Have you heard of a place that keeps growing? That’s the Yellow River Delta, the youngest land in China.
The delta is shaped by the Yellow River, the second-longest river in China. The river carries a large amount of sediment (沉淀物) to the sea. Over time, the sediment builds up and creates the delta. As the river keeps adding more sediment, the delta gets bigger every year. Now it covers an area of over 5,400 square kilometres—about 7.5 times the size of Singapore! When you look down at it from the sky, the Yellow River Delta is like a large fan spreading towards the sea.
The estuary (河口) of the Yellow River is a key part of the delta. It has a fantastic view. Here, the Yellow River rushes into the Bohai Sea. When they meet, a magical line appears. That’s because the river water doesn’t mix with the seawater. The line divides the water into two parts: on one side is the river’s brown water and on the other side is the seawater as blue as the sky.
The delta includes a big wetland. It’s a paradise for about 400 kinds of birds. Every year, millions of birds migrate (迁徙) here, so it’s called the “International Airport for Birds”. Some birds even make their homes in the delta. For example, the Oriental white storks, often called the “panda of migratory birds”, produce and raise their babies here. The Black-headed gulls which are in danger, also thrive in this special area.
The Yellow River Delta is really a wonder of nature, inviting more people to discover its beauty.

Laughter is a common “language” for humans. It helps us get along with others and build strong relationships. When we were babies, we giggled (咯咯笑) at our parents’ funny faces. As we grow older, we learn to make others laugh too. But here comes an interesting question: Is laughter only a human thing? Scientists have been watching animals closely, and they found some amazing things.
Have you ever seen a dog let you get close to its toy and then quickly run away playfully? Charles Darwin, a famous biology scientist, thought this was like a little joke dogs play. Marc Bekoff, a biology professor watched dogs playfully tease (捉弄) each other. They would walk slowly towards each other and then suddenly run away. He believed that dogs do this for fun and that animals might do it to deal with stress.
In 2024 study, Isabelle Laumer and her team studied four kinds of apes. They saw 18 different ways that apes teased each other. Young apes would quietly walk up behind an adult, give them a light push to surprise them, and then wait to see how the adult would react. This is just like what human children do when they play tricks. So, people may have started to be able to tell jokes and understand funny things a long time ago in human history.
What about laughing? While playing, dogs sometimes make a breathy sound that is like laughter. Dolphins make happy noises when they are play-fighting. Rats make a joyful squeak (吱吱声) similar to a giggle when people tickle them, says Jeffrey Burgdorf, professor at Northwestern University.
But, is a rat’s giggle really a sign that it has a sense of humor? Are the apes just playing around for fun or do they just want to get attention? Why do animals tease and play tricks on each other? “In humans, humour can serve as an ice-breaker, helping us make friends and get closer to others,” says Laumor. “We don’t know if it’s the same in apes or other animals, but it’s possible.”
33. Who believes that animals tease each other to deal with stress?
A. Charles Darwin. B. Marc Bekoff. C. Isabelle Laumer. D. Jeffrey Burgdorf.
34. What do animals and humans have in common according to the passage?
A. They both laugh mainly when they feel stressed.
B. They both make the same sounds when laughing.
C. They always play tricks in exactly the same way.
D. They can both use playful behavior to communicate.
35. What can we infer from the passage about animals’ laughing?
A. It is a sign that they want to get human’s attention.
B. Animals’ laughter plays the same role as humans’ laughter.
C. Animals make laughing sounds just to copy human behavior.
D. Different kinds of animals have their own ways to show “laughter”.
36.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
D
①It used to be common to think of robots as just machines designed to do dirty, boring and dangerous work. In recent years, companies has begun to design robots as toys for children. These have become so popular that experts and parents are worried about the effects of friendships between robots and children.
②In 1940, lsaac Asimov wrote a story called Robbie. In the story, a girl made friends with a robot and her mother was worried about their friendship. At the end of the story, the robot saved the girl’s life and her mother changed her opinions on the robot. In real life, there are also different opinions about humans “hanging out” with robots.
③Experts are worried because children might believe that robots are human beings, not machines. It may seem strange that we can feel a connection with a machine, but just think of the friendly robots in science fiction, from WALL-E to R2-D2. Could close relationships with a robot confuse children?
④Some people think it’s possible. In the past, children would play with lifeless toys. But today’s robots are designed to express feelings in a human way, and some are able to interact (互动) with children. When children say they don’t want to play, the robots will show their disappointment. Also, they are designed to show sadness if they lose in games.
⑤In fact, there’s a real danger that humans forget that robots are not human beings. In an experiment, researchers from different universities in Germany invited 89 people to interact with a robot and then turn it off. However, when they finished the interaction, the robot asked half of the people not to turn it off. These people hesitated (犹豫) before they did so and 13 of them actually refused to turn it off!
⑥Sometimes robots may make good companions for us. But let’s not forget—they aren’t living beings and they don’t have feelings. At least, not yet.
37. Why did the mother change her opinions about Robbie?
A. Because Robbie wrote a story. B. Because Robbie played with her.
C. Because Robbie expressed feelings. D. Because Robbie saved her child.
38. What does the underlined word “confuse” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Make something clear. B. Mistake one thing for another.
C. Make somebody excited. D. Help somebody solve the problem.
39. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The children. B. The robots. C. The companies. D. The researchers.
40. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To tell us not to treat robots as human beings. B. To warn us not to let robots do dangerous work.
C. To ask us to read science fiction about robots. D. To advise us to create friendships with robots.
