staying in bed.(人们难以早起的一个原因是他们没有被要求这样做。当睡过头没有惩罚时,就很容易按下贪睡按钮继续睡觉。设定一个固定的早晨承诺,比如锻炼或早班,会增加待在床上的‘成本’)”可知,本段的核心是通过增加赖床的“成本”促使人早起(如设定晨间任务),A项“提高不起床的成本”精准概括这一策略,与下文“设定固定晨间任务”内容一致,故选A。
【19题详解】
上文“Many religions use the time before dawn for prayer and worship (崇拜), believing the quiet morning brings peace and clear thoughts.(许多宗教利用黎明前的时间进行祈祷和崇拜,相信安静的早晨会带来平静和清晰的思想)”提到宗教利用清晨祈祷,下文需衔接“非信徒也能享受清晨时光”,D项“即使那些不相信的人也可以享受这些特殊的时间”中的“Even those who do not believe”自然过渡到普适性价值,故选D。

故填were caught。
故填that。
“Doubao’s”是名词所有格,后面接名词,“ability to do sth.”
故填an。

The more you trust and believe in angels, the more they will pour their blessings upon you.
It was our first day to explore the city of Moscow on our own, without a friend or tour guide leading the way. My husband and I had completed a week-long tour and felt confident that we could wander through the streets by ourselves now. We had enjoyed a full day of exploration when suddenly the sky turned from clear blue to gray. “It’s time to head back!” I said.
As we went on along the road to our hotel, Kvart, the storm clouds covered the entire sky, and the first raindrops began to hit our heads.
“Should we grab a taxi?” I yelled, the rain being so loud that I had to raise my voice.
“No, we can make it,” my husband boomed back. “It’s only a twenty-minute walk.”
As the rain and wind increased, so did our footsteps. The streets had turned into roaring rivers that quickly soaked our shoes. Suddenly, the biggest eruption of thunder I had ever experienced sounded directly above us! I thought my heart truly stopped for- that moment.
We hurried forward, but it wasn’t long before we realized that we had been walking much longer than it should have taken us to reach our hotel. Where on earth did we take the wrong turn? We had not bought international phone cards, so we couldn’t call for help, and the streets were empty.
Suddenly we noticed some lights on at a gas station. Great, at least we could ask someone there for help! As we approached it, two men were refueling their Chevrolet car. We asked them how to get to Kvart. They didn’t reply but managed a friendly no d and smile. We went on to explain the situation with the few awkward Russian phrases we had just learned. They listened intently, but it was obvious that they were becoming increasingly confused. We had to try our luck back on the street, praying deep down, “Please, send angels to lead us back.”

Then a familiar Chevrolet car pulled up beside us. It was the same car we had seen earlier at the gas station. The driver rolled down the window and waved at us with the other man beside him, saying a few words in Russian. Although we didn’t understand the language, we quickly resorted to gestures, wanting to grasp the last straw. Suddenly, my husband got an idea. He rummaged through the bag, pulled out the hotel card and pointed frantically to it with the repeated word “Kvart”, hoping they would understand. Thankfully, the driver nodded and the other man typed Kvart into his phone map and and showed us, as if asking us for confirmation. Seeing this, we nodded desperately and gave thumbs-up signs.
Finally they understood what we meant. And more fortunately, they offered to escort us back to the hotel. The driver started the engine and the other man beside him occasionally glanced at us with a reassuring smile. We felt safe and secure, though the streets were still deserted and the rain was relentless. After what seemed like an eternity, we arrived and the rain began to let up. The driver parked the car and opened the door for us. We thanked them profusely, but they just smiled and left. We walked into the hotel, feeling exhausted but grateful. Angels had led us back to safety, and we knew that it was because we had trusted and believed in them.

D. To celebrate the achievements of mothers in society.
B Mothers are in charge of all the household issues.

8. What was scientists’ recent statement about chocolates?
A. They could become a rare treat in the near future.
B. They could calm people down a bit in times of crisis.
C They could prevent people from getting heartbroken.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. A CRISPR experiment to enhance cocoa crops’ climate tolerance.
B. The history of CRISPR technology and its role in global agriculture.
C. The impact of climate change on traditional cocoa farming methods.
D. How refrigerated greenhouses are used to store cacao seedlings worldwide.

C. To show that dolphins have no lateralization.
C Understanding Animal Lateralization. D. The Right-Fingered Spin System.

F Quality sleep depends on avoiding late-night snacks and exercise.
G. But what do you need to do to succeed in your resolution and develop this habit?

Then a familiar Chevrolet-car pulled up besides us...
