“I guess so,” Greg said. “But you really think that treasure of yours was worth fighting against the bad guys?”
“As a boy, you’re sure to ask such a foolish question. What else can be more valuable than what a man can pass on to his son or daughter?” Lemon said as he put his treasure back in place.

①Gossip is the information passed from one person to another about other people’s lives. You may think gossip is awful. Even dictionary entries suggest that it is often unkind or untrue. And yet this common idea is unreasonable.
②Firstly, a study by Robbins and Karan in 2019 shows that gossip common but much of it is just people sharing information. For their study, 467 people’s conversations were recorded. Robbins and Karan found that, on average, these people gossiped for 52 minutes a day, with three quarters of the time spent communicating non-evaluative (非评价性的) information. Only about 14 percent of the gossip was considered malicious, a much smaller percentage than the common idea suggests, although to be fair, that was double the percentage of positive (积极的) gossip.
③Scientists consider gossip to be an important reason why our ancestors (祖先) were able to stay alive. It helped spread important news, but more importantly, it provided information about who was trustworthy and who might not work well with others in a group. It allowed humans to build small communities with those who could be trusted, ensuring a greater chance of living. Today, it seems that not much has changed. Gossip still allows us to form relationships and find out who we can work with best. Gossip also explains the principles (行为准则) of our society. When we hear someone criticize (批评) a person’s behaviour, it is clear that such behaviour is unacceptable and should not be copied.
④Of course, these days, our world is changing the nature of gossip. Our networks are now larger, and some gossip can spread like wildfire. Our obsession (痴迷) with gossip about well-known people may seem unimportant to some, but it serves to bring people closer. Problems come up when gossip includes untrue information. This kind of gossip can destroy people’s lives.
⑤So scientists say that it’s important to share information that is unlikely to hurt others. If we fail to do this, people will see us as someone who can’t be trusted and may even avoid us. Similarly, gossiping to improve one’s own place in society is unacceptable. It’s best to share information that may act as a warning to others or encourage them to behave better. It’s these things that normally push people together rather than make them turn away from each other.
34. What does the word “malicious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Unimportant. B. Harmful. C. Meaningful. D. Interesting.
35. What can we learn from the passage?
A. We shouldn’t spend too much time gossiping.
B Gossiping to move up in society should be accepted.
C. Gossip helps people build relationships today as well as in the past.
D. In the past, people who liked gossiping were considered untrustworthy.
36. The following sentence would best be placed at the end of ________.
That’s not to say we should pay attention to everything we hear, but it gives us direction.
A. Paragraph 1 B. Paragraph 2 C. Paragraph 3 D. Paragraph 4
37. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To discuss the influence of gossiping.
B. To explain the reason why gossip is common.
C. To remind people of the problems of gossiping.
D. To guide people to be careful when gossiping.

Greg looked at the clippings in surprise. All of them were reviews of shows Lemon had been in when he was young.
“I used to travel around and sing to make money for my family. When my son Jesse grew up to be a soldier. I had nothing to give him except these things that told him who I was, and where he came from.”
“Then what happened?” Greg asked.
“One time I went home and got a letter saying Jesse was killed in the war. The army sent back all the things Jesse used to carry around-those old clippings. That was my treasure, and when I give it to him, he treated it just like that, a treasure. Isn’t that something?”

【答案】例文
Nowadays, with the popularity of Chinese style, many people show great interest in traditional Chinese culture. Among all these wonderful parts of our culture, Chinese calligraphy is my favorite.
Calligraphy is amazing because it uses simple things like a brush, ink, paper, and an inkstone. You can write in different ways. Some styles look wild and free, while others are neat and formal. Every line you draw shows your feelings. When I watch calligraphers write, I feel like they’re dancing with the brush!
I started learning calligraphy in Grade 6. At first, it was so hard! I couldn’t hold the brush right, and my characters looked messy. My teacher said, “Don’t worry. Just practice slowly and watch how the characters are shaped.” Day by day, I found joy in writing. It was like a quiet game where I learned to make lines and shapes look balanced.
Calligraphy isn’t just a hobby for me. It’s like a key to understanding China’s long history. When I copy old poems, I feel like I’m talking to people from the past. Last month, I taught my American friend Lily to write “peace.” She was so excited and said, “This is like drawing stories!” That made me proud to share our culture.
In short, calligraphy is more than ink on paper. It’s a special gift from our ancestors. I hope more people will try it and help this amazing art live on forever!
