Tony Bennett, one of the legends of jazz and popular music, developed a career lasting over half a century.
He was born on August 3,1926, in New York City. His parents were both from poor farming families. Young Tony gave a singing performance at the opening of the Triborough Bridge at 10 years old. He studied music at the New York High School of Industrial Arts but dropped out at the age of 16. To help his family economically, he worked as a singing waiter in Italian restaurants.
In 1950, Bennett signed a contract (合同) with Columbia Records and then made his first big hit Because of You. It sold over a million copies and topped the pop charts in1951. Bennett was able to do five to seven shows a day in New York to crowds of screaming teenagers. In 1956, he continued making recordings and brought two albums, with Chicago and Jeepers Creepers becoming popular songs. His landmark concert at Carnegie Hall in 1962 featured 44 songs. The same year he released I Left My Heart in San Francisco, which remained on the charts for a year and has become his signature song.
Bennett had a change of fortune after 1964, with strong competition from The Beatles and the British Invasion. His singing career took a downturn when his bosses forced him to change his image and style, which pleased no one.
Tough as the life was, his career took off again when he brought back his original style. He made two gold albums in 1992 and 1993, and developed a loyal following. He again extended musical cooperation to live performances with other bands. Bennett also appeared as himself on MTV’s documentary series Unplugged. His successful comeback became big success in the modern-day entertainment industry.

Inside an amazing show center in Beijing, a two-armed robot is busy making sugar paintings. Its smooth movements attract a crowd of visitors. The robot is acting as a “skilled worker” of this traditional art of Beijing. But the machine also acts as both a witness (见证) to and a guide for the increasing mix of fields of knowledge that come from different places. This mix challenges the limits of time and geography.
At the show, hundreds of experts from home and abroad are considering the relationship between cultural heritage and new technologies. For many, the promotion of traditional culture is one of the areas in which technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) can play a key role.
“AI helps pass on culture,” said Guo Chunchao, head of Tencent’s Hunyuan Text to 3D project. Yu Minjing, a teacher at Tianjin University, agreed with him. She led her team to use VR technology to conduct a firework show and make traditional Hanfu clothes. “With AI, the inheritance (传承) of traditional culture can solve the limits of space and geography, which helps traditional skills that used to be taught by talking, to be spread more widely and better,” she said.
“The mix of AI technology with VR, 3D and other technologies has also helped create cloud walking-around experiences, attracting young people to traditional culture,” Guo said.
However, some experts warned that while technology is important for preservation, it’s even more important to think about the people in the process.
Renata Sansone, from Italy, said that some archaeological sites are very difficult for everybody to understand, but the use of technologies may make a difference in getting more people involved and playing their part in protection. Many Chinese experts agree with her. Yu Minjing thinks that saving and passing on cultural relics should focus on people. How much people like and accept it is very important for protecting cultural relics well.
8. Why is the robot mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the challenges the robot faces.
B. To call for people to protect traditional cultures.
C. To praise sugar paintings’ role in cultural protection.
D. To show a new function of technology in traditional culture.
9. What is the main reason for Yu Minjing’s team using AI and VR technologies?
A. Solving space problems in culture sharing.
B. Making new technologies develop well.
C. Attracting more young people to their show.
D. Taking the place of old teaching methods.
10. Which of the following statements would Renata Sansone agree with?
A. Schools will play a key role in cultural protection.
B. Archaeological sites are best explored with technology.
C. It’s important to make the public join in cultural protection.
D. Cloud walking-around has become a major way to experience culture.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The Popular Rise of Robot Artists
B. The Role of Technology in Cultural Protection
C. The Influence of AI on Cultural Exchange
D. The Future Development of Traditional Skills

Elephants, the largest land mammals on the planet, are magnificent creatures and tourists rush to African countries to see them. Due to very successful conservation efforts, the African elephant population in countries like Kenya is growing. In the country’s popular Tsavo National Park, elephant numbers went from around 6,000 to almost 15,000 in 2021.
While this is great news for conservationists, it’s not seen that way by farmers who live in between two parts of the park. The human population has also grown and this means that it affects elephants’ feeding and migration areas, which has led to conflicts (冲突) between humans and elephants, sometimes resulting in elephant deaths.
Now a new solution using honeybees has been found to keep the elephants away from farms. This seemingly unlikely solution is part of a long-running project from the Save the Elephants organization. The sound of Africa honeybees prevents elephants. Now yellow-painted beehive fences (蜂巢围栏) protect some of the local areas. The project is supporting 40 farmers whose crops are protected by 15 hives. Each of the hives is strung on a wire a few meters off the ground. This protects them from insects and allows them to shake if they are disturbed by an elephant. which starts the bees making sounds. This frightens the elephant away.
A nine-year study tracked 26 farms that were protected by the beehive fences in two villages near the park During the high growing seasons — November to January from 2014 to 2020 — 3,027 elephants approached the fences and most were prevented. During the drought of 2017, which reduced the number of bees in the hives by 75%, elephants were still prevented 76% of the time.
Save the Elephants is now promoting beehive fences in 15 countries in Africa and Asia. But besides preventing elephants, the beehive fences can provide other benefits to communities. Bees provide pollination (授粉) services which can increase crop production and honey from the hives that farmers can sell to increase their income.
While this solution isn’t perfect, and is subject to the negative effects of climate change and drought, it does show that elephants and humans can share the land without conflicts.
12. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?
A. The elephants are the biggest creatures on the planet.
B. The protection efforts of elephants in Kenya are useless.
C. The elephant population growth in Kenya mixes happiness with sadness.
D. The increasing migration areas in Kenya have caused many elephants’ deaths.
13. What does the underlined “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The bees making sounds. B. The insects making sounds.
C. The beehives shaking. D. The yellow-painted fence.
14. Why does the author mention the nine-year study in paragraph 4?
A. To stress the importance of protecting elephants.
B. To show the popularity of beehive fences.
C. To prove the effectiveness of the new solution.
D. To show the effect of climate change on the number of bees..
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the solution?
A. Unclear. B. Indifferent. C. Critical. D. Supportive.

Monday started with a mixture of excitement and anxiety for Lucy. Due to her father’s job, she had moved to a new city with her parents, leaving behind her old friends and familiar surroundings.
Today was her first day at her new high school, and she was determined to make a good impression. She woke up early, had breakfast, and double-checked her schedule before heading out. Minutes later, she was sitting on the school bus alone, holding her backpack tightly. The bus ride seemed to take a long time, but finally, she arrived at the school. Lucy took a deep breath and stepped off the bus, determined to make the best of her first day.
In her classroom, she introduced herself to her teacher and found an empty seat. As the bell rang, a girl named Amy hurried into the classroom and sat down beside Lucy, giving her a quick nod. Lucy sensed a hint of annoyance in her voice and felt worried.
The rest of the morning went by smoothly, but Lucy couldn’t shake off (摆脱) her anxiety. During lunch, she found a quiet spot to eat alone, feeling the pressure of being the new girl. After lunch, as Lucy walked through the hallway, she accidentally bumped (撞) into Amy, who was carrying a handful of books. The books went flying, and Amy looked annoyed. Lucy apologized, feeling embarrassed, but Amy’s cold response left her feeling even more out of place.
That afternoon, Lucy headed to her PE class, where she needed to take part in the 800-metre running test. As the run began, she saw Amy trying hard to keep pace with the others.

【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

But the machine also acts as both a witness (见证) to and a guide for the increasing mix of fields of knowledge that come from different places. This mix challenges the limits of time and geography.(机器人是北京这一传统艺术的‘熟练工人’。
根据第三段中“She led her team to use VR technology to conduct a firework show and make traditional Hanfu clothes. ‘With AI, the inheritance (传承) of traditional culture can solve the limits of space and geography, which helps traditional skills that used to be taught by talking, to be spread more widely and better,’ she said.(她带领团队利用VR技术进行了烟花表演,并制作了传统的汉服。‘有了人工智能,传统文化的传承可以解决空间和地理的限制,这有助于过去通过口头教授的传统技能得到更广泛、更好的传播。’她说)”可知,Yu Minjing团队使用人工智能和虚拟现实技术的主要原因是解决文化共享中的空间问题。故选A。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Renata Sansone, from Italy, said that some archaeological sites are very difficult for everybody to understand, but the use of technologies may make a difference in getting more people involved and playing their part in protection.(来自意大利的Renata Sansone说,有些考古遗址很难让每个人都理解,但技术的使用可能会让更多的人参与其中,并在保护中发挥自己的作用)”可知,Renata Sansone认为让公众参与文化保护是很重要的。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段“At the show, hundreds of experts from home and abroad are considering the relationship between cultural heritage and new technologies. D
A The bees making sounds.
C. Critical. D. Supportive.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. D

Monday started with a mixture of excitement and anxiety for Lucy. Due to her father’s job she had moved to a new city with her parents, leaving behind her old friends and familiar surroundings.
However, halfway through the course, Amy tripped over an uneven (不平坦的) piece of ground and fell. Pain shot through her knee.

【答案】One possible version:
Just then Lucy ran towards Amy hurriedly and helped her up. “Are you okay?” Lucy asked, examining Amy’s knee. Afraid to be laughed at, Amy replied, “I’m fine.” Although feeling painful, she still decided to finish the test. Lucy quickly offered to help, steadying Amy as they limped toward the finish line. Worried about Amy’s injury, Lucy then insisted on taking her to the doctor’s. “Thank you,” Amy whispered, grateful for Lucy’s help despite the earlier encounters. “Don’t worry about it,” Lucy said gently and gave her a smile in return. After the doctor provided Amy with some treatment, they left when told that Amy’s knee wasn’t badly injured.
Returning from the doctor’s. Amy apologized to Lucy for her earlier behavior. “I’m really sorry for being rude before,” she admitted. “I’ve also been having a rough Monday.” Lucy felt a wave of understanding and shared her own struggles about not wanting to leave her old friends and familiar teachers. This heartfelt exchange broke the ice between them, and they realized they had more in common than they thought. A friendship began to blossom. That Monday, which had begun with so much anxiety, turned out to be the beginning of a wonderful new chapter for Lucy, filled with friendship and new experiences.
