Tag Questions 反义疑问句 Types of sentences (句子类型)   In terms of communicative purpose, sentences can be categorized into four types: Statements /declarative sentence (陈述句) Questions /interrogative ~ (疑问句) Exclamations (感叹句) Commands /imperative ~ (祈使句) Tag questions, also called question tags, are short questions added at the end of statements. A tag question mostly used in informal spoken English and  turns the statement into a question.  What is tag questions? to confirm information or agreement to start a conversation to soften statements (缓和语气) or add politeness to conversation to want an answer You’re a busy English learner, aren’t you? We should go out for dinner tonight, shouldn’t we? It’s a lovely day, isn’t it? You won’t be late, will you? Why do we use tag questions? 4 -David is your boyfriend, isn't he?  -Oh yes, he's my boyfriend. - David is your boyfriend, is he?   - Well, yes. Who told you? - Oh, everybody knows now. How do we understand the speaker's intent in tag questions? No one was hurt, were they? He can dance well, can’t he? 2. Basic rules (基本规则) A tag question is formed by a verb + subject The subject in the tag matches the subject in the statement. The verb in the tag matches the verb in the statement. If the main verb is be, use be in the tag and if the main verb has a modal, use the modal in the tag. Positive imperative,+ will/won’t you? Let’s…,+ shall we? Let us/ +him/her…,+will you? 4) Imperative Sentences Don’t take the chair out, will you? Open the door, will / won’t you? Imperatives: request, orders won't can, can't, will (less polite) 5) Compound & Complex Sentences Mr. Smith had been to Beijing for several times and he should have been in China now, shouldn't he? He was a lazy child, so he didn't pass the exam, did he? A. Compound sentences principle of proximity (就近原则) a. mostly, agrees with main clause He is not the man who gave us a talk, is he? He said he wanted to visit Japan, didn't he? It is the first time that he has gone there, isn’t it? Though he worked hard, he couldn't perform well in the exam, could he? Rani mightn't have thought that his father would give her such a birthday gift, might she? B. Complex Sentences b. If the subject of the main clause is ‘I',agree with the subordinate clause. I hope that he will win the exam, won’t he? I guess her parents are too old to travel, aren’t they? I have heard that your brother paints very well, doesn’t he? B. Complex Sentences I don't think he is bright, is he / don’t I? I don’t believe she can do it better, can she / don’t I? B. Complex Sentences (否定转移) c. If the main clause includes ‘I think/ believe/ suppose/ expect, imagine …+ that’, tag question matches with clause and the negation transfers. (BrE) You took the car keys last night, didn’t you? Yes, I did. I’m not being intrusive by asking all these questions, am I? No, you’re not.
