Minh’s grandma had a pottery (陶器) studio. She could make really beautiful bowls and sell them at a good price. When Grandma invited Minh to her pottery studio, Minh was super excited.
You know, his grandma didn’t invite all of her grandchildren. Minh couldn’t wait to put his hands into the wet clay (黏土) and make his own bowl.
“Be careful with that,” Grandma said as Minh reached for one of the bowls. The boy quickly put the bowl back on the shelf and put his hands in his pockets. He couldn’t wait to start the lesson Grandma had promised him. And he didn’t want to lose this chance by breaking any of her finished pottery.
Five hours passed. Minh was sad and tired. He tried to make a bowl, but it didn’t work. His second try wasn’t much better either. Still, he had found out how to make a smooth opening in the middle of the clay. At the same time, Grandma was busy. There were two different kinds of nice bowls on her worktable. Her skillful hands started to make another bowl. “I’ll never be able to do it!” Minh said while watching her. A new business model in the education industry called “AI self-study rooms” is becoming popular in China.Compared-to traditional self-study rooms, I self-study rooms offer a tablet computer (平板电脑) for each desk. The tablet handles the teaching and exercises for each student.
The tablets use AI (artificial intelligence) to teach and give exercises. Supervisors in the rooms make sure students stay focused, and the quiet setting helps them give all their attention to study. Huang, a manager of an AI self-study room in Beijing, says the tablets can also find where students have problems and create special plans to help them improve. Parents can check their children’s progress with reports from the tablets.
Some people think these study rooms are helpful because they make learning faster and fairer for students from different areas. The tablets are better than regular online courses because they give students questions that match their abilities. Others believe these rooms are too expensive or not truly powered by AI.
Huang shares that it costs 3,000 yuan per month to use an AI self-study room during weekdays. Studying on weekends costs extra (费用另计). In comparison, hiring a private tutor (家庭牧师) is much more expensive.
Even though many people see the advantages, some students and experts have pointed out problems. For example, some tablets make mistakes or use outdated questions. Others say the tablets have fancy (花哨的) apps that don’t really offer smarter learning.
Experts also believe that the industry needs better rules and testing. Clear standards are necessary to make sure the technology is good for students. With improvements, AI self-study rooms could play an important role in the future of education.
23. Why do some people think AI self-study rooms are better than regular online courses?
A. They are free.
B. They offer live teacher support.
C. They let students study in groups.
D. They give questions that match students’ abilities.
24. What problem(s) do some students face with Al tablets?
A. They do not give clear study plans.
B. They do not work well in quiet rooms.
C. They make mistakes or use old questions.
D. They are too difficult and expensive to use.
25. According to the last paragraph, which of the following do experts agree with?
A. AI self-study rooms are perfect and need no changes.
B. AI self-study rooms must have clear rules and testing.
C. Tablets in AI self-study rooms never make mistakes.
D. Private tutors are better than Al self-study rooms.
26. In which part of a magazine may you read this passage?
A. Sports. B. Technology. C. Travel. D. Health.

A possible ban (on social media for under-16s in the UK is “on the table”, an English government official named Peter Kyle told the BBC.
Speaking on the Today programme, he said he would “do what it takes” to keep people, especially children, safe online. That also means that children should not be allowed to use social media too much.
He also announced further research into how much influence smartphones and social media have on teenagers. “But there aren’t any clear or scientific results,” he said.
The Molly Rose Foundation welcomed the ban, calling it an “important symbol of protecting teenagers”. “Our research is clear. The society and parents are expecting tech companies to be responsible and take action at once,” it said. However, a lawyer named Iona Silverman described the ban as “a drop in an ocean-sized problem”, saying teenagers might just find new ways to get bad information online. “The government needs to think bigger: this is a problem that requires a new change-making a rule should be ahead of technology,” she said.
Australia’s government said it would prevent children under 16 from using social media. Asked whether the UK would follow Australia, Kyle said “everything is on the table with me”, but he said he wanted to see more evidence (证据) first.
As well as banning social media for young people, some suggest their use of smartphones should also be more strictly controlled. A group called Healthcare Professionals for Safer Screens also wants bans on smartphones. “When I created this group, it was pushing on an open door,” said founder Rebecca Foljambe. “There are so many health professionals who are worried about this.”
The government has stopped short of banning smartphones in schools but has given guidance to make sure that all schools can take some ways to prevent the use of smartphones.
27. Why does Peter Kyle support the possible ban on social media for under-16s?
A. To encourage more outdoor activities.
B. To make sure of children’s online safety.
C. To help children perform well at school.
D. To make children communicate with parents more.
28. How does Iona Silverman like the suggested ban?
A. It is harmful. B. It is necessary. C. It is not enough. D. It is very helpful.
29. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. Creating the group. B. The ban on social media.
C. Pushing on an open door. D. Young people’s smartphone use
30. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The UK is considering banning social media for under-16s.
B. Smartphones arc a main cause of health problems in teenagers.
C. Lawyers are against any form of social media ban for teenagers.
D. Many groups have called for quick action for controlling phone use.

Even though many people see the advantages, some students and experts have pointed out problems. For example, some tablets make mistakes or use outdated questions. Others say the tablets have fancy (花哨的) apps that don’t really offer smarter learning.
