The Sanxingdui Ruins
Covering 12 square kilometers, the Sanxingdui Ruins are near Guanghan city, Sichuan province. In 1986, archaeologtists (考古学家) found over 1,700 unusual artifacts, for example, gold masks (面具). In 2019, archaeologists found six more pits (坑) where over 10,000 artifacts (古器) were found. Archaeologists even found silk. It means the Shu people knew how to make silk at that time. These artifacts also show that the Sanxingdui site had a close connection (联系) with central China.
The Grand Canal
The Grand Canal is the longest man-made waterway in the world with a history of over 2,500 years. It goes across 27 cities in eight provincial-level regions (省级地区). Even today, the canal still plays an important role in transport. In 2022, a Chinese government refilled (重新注满) its longest part: the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It helps improve the environment along it.
Longmen Grottoes
National Geographic’s Best of the World list for 2023 listed 25 places around the world. China’s Longmen Grottoes (龙门石窟) is on the list. These amazing grottoes are in Luoyang, Henan province. People started to build them in the late 5th century. It has nine huge Buddha statues (佛像). They show us what art was like during the Tang Dynasty. Longmen Grottoes are home to more than 2,300 caves, over 60 stupas (佛塔) and nearly 110,000 statues. In 2000, UNESCO listed Longmen Grottoes as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Du Fu, one of the greatest poets in China, is popular with most of us. However, Du is largely unknown in the Western world.
The BBC’s one-hour documentary Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet, introduces the great poet to Westerners. As the first English-language documentary about Du, it compares him to Dante and Shakespeare, two of the greatest writers of the West.
In the film, British historian Michael Wood pictures the poet’s life. He visits a number of places, such as the poet’s-birthplace of Gongyi in Henan and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂) in Chengdu. Along the way, he meets and talks to people who tell the fantastic stories of the poet. The film also has talks with researchers and recitals (朗诵) of Du’s works by British actor Sir Ian McKellen. He is known for performing Shakespeare’s works.
The documentary explains why Du’s works have been popular for so long. “Chinese people really treasure the recording of history and Du Fu is better than anyone at showing history in his works.” said Zeng Xiangbo, a teacher at Renmin University.
Du lived under the rule of Tang Xuanzong and he worked for the government But because of the An Lushan Rebellion (安史之乱), he ran away with his family, living a poor life. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his care for his country and people, as well as describing the simple joys of life.
