Cha was widely known by his pen name, Jin Yong. He was regarded as one of the greatest wuxia novelists with over 300 million copies in book sales. Born in Haining in 1924, Cha had planned to become a diplomat (外交官). But he began working as a journalist in 1947 to support his studies. Cha said in a speech published in 2005, “It does not matter to me whether I will become a historical figure. There is little doubt that house cats first developed naturally from ancient wild cats. The closest relative is the African wild cat which still lives in Africa today. This is understandable because the first house cats came from Africa.
Cats first started to live around people in Egypt about 6,000~7,000 years ago. From Egypt, cats started to move around the world. This is about the same time that Egyptians began storing grain in buildings. Scientists used to believe that people tamed (驯化) cats to catch mice and protect the grain. However, cats don’t like to be told what to do! Now, Scientists believe that cats followed the mice and learned to accept people. Finally, some of the cats began to grow comfortable around people. These were smaller cats that needed protection. As these cats and people got used to each other, then they moved in together. Around 5,000 years ago, cats started to live with people.
Soon cats were in Greece, then the Middle East and China. They moved along Egyptian business roads keeping away mice and keeping people around them. After the Romans came to Egypt, they also accepted the cats and brought them to Europe. These cats likely bred (繁殖) with other cats to form the many kinds of house cats we have today.
Cats are relatively recent house animals. House cats still have a lot in common with their wild relatives. Cats sleep a lot to save energy just like wild cats. They will often get food at night as well. House cats are generally peaceful and friendly, but be careful! If a cat feels it is in danger, it will fight back—just like a wild cat!

Lily: an animal doctor
Q1: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened in your job?
Probably the dog that bit me. It was’t a big one—I don’t mind the big ones. The small ones are the worst. It gave me a very nasty bite, and I worried about getting sick after being bitten by the dog.
Q2: Have you ever done any other jobs?
Yes, I did different kinds of jobs when I was a student. One summer I did fruit-picking in Spain.
Q3: What’s the worst job you’ve ever done?
In order to improve my English, I worked for a rich family in New York. I never had a day off and I had to do everything—cooking, cleaning, shopping and looking after their children. I left after two weeks and managed to get a job as a waitress in an Italian restaurant.
Andrew: an actor
Q1: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened in your job?
So many bad things have happened but I think my worst moment was when I read my first bad review in the newspaper. They wrote terrible things about me, and I was so upset. After that I didn't read my review any more.
Q2: Have you ever done any other jobs?
Oh yes, it’s not easy to make a living as an actor. So I’ve done lots of part-time jobs over the years. For example, I’ve worked in a shop, sold ice-cream at the beach and handed out publicity flyers in the street.
Q3: What’s the worst job you’ve ever done?
The worst job I’ve ever done was at an egg-packing factory. Working conditions are terrible—you stand for hours at the end of a belt, putting eggs into boxes. You can’t have a break, and if you want to go to the toilet, you have to ask for permission (许可). And worst of all, the smell was terrible—I’ve never eaten an egg since then.
34. What does the underlined word “nasty” mean?
A. Soft. B. Playful. C. Painful. D. Stupid.
35. What kind of jobs did Lily have?

When I was young, my mom used to give the family a funny special treat from time to time —she would make breakfast food for dinner.
I remember she did so one night. She had been at work all day but wanted to do something special for us all.
On that evening, my mom put a plate of eggs, sausages and very burnt toast in front of my dad. I waited to see if anyone noticed. But my dad just took his toast, smiled at my mom and asked me how my day at school had been. I don’t remember what I told him that night. But I do remember watching him put butter and jam on that toast. He ate it up as usual.
After dinner, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the toast. I’ll never forget what he said: “Honey, I love burnt toast.”
Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night. I asked him if he really liked his toast burnt. He wrapped (抱紧) me in his arms and said: “Your mommy worked very hard today. She’s really tired. And besides, a bit of burnt toast never hurts anyone!”
Life is full of imperfect things. Nobody is perfect either. I’m not the best at anything. I forget birthdays and other important events just like everyone else does. But I’ve learned something important from my father. Understanding is the basis of everything, whether between a husband and wife, a parent and child or just between two friends. Remember, burnt toast never hurts anyone. It’s the people with the kind thoughts who make life worth living.
37. What did Mom cook for dinner according to Paragraph 3?
A. Toast. B. Eggs. C. Sausages. D. All of the above.
38. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Butter. B. Jam.
C. The toast with butter and jam. D. An egg.
39. What did the writer’s mother feel for burning the toast?
A. Sorry. B. Relaxed.
C. Surprised. D. Angry.
40. What is the main lesson of the story?
A. A bit of burnt toast never hurts anyone.
B. It is difficult to achieve perfection.
C. We should accept our imperfection.

His novels have been made into films, TV and radio series, and deeply influence the cultural development of Chinese-speaking communities around the world.
Where there are Chinese, there are Jin Yong novel readers. This is unexaggerated praise for Cha, one of the world’s most-read Chinese writers. Many stars at home and abroad, including Andy Lau, Jordan Chan and Indian actor Aamir Khan shared their grief at the news of Cha’s death.
Cha said in a speech published in 2005, “It does not matter to me whether I will become a historical figure. All I want is that after one or two hundred years, there will still be people reading my books.” Cha is gone, but he will always be in our hearts. After all, who would want to put down his novels?
