Passage 1
Thousands of years ago, texts appeared on animal bones and bamboo before they were written on
paper. Now ancient Chinese texts have a“new container(容器)”in the modern age.Recently,a
research team from Nanjing Agricultural University together with Gulian,a leading ancient Chinese text
publisher, introduced a large language model called Xunzi.
“Traditional Chinese characters and no punctuation marks(标点符号)are always making reading
traditional texts hard,"said Wang Dongbo, who led the research, explaining why they made the large
language model.
To create this model,Wang and his partners did a lot of research on Chinese classic like Siku
Quanshu or the Complete Library in Four Sections."We had to work on two billion Chinese characters and
our work gave us a good start, said Wang.
However,it is no easy job.Wang said they need to learn these classics first and then mark the
characters into different groups, like nouns(),which are put into the model.
But their effort seems to be paying off. Now,the model can help users understand and explain
ancient Chinese texts. For example, when users type "shangu"into the chat box, they may not only get
the information that "shangu"means "valley"but also learn that it could be a person's courtesy name
(in ancient Chinese texts.
1.What is the large language model called?
2.Why is reading the ancient texts always hard?
3.How many Chinese characters did Wang and his partners have to work on to create the model?
4.How is creating the large language model?
5.What do you think of the model? Why?
Passage 2
According to recent numbers shared by the government, more than 19%of students in England were
not able to attend school in the first term of 2024-2025 mainly due to illnesses. When children are unable
to attend school, the separation from the classroom and friends can have a bad influence on them.
Norwegian company No Isolation has created the AVI robot, designed to help long-term sick children

attend their classes remotely()through a 360-degree camera,microphone,and speaker,allowing
students to interact()with their teachers and classmates from home by controlling the robot remotely
through an app."They can move their fingers to change where the robot is looking, explains Florence
Salisbury, the marketing director of the company."They can also choose emojis that appear in the robot's
eyes, and show their emotions in real time,as if they are attending school in person."
The main advantage of the robot is not just about learning, but rather social.Long-term sickness
takes away the interaction of children with their friends and classmates. Therefore, the role of AVI is to
maintain these important connections.Salisbury shared an example of a 15-year-old boy in England who
uses AV1.His friends even take the robot with them to lunch so that he can still feel included in their
talks."The robot is loved by students and makes a real difference,"Salisbury adds."It makes sick
children feel important.
Although the robot also receives praise from both parents and teachers,it is facing some challenges.
Bad Wi-Fi connection is a main challenge,as it affects the robot's performance.Private information leaks
()which may bring trouble to the robot users, are another challenge. However,Salisbury says that
No Isolation is working on these problems.
1.Who is the AVI robot designed to help?
2.How do sick children interact with their teachers and classmates from home?
3.Why do the 15-year-old boy's friends take the robot with them to have lunch?
4.According to the last paragraph, what challenges is the robot facing?
5.Do you want to use AVI if you have a chance? And why?
Passage 3
With the increasing development of technology,it has a big influence on our lives.People from all
over the world can talk to each other almost at once on mobile phones and the Internet now.People can
easily solve their problems with the help of computers and the World Wide Web.With this technology,it
seems that the world is more connected now than ever before.Even so,there have been worries about
technology making people feel lonely and disconnected from others around them.
So does this mean that technology makes us lonely?
In my opinion,it is hard to say Yes or No.It's true that humans need communication with each
other. If we depend on technology too much to communicate, this can be bad for our mental health. For
me,technology is a tool.And just like any other kinds of tool-like scissors,a pencil or a ruler,it
depends on how we use it.Take social media as an example. If you only use it to compare yourself with
others, you might feel sad and lonely. But if you use it as a tool to connect with friends and family or to
start a new community to talk about your hobbies and interests, the loneliness will turn into love and
friendship.

Passage 4
On November 1.4th,2023,the International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO)(国际民用航空组
织)officially recognized(认可)China's Beidou Navigation Satellite(卫星导航)System(BDS)as the
world level. This makes it one of the four major global satellite navigation systems, along with the United
States'GPS,Russia's GLONASS and the European Union's Galileo.
China started to develop the BDS in 1994.The system came into use in 2000.After 12 years of
work,it began serving the Asia-Pacific area.In 2020,with the global use of BDS-3,China has improved
the system to provide users with more correct positioning services, making it a valuable tool for more
industries,including transportation and surveying.
Now,with 59 satellites in its network, the BDS has served more than 1.5 billion users across the
world. Most mobile apps providing maps, navigation and shopping services in China already support the
BDS.
China's satellite navigation industry is growing fast. Its value reached more than 500 billion yuan in
2022.That number is expected to double by 2025.In the first half year of 2023,there were about 13.4
million new BDS devices().Nearly 60%were used in transport systems. The rest were used in
communication and agriculture. The former made up about 28%and the latter 12%.
As BDS gets more popular,it is expected to play an increasingly important role in global navigation
and positioning services.
1.What are other major global satellite navigation systems besides the BDS and the GPS?
2.When did the BDS come into use?

Passage 5
Going up stairs is difficult for people in a wheelchair. But a new invention may change that.A group
of scientist have invented a special wheel:It can change its shape to move over barriers()
The wheel has a sensor(传感器),an outer cirele of chain and a series of wires(金属线).The wires
run through the center of the wheel. When the sensor discovers a barrier,it makes the wires soft. This
allows the wheels to change the shape and turn over the barrier. The wheels can go over a barrier up to 1.
3 times the height of their radius().They can then change back to hard wheels for faster travel on
flat ground.
The team tested the wheels on a wheelchair. They made the wheelchair climb the stairs with a life-
size dummy(真人大小的假人)init. Each step was 18 em tall. The wheelchair easily did that..
On the flat ground, the wheels can run at a speed of up to 30 kilometers per hour. The scientists are
working on making them go even faster.Their goal is to reach about 100 kilometers per hour. That is the
usual speed of cars on the highway.
The team believes that their wheels will be very helpful in the future. With the wheels, the robotic
delivery cars could climb stairs to deliver food and more. The wheels could also be used on two-and four-
legged robots. They would help the robots move better and reach more places. These robots could work in
factories or even dangerous places.
1.What is special about the wheel?
2.When does the sensor make the wires soft?
3.What's scientists'goal?
4.What robots can the wheel be used on according to the text?
5.Where do you think the robots with this wheel could work?(文中例子除外)

Passage 6
Wearing a white blouse,Ai-Da studies her subject(绘画题材)and puts a pencil to paper..She looks
like any artist at work. However, the "beep...beep...beep"noise from her arm gives her away.Ai-Da
is,in fact,a robot.
Ai-Da has been described as the world's "first AI robot artist".She takes her name from Ada
Lovelace, the world's first female computer programmer.Scientists at Oxford University developed Al
systems for Ai-Da.The robot has cameras in her eyeballs. After she has studied a subject, she will use
her left arm to draw.Now,Ai-Da can only use a pencil for sketches().The plan is for her to paint.
Ai-Da is not the first Al system to produce artworks.Since 2006,scientists have been developing
software()to turn photos into drawings. In 2023,an artwork created by Al was sold in New York for
432,500.However,Ai-Da's human-like appearance brings something new to the field.
In June,Ai-Da opened her first exhibition at Oxford. There were about 30 drawings by the robot.
Ai-Da,standing next to her artworks,attracted()many visitors.
Ai-Da's inventor,Aidan Meller, talked about the importance of the robot."Ai-Da brings a new voice
to the art world,"he said."Al is going to be the big thing of the 2020s.That makes us worried."Meller
hopes the exhibition was just the start and that more will follow to show how Al is influencing human life.
1.Who is Ada Lovelace?
2.What painting tool can Ai-Da use?
3.When did scientists start to develop software to turn photos into drawings?
4.

Passage 7
A team from Shenzhen Bao'an High School has invented a medicine box to meet the needs of people
with eye problems. So far,the medicine box has won many national prizes.
According to the school,12 students took part in the development and design of the box. From the
market research, box design,to app development, the project was completed by the students with the help
of their teacher,Zheng Naihao.
The idea of the medicine box came from a field visit. In September 2021,Zheng and his students
visited a massage()shop near the school during their lunch break. Some workers there were blind
people. After the visit, the students began to pay attention to the lives of the blind. They found blind

people could only tell different medicines by touch.Sometimes it could be difficult to tell the differences
between those small pills().Then they decided to try designing a product to help cut down the risk
of taking wrong medicines for these people.
Developing a perfect product was not easy. The team had come up with many ideas, including
medicine cups. Some students even thought of using Al,but the idea didn't work because of too many
difficulties.Later, the team held discussions for nearly three months and finally decided to develop a
medicine box using speech recognition(语音识别)technology,
To solve different problems in the development process, the team members used their free time to
study on the box. After more than half a year of learning and improvement, the team created the first
medicine box.Now the students are working hard to improve the product and bring it to market as soon as
possible.
1.Who is the medicine box designed for?
2.Where did the idea of the medicine box come from?
3.Why did the idea of using Al fail?

Passage 1
Do you have sleeping problems? Is it hard for you to remember or pay attention in class?Do you
easily get angry? If your answer is yes,you may be under stress.Stress is a normal physical response(
)to things that make people feel worried. In China,70 percent of the 2,000 students about to take the
college or senior high school entrance examination are under high stress, according to a recent survey by
Wuhan University.
Sometimes stress is good for people. It pushes people to do their best, like getting ready before a big
competition or exam. However, too much or long-term stress makes people feel a stress overload(
多),and affects people's health.
When you feel stressed, there are some ways you can deal with it.Learning to solve small problems
in everyday life is helpful. It can help build confidence to move on to life's bigger ones.Try saying
positive things to yourself, like"I will do the best that I can."or"I can manage this if I take one step at
