You hate me. You don’t even know me and you hate me. Before we’ve even spoken, you hate me. At least that’s how it feels on my end of the call as a female collections officer at a call center.
I dread the moment when I have to log on to our phone system first thing in the morning because I never know who is going to be on the other end of that call.
Sometimes it’s an easy task. The caller is pleasant and has accepted personal responsibility for their debts, and we get through the phone call with ease. Then there are the ones who call in looking for a fight, or looking for someone to blame. Through the luck of the phone system, that person is me.
I’ve had people who shout at me, call me horrible names, accuse me personally of taking their money and threaten me. Why? I think it’s because I am invisible. I think I would be treated with the same level of disrespect if we were face to face. Fortunately for me, I have had years of experience in customer service, so I’m fairly rich in not letting the negative encounters bother me.
The biggest and most effective skill when it comes to the job is empathy (同理心). I can appreciate the situation which the caller is in because I’ve been there. That’s why I’m good at my job — I understand what you’re going through, and I’m here to help.
Some days though, no matter how much I try to leave the stress behind when I hang up the phone, it stays with me. I may do some deep breathing, go for a quick walk or simply stick my head outside for a burst of fresh air. I do this so I don’t carry that negativity on to my next call. That next call may be a person having the worst day of their life, but I don’t want to ever be the one who makes it worse. We are all humans just trying to get by in life, which makes you and me equal. So please, the next time we talk, remember that.
4. What does the underlined word “dread” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Enjoy. B. Fear. C. Expect. D. Avoid.
5. Why does the author think some callers treat her badly?
A. They get angry too easily. B. They blame her for their debts.
C. They do not see her as a real person. D. They accuse her of taking their money.
6. Why does the author think she is good at her job?
A. She can offer callers best advice. B. She is always respected by callers.
C. She can put herself in others’ shoes. D. She isn’t easily influenced by negativity.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text?
A. To call for understanding of her job. B. To explain why she is good at her job.
C. To introduce what she is responsible for. D. To complain about her being treated badly.

No one is sure how the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids near Cairo. But a new study suggests they used a little rock ‘n’ roll. Long-ago builders could have attached wooden poles to the stones and rolled then across the sand, the scientists say.
“Technically, I think what they’re proposing is possible,” physicist Daniel Bonn said.
People have long puzzled over how the Egyptians moved such huge rocks. And there’s no obvious answer. On average each of the two million big stones weighed about as much as a large pickup truck. The Egyptians somehow moved the stone blocks to the pyramid site from about one kilometer away.
The most popular view is that Egyptian workers slid the blocks along smooth paths. Many scientists suspect workers first would have put the blocks on sleds (滑板). Then they would have dragged them along paths. To make the work easier, workers may have lubricated the paths either with wet clay or with the fat from cattle. Bonn has now tested this idea by building small sleds and dragging heavy objects over sand.
Evidence from the sand supports this idea. Researchers found small amounts of fat, as well as a large amount of stone and the remains of paths.
However, physicist Joseph West thinks there might have been a simpler way, who led the new study. West said, “I was inspired while watching a television program showing how sleds might have helped with pyramid construction. I thought, ‘Why don’t they just try rolling the things?’” A square could be turned into a rough sort of wheel by attaching wooden poles to its sides, he realized. That, he notes, should make a block of stone “a lot easier to roll than a square”.
So he tried it.
He and his students tied some poles to each of four sides of a 30-kilogram stone block. That action turned the block into somewhat a wheel. Then they placed the block on the ground.
They wrapped one end of a rope around the block and pulled. The researchers found they could easily roll the block along different kinds of paths. They calculated that rolling the block required about as much force as moving it along a slippery (滑的) path.
West hasn’t tested his idea on larger blocks, but he thinks rolling has clear advantages over sliding. At least, workers wouldn’t have needed to carry cattle fat or water to smooth the paths.
8. How were the stones widely believed to be moved to the pyramid site?
A. They were rolled on roads. B. They were pushed over the sand.
C They were slid on smooth paths. D. They were dragged on some poles.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 7 refer to?
A. Rolling the blocks with poles attached. B. Rolling the blocks on wooden wheels.
C. Rolling poles to move the blocks. D. Rolling the blocks with fat.
10. Why is rolling better than sliding according to West?
A. Because more force is needed for sliding.
B. Because less preparation on path is needed for rolling.
C. Because sliding on smooth road is more dangerous.
D. Because rolling work can be done by fewer cattle.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. An experiment on ways of moving blocks. B. An application of a block-moving method.
C. An argument about moving blocks. D. A new possible way of moving blocks.
D
When we see a person in trouble, the first idea that comes to our mind is to lend a hand. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same rule apply?
This question was raised after a group of penguins (企鹅) were saved from an icy gully (峡谷) in Antarctica. It was filmed for the BBC wildlife series Dynasties. The film crew were anxious when they saw that a group of penguins had fallen into a gully and been trapped with their young. They built a slope (斜坡) so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.
The case has taken the international media by storm. Viewers watching this film sighed in relief. “I’m so glad. I understand not taking action directly, but a helping hand isn’t bothering, right?” viewer Kathryn Shaw said on her Facebook.
However, others think human interference (干涉) is unnatural. “You can’t have sunshine throughout your life. To have done anything else would only make matters worse.” said the show’s creator David Attenborough, according to The Times.
In this case, however, Mike Gunton, the executive producer of the series, said that this was a one-off situation. “There were no animals going to suffer by interfering. You weren’t touching the animals and it was just felt by doing this ... They had the chance not to have to keep slipping down the slope.” he told the BBC.
Such cases are familiar to Paul Nicklen. Wildlife photographer for National Geographic. He told Metro, “If it’s ever a predator (捕食者) situation, no matter how heartbreaking, you stay out of the way. Even when you’re watching a male polar bear eat a baby bear.”
“There’s no rule book in those situations. You can only respond to the facts that are right there in front of you.” Will Lawson, the show’s director, told Daily Mail.
12. What has led to a heated media discussion?
A. Some penguins sufferıngs ın a gully. B. People’s various opinions on penguins.
C. The rescue of penguins from a gully. D. Ways of filming the series Dynasties.
13. What’s David Attenborough’s attitude towards human interference?
A. Supportive. B. Unfavorable. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.
14. According to Paul Nicklen, when should humans NOT interfere with wildlife?
A. When the animal is a race species.
B. When the animal is in a man-made danger.
C. When the animal is trapped in a natural disaster.
D. When the situation involves a predator hunting its food.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Help Animals in Trouble or Not B. Necessity of Lending a Hand to Animals
C. Protect Animals From Dying Out D. Human Interference on Dangerous Animals

I remember the first time I met Roy. He was standing in the center of a group of boys, and he was telling a joke. He was really a popular boy. My name is Daniel. I was the new boy in the class. My father had been offered a job in London, so our whole family moved here. I was twelve and, having lost all my old friends, I felt uneasy and lonely at my now school.
There were 33 students in my new class, and most people weren’t very interested in a shy new boy. Roy was one of the few people who was kind to me. Roy and I became good friends. We relied on each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us.
Five years later, Roy and I are still in the same class. But just under a year ago, Roy’s father was knocked down by a car. He died a few days later. The family had to move to a much smaller house because they couldn’t afford the big house any more. Roy, who had always been very close to his father, changed completely, becoming silent and moody.
Last week our school had a big fair in order to raise money for a charity. It was very successful and by the end of the day, we had made about £500. Our class teacher, Mr. White, came and chatted to a group of us that included Roy, and held up a box for us to see. “There’s £500 in here,” he said with a smile. But to our surprise, the next morning, we were told that the money had been stolen. Mr. White had left the box in the classroom for a few minutes, and when he came back it had disappeared. The head teacher asked anyone who thought they might know something about it to come to him.
This weekend, I went to Roy’s home. Roy was out, and I went upstairs to his bedroom to wait for him. It was a cold day and his jacket was lying on the back of a chair. I put it on and put my hands in the pockets. I could feel a lot of paper notes and I pulled them out.
It looked as if there was about £500 there. I was so surprised that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hands.
At that moment, the door opened, and Roy walked in.

On average, each of the two million big stones weighed about as much as a large pickup truck.
C. They were slid on smooth paths.
C 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据第六段“A square could be turned into a rough sort of wheel by attaching wooden poles to its sides, he realized. That, he notes, should make a block of stone “a lot easier to roll than a square”.(他意识到,只要在正方形的两边绑上木杆,它就可以变成一个粗糙的轮子。他指出,这应该使一块石头“比一个正方形容易滚得多”)”可知,人们是把杆绑在石块上,然后滚动石块。故划线词指的是“用竿子滚石块”。故选A。
根据最后一段“West hasn’t tested his idea on larger blocks, but he thinks rolling has clear advantages over sliding. At least, workers wouldn’t have needed to carry cattle fat or water to smooth the paths.(韦斯特还没有在更大的滑板上测试过他的想法,但他认为滚动比滑动有明显的优势。至少,工人们不需要携带牛油或水来让道路变滑)”可知,根据韦斯特的说法,滚动比滑动更好因为滚动所需的路径准备较少。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“No one is sure how the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids near Cairo. But a new study suggests they used a little rock ‘n’ roll. Long-ago builders could have attached wooden poles to the stones and rolled then across the sand, the scientists say.(没有人知道古埃及人是如何在开罗附近建造金字塔的。但一项新的研究表明,他们使用了一点“摇滚乐”。科学家们说,很久以前,建造者可能会在石头上绑上木杆,然后在沙子上滚动)”可知,文章主要介绍了一种新的把石块移动到金宇塔地址的方法。故选D。

C 13. B 14. D 15. A

5.根据第三段中“But just under a year ago, Roy’s father was knocked down by a car. He died a few days later.(不到一年前,罗伊的父亲被一辆车撞倒,几天后就去世了。)”
6.7.根据第三段中“The family had to move to a much smaller house because they couldn’t afford the big house any more. Roy, who had always been very close to his father, changed completely, becoming silent and moody.(这家人不得不搬到一所小得多的房子里,因为他们再也买不起那所大房子了。一直和父亲关系很好的罗伊彻底改变了,变得沉默寡言,喜怒无常。)”可知,罗伊的家人不得不搬到更便宜的房子,罗伊也变得沉默寡言,所以第六空应用形容词cheaper,作定语,表示“更便宜的”;第七空应用形容词quiet作表语,表示“沉默的”,故第六空填cheaper,第七空填quiet。

9.根据第四段中“But to our surprise, the next morning, we were told that the money had been stolen.(但令我们惊讶的是,第二天早上,我们被告知钱被偷了。)”

I could feel a lot of paper notes and I pulled them out.(天气很冷,他的夹克放在椅背上。 和倒数第二段中“It looked as if there was about £500 there. I was so surprised that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hands.(看起来好像有500人。

根据第三段“But just under a year ago, Roy’s father was knocked down by a car. He died a few days later. The family had to move to a much smaller house because they couldn’t afford the big house any more. Roy, who had always been very close to his father, changed completely, becoming silent and moody.(但就在不到一年前,罗伊的父亲被一辆汽车撞倒了。几天后他就去世了。由于无法再负担那栋大房子的费用,这家人不得不搬进了一所小得多的房子。罗伊一直与父亲关系亲密,但自从父亲去世后,他却完全变了样,变得沉默寡言且情绪低落)”可知,罗伊彻底变了,因为他的父亲被一辆汽车撞倒后不幸身亡,而且他的家庭不得不搬进一个较小的房子。故答案为Roy changed completely because his father was knocked down by a car and died, and his family had to move to a smaller house.
根据倒数第二段“It looked as if there was about £500 there. I was so surprised that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hands.(看上去那里大概有 500 英镑。我太惊讶了,以至于就站在那里,手里紧紧握着那些钞票)”可知,作者发现钱时极为惊讶,他可能会震惊地质问罗伊,直接提及被盗的善款以确认猜测。故答案为The author might feel shocked and confused, and he might say, “Roy, is this the money from the school fair?”

A Lesson in Fairness
The fable “The Fox and The Stork” teaches us the value of fairness and reciprocity. The fox’s trickery backfired when the stork retaliated in kind, highlighting how unfair treatment invites the same in return.
I once experienced this when a friend forgot to return a book I lent him. Instead of getting angry, I kindly reminded him. He apologized and returned it promptly. This showed me that kindness often yields kindness.
