One winter night, he used up all his lamp oil. He was sad because he couldn’t study. But then, he woke up at midnight and saw the thick snow reflecting the moonlight outside his house. His first thought was, “Oh, I can use the reflected light to read!” He quickly took out his books and read, even though he was very cold. Both Che Yin and Sun Kang later became successful government officials. Their stories inspired the Chinese idiom “nangying yingxue,” meaning “to read by the light of bagged fireflies or the reflected light of snow.” These stories remind us that nothing is impossible if we are willing to work hard. They tell us that if you have a dream, you should always find a way to make it 15 . Today, their stories still teach us a lot. Sometimes, we face difficulties that seem too big to 16 . A study at a university shows that people are healthier when they eat food made at home. ①__________ Some people think that the kitchen is not a good place for children. They want to keep children safe, and they worry that children will get hurt. But teaching children to cook may make them safer. As they prepare food, they find out what can be dangerous. They find out what they can touch and how to touch it. As they learn to prepare food, they also learn how to keep themselves safe in the kitchen. ②__________ People may say that they are just too busy to teach children to cook. They worry that it will take longer to prepare dinner with children in the kitchen. That leaves less time for other housework and relaxing. At first, it may take a little more time to help children learn to cook. But the more they practise, the better they get. After some time, they may even help cooking go faster! They can start learning to cook by doing easy things. They can wash fruit and vegetables. Then they can start preparing cold dishes, such as salads. Scientists say it will stay around for nearly two months. A moon is an object that moves around a planet. The “second moon”, called 2024 PT5, is a small, rocky planet flying around the Sun. Compared with the Moon, which is 2,159.2 miles across, 2024 PT5 is only 10 metres wide. It is too small and dark to be found with the human eye but can be seen by using professional telescopes (望远镜). NASA (美国航空航天局) first noticed 2024 PT5 on 7 August. Scientists studied how this small planet was travelling on and worked out that it would travel close enough to Earth to get pulled by our planet’s gravity (重力). 2024 PT5 is expected to stay in Earth’s orbit (轨道) until it breaks free on 25 November. After that, it will continue its journey around the Sun. That won’t be the last that we see the mini-moon, though. Researchers say that it will fly past Earth again in January next year, and then in 2055. This isn’t the first time Earth has caught such a small planet in its orbit. Scientists have recorded it several times before. Here’s a look at some interesting studies that might help solve this everyday puzzle (谜题). One idea is that yawning helps us take in more oxygen (氧气); especially when we’re tired. When we yawn, we could refresh our blood with oxygen. However, many scientists are interested in a different thought: cooling the brain. When the brain gets too warm, yawning might act like a natural fan. Opening the mouth wide brings in cool air, and the running of blood during a yawn could help carry heat away from the brain. In a 2007 study, scientists recorded videos of some people yawning with cloths on their eyes. The cloth was either: very warm, very cold or at normal room temperature. The people with warm or normal cloths yawned nine times each, but the people with cold clothes only yawned once. Similarly, a 2014 study found that 42% people yawn in summer while only 18% ones yawn in winter, because hotter weather makes the brain work harder to stay cool. There is also an interesting fact about yawning. Seeing someone else yawn or even reading about yawning can lead to your own yawns. Scientists think this might have to do with our ability to understand and copy others’ feelings, a skill that helps humans connect socially. Next time you yawn, ask yourself: Is your body trying to cool your brain, wake itself up, or just share a sleepy time with others? The answer might surprise you! 根据短文内容完成表格,每空一词。 The 58 for yawning To help us take in more oxygen and cool the brain. The result of yawning It may make the temperature of the brain 59 . But his family was poor and couldn’t afford lamp oil to study at night. One night, he saw many fireflies (萤火虫) outside his house. He had an idea: he caught some fireflies in a cloth bag and hung it up as a lamp. He spent all his summer nights studying like this. Sun Kang, another child from the same period, also loved reading.
