It’s always a good idea to make time to catch up with family and friends and share family vacations, birthdays, and graduations together. If you are meeting another family with small children, Legoland California is a good choice. Last summer, I celebrated my daughter’s birthday there. You can begin your vacation to Legoland by flying into San Diego International Airport. The park is about a 50-minute drive from the airport. We chose the Legoland Castle Hotel because it is one of the newest hotels connected to the park. You can get into the park at least 30 minutes before it opens to the public. The hotel includes a full hot breakfast with your stay. Visitors can also choose a themed room that best fits the family: Knights & Dragons, Royal Princess or Magic Wizard. We tried the last one. We had lots of happy memories of our stay in there. So I hope you are inspired to start planning a joint vacation with your family or friends to deepen your connections!

When I was a boy there were no smart phones, computers were something you saw on STAR TREK, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playgrounds whose adventures were only limited by my imagination. I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake and slowly walking around it. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old, one lane, dirt road that I had never seen before. I immediately set out to travel it. It was full of muddy tire tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for what seemed like hours. I am sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear to turn around and head back home but I was stubborn and even a bit stupid, so I walked on. The dirt road gave way to a gravel one and then a paved one, yet there was still neither a car nor a house in sight. My legs were getting tired. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road in the dark of night, but I was sure it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I continued to walk on with the something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. My heart leapt up! I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. I knew the way home! It was still over a mile away but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner. Then I ended my adventure with a good night’s sleep.
I often thought of that experience recently. Actually, in our life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. They can lead us to our homes here on Earth. They can lead us to our homes in our hearts. May you always walk your path with love. May you always help your fellow travelers along the way. And may your roads always lead you Home again.

Bad news for people who frequently use the emoji(表情符号): It is no longer cool.
In recent weeks, two generations have been debating in videos and comments on Tik Tok over the symbols of millennial(千禧一代) culture that are now considered uncool by Generation z (born after 1996). The symbols include the popular laughing crying emoji that some millennials (born in the 1980s), including me, use hundreds of times a day, or more.
“Face with Tears of Joy”, the official name for the laughing crying emoji, is currently the most-used emoji on Emojitracker, a website that shows real-time emoji use on Twitter.
“What’s wrong with the laughing crying emoji?” one user asked in a Tik Tok comment. Another responded, “It’s so off.” In a different video, a woman says she’s cut back on using it after learning kids don’t.
“I use everything but the laughing crying emoji,” 21-year-old Walid Mohammed told CNN Business. “I stopped using it recently because I saw older people using it, like my mom, my older sisters and just older people in general.”
For many Generation Zers, the emoji has become a popular replacement for conveying laughter. It’s the visual version of the slang phrase “I’m dead” or “I’m dying”, which means something is very funny. Other acceptable choices—the emoji officially called “Loudly Crying Face”, or just writing “lol” (laughing out loud) or “lmao”.
“Tears of Joy was a victim of its own success,” said Gretchen McCulloch, the author of “Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language”. “If you express digital laughter for years and years in the same way, it starts to feel insincere... It gets worn out through continued use,” she said. That’s why Generation Zers may be looking to fresh and novel ways to signal they’re laughing in different ways.
“Older generations tend to use emojis literally while younger people get more creative,” said Jeremy Burge, the chief emoji officer of Emojipedia, an emoji dictionary website. Generation Zers told CNN Business they like to assign their own meanings to emoji, which then spreads to others, often through social media.
28. What is the author’s attitude to the use of the laughing crying emoji?
A. Curious. B. Favourable.
C. Uncaring. D. Impatient.
29. What message does the author try to deliver by giving some examples of Generation Zers?
A. They are fond of using emojis.
B. They use emojis very scientifically.
C. The Loudly Crying Face emoji is very popular.
D. The laughing crying emoji is losing its charm.
30. What can we infer about 21-year old Walid Mohammed?
A. He wants to set himself apart from older people.
B. He is seeking to be perfect.
C. He is unwilling to accept something new.
D. He sticks to his own idea.
31. What’s the problem with “Tears of Joy” according to Gretchen McCulloch?
A. It isn’t funny enough. B. It isn’t creative enough.
C. It has been used too much. D. It hasn’t received much attention.
B 29. D 30. A 31. C
根据第二段中“The symbols include the popular laughing crying emoji that some millennials (born in the 1980s), including me, use hundreds of times a day, or more. (这些符号包括流行的笑哭表情符号,一些千禧一代(80后),包括我,每天使用数百次,甚至更多。)”可知,作者对笑哭表情符号的使用是赞许的。故选B项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“In recent weeks, two generations have been debating in videos and comments on Tik Tok over the symbols of millennial(千禧一代) culture that are now considered uncool by Generation z (born after 1996). (最近几周,两代人在Tik Tok上的视频和评论中就千禧一代文化符号展开了辩论,这些符号现在被z一代(1996年后出生)认为不酷。)”和第四段中“In a different video, a woman says she’s cut back on using it after learning kids don’t.(在另一段视频中,一名女子表示,在得知孩子们不会使用后,她已经减少了使用。)”以及倒数第二段中“That’s why Generation Zers may be looking to fresh and novel ways to signal they’re laughing in different ways. (这就是为什么z一代可能会寻找新的、新颖的方式来以不同的方式表示他们在笑。)”等内容可知,作者通过给出一些z一代的例子试图传达笑哭表情符号正在失去魅力。故选D项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中Walid Mohammed 所说“I use everything but the laughing crying emoji (除了笑哭表情,我什么表情符号都用。)”和“I stopped using it recently because I saw older people using it, like my mom, my older sisters and just older people in general. (我最近不再用它了,因为我看到老年人在用它,比如我妈妈、我姐姐和一般的老年人。)”可知,我们能从21岁的Walid Mohammed身上推断出他想把自己和老年人区分开来。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中Gretchen McCulloch 所说“Tears of Joy was a victim of its own success. (‘快乐的眼泪’是它自身成功的受害者。)”和“If you express digital laughter for years and years in the same way, it starts to feel insincere... It gets worn out through continued use.(如果你年复一年地用同样的方式表达数字笑声,就会让人觉得不真诚……它会因为持续使用而磨损破旧。)”可知,“Tears of Joy”的问题是被使用太频繁了。故选C项。
D
Climate change leads to a threat to the world’s sandy beaches, and as many as half of them could disappear by 2100, a new study has found. Even by 2050 some coastlines could be unrecognizable from what we see today, with 10% to 12% facing severe erosion (侵蚀).
Using updated sea level rise predictions, the researchers analyzed how beaches around the world would be in a future with higher seas and more damaging storms. They also considered natural processes like wave erosion, as well as human factors-like coastal building developments, all of which can affect a beach’s health. The study found that sea level rise is expected to outweigh these other factors, and that the more heat-trapping gases humans put into the atmosphere, the worse the influences on the world’s beaches are likely to be.
It’s hard to overstate just how important the world’s beaches are. They cover more than one third of the world’s coastlines, and protect coastal areas from storms. Beaches are also important economic engines, supporting relaxation, tourism and other activities. And in some areas, the beach is more than a vacation destination. In places like Australia, life near the coast revolves around the beach for much of the year.
Some of the world’s most popular beaches are already taking action. Places like Miami Beach are trucking in thousands of tons of sand to patch up (修复) badly eroded shorelines, while others have built sea walls and breakwaters in an attempt to hold precious sand in place. But the financial and environmental costs of these projects are huge, and scientists say rising seas and more powerful storms, supercharged by a warmer climate, will make this a losing battle.
However, the researchers did find that humans have some control over what happens to the world’s beaches. If the world’s governments are able to stick to modest cuts to heat-trapping gas pollution, the researchers found that 22%of projected beach losses by 2050 could be prevented, a number that grows to 40%by 2100 if greenhouse gases are limited.
32. Which is the biggest contributor to severe beach erosion?
A Damaging storms. B. Wave erosion.
C. Coastal building. D. Sea level rise.
33. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. It is hard to protect coastal beaches.
B. One third of storms take place near beaches.
C. Beaches are of great significance to our lives.
D. Most Australians live on beach tourism.
34. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A. Popularizing the beaches.
B. Holding sand in place.
C. Reducing the project costs.
D. Stopping global warming.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Half beaches could disappear by 2100.
B. Climate change is doing harm to our lives.
C. The beach is more than a vacation destination.
D. Governments are taking action to fight wave erosion.
D 33. C 34. B 35. A
The study found that sea level rise is expected to outweigh these other factors,得知有很多因素会造成沙滩被侵蚀,其中海平面上升是导致沙滩严重侵蚀的最大因素。
It’s hard to overstate just how important the world’s beaches are. They cover more than one third of the world’s coastlines, and protect coastal areas from storms. Beaches are also important economic engines, supporting relaxation, tourism and other activities得知很难夸大世界上的海滩有多重要。
根据第四段while others have built sea walls and breakwaters in an attempt to hold precious sand in place. But the financial and environmental costs of these projects are huge, and scientists say rising seas and more powerful storms, supercharged by a warmer climate, will make this a losing battle. 得知this指代的是Hold sand in place。
Climate change leads to a threat to the world’s sandy beaches, and as many as half of them could disappear by 2100, a new study has found. 故选A。

You can’t always give advice right now. Texts and FaceTime might be immediate, but your advice doesn’t have to be. You can politely explain to someone that you want to give them your full attention when you’re ready. ____38____
You don’t have to fix the problem. People who ask “What should I do?” often want to process a problem themselves. ____39____ A friend’s priorities might not match your own, but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong.
Pay attention to patterns. When you’ve known someone for years, you’re a witness to their patterns and repeated mistakes. Instead of saying, “Ugh, you’ve said this 15, 000 times,” you can ask questions. “What do you think that means?” or “____40____ ” can be a good one when you’re trying to get someone to consider their own cycle.
A. Body language matters.

根据上文“Helping a stranger can be easier than advising someone we’ve known forever. When friends and family ask for advice, it is more complicated. (帮助一个陌生人可能比建议一个我们认识很久的人更容易。当朋友和家人寻求建议时,情况就复杂多了)”可知,上文指出当朋友和家人向你寻求建议时可能情况比较复杂。下文“To give better advice, try less fixing and more listening. (要给出更好的建议,试着少处理,多倾听。)”,此处给出了解决这个问题的建议。F项“If we don’t get it right, we could hurt someone we love. (如果我们做不好,就会伤害到我们爱的人)”,F项承上启下,其中it呼应上文的情况giving advice to friends and family,而someone we love呼应上文friendsand family,同时因为F项提到的不良后果,顺接下文:针对这一问题给出建议。
根据下文“You should stay open if you can. Keep your hands free. Keep your face neutral and try to avoid looks of shock or judgment. If you look like you’re tense or you’re distracted, the person might not open up to you as much as you would want them to. (如果可以的话保持开放的态度。放开你的手。保持面部表情中立,尽量避免露出震惊或评判的表情。如果你看起来很紧张或心不在焉,这个人可能不会像你希望的那样对你敞开心扉。)”可知,本段内容均与身体语言(Body language)相关,故A项“Body language matters. (肢体语言很重要。)”符合语境,为本段的中心句。故选A项。
上文“You can’t always give advice right now. Texts and FaceTime might be immediate, but your advice doesn’t have to be. You can politely explain to someone that you want to give them your full attention when you’re ready. (你不能总是当时给出建议。短信和FaceTime可能是即时的,但你的建议不一定是即时的。你可以礼貌地向某人解释,当你准备好了,你想给他们全部的注意力。)”可知,当被问及建议时,无需马上给出;E项“Otherwise, you can do more harm than good. (否则,你会弊大于利。)”与上文形成对比关系,指出了如果不这样做的后果,上下文衔接连贯顺畅。故选E项。
【39题详解】
上文“People who ask ‘What should I do?’ often want to process a problem themselves. (那些问‘我该怎么办?’的人经常想自己解决问题。)”,下文“A friend’s priorities might not match your own, but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong. (朋友的优先级可能和你的不一样,但这并不意味着他们是错的。)”可知,有时候我们不需要过多干涉他们的选择。G项“You’re giving good advice if you can help them get there on their own. (如果你能帮助他们自己做到这一点,你就给出了很好的建议。)”,与段落大意相符,其中的help them get there on their own与上文中的process a problem themselves及下文中的a friend’s priorities相呼应,G项承上启下。故选G项。
设空处在句中,上句“Instead of saying, ‘Ugh, you’ve said this 15, 000 times, ’ you can ask questions. (不要说‘啊,你已经说了15000次了’,你可以问问题。)”,以及“‘What do you think that means?’ or ‘ 5 ’ can be a good one when you’re trying to get someone to consider their own cycle. (当你试图让别人考虑他们自己的周期时,‘你认为这是什么意思?’或 5 ,是一个很好的问题。)”可知,本空应与上句内容一致,即问问题,设空处应是一个问题,内容应让人去思考自己的经历,D项“What has worked for you before? (以前什么对你有用)”符合文意,故选D项。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A cold, heavy rain poured on the dark street outside a small-town bar. I sat alone inside, having a drink, when my eyes caught a shivering dog lying in a muddy puddle across the road. Half his body was covered with a severe skin infection. Though reluctant to brave the storm, something pushed me to act.
I led him to an alcove (壁凹) next to the bar and bought three cans of dog food from nearby store. A waitress in the bar told me the dog’s name was Shep. She said he was about a year old and that his owner had gone to Germany and left him on the street. He ate all three cans of dog food attentively. I wanted to pet him, but he smelled like death and looked even worse. “Good luck,” I said, then left.
The next day, while driving a truck for my new job, I spotted Shep near the bar. I yelled to him, seeing his tail wagging. At night, when I brought his food, he welcomed me with wild enthusiasm. Now and then, he was so weak from hunger that he fell to the pavement. Other humans had deserted him and mistreated him, but now he had a friend and his appreciation was more than obvious.
Days later, he was gone. Walking down the sidewalk looking for him, I was afraid of what I would find. He was lying on his side in an alley nearby. His tongue hung out in the dirt and only the tip of his tail moved when he saw me.
I sent him to the local veterinarian. “Is this your dog?” the vet asked after checking the pitiful specimen that lay helplessly on his examining table.
“No,” I said, “He doesn’t belong to anyone.”
“He’s got the beginnings of distemper(瘟热).” the vet said sadly. “If he doesn’t have a home, the kindest thing we can do is to end his suffering.”

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After several days, Shep recovered.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I sighed loudly. “He’s got a home,” I said. I paid for the treatment and took Shep home. I gently bathed him, removed the dirt and germs from his body, and applied medicine to his infected skin. Every day, I fed him on time, talked to him softly, and accompanied him through the difficult days of illness. Although I was tired and my wallet was empty, I never regretted my decision. Shep seemed to know my efforts. He would weakly lick my hand, his eyes full of gratitude.
After several days, Shep recovered. His fur became smooth and shiny, and his eyes were full of vitality. He would happily wag his tail and jump around me when I came home from work. We became inseparable partners. I took him for walks in the park, and he would chase butterflies and play in the grass. The waitress in the bar was surprised to see Shep’s change and praised me for my kindness. Shep had brought warmth and joy to my life, and I was glad that I had given him a home. From then on, wherever I went, Shep would follow, and our story became a warm legend in the small town.

A. Damaging storms.
C The beach is more than a vacation destination.
D. Governments are taking action to fight wave erosion.

The next day while driving a truck for my new job, I spotted Shep near the bar.
