“During the first nine, second nine, keep your hands covered; the third nine, fourth nine, walk on ice; the fifth nine, sixth nine, look at willows along the river...”
Known as shujiu, or “counting (数) the nine,” the folk song (民歌) was very important to people in ancient China. After the winter solstice (冬至)—usually around 22nd December—the weather becomes very cold. Ancient Chinese people divided (分开) the eighty-one days starting from the winter solstice into nine “Nine-day periods (一段时间)”. The third and fourth were probably the coldest. When the ninth nine ended, farmers were ready to work in the fields.
Counting the nine was useful to farmers; it also provided activities (活动) for fun. The “Nine Times Nine to Dispel the Cold” pictures appeared during the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368) and became prevalent soon. People could buy them from many shops.
These pictures were made in three kinds: plum blossoms (梅花), Chinese text, and circles.
The earliest kind was a drawing of nine plum blossoms, each with nine petals (花瓣). Every day, one of these 81 petals would be painted red. As time passed, the flowers in the picture would slowly bloom. The text version carried the Chinese characters “tingqian chiliu zhenzhong dai chunfeng”. Each of them had nine strokes (笔画). A more difficult one had 81 circles. Each circle was coloured according to the weather that day, such as yellow for windy and red for sunny.
The “Nine Times Nine to Dispel the Cold” pictures brought colour and warmth on cold winter days and parents used them to teach kids to write, draw, and count.

Fighting Food Waste
The Chinese people have developed the habit of ordering more dishes than they can eat when inviting friends or relatives for dinner in a restaurant. If all the plates are empty at the end of the dinner, it would be considered a matter of shame for the host.
Surveys show that, on average (平均), 93 grams of food is wasted by each person having dinner in a restaurant. This is about 12% of the food they order. For parties, the leftovers (剩饭) can be as high as 38% of the total dishes ordered. According to China Daily, as much as 35 million tons of grain (粮食) — that’s 6% of the total grain output in China — is wasted every year. Therefore, people came up with different ways to fight food waste.
In 2013, the “Clean Your Plate” activity was started in China. Restaurant owners, food associations (食品协会), the public and different levels of governments all liked this activity. There are small papers on more and more restaurant tables. They tell diners to order only the food they can eat. And more waiters and waitresses will tell customers not to order more if they think the customers have ordered enough.
Moreover, the awareness (意识) of reducing food waste is also increasing among customers. During the eight-day Spring Festival holiday in 2024, which is usually full of big meals, Liu Han, a 24-year-old in Beijing, tried not to waste food in many holiday get-togethers. Liu went out to eat with friends four times during the holiday. He planned each meal carefully to avoid food waste. He used restaurant review apps to find group-buying deals. He looked at the dishes on nearby tables to know the size of the dishes. He also asked the staff to make sure he didn’t order too much. Liu said, “People sometimes have big eyes but a small stomach.”
All in all, what people do nowadays shows a great change from past years, because “saving face” often led to too much ordering. Food waste is a big problem. Every grain counts. If people all save food, we can make our world a better place.
18.What was considered a shame for the host in the past when having dinner in a restaurant?
A.Ordering too many dishes.
B.Not inviting enough friends.
C.Having all the plates empty at the end of the dinner.
19.How does Paragraph 2 show the fact of food waste?
A.By telling a story. B.By comparing facts. C.By listing numbers.
20.What does “People sometimes have big eyes but a small stomach” mean?
A.People are always very hungry.
B.People seem very hungry but can’t eat much.

In November 2024, a sign language learning app named ArtfulSign won first prize in a competition in Hangzhou.
The app was developed by three university students with hearing problems: Zhao Yuan, Wang Yueran, and Tan Chenglong. It helps common people learn sign language, making them able to communicate with those who have hearing problems.
ArtfulSign uses AI models in sign language teaching. Each sign language word is shown through real-person video examples. After learning, users can open the camera, and the app will check and assess (评估) their sign language gestures. AI-powered machine learning helps learners know right away if they are performing correctly, which makes learning more fun.
Among the three, 25-year-old Zhao Yuan is the leader. She also works on building and training the AI model, which is the most difficult part of the work. To help the AI recognize sign language signs better, they need to train it with nearly 1,000 videos for each sign language gesture. However, because there aren’t enough videos to use, they have to film them themselves. So far, the ArtfulSign team has made thousands of sign language videos.
Zhao Yuan and the other two have spent six months developing ArtfulSign and are still working to improve it. They plan to put the app on the Apple App Store soon. We hope that one day ArtfulSign will be widely used, so that both people with hearing problems and common people can use sign language, she said.

You may feel that math is difficult and boring. Is it possible that you’ve been looking at math in the wrong way? Li Xing, a math professor at Ning Xia University, thinks math can be beautiful and fun. I completely agree with what he said.Numbers are beautiful!
There is math hidden in beautiful human bodies. Measure (测量) the length from your head to your belly button and from your belly button to your feet. The ratio (比例) of these two numbers is always around 0. 618. This is the golden ratio, which can be seen everywhere, like in nature, music and paintings.

Hard water has higher amounts of Ca2+ and Mg2+, so it’s more difficult to get things clean when you are washing in hard water. We are sharing two ways to check whether you are using hard water at home.
Method 1:Soap Test
Step 1: Choose a clear instead of covered bottle so that you can notice the changes during the test.
Step 2: Fill half of the bottle with water.
Step 3: Add 10 drops of liquid (液体) soap to the bottle.
Step 4: Cap the bottle and shake it for a few seconds.
Step 5: Open the bottle and check the bubbles (泡沫) at the top of the water.
This method will only give you an idea of whether the water you are using is hard or soft. You won’t be able to know the exact degree of hardness of the water. But the fewer the bubbles you can see, the harder the water is.
Method 2:Hard Water Test Strips (试纸)
Dip the strip into the water sample for 2 seconds and take it out right away.
Hold the strip for 30 seconds.
Compare the test strip color with the color chart on the bottle label.
Although the result is not as dependable as the lab test, the color chart can tell you the water hardness based on the color.
If you now know that the water that you are using is hard, you should consider taking action to change hard water into soft one. The most chosen way is to fix a hard water softener. You can check out the list of our best-selling water softeners for bathrooms and washing machines by clicking here.
41.Why is a clear instead of covered bottle needed in the soap test?
A.Because you can see what happens in the bottle during the test.
B.Because a covered bottle may have lots of Ca2+ and Mg2+.
C.Because a clear bottle may show more bubbles.
42.How does the number of bubbles change with water hardness in the soap test?
(x=the bubbles, y=how hard the water is)
A. B. C.
43.What should you do if you find the water you are using is hard according to the text?
A.Boil the water before using it. B.Fix a hard water softener. C.Use soap to soften the water.
44.Where may the text be from?
A.A book about science tests. B.A study about hard water. C.A website for selling water softeners.
【答案】41.A 42.B 43.B 44.C
【导语】本文介绍了硬水的特点,并分享了在家检测硬水的两种方法。

This year is the Year of the Snake. You might think snakes are scary. But in Chinese history, snakes have been a symbol of high status (), rebirth and a deep connection between human beings and gods.
People have found that in the Erlitou Culture, snake images often showed up on beautiful artifacts (文物). An amazing discovery at the Erlitou Site in Henan is a long, snake-like animal made of over 2, 000 turquoise (绿松石) pieces. Experts believe it could be a snake. Such turquoise pieces were usually funerary objects (随葬品) of people of high status.
Starting from the Shang Dynasty, people believed the universe (宇宙) had three parts: gods in heaven (天堂), human beings on Earth, and the underworld beings in the place of the dead. When people saw snakes digging into the underground, they believed that these animals could connect people on the earth, the dead and the gods. Images of people with snake bodies were then created, showing the ability to cross between life and death.
Because of their ability to shed skin (蜕皮), snakes were also connected with rebirth. “In ancient people’s eyes, the snakes seemed to have died, but then they shed their skin and came back to life. This showed the idea of revival (复活) after death,” said Han Ding, an associate professor at Henan University.
Living on Earth for more than 100 million years, the snake has never been away from Chinese people’s culture and life. “They served as connection between the earth and the heaven, and finally became a zodiac symbol (生肖) for the common folk,” said Wang Fang from the Jinsha Site Museum in Chengdu.
63.Why did ancient people believe snakes could connect people on Earth, the dead, and the gods?
A.Because snakes were often seen flying in the sky.
B.Because snakes were believed to live in all three parts of the universe.
C.Because snakes were considered the rulers of the universe.
D.Because snakes could dig into the ground.
64.What can we know about the snake’s role in Chinese zodiac culture?
A.It was always seen as a negative (消极的) symbol.
B.It was only important during the Shang Dynasty.
C.It was removed from the zodiac because of its scary appearance.
D.It became a zodiac symbol because of its connection between the heaven and the earth.
65.What is the main idea of the article?
A.Snakes are dangerous animals that should be avoided.
B.Snakes have played an important role in Chinese culture.
C.The Erlitou Culture was the only period in which snakes were important.
D.Snakes are the most powerful animals in the Chinese zodiac.

Have you ever imagined that a cat could be used as a unit of measurement (测量)? Well, at China’s Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, the stray cats (流浪猫) have become a bridge connecting modern visitors with history.
The museum is home to nearly 200 stray cats, some of which are believed to be the descendants (后代) of royal pets from ancient times. These cats are now stars of the museum, serving as inspirations for cultural and creative product designs.
Recently, one cat named Papa has taken on an unusual new role — as a unit of measurement for national treasures. In a creative move celebrating its 100th anniversary (周年), the Palace Museum uploaded (发布) a post measuring a series of national treasures in “Papa units.”
After careful measurement, the museum staff found that Papa’s sitting height is around 30 cm. For example, a famous gold cup is 0.42 Papas tall (12.5 cm), while a jade dragon is 0.85 Papas tall.
This fun method helps people, especially younger visitors, connect with history more easily. Instead of using complex terms, the museum uses humor to make artifacts closer to daily life. Experts say such creativity bridges the gap between old traditions and modern audiences.
Other museums in China are also finding fresh ways to share culture. The National Museum turned a Ming Dynasty crown into a fridge magnet (磁铁), and the Sanxingdui Museum made its bronze masks (青铜面具) “dance” in funny videos. These efforts aim to make history more lively and fascinating.
As the Palace Museum celebrates its 100th anniversary, it shows how small, creative steps — like measuring treasures with a cat — can make the history personal and fun. By doing so, these national treasures continue to “live on” for future generations.

On April 19th, Beijing hosted the world’s first half-marathon where robots and human participants ran together. Twenty robot teams from Chinese universities, research centers and companies joined the race, connecting modern technology with sports.
Experts said the event served as a basic “physical test” for humanoid (人形) robots. For a standard-sized humanoid robot, completing the 21-kilometer race required about 250,000 precise joint movements. Therefore, this race marked a big step from labs to real-world roads.
There were many memorable moments during the race. One robot named “Tornado Boy” lost its “head” in the final 100 meters, the “Little Giant” ran in a funny way, and some robots kept falling but stood up again and again. Netizens joked that it was just like little kids learning to walk.
Though only 30% of the robots finished, everyone cheered for them. Cheers of “Come on, robots” echoed (回响) throughout the event. The top two robots were both from new companies started in 2023, showing the progress of China’s robotics technology.
The event also attracted global interest, with foreign companies hoping to cooperate. China’s robotics technological exploration not only serves its own development but also provides a platform (平台) for global exchange and learning.
While making steady progress, China’s robotics research still has a long way to go. China’s goal in robotics is to continuously challenge itself, break boundaries (界限), and finally benefit humanity. In this process, Chinese researchers keep working hard, focusing on innovation (创新) and teamwork and trying to make robots better for the world.
This world’s first half-marathon taught us a valuable lesson: on the road of technological innovation, no one can make progress alone — only by working together can we achieve true breakthroughs (突破).
70.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The researchers. B.The human runners. C.The robots. D.The foreign companies.
71.Where can we probably read this passage?
A.In a storybook. B.In a cooking book.
C.In a history textbook. D.In a science magazine.

Are you looking for a good volunteer activity? Get outdoors and go gleaning!
What is gleaning? Well, let’s begin with the problem of food waste on farms. Some farm produce is of good quality but looks imperfect. Farmers don’t usually try to sell this produce. Much of it is left to rot (腐烂) in the fields. This is a great waste. And gleaning is about reducing this waste—by collecting the leftover (剩余的) produce.
These days, many volunteer groups go out gleaning in order to provide those in need with fresh and healthy food. Over the past few years, the number of gleaning volunteer groups has been keeping growing. In 2017, there were five gleaning groups in the UK. Today, there are about 25.
Holly’s group is one of them. Her volunteers collect about 300 boxes of food each week. Once, a local fruit farmer called Holly to ask for gleaning services. He had a large field with more than 700 fruit trees. A member of Holly’s group created digital (电子的) map of the trees. With the help of the map, the volunteers quickly collected the leftover fruit from the trees.
Besides this, Holly’s volunteers have also picked potatoes, cabbages and many other vegetables from local farms. The food has been sent to food banks and community kitchens in her area.

Guyu is a special time in China’s farming calendar, coming between April 19 and 21. Its name means “grain rain” because this is when spring rain helps crops (农作物) grow. As the weather gets warmer, the gentle rain makes fields green and trees strong.
Long ago, Chinese farmers knew Guyu was the most important planting time. They would carry rice seedlings (秧苗) to wet fields, singing old songs about rain. “Spring rain is as dear as oil,” people used to say. They believed the gentle rain during Guyu was nature’s gift to ensure a good harvest. Without it, young plants might dry up under the sun.
By the sea, fishermen have their own Guyu traditions. Before sailing out, they light incense and offer fish to the sea gods, praying for safety and full nets. The sound of waves mixes with their prayers, carrying hopes for the fishing season.
When the rain stops for a while, families climb misty mountains to pick tea leaves. Drinking Guyu tea is said to cool the body on warm days. Children laugh as they run after butterflies among tea fields, their baskets slowly filling with fresh green leaves.
This is also when peonies open their big, soft flowers. Called the queen of flowers, peonies (牡丹) paint hillsides pink, red, and white. Old people smile and say: “Three days after Guyu, come to admire the peonies!”

In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers. As Li Bai wrote,
“My skiff (小船) has left ten thousand mountains far away”,
“A thousand miles in one day”,
—all these numbers show how fast Li Bai traveled and how happy he felt.Curves (曲线) are beautiful!
“Sine curves” are beautiful. They go towards the two opposite directions on and on without ever ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching the waves slowly moving. Tangent curve is like a waterfall, just as Li Bai wrote, “dashing (猛冲) down three thousand feet from on high”Formulas (公式) are beautiful!
There are some amazing formulas. In a right-angled triangle (直角三角形), the square of the longest side is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. How amazing! Just as Chinese-American mathematician Shiing Shen Chern said, Math is fun!
27.What does the writer think about math?
A.He thinks math is difficult and boring. B.He thinks math is beautiful and fun
C.He thinks math is only useful for scientists. D.He thinks math is not important.
28.If the ratio of a thing is around 0.618, ________.
A.it has a golden color B.it only happens in human bodies
C.it looks like a human body D.it might bring people a sense of beauty
29.Why does the writer mention Li Bai and his poems in the passage?
A.To introduce the topic. B.To support his opinion.
C.To share the beauty of Li Bai’s poems. D.To offer advice on learning math.
30.What does a “tangent curve” look like?
A. B. C. D.
31.What amazing formula is mentioned in the passage about right-angled triangles?
A. B. C. D.

66.What does the underlined word “inspirations” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Copies. B.Fears. C.Ideas. D.Tools.
67.How tall is the famous gold cup in “Papa units”?

Gleaning helps solve the problems of farm waste and food shortage. And gleaners also find the work very meaningful. They can do something useful for the world. They feel joyful whenever they go gleaning.

①Is the summer vacation long enough to turn life for the better? Every person has his own talents and interests. Find something you care about, and you will see the difference.
②Organize a clean-up program. People often throw litter in the place where there is already litter. This leaves the community in a mess. The environment will become better if someone volunteers to help. You could pick up the rubbish with your friends once a week in your neighborhood. You could also help take care of the plants every few days. Surely, a clean and tidy neighborhood will be worth the work.
③Show your love to the old. Our city has some old people’s homes. Without children around them, the old people there might feel lonely once in a while. Maybe they need your help. In fact, you can do a lot for them. For example, you can talk with them or play games with them. Listening to them carefully is also a good idea. Some old people can’t see clearly and they would like you to read to them. No matter what small things you do, you can make them feel loved.
④Set up a reading project with your friends. Share your favorite books with them. Besides, you may read aloud to each other and talk about what you read.
