【原文】A dog’s loyalty is an unbreakable bond, a determined devotion that knows no limits, even in the face of danger. Earlier this month, a family’s dog sprang into action to save one of his owners during a terrible incident in New Hampshire. 86-year-old Ned Tarmey is recovering in the hospital after being attacked by a neighbour outside his Manchester home. Family members credit the family dog for saving his life. Brittney Ardizzoni, Ned’s great-niece, said the man was throwing outdoor furniture, chairs, bricks, and rocks. “When he opened up the door, he got hit by a brick,” Jeff Tarmey, the sufferer’s nephew said. The family dog, Kane, described by family members as “sweet and affectionate”, quickly went into protective mode, catching the man and holding him down until authorities arrived. The attack appears to have been accidental, as Ned and the attacker had never met before the incident. Ned is continuing his recovery in the hospital after being discharged from the ICU. He was reunited with Kane in his hospital bed, telling his loyal dog, “You saved my life!”

By age 14, Dorothy Jean Tillman had obtained an associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree. Despite the impressive achievements, Tillman remembers turning to her mother and saying, “I think I want to pursue a doctorate degree.”
Her mother, Jimalita Tillman, was surprised. Dorothy was a year into launching a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) camp startup, and she was looking for funding for the organization. She was busy. But after Dorothy explained that her mission was to positively impact young people when it came to their mental health, Jimalita understood and lent her support.
Jimalita said she was proud of her daughter. “I knew what it took for her to go through that. She had to sacrifice (牺牲) a lot. She emerged as a leader without fear, showing them how to tackle online schooling.”
From a young age, Dorothy has been outstanding in her academic pursuits. By age 7, she was already doing high school work. At that point, she started to take college level module (模拟) tests and apply the credits toward higher education.
“It was always mentally difficult to handle, especially at such a young age. When you get out of college, you’re thinking, ‘what do I do next?’ Now I am able to sit in the comfortability of being a teenager and being OK with the fact that I don’t have to figure out what comes next,” Dorothy said.
She studied integrated behavioural health at Arizona State University. For her dissertation (论文), she explored the stigma (耻辱) that prevents university students from getting mental health treatment.
In addition to her school work, Dorothy also devotes her time to running the Dorothy Jeanius STEAM Leadership Institute, which inspires hundreds of underserved young people in Chicago, as well as abroad in countries like Ghana and South Africa, to pursue STEAM careers. Everyone loves a holiday! A little time off for some much-needed rest and relaxation can be exactly the thing to refresh. That said, if you’re struggling to think of your next destination then look no further. Don’t waste time debating; let your blood decide.
Everybody has a lineage (血统). Recently, finding out more about our family origins has become popular. By the start of 2019, 26 million people had taken an ancestry DNA test at home, according to a report by MIT Technology Review.
This trend has been noticed by opportunistic travel operators. Some are looking to provide a service that both allows people to trace their heritage — by literally going back to their roots — and travel to the destinations where their ancestors originated from.
Airbnb, an online lodging marketplace, once partnered with 23andMe, a DNA testing and analysis company, to offer recommendations that encourage travellers to walk in the footsteps of their forefathers. And they aren’t the only ones.
The Shelbourne hotel in Dublin has its own “genealogy butler (家谱管家)”. Hellen Kelly offers consultations to help guests trace their Irish line of descent (血统) using official records. This allows them to fill in the blanks of their Irish ancestry.
The Conte Club, a luxury travel company, offers custom journeys based on DNA tests. “These experiences are about exploring deeper into who we really are,” says Conte Club CEO Rebecca Fielding. “It might be the most meaningful trip we can take.”
So next time you think of going on vacation, why not take a DNA test first? Once you know how far your family has come, take the time to holiday back.

A. DNA testing has become more popular.
B. People are more interested in learning about their family traditions.
C. People are more likely to choose a destination based on their personal taste.
D. People prefer to travel to the destinations where their ancestors originated from.
29. What can the experiences help people do according to Rebecca Fielding?
A. Connect with their family members. B. Learn more about their country history.
C. Understand their true identity and roots. D. Explore new places and try new things.
30. What does Rebecca Fielding think of the trip mentioned in the text?
A. Meaningful. B. Expensive. C. Promising. D. Challenging.

In a world where our digital devices have become extensions of ourselves, it’s no surprise that we often immerse (沉浸) ourselves in screens rather than engage with the world and people around us.
But amidst this digital deluge (涌现的事物), something vital is being lost: the art of genuine human connection. These devices offer a convenient escape from boredom or discomfort, allowing us to avoid awkward social situations or difficult emotions.
Small talk often receives criticism for being empty or insignificant. Rarely does someone express a fondness for it, let alone find fulfillment in it. However, small talk matters a lot in social interactions. Think of it as the warm-up before a workout — it helps us ease into deeper conversations and establishes a foundation of trust and understanding. It lays the groundwork for assessing whether the exchange has the potential to cultivate a friendship or deeper connection. Even one-off exchanges with someone at the grocery store or at the bus stop offer opportunities for connection.
But our aversion (厌恶) to small talk is significant. We may convince ourselves that we’re not good at it or that it’s unnecessary, but that’s simply an excuse. Yes, of course, social anxiety is real, but the only way to overcome the fears is through practice, gaining confidence by slowly taking risks, and actively engaging in conversations.
So, how can we embrace small talk and harness its power? Start by paying attention to your surroundings and engaging with those around you. Whether it’s commenting on the weather or striking up a conversation about a shared experience, small talk provides an opportunity to connect with others on a basic level.
Like any skill, small talk requires practice. Start small by initiating conversations with strangers or acquaintances and gradually work your way up to deeper connections. With each interaction, you’ll gain confidence and build the skills necessary for meaningful conversations.
It may feel uncomfortable at first, but with practice, we can regain the richness of human interaction and cultivate relationships that truly nourish(滋养)the soul, build confidence, and reclaim the internal real estate that is overrun with anxious thoughts.
32. Why do people often prefer to engage with digital devices rather than the real world?
A. They find it more convenient to do so. B. They are afraid of genuine relationships.
C. They have little time to engage with others. D. They want to avoid face-to-face communication.
33. What does the author think of small talk?
A. It is an unnecessary and hard skill. B. It takes a lot of meaningful time.
C. It plays a crucial role in social interactions. D. It is difficult to master for most people.
34. What does the underlined word “harness” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Hold. B. Employ. C. Discover. D. Overlook.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How to Overcome Social Anxiety B. The Challenges of Modern Social Life
C. Digital Devices and Human Connection D. The Power of Small Talk in Social Life
【答案】32. A 33. C 34. B 35. D

【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第三段中“However, small talk matters a lot in social interactions. Think of it as the warm-up before a workout — it helps us ease into deeper conversations and establishes a foundation of trust and understanding. 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Once you decide on a tidying method to clean out your home, the real work begins. Almost every popular technique out there requires you to group your things into three or four categories (类别): Keep, throw, donate, and possibly, sell. ____36____, but there’s a trick called the five-second rule that you can use to keep the process efficient.
The five-second rule is a widely-adaptable technique from organisational coach Mel Robbins, who pioneered in her books. ____37____. Your brain will know that at the end of that countdown, it has to make a choice; there’s a sense of urgency to it. This will push you to make quick, efficient decisions.
Adapting the five-second rule for tidying is a big tip that floats around minimalist spaces online. ____38____, but most often, it’s applied to the moments you spend debating internally about whether or not something should be kept or thrown away.
____39____. 【答案】36. F 37. G 38. E 39. C 40. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要阐述了五秒法则整理方法内容和运用。
【36题详解】
根据上句“Almost every popular technique out there requires you to group your things into three or four categories (类别): Keep, throw, donate, and possibly, sell. (几乎每一种流行方法都要求你把你的东西分成三到四类:保留、扔掉、捐赠,可能还有卖掉。)”和下句“but there’s a trick called the five-second rule that you can use to keep the process efficient. (但是有一个技巧叫做五秒规则,你可以用它来保持这个过程的效率。)”可知,空处应表示流行的分类方法的过程效率有可能不高;选项F. Putting each item in its correct pile is not as easy as the step-by-step rules make it seem (把每件物品放到正确的位置并不像按部就班的规则看起来那么容易)表达了这层含义,下句中的“the process”指的是F中的“Putting each item in its correct pile”,两句之间为转折关系,符合语境。故选F。
【37题详解】
根据上句“The five-second rule is a widely-adaptable technique from organisational coach Mel Robbins, who pioneered in her books. (五秒法则是组织教练Mel Robbins在她的书中首创的一种适应性广泛的技巧。)”和下句“Your brain will know that at the end of that countdown, it has to make a choice; (你的大脑会知道,在倒计时结束时,它必须做出选择;)”可知,选项G. According to Robbins, you should make major decisions in under five seconds, actually counting down five, four, three, two, one (根据Robbins的说法,你应该在五秒钟内做出重大决定,实际上是倒数五,四,三,二,一)中的“According to Robbins”承接上句中的“Mel Robbins”,下句中的“that countdown”指的是选项G中提到的“counting down”。故选项G承上启下,语意衔接。故选G。
【38题详解】
根据上句“Adapting the five-second rule for tidying is a big tip that floats around minimalist spaces online. (适应五秒规则来整理是一个在网上极简主义空间中流传的大技巧。)”和下句“but most often, it’s applied to the moments you spend debating internally about whether or not something should be kept or thrown away. (但大多数情况下,它适用于你内心争论某件东西是应该保留还是扔掉的时刻。)”可知,空处应表示你会在什么时候采用这种规则;选项E. You can use it to push yourself to start cleaning if you’re feeling overwhelmed (如果你感到不堪重负,你可以用它来推动自己开始清洁)说明了在你感到不堪重负时,可以采用五秒规则来激励自己开始清洁;同时下句中的it与选项E中的it指代一致,两句之间形成转折关系,语意连贯合理。故选E。
【39题详解】
空处为第四段主题句。根据该段“You can rationalize (合理化) keeping anything if you give yourself long enough to do it, but the goal of tidying is to minimize the amount of things you have and organise the things that’s leftover, not make a bunch of excuses for why you can’t downsize. (如果你给自己足够长的时间,你可以合理地保留任何东西,但整理的目的是尽量减少你拥有的东西的数量,整理剩下的东西,而不是为你为什么不能精简找一堆借口。)”可知,该段主要说明你不应该给自己太长的时间来整理物品;选项C. The less time you give yourself to make the choice, the better off you’ll be (你给自己做选择的时间越少,你就会过得越好)表达了这层含义,总结了该段的主题。故选C。
【40题详解】
根据下半句“you usually know naturally if you really need it. (如果你真的需要它,你通常会自然而然地知道。)”可知,空处应为状语从句;选项B. When you pick something up in the process of tidying (当你在整理的过程中捡起一些东西时)为时间状语从句,下半句中的it与该句中的something相对应,句意衔接合理,符合语境。故选B。

Lily was a bright and energetic girl with a heart full of dreams. She lived in a small and comfort town where everyone knew each other. One sunny morning, Lily’s teacher announced a school talent show. The news excited Lily immediately, as she had always loved singing and dreamed of performing on stage.
Without hesitation, Lily signed up for the show. She chose her favourite song and started practising right away. Every day after school, she would go to the park and sing her heart out, imagining the big stage and the cheering audience. However, as the days passed, Lily faced a big problem. She found it difficult to reach some of the high notes in the song. No matter how hard she tried, her voice just wouldn’t cooperate.
Lily started to feel discouraged. She thought about giving up and withdrawing from the talent show. But deep inside, she knew that giving up was not an option. She remembered the words her father always told her, “When life gives you challenges, face them with courage and never give up.”
Determined to overcome the obstacle, Lily decided to ask for help. She went to her music teacher, Mrs. Brown, and explained her problem. Mrs. Brown was very kind and patient. She listened to Lily sing and then gave her some useful tips on how to control her voice and reach the high notes. She also encouraged Lily to practise regularly and believe in herself.
With Mrs. Brown’s guidance, Lily practised even harder. She spent hours every day working on those difficult notes. Sometimes she felt tired and depressed, but she always reminded herself of her dream. Finally, the day of the talent show arrived. Lily was nervous but excited. As she stepped onto the stage and saw the audience looking at her expectantly, her heart raced. But as soon as the music started, she took a deep breath and began to sing.

【答案】One possible version:
Lily poured her heart and soul into the song. Standing on the stage, her eyes closed, she swung gently with the music. Her voice resounded powerfully and obviously, hitting every note perfectly, especially those high notes that once troubled her. Veins slightly bulged on her neck as she reached for the climax part, and her hands took fast hold on the microphone. The audience sat out of their mind, their eyes fixed on her. When she finished, the whole auditorium erupted into thunderous applause. Lily’s face lit up, and she felt a sense of pride and achievement wash over her, a huge smile spreading across her cheeks.
After the show, Lily’s friends and teachers crowded around her. Her friends, eyes wide with admiration, said, “Lily, that was incredible! Every move was so accurate and full of emotion.” Teachers nodded in agreement, adding, “Your devotion really shone through. The countless hours of practice were evident.” Lily stood there, a shy smile on her face. Glancing around at their supportive faces, she truly understood that through her own hard work, never-giving-up spirit and the encouragement she’d received, she was capable of reaching any goal. This performance wasn’t just an event; it was a life-changing lesson she’d treasure forever.

The programme includes guest speakers and open conversations around each of the five areas of STEAM.

A. She raised fund for her organization. B. She started a STEAM camp startup.
C. She greatly influenced the young. D. She acquired academic success.

26. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Running a startup is challenging. B. Young people favour online schooling.
C. The STEAM education is needed for all people. D. What Dorothy does is really encouraging.
27. Which of the following can best describe Dorothy?
A. Ambitious and determined. B. Brave and noble-minded.

28. What is the trend that has been noticed by opportunistic travel operators?
31. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. An ad in a magazine. B. A review of a bestseller.
C. A column in a newspaper. D. A chapter of a science novel.

____39____. You can rationalize (合理化) keeping anything if you give yourself long enough to do it, but the goal of tidying is to minimize the amount of things you have and organise the things that’s leftover, not make a bunch of excuses for why you can’t downsize. ____40____, you usually know naturally if you really need it. Commit to sorting everything you touch into a keep or get-rid-of pile as soon as you pick it up and in no more than five seconds, employing the countdown if you have to in a tough moment.
A. If you answer those questions with a yes, throw it out
B. When you pick something up in the process of tidying
C. The less time you give yourself to make the choice, the better off you’ll be
D. Asking yourself whether the thing you’re debating keeping could be replaced

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
