Writing is a bug, and I caught it very early on in life. When my parents cleared their storage room out recently, they found The Story Book Special I wrote when I was nine years old. I couldn’t believe my imagination was so wild. Reading it reminded me of how special words had been to me at an early age. It’s a feeling that has lasted, through my school years and far, far beyond.
At the age of 18, I joined Kent Police and spent twelve years living every little boy’s dream of driving cars fast and playing cops and robbers for real. It’s safe to say it’s a career I’d still be in now, if not for what happened when I was 28.
I was a fit man when, unexpectedly, I was diagnosed with an incurable heart disease. It’s the disease you hear of when a sportsperson suddenly drops dead on the field of play. But, you know what, it’s one of the best things to have happened to me.
When this happened, I made a to-do list. At the top of it was to write a full-length, “proper” book. I wrote the first draft of my first novel in three months and loved every minute of the process. I knew this was what I wanted to do, more than anything, and getting into publishing can’t be that hard…right? Wrong!
As every author knows, brick walls are everywhere, and when you knock one down, there’s another one. After a few false starts, I coupled with my wonderful agent, Nicky. We spent eight solid months editing and sent the manuscript off. Once again, we received some dressed-up “no’s”, until Rachel, an editor I’d really wanted to work with, read it. Her vision for the book is exactly consistent with mine!
Now my first novel is optioned for television, and is in the hands of a wonderful production team both here in London, and in Australia where it will be filmed.
4. What does the author’s reference to his childhood storybook suggest?
A. He regrets not writing earlier. B. His parents discouraged his writing.
C. Children’s books are easier to publish. D. His early creativity promised his future path.
5. What did his heart disease diagnosis mean to him?
A. A tragic setback. B. A critical turning point.
C. An unfair punishment. D. A minor inconvenience.
6. What does paragraph 5 mainly discuss?
A. The role of the editor Rachel.
B. The author’s collaboration with Nicky.
C. The success of the author’s first novel.
D. The difficulties faced in getting published.
7. What is the central message of the passage?
A. Writing requires natural talent.
B. Childhood dreams often fade with age.
C. Health crises should be avoided at all costs.
D. Persistence and second chances define success.
C
Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are concerned about their own appearance and actions too much. Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?
It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person’s self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.
Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior. They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.
Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-respect. It is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.
8. According to the passage, how do shy people typically behave?
A. They enjoy receiving criticism.
B. They are confident and proactive.
C. They don’t care about others’ opinions.
D. They are worried about their images in people’s eyes.
9. How do shy people usually react to praise and criticism?
A. They criticize others at will.
B. They accept praise with case.
C. They doubt the sincerity of praise.
D. They remain indifferent to criticism.
10. What does the passage suggest is the root cause of shyness?
A. Lack of self-respect. B. Weak characters.
C. Unattractive appearance. D. Low self-awareness.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward overcoming shyness?
A. Shyness cannot be changed.
B. Shyness is too common to pay attention to.
C. Shyness can be reduced by conscious efforts.
D. Avoiding social situations is the best solution.

Bioluminescence the ability of living organisms (生物) to produce light, has long attracted scientists and artists, offering insights into evolution, biology, and even potential applications in technology.
Such phenomenon involves a process where luciferin (荧光素) reacts with oxygen in the presence of luciferase (荧光酶素), thus generating light. The color varies depending on the type of luciferin and the organisms producing it.
Bioluminescence is most commonly associated with the deep sea where animals have evolved to survive. Some creatures glow (发光) to hunt, while others glow to confuse hunters and make a quick escape. It can also be found on land. Fireflies, for instance, flash to communicate with likely partners. Certain fungi give off a soft green light, attracting insects to help with reproduction. These examples highlight the diversity of bioluminescent organisms and their roles in the ecosystem.
Relevant research has led to significant scientific discoveries and applications. In the field of medicine, researchers have used bioluminescence-related genes to develop biomarkers for tracking processes such as protein folding and cell division in real time. Besides, streets lit not by traditional lamps but by genetically-modified (转基因) trees to produce light could save much energy and generate fewer greenhouse gases. The artistic and cultural impact should not be overlooked either. For instance, the glowing creatures in the movie Avatar.
However, bioluminescence is still a delicate and often threatened phenomenon. Human activities, like pollution and habitat loss, are endangering bioluminescent ecosystems. Increasing artificial light makes it harder for fireflies to find partners. Protecting these ecosystems is therefore crucial to preserve the biodiversity and ecological balance they represent.
Research on bioluminescence not only helps us better understand nature, but also promises transformative applications in medicine, technology, and environmental conservation, reminding us of the beauty of life on Earth, as well as our duty to protect it for future generations.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. A proof of potential applications. B. The principle behind the phenomenon.
C. An explanation of the research process. D. The popularity of the scientific research.
13. What ecological role do bioluminescent organisms play?
A. Securing survival in nature. B. Aiding insects with reproduction.
C. Boosting biodiversity of animals. D. Exchanging news with companions.
14. What may be a possible application of the research results?
A. Seek inspiration from visual artists.
B. Mark the process of genetic modification.
C. Track the progress in virtual film-making.
D. Provide an alternative to unsustainable light.
15. Why is it necessary to protect bioluminescent ecosystem?
A. To address pollution and habitat loss. B. To regulate deep-sea mining activities.
C. To stabilize the population size of fireflies. D. To ensure species' variety and sound ecology.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many people have the habit of talking aloud to themselves, a phenomenon known as external self-talk. Unlike inner speech, the silent mental conversations, external self-talk involves voicing thoughts clearly. Researchers have identified specific contexts where this behavior tends to emerge more frequently, prompting inquiries into its psychological mechanisms.____16____
One prominent factor is social disconnection. Individuals who spend extended periods alone often use aloud self-talk as a form of companionship.____17____ For example, children growing up without siblings (兄弟姐妹) tend to engage in more self-talk than those with siblings. This suggests that self-talk serves as a substitute for social interaction when real-life connections are limited.
Another key driver is the need to navigate stressful situations. When faced with uncertainty about actions or emotions people often turn to external self-talk as a coping mechanism ____18____ Studies indicate that individuals increase self-talk when experiencing anxiety. By verbalizing challenges, they can organize their thoughts and process difficult experiences more effectively.
Age also plays a role in the occurrence of external self-talk. ____19____ Young children frequently talk aloud while learning social roles. Conversely, the elderly may exhibit more self-talk, potentially due to memory support needs or reduced self-control. This age-related pattern highlights how self-talk adapts to different life stages and cognitive demands.
Far from being abnormal, external self-talk can be surprisingly beneficial. ____20____ In one experiment, basketball players who verbally coached themselves through moves — using encouraging or instructional phrases — showed significant performance improvements.
A. This behavior is particularly noticeable in those living lone lifestyles.
B. Both children and the elderly display distinct patterns of external self-talk.
C. It can enhance task performance by providing clear guidance or motivation.
D. They assume that this arises from a basic human need for social engagement.
E. However, the exact relationship between self-talk and mental health remains debated.
F. The act of verbalizing thoughts helps individuals clarify uncertainties and manage stress.
G. The link between inner self-talk and age becomes clear when examining developmental stages.

When David signed up for Ms. Sandra’s “Endangered Traditions” class at Willow High, he didn’t expect this class to be about saving history. Ms. Sandra, one of the few remaining masters of su filindeu, a handmade Italian pasta (意大利面), explained in the first class that this skill had been practiced for over 300 years and was the rarest of 350 pasta varieties worldwide. She emphasized, “Fewer than ten people in the world still master this skill. If we don’t act, the art will disappear.”
The students fell silent, realizing the importance of what they were learning. Then, with flour-dusted hands, Ms. Sandra shifted the mood. “Now, let me show you its magic.” The students leaned forward as she started the incredible transformation. She rolled the dough (面团) into a thick rope and then stretched it into 256 perfect strands (线). The classroom was filled with admiration as the teacher’s hands moved gracefully.
For weeks, David and his classmates threw themselves into learning the skill of making su filindeu with Ms. Sandra’s help, but it didn’t come easily. The dough kept breaking or sticking together. Sometimes, they couldn’t stretch more than 16 strands. Still, they refused to quit, helping and encouraging each other as they improved little by little.
One afternoon, Ms. Sandra entered the classroom with heavy steps. She sighed, “The school board thinks our su filindeu class isn’t practical. They’ve decided to cancel it next term unless we can prove its value.” She added, “It’s true that machines can mass-produce pasta in minutes, but if we only value what’s fast and easy, we lose centuries of knowledge.”
A wave of disappointment swept through the classroom. After a moment of silence, David stood up. “What if we let more people know about it? How about an exhibition?” he suggested. The class lit up with excitement. Inspired by their reaction, David immediately volunteered to organize the exhibition. Ms. Sandra watched, proud and hopeful. Perhaps, she thought, they really could work some magic.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
David and his classmates quickly got to work.

Bioluminescence, the ability of living organisms (生物) to produce light, has long attracted scientists and artists, offering insights into evolution, biology, and even potential applications in technology.
Besides, streets lit not by traditional lamps but by genetically-modified (转基因的) trees to produce light could save much energy and generate fewer greenhouse gases.

When faced with uncertainty about actions or emotions, people often turn to external self-talk as a coping mechanism ____18____ Studies indicate that individuals increase self-talk when experiencing anxiety.

【答案】范文:
My Memorable Experience as a Museum Volunteer
Working as a volunteer guide at the local museum has been a uniquely rewarding journey, one connecting history with those who seek to understand it.
My work involves crafting meaningful experiences for visitors, weaving historical facts into engaging stories that highlight their cultural significance. During tours, I also encourage interaction — like guessing the function of ancient tools or sharing personal connections to exhibits. A standout moment was when an elderly visitor tearfully linked a wartime photo to her father’s story, showing how history goes beyond displays to touch our lives.
During the experience, I’ve gained confidence in storytelling, learning to adapt my words to different audiences, but the greatest reward is seeing history awaken in others’ eyes. It’s a reminder that history isn't just in displays; it’s alive in the conversations we share.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
David and his classmates quickly got to work. They spent days practicing the skill, determined to perfect it for the exhibition. David, who was in charge of organizing, contacted local media and invited community members. He knew that if they could show the beauty and history of su filindeu, people would appreciate it. On the day of the exhibition, the students demonstrated the process, explaining its significance. Many visitors were amazed by the skill, realizing that traditions like this should not be lost.
The day after the exhibition, Ms. Sandra entered the classroom with a smile. She announced that the school board had decided to keep the class after seeing the positive response from the exhibition. “You’ve shown everyone the value of preserving traditions,” she said proudly. David and his classmates cheered, feeling a sense of accomplishment. They knew that their hard work had made a difference and that they had played a part in saving a piece of history.
